Good evening. There are reports to night of the disturbance inside a

north`east prison. An inciddnt thought to be ongoing is sahd to

involve category C or low`ldvel escape risk inmates of block four of

HMP Northumberland. Prison Officers' Association representative Lichael

Rolf says more than 50 inmates have taken over the blocking what is

described as a major incident. The running the prison in Acklington was

recently handed over to Soddxo Justice Services. The company plans

to cut prison officers jobs, prompting concern about safdty at

the sight from local residents. It was a crime that shocked thd nation.

On the morning of March the 28th 1920 Wash 1984, an armed intruder

went into a school in Middldsbrough and attacked the children. One,

Nikki Conroy, was killed. Tonight, 20 years on her classmates gathered

to remember the frost `` to remember the frock friend they lost.

Nikki was 12 when she died. She was an angel, she's an angel now. She

was a gorgeous soul, a pleasure to be around. Her life ended bx an

intruder at school. Lee was her boyfriend back then and he's never

forgotten. Kind, beautiful, friendly, polite. That's how I want

people to remember Nikki, not just the fatal events of that dax.

Tonight friends and family will remember Nikki at a charity event in

Middlesbrough to celebrate, not mourn a girl killed by Stephen

Wilkinson. That day he made his way into Hall Garth School and hnto

class 8MR. The story of what happened next retold by one of the

children. A man just came in and he grabbed me up and put a gun at my

forehead and he said to the teacher, "Get out." And then three ghrls were

stabbed ` Nikki fatally. Tr`gically the events at Hall Garth proved a

portent of worse to come, bdcause two years later an intruder at a

school in Dunblane killed 16 children. Much has changed since. In

modern schools like this ond it is all about security cameras like

these. The gates are kept locked and the doors are kept locked as well.

Yet 20 years ago many schools had multiple entrances. These d`ys it is

very hard to imagine an intruder being able to get very far. A new

school stands of the site of Hall Garth now. The link with Nikki is

unbroken. The school librarx takes her name. 20 years on, the girl who

will always be 12 is not forgotten. The family of Teesside man who has

gone missing in the Lake District have made an emotional appe`l for

him to get in touch. Matthew Jordan, 20, was visiting Bowness whdn he was

last seen leaving the pub. Today, police divers were c`lled in

to search the shoreline arotnd England's largest lake near Bowness.

It is part of a full land, `ir and water operation to try to fhnd a

young man who is a student hn Middlesbrough. Matthew Jord`n's

family and friends have travelled to help and his uncle, sitting

alongside his parents, made this appeal for him to get in totch.

Matthew is a popular, kind xoung man. We are very concerned `nd

worried for him and this is so out of character for him, not bding in

touch with anyone. We want to hear from you, Matthew. Matthew, if you

see or hear this appeal, pldase get in touch with us. We love you and we

just want you home. This is where Matthew Jordan was last seen in the

early hours of yesterday. Hd had come out to get some fresh `ir and

became separated from his friends. Since then there has been no trace

of him. What we're asking is if local people can check housds and

sheds, garages buildings, B`rnes, anyplace somebody could havd taken

shelter. Let us know. Even hf somebody is not there, if there is a

sign of anybody being there, let us know and we can check it out. Search

teams have promised to conthnue the hunt for a young man described as

happy and popular. Matthew was around six foot tall with d`rk brown

hair. Anyone who may have sden him is asked to contact the polhce.

As you might have seen, the Gateshead woman profoundly deaf all

her life has been able to hdar for the first time. Joanne Milnd was

born with a rare condition which causes both deafness and fotr G ,

now blindness. But after behng fitted with cochlear ear implants,

39`year`old Joanne was overwhelmed as she heard a sound for thd first

time. It was the moment Joanne Milne had

dreamed of all her life, behng able to hear. Could you hear those words?

Yes! Yes, I did! Joanne, from Low Fell in Gateshead, was born with the

rare and incurable genetic condition Usher syndrome, causing deafness and

blindness. Joanne could lip read as a child, but now can't as she's

losing her sight and life h`s become much more difficult. That moment of

being able to hear for the first time, it was one of the best of my

life. I can't stop crying. Dven thinking about the experience makes

me cry now. Joanne's hearing was made possible through a cochlear

implant, an electrical device surgically implanted into both ears.

Her mother filmed as it was switched on and as she heard her own voice

for the first time. It's all right! It's a big, big, life changhng day

today. Can you hear your own voice? Yes!
