Blencathra from current owndr Lord Lonsdale are preparing

their final push ahead of this week's deadline for sealed bids

The group, Friends of Blenc`thra, is planning a huge show

of strength on Wednesday morning ` as Mark McAlindon reports.

In just eight weeks, the frhends of Blencathra have come a long way.

Generating huge public support and getting substantial don`tions.

But can they meet Wednesday's deadline?

Yes, we are in a position to make a bid, and we will be doing so.

If on the day, it is not sufficient, we hope that Lord Lonsdale's agent

But on the day of the deadlhne for sealed bids, this Wednesday

campaigners do not intend to let it pass without a big show of strength.

They want to show Lord Lonsdale that they mean business.

A mass walk to the foot of Lancaster.

We have worked so hard for eight weeks.

We are doing it for the people and we want to share that with them

So we are going to walk frol Moot Hall across the old rahlway

It is an inexpensive but enjoyable way to celebrate this speci`l day.

No`one knows if other bids have been received or will be, this wdek.

Friends of Blencathra are jtst hoping that they get the ch`nce

Plans to turn a valley in Northumberland into the first

heartsafe region in Britain have been shown huge support tod`y.

Members of the WI in Rothbury have been holding

a vintage fair in the town to help raise ?10,000 for defibrill`tors

which will be placed in public places the length of Coquet Valley.

This is Vintage Rothbury, organised by the WI.

Raising money to support thd Stephen Carey fund, a charity set up after

We were approached initiallx by the North East Ambulance Servicd to put

a differential of it that a different later in Rothbury. But we

are the WRI and we decided we would decide to fill the whole valley with

them. We will go for ?10,000. If we achieve half of that, we will do

great things and keep on working to make that ?10,000 target re`listic.

Dressing up for the occasion, the whole community showed its support.

Stephen's family were touchdd by today's event.

We find it a great comfort that so many people come together for a

great cause. Defibrillators like this help save lives last wdek. And

they are hoping to say to r`ise enough money to buy more of them. It

will be the first time in the UK that a whole area will be m`de safe.

And by teatime tonight, Rothbury WI confirmed they'd already cotnted
