combat for the first time. That's all from the BBC News. | :00:00. | :00:00.
Welcome to Look North. In the programme tonight. 158 arrests, 93 | :00:00. | :00:09.
charged, 90 found guilty. An exclusive report on the scale of the | :00:10. | :00:13.
violence that scarred a Tyne Wear football derby. An alarming rise in | :00:14. | :00:18.
dog attacks in the region. This six`year`old is one of the latest | :00:19. | :00:23.
victims. She's been missing since 2005. Now film extra Janet Brown's | :00:24. | :00:27.
lover is on trial, accused of her murder. It's been seen by five | :00:28. | :00:33.
million people worldwide ` now the musical Dirty Dancing makes it to | :00:34. | :00:39.
the stage on Tyneside. And in sport, there's only one story that matters | :00:40. | :00:42.
today ` Sunderland's Great Escape. For many people here on Wearside, | :00:43. | :00:45.
last night's win was much, much more than just another football match. | :00:46. | :00:52.
Unbelievable. It is like having a new grandchild. As this football | :00:53. | :01:14.
season draws to a close, shocking scale of the violence that marred | :01:15. | :01:17.
the Tyne`Wear football derby in the Spring of 2013 can now be fully | :01:18. | :01:21.
revealed as the last of the hooligans, aged from 12 to 45, have | :01:22. | :01:24.
finally been brought to justice. We can reveal that the Trouble erupted | :01:25. | :01:28.
outside St James's Park and in the city centre after Sunderland beat | :01:29. | :01:30.
Newcastle three`nil. Hundreds of police fought to contain the mob in | :01:31. | :01:33.
a spontaneous outbreak of drink`fuelled madness that made | :01:34. | :01:36.
national headlines and ruined dozens of young lives. In all, 158 people | :01:37. | :01:39.
were arrested. 93 were charged with violent disorder or affray. 90 of | :01:40. | :01:43.
them were found guilty and three were acquitted. The maximum sentence | :01:44. | :01:48.
imposed ` 21 months. Look North has spoken to the police officers | :01:49. | :01:51.
involved and some of those convicted. Dan Farthing has this | :01:52. | :02:08.
exclusive report. April 2013. More than a thousand police officers were | :02:09. | :02:13.
on duty and the powderkeg atmosphere of a local derby erupted. When the | :02:14. | :02:22.
third goal went in my experience said this will be a difficult day. I | :02:23. | :02:29.
was a bit strong. I was stood outside the stadium. Everybody | :02:30. | :02:34.
started sinking so I thought I go and join in. We had to escort a | :02:35. | :02:41.
sizeable number of fans from the station. The police formed a block. | :02:42. | :02:49.
Unable to get at the Sunderland fans, the crowd turned on the | :02:50. | :02:54.
police. Among the first arrests words Barry Rogerson who were like | :02:55. | :02:57.
most of the mob had been at the game. Some sort of flower descended | :02:58. | :03:14.
on us. I was stupid. He was not typical of the average person | :03:15. | :03:18.
involved. It will be more likely somebody in their late teens or | :03:19. | :03:22.
early 20s who has not been to the match. Half an hour after the final | :03:23. | :03:27.
whistle the violence moved to Westgate Road whether police had | :03:28. | :03:32.
formed a chord in. It was a distraction tactic. They were taken | :03:33. | :03:35.
along with the fury of the crowd while I was able to get an escort | :03:36. | :03:38.
through to the station as quickly as possible without any of the | :03:39. | :03:43.
Sunderland fans being hurts. Examined in close detail, the images | :03:44. | :03:46.
reveal how young some of the troublemakers were. This lad here is | :03:47. | :03:52.
only 12. He has to run out of the way of a missile. He has been | :03:53. | :03:57.
convicted now. He was convicted of a violent disorder. You can see he | :03:58. | :04:01.
goes on to throw bottles at the police. 50 minutes after the match, | :04:02. | :04:07.
the mob moved and again tried to attack the Sunderland escort passing | :04:08. | :04:11.
through the city quadrant and heading to the central station. | :04:12. | :04:17.
Something happened at the station which I have never seen before in | :04:18. | :04:21.
all my years of experience. Newcastle fans started scaling walls | :04:22. | :04:25.
to try get into the station. British transport police colleagues are very | :04:26. | :04:31.
bravely stood their ground. I did think this is going to hurt. I was | :04:32. | :04:35.
tried to dodge the missiles are as much is possible that there was no | :04:36. | :04:40.
way we could move back. I got hurt. But it was just bruising. Had I been | :04:41. | :04:45.
a couple of inches shorter, I dread to think what would have happened. | :04:46. | :04:51.
It would have been my head. Most of them had jobs and were in | :04:52. | :04:55.
education. They have to not away for now. It was the heat of the moment | :04:56. | :05:28.
situation. Stupid really. The legacy is disorder in Newcastle. | :05:29. | :05:31.
12`year`old and new football banning orders. Not a great adverts. And in | :05:32. | :05:48.
tomorrow night's Look North, Dan Farthing reports on how the police | :05:49. | :05:52.
managed to track down so many people involved in the derby day riots. | :05:53. | :05:56.
Look North has discovered a six`year`old girl attacked by two | :05:57. | :05:59.
American Bulldogs this week is just one of a series of recent dog`bite | :06:00. | :06:02.
victims in a Northumberland Town. Ellie Hall, from Ashington, was | :06:03. | :06:05.
taken to hospital after she was bitten while out playing with | :06:06. | :06:08.
friends. We've discovered there's been a spate of serious attacks in | :06:09. | :06:12.
the town ` and even the local MP is calling for action. It comes a week | :06:13. | :06:16.
after a report claimed the rate of hospital admissions from dog bites | :06:17. | :06:18.
was higher in the North East than any other region. Andrew Hartley | :06:19. | :06:26.
reports. Second from death. Six`year`old Ellie Hall from | :06:27. | :06:29.
Ashington were set upon this week by a pair of American Bulldogs. | :06:30. | :06:34.
horrific. She would not be here worried for the neighbour who saved | :06:35. | :06:37.
her. She was just playing with her friends. She did nothing wrong. | :06:38. | :06:43.
She's so lucky. A few more minutes and she would have been gone. I | :06:44. | :06:48.
thought they were nice dogs. But they were bad dogs. They got my leg, | :06:49. | :06:58.
then my arm and then my ear. I was screaming. My friend was frightened. | :06:59. | :07:14.
Both dogs were destroyed. Ellie is not the only person to suffer a dog | :07:15. | :07:17.
bite injury in this town in recent weeks. There have been a series of | :07:18. | :07:22.
incidents. The Holroyd was attacked a few days ago. He had to have | :07:23. | :07:29.
plastic surgery. I was attacked by an English bull terrier. I was | :07:30. | :07:35.
attacked in the face. It does not seem to be `` there are not a lot of | :07:36. | :07:44.
attacks at the moment and owners should be held responsible. They are | :07:45. | :07:48.
victims in a year when a serious bug attacks have become big news. Here | :07:49. | :07:51.
in Ashington it is so bad the town's postman were giving a safety | :07:52. | :07:57.
briefing about violence dogs yesterday. A new study shows that it | :07:58. | :08:00.
is a problem that affects the whole region. The dark areas are where the | :08:01. | :08:06.
rate of attacks are highest. Just look at the North East. Last year | :08:07. | :08:09.
across County Durham and he sighed alone, 269 people were hospitalised | :08:10. | :08:15.
by dogs. A worse rate than anywhere else in the country apart from | :08:16. | :08:20.
Merseyside. The survey's conclusion is that dog attacks are highest in | :08:21. | :08:25.
the most deprived areas. But this Newcastle solicitor deals with | :08:26. | :08:28.
dogged by compensation claims from all over the country. She is not | :08:29. | :08:33.
convinced. the types of incident are the same, whether it is in the North | :08:34. | :08:37.
East or one that happens in the Home Counties. Often, very young children | :08:38. | :08:42.
are attacked by dogs have bad facial injuries and quite frequently... | :08:43. | :08:51.
This sanctuary takes unwanted dogs. When I moved in four years go, we | :08:52. | :08:56.
had 12 dogs will stop we have about 50 now. It is desperate to be | :08:57. | :09:02.
honest. We do taking dogs that have bitten. And we have to try and | :09:03. | :09:09.
correct what caused them to bite in the first place. It is often dogs | :09:10. | :09:12.
have been beaten and used as deterrents, it is not all about | :09:13. | :09:20.
mental abuse. That has got worse over the last two years. Ashington | :09:21. | :09:30.
seems to have a particular problem at the moment. Why? It is not to | :09:31. | :09:34.
pick on Ashington, because across the country more than 6000 people | :09:35. | :09:38.
were hurt by dog attacks last year. That is a 5% rise in one year. It is | :09:39. | :09:43.
clear there is a live issue for Ashington, so much so that the local | :09:44. | :09:48.
MP, Ian Lavery, issued a warning to dog owners to take more | :09:49. | :09:51.
responsibility and people I spoke to on the street are clearly concerned | :09:52. | :09:55.
about the issue and they want action. So what can be done? The new | :09:56. | :10:01.
law which amends the Dangerous Dogs Act out Julie comes into force this | :10:02. | :10:04.
month. It includes increased sentencing but it does not | :10:05. | :10:10.
include... Which has led some people disappointed. I should leave the | :10:11. | :10:15.
final word to brave little Ellie who you saw in my film. She wants to say | :10:16. | :10:20.
a big thank you to the neighbours who her parents believe saved her | :10:21. | :10:32.
life. A man who was killed at a level crossing in North Yorkshire | :10:33. | :10:35.
has been named by police. 77`year`old Eric Ireland, from | :10:36. | :10:37.
Scampston, near Malton, died when his car was struck by a | :10:38. | :10:40.
Trans`Pennine express travelling from Scarborough to Liverpool. The | :10:41. | :10:43.
crossing is on private land at Scampston, where a farm track | :10:44. | :10:49.
crosses the railway line. The Trust which runs hospitals in | :10:50. | :10:51.
Middlesbrough and Northallerton could be declared "unsatisfactory" | :10:52. | :10:54.
by Monitor, the health regulator, if it fails to address multi`million | :10:55. | :10:56.
pound budget problems. The South Tees NHS Trust has to save ?50 | :10:57. | :11:00.
million. It's hired consultants to look for savings, but health unions | :11:01. | :11:08.
have criticised the decision. A court's been told a film extra was | :11:09. | :11:12.
murdered by her lover, who then used hundreds of thousands of pounds of | :11:13. | :11:15.
her money to buy expensive cars. 45`year`old Janet Brown, from Hexham | :11:16. | :11:18.
in Northumberland, vanished in June 2005 after apparently going on | :11:19. | :11:22.
holiday to France. But the jury at Newcastle Crown Court was told she | :11:23. | :11:26.
vanished off the face of the earth and has never been heard of since. | :11:27. | :11:29.
Our news correspondent, Peter Harris, reports. Janet Brown booked | :11:30. | :11:34.
a holiday to France and was never seen again. It said Janet Brown | :11:35. | :11:47.
never reached France because she had been murdered by the man she was due | :11:48. | :11:51.
to go with. The long`term lover Don Graham. It is alleged he then went | :11:52. | :11:55.
on to spend thousands of pounds of her money and in due course that of | :11:56. | :11:58.
her elderly parents. The court heard Janet had savings of ?400,000 and an | :11:59. | :12:01.
inheritance to come from her parents' ?300,000 farm house near | :12:02. | :12:06.
Hexham. It's alleged after killing her, Don Graham spent some of her | :12:07. | :12:10.
money on cars, like this one, as well as a Porsche and Range Rover. | :12:11. | :12:15.
And he bought a house in Seaton Delavel for another lover, who he'd | :12:16. | :12:18.
met just before Janet vanished. The new lover was Elizabeth Todd, is | :12:19. | :12:23.
here on the right. She knew nothing of the alleged murder of Janet, but | :12:24. | :12:27.
in time, it's claimed she committed fraud and forgery to keep Brown's | :12:28. | :12:31.
money flowing in. All the while, Janet's elderly parents, it's said, | :12:32. | :12:34.
were conned into thinking she was alive and living in France. Don | :12:35. | :12:41.
Graham allegedly sent them postcards from France pretending they were | :12:42. | :12:44.
from Janet saying "still enjoying France", that she had a job, had | :12:45. | :12:55.
been promoted and had a company car. The prosecution said that was all a | :12:56. | :12:59.
con. Janet Brown was already dead and Don Graham knew that. Janet, the | :13:00. | :13:03.
jury heard, had loved Don Graham and even had the wedding dress ready to | :13:04. | :13:07.
marry her alleged killer. Don Graham denies charges including murder and | :13:08. | :13:11.
Elizabeth Todd denies forgery and a fraud charge. More than 3,700 people | :13:12. | :13:21.
have signed up to a Facebook group set up to buy a Cumbrian mountain | :13:22. | :13:25.
for the community. Blencathra has been put up for sale by Lord | :13:26. | :13:29.
Lonsdale, who wants to raise just short of ?2 million pounds to pay | :13:30. | :13:33.
off taxes. The group, Friends of Blencathra, says it wants to buy the | :13:34. | :13:38.
mountain, then hold it in trust. The Duchess of Cornwall has been in the | :13:39. | :13:41.
region today. She was visiting RAF Leeming in North Yorkshire in her | :13:42. | :13:58.
capacity as Honorary AirCommodore. She officially opened the new centre | :13:59. | :14:02.
which replaces a facility dating back to the 1940s. It is a purpose | :14:03. | :14:08.
tilt facility we have had. So essentially, we have a very modern | :14:09. | :14:13.
primary health care facility which we can offer good quality medical | :14:14. | :14:17.
care to the service people at RAF meaning from. The smash hit musical | :14:18. | :14:30.
Dirty Dancing has arrived on Tyneside for the first time. Based | :14:31. | :14:33.
on the 1987 film of the same name, the stage show's been seen by five | :14:34. | :14:37.
million people worldwide. The month`long run at Newcastle's | :14:38. | :14:40.
Theatre Royal is on track to be a sell`out. Our entertainment | :14:41. | :14:42.
reporter, Sharuna Sagar, has been to meet the cast. It's the fastest ever | :14:43. | :14:46.
selling West End show and it's now making it's Newcastle debut. Dirty | :14:47. | :14:50.
Dancing is a coming of age romance between Johnny and Baby. It is not | :14:51. | :15:01.
so smooth, there are quite substantial differences between | :15:02. | :15:03.
Johnny and baby. They have very different backgrounds. Nobody puts | :15:04. | :15:11.
baby in a corner! She feels squashed down by things that have happened to | :15:12. | :15:15.
her and he boosts her right back up. It all ends up in a big | :15:16. | :15:20.
triumphant dance number. With a big lift, with a very tough rubber very | :15:21. | :15:26.
big lift! From the Mumba to the melons. The | :15:27. | :15:27.
box`office`record`breaking musical recreates the classic '80s film. For | :15:28. | :15:36.
the big fans out there, they are going to find these iconic moments | :15:37. | :15:41.
live on stage so exciting. The script is close to the movies all | :15:42. | :15:45.
the famous lines are in the show. But there are lots of added extra | :15:46. | :15:51.
exciting parts. It has led to standing ovations and dancing in the | :15:52. | :15:57.
aisles. If the reaction of previous audiences is anything to go by, | :15:58. | :16:01.
theatre`goers who come to this run might well have the time of their | :16:02. | :16:04.
life. Sharuna Sagar, BBC Look North, Theatre Royal Newcastle. Football | :16:05. | :16:12.
now, and there are calls tonight for Sunderland's head coach, Gus Poyet, | :16:13. | :16:15.
to be named Manager of the Year. It's really not hard to see why. The | :16:16. | :16:19.
flamboyant Uruguayan said his team needed a miracle to secure Premier | :16:20. | :16:23.
League survival and after a run of 13 points from the last five games, | :16:24. | :16:25.
that's exactly what they've achieved. Mark Tulip's back at the | :16:26. | :16:29.
Stadium of Light for us now. Does the Great Escape do it justice, | :16:30. | :16:32.
Mark? I think perhaps the "Greatest" Escape Jeff. Before last night, only | :16:33. | :16:36.
West Brom had been bottom of the Premier League at Christmas and | :16:37. | :16:39.
stayed up. Sunderland joined that select club with their 2`0 victory | :16:40. | :16:41.
here ` coincidentally against the West Midlands side. Sunday's final | :16:42. | :16:45.
game at home to Swansea already feels like a 90 minute lap of | :16:46. | :16:51.
honour! There was an air of expectancy before kick`off. Only one | :16:52. | :16:54.
club bottom of the Premier League at Christmas had ever avoided the drop. | :16:55. | :16:58.
That was West Brom ` last night's visitors to the Stadium of Light. | :16:59. | :17:01.
Could Sunderland become the second with just one point required from | :17:02. | :17:09.
their final two matches? He has done such a good job. He has turned us | :17:10. | :17:17.
around. Now look where we are extra macro is why macro are you nervous? | :17:18. | :17:27.
Know we are excited. I would like to see us win. But I will settle for a | :17:28. | :17:32.
point. One of the most publicised football banners this season was | :17:33. | :17:35.
there to remind everyone of Gus Poyet's dream. And his call for the | :17:36. | :17:39.
players to just go for a win seemed to have been heeded early on. With | :17:40. | :17:43.
12 minutes gone, Wearside was in wonderland. Alonso's cross found | :17:44. | :17:45.
Jack Colback, who prodded the ball home to make the Great Escape, look | :17:46. | :17:49.
almost nailed on. Half an hour gone and Larsson, reminding us all that | :17:50. | :17:52.
he's a Swedish international, chipped the ball over the top for | :17:53. | :17:56.
Fabio Borini to score another of his history`making goals. What a shame | :17:57. | :17:59.
he heads back to Liverpool in the summer. Of course, it wouldn't be | :18:00. | :18:02.
Sunderland without a few bitten nails. And in truth, West Brom were | :18:03. | :18:06.
the better side for long periods of the second half. This missed sitter | :18:07. | :18:09.
from Altidore and loose shot from Vergini was as close as the home | :18:10. | :18:13.
side came to putting the game to bed. Had West Brom ` who went into | :18:14. | :18:17.
the game all but safe ` scored, who knows, but they didn't. So cue huge | :18:18. | :18:24.
celebrations: a mixture of joy and relief at the final whistle. | :18:25. | :18:32.
Absolutely amazing. We have done it. I'm pinching myself a little. It is | :18:33. | :18:40.
like having a new grandchild. All credit to everybody in Sunderland | :18:41. | :18:45.
FC. They have brought a lot of cheer. We get to stay in the Premier | :18:46. | :19:05.
League. Fabulous. Is for something unique, it was something special. | :19:06. | :19:09.
The connection on the pitch between the players in the last few games, | :19:10. | :19:13.
the connection with the fans, every single game, is the best five weeks | :19:14. | :19:19.
I have ever had. Today is one of the best days of my life. Gus Poyet says | :19:20. | :19:22.
his team's achievement will be remembered forever in Premier League | :19:23. | :19:30.
folklore. Who would argue with that. Such is the size of the money on | :19:31. | :19:33.
offer this season that the club that finishes at the bottom of the | :19:34. | :19:36.
Premier League will rake in more cash than Manchester United last | :19:37. | :19:39.
season. No wonder relief are keeping the club's high profile can be felt | :19:40. | :19:46.
on and off the pitch. Sunderland have already had just like always | :19:47. | :19:52.
had a good fan base. We must retain that in the Premiership. They do not | :19:53. | :19:56.
just bring in the football fans and a football people are Brenda | :19:57. | :20:03.
Munnings Sunderland, they also bring the big brands into the stadium. | :20:04. | :20:06.
That game brings the profile of the city up and helps with the economy | :20:07. | :20:16.
of the city. Here is Chris Young from the Sunderland Echo. It seems a | :20:17. | :20:20.
bit of a shame that this is likely to be broken up. 13 players are out | :20:21. | :20:25.
of contract or out on loan at the moment. But I still think three or | :20:26. | :20:29.
four of them could stay now that the club are in the Premier League. If | :20:30. | :20:33.
Sunderland had gone down, all of them would properly have departed. | :20:34. | :20:37.
At least that gives them a bit of a foundation for building a side for | :20:38. | :20:42.
the next season. Let us pick out some of those players. Jack Cole | :20:43. | :20:48.
back has been linked with several clubs including Newcastle. It is | :20:49. | :21:00.
unlikely he will be back. He has had a very good season here. I think it | :21:01. | :21:09.
is likely he will go back. Jack on the other hand, Sunderland are still | :21:10. | :21:12.
hoping to tie him down to a new deal. He's in a very strong position | :21:13. | :21:17.
obviously, he has paid by the played a big part in the transformation of | :21:18. | :21:20.
this club. But there are many clubs after him so we'll have to see how | :21:21. | :21:28.
that goes. Giving the manager will get the control he wants? He's in a | :21:29. | :21:36.
very strong position himself. He has seen a remarkable transformation in | :21:37. | :21:52.
the club's fortunes. Thank you. Now the weather. It is unsettled as we | :21:53. | :22:01.
like to say. The weather has been up and down but the bluebells are | :22:02. | :22:04.
thriving at the minutes. Tomorrow, if the bluebells like | :22:05. | :22:14.
showers they will not be disappointed because a very showery | :22:15. | :22:16.
picture tomorrow. Especially into the early part of the afternoon, | :22:17. | :22:20.
becoming drier and brighter later on in the day though. With a fair share | :22:21. | :22:25.
of rain today, there were some decent prize was late on, but the | :22:26. | :22:29.
clouds got their act together and most of the soils and heavy burst of | :22:30. | :22:32.
rain through the afternoon and that pattern continues as we had through | :22:33. | :22:35.
this evening and into the night as well. There will be some drier | :22:36. | :22:39.
interludes and even one or two clear spells, but the showers are never | :22:40. | :22:43.
far away, moving in from the West. Most frequent for Cumbria, that some | :22:44. | :22:48.
further east as well. Overnight, temperatures will be seven or eight | :22:49. | :22:52.
Celsius. It looks like quite a brisk, southerly breeze especially | :22:53. | :22:56.
near those heavier showers. Tomorrow morning, a rash of showery outbreaks | :22:57. | :23:02.
and some prolonged spells of rain in the West. Summer that on the heavy | :23:03. | :23:06.
side, even the odd rumble of thunder. As I said, as we head to | :23:07. | :23:11.
the afternoon towards tea`time and into the early part of the evening, | :23:12. | :23:14.
most places will try and brighten up its search as well. There will be | :23:15. | :23:19.
highs tomorrow afternoon of about 14 Celsius and the wind quite brisk at | :23:20. | :23:23.
times. That is the picture for tomorrow. Into the weekend, low | :23:24. | :23:27.
pressure firmly in charge of things. A band of rain coming in from the | :23:28. | :23:31.
Atlantic on Saturday morning and then it is a showery picture for the | :23:32. | :23:36.
rest of the weekend. By Sunday, that wind coming round from a more | :23:37. | :23:39.
northerly direction so it will feel a wee bit cooler as well. For | :23:40. | :23:44.
Cumbria, some showery outbreaks, certainly for a while tomorrow. More | :23:45. | :23:48.
prolonged rain for a time on Saturday and the showers are never | :23:49. | :23:52.
far away on Sunday. Note is that deep in the temperatures as the wind | :23:53. | :23:56.
turns north`westerly. It is a similar sort of picture from | :23:57. | :24:00.
westerly winds in the Northeast. If you're out and about, be prepared | :24:01. | :24:04.
for some fairly sharp showers over the next few days and you will not | :24:05. | :24:09.
go too far wrong. The first four months of the Look North weather | :24:10. | :24:16.
calendar are already filled. Thank you. That is it for now. We will | :24:17. | :24:24.
leave you with something for Sunderland fans. | :24:25. | :25:52.
No-one would have believed, in the first years of the 21st century, | :25:53. | :25:57.
that Britain's affairs were being watched and scrutinised | :25:58. | :26:01.
With the help of our three political parties, | :26:02. | :26:06.
who lie to the British public about their intentions, | :26:07. | :26:08.
minds immeasurably more bureaucratic than ours | :26:09. | :26:12.
slowly and surely drew their plans against us. | :26:13. | :26:25.
smashing our democracy and destroying our laws... | :26:26. | :26:30. |
