But today, a breakthrough ` the police announced that they'd

arrested a man on suspicion of murder.

He's a 59`year`old York man and tonight he was named as

And then this afternoon, another development as it's confirmed

that the hunt for evidence has been extended to a house in North

Indeed, it's been reported that Michael Snelling was arrested

And that is the home of the man under arrest?

This is where the focus of that police enquiry lies tonight. This

semidetached house in York. Just half a mile from where Claudia

lived. It is believed to be owned by Michael Snelling, the man arrested

this morning. The property has been boarded up throughout the day.

Forensic teams are searching inside and outside the house. North

Yorkshire police have said this is being seen as a significant leak

through. I am concerned about my daughter.

Her name is Claudia. The 19th of March 2009 was the

beginning of history. Claudia Lawrence failed to arrive at her

work as a chef at York University. It is unusual. For a month, the

police make detailed searches of Claudia's home and the surrounding

area. Her family made heartfelt appeals for her return. But five

weeks after her disappearance, police revealed the think she has

been murdered. Any murder investigation has to prove a day. At

the moment, there is no proof of her death, but we have no proof of her

life. I am investigating this disappearance is one of suspected

murder. The case features several times on Crimewatch. There was a

couple seen arguing on the morning she disappeared, was it relevant?

With the trio seemingly cold, North Yorkshire police launch a review of

the case. Research Claudia's house again. It is revealed that DNA has

been found on a cigarette but in Claudia's car. Then use of an

arrest. Phil, the investigation has clearly

gathered pace since the 5th anniversary

of Claudia's disappearance. Yes, the police enquiry has moved on

since the police reopened the case at the end of last year. New

fingerprints have been discovered in Claudia's house, new DNA has been

found. For Claudia's family, this has been an incredibly difficult

five years. They say that this morning's arrest has come as a total

shock for them. They hope that these developments will move closer to

some sort of closure. The police are clearly doing a lot

behind`the`scenes that we do not see going on.

Tonight, police are still very keen to stress that despite this arrest,

Claudia has not been found and that more arrests could follow. But it is

being seen as a significant development in this five`year

investigation. Well,

while detectives were searching that house in York, some of their

this morning. The house here was quickly sealed off. Scenes of crime

officers have been in and out all day. They are just leaving now. They

suggested to neighbours that they will be here for a further two days.

We have spoken to neighbours and this is what they said.

were recovered from the River Tyne after they went missing

on a kayaking trip downriver Brothers Darren Thorpe, who was 41,

and Mark Thorpe, who was 39, Their cousin Gavin Bradley,

who was 36, came from Jarrow. Two of

the bodies were recovered from the river at Riding Mill and the other

was found in the Corbridge area. It looks benign and yet

from this spot, two brothers and their cousin began

when it is raining up the valley and that water passes

agency are amazing. Some of the sites they have,

and there are webcams where you can see the marks on the river

and judge how high the water is. Kayaking is a booming activity,

it costs hundreds of pounds. Anything like this happens,

it gets around very quickly. We try to give as much information

and try to push people towards going to a club, to get as much training

on safety and doublecheck How the three men got themselves

into trouble is now the subject Police say they will hand a file

to the coroner in due course. It's a story that's becoming

depressingly familiar. A 19`year`old student,

out for a Saturday night with friends in a club, sets off home

in the early hours of the morning. Today, as police stepped up

their hunt for Luke Pearce from London, they brought in extra help

from Durham's student population. no trace of Luke Pearce.

The first year engineering student left a city centre night spot with

friends early on Sunday morning, but at some point on this unlit path

back to his college, he disappeared. There have been extensive searches

of this stretch of the River Wear. Today the focus was on land with

Luke's fellow students here to look For any possible clue. He is a

lovely guy. Our fresh set of eyes, you never know. Do you still have

hope? Yes. You have got to. But it has been awhile now. You think the

worst, but have to hope for the best.

medical director, and he told me that the risk register showed they

were properly monitoring problems but there was no quick fix.

The problems are systematic and long`standing. They involve the

structure of the organisation and the way it works. It takes some time

to turn that around. I agree that we need to move at peace, and we are

trying to do that. I hope that when the CQC gives its final verdict,

they will show there has been an improvement. There has been

improvement in terms of mortality, in terms of our acknowledgement of

understanding of our risks. And there is an action plan.

improving. By Friday afternoon, the north`east coast could be looking at
