for the patients of the future. That's all from us. Now on BBC One | :00:00. | :00:11.
Good evening. It's an investigation that has seen detectives spdak to | :00:12. | :00:13.
But eight months after three`year`old Danny Wake was | :00:14. | :00:18.
hit and killed by a van in Darlington, the police s`y they | :00:19. | :00:21.
Today, at the inquest into the toddler's death, the coroner | :00:22. | :00:26.
said the problem was that nobody saw the exact moment he was killed. | :00:27. | :00:30.
That's how Danny's family described him. | :00:31. | :00:39.
They'd all been out to help the toddler, | :00:40. | :00:41.
seen here in the green jackdt, choose his Christmas presents. | :00:42. | :00:44.
Moments later, he was hit by a van and killed. | :00:45. | :00:50.
His family appealed for the driver to come forw`rd. | :00:51. | :00:53.
Words can only describe how we as a family are feeling since the | :00:54. | :00:56.
Instead of looking forward to planning our Christmas as a family, | :00:57. | :01:02.
we are now facing the devastating task of planning Danny's funeral. | :01:03. | :01:08.
Eight months on, and after a major police investigation, an | :01:09. | :01:10.
Danny was walking along here a few yards behind | :01:11. | :01:16.
his family when the police believe he lost sight of his mother for | :01:17. | :01:19.
Now at that exact moment, an eyewitness told | :01:20. | :01:27.
the police that he saw a white van coming along thhs road. | :01:28. | :01:30.
He said he saw something behng lifted into the air | :01:31. | :01:33.
The eyewitness told the polhce that the van then went over the body | :01:34. | :01:40.
But a pathologist said Dannx's injuries did not fit with someone | :01:41. | :01:45.
being thrown into the air and driven over. | :01:46. | :01:47.
Crucially, nobody saw the moment the toddler was hit. | :01:48. | :01:52.
We are confident that we have examined every relevant piece | :01:53. | :01:54.
of evidence in our attempts to trace the driver of the vehhcle | :01:55. | :01:57.
We are and will continue to follow any new | :01:58. | :02:02.
Danny's family continue to `ppeal to anyone with information to | :02:03. | :02:07.
The coroner recorded a verdhct of accidental death. | :02:08. | :02:13.
And despite thousands of hotrs of police investigation, | :02:14. | :02:15.
and more than 300 interviews, it is still not known who w`s | :02:16. | :02:18.
Flash flooding caused chaos across parts of the region this morning. | :02:19. | :02:27.
Heavy rain in parts of Tyneside hit roads and public servicds. | :02:28. | :02:31.
In South Shields a school w`s closed and a hospital had to shut hts | :02:32. | :02:34.
This was the Tyne Dock area in South Shields. | :02:35. | :02:44.
Roads were closed and services on the Tyne and Wear metro were | :02:45. | :02:47.
South and North Tyneside bore the brunt. | :02:48. | :02:51.
And at this hospital, there was chaos for staff in the accident | :02:52. | :02:56.
and emergency department whdn part of their building flooded. | :02:57. | :03:01.
Floodwater came through the main entrances, accident and emergency, | :03:02. | :03:06.
and also, there was leakage into our waiting room through the fl`t roof, | :03:07. | :03:10.
so that meant for a time we couldn't take emergency patients where they | :03:11. | :03:14.
were meant to be taken, and we had to move patients out | :03:15. | :03:17.
Radiology, where we do all of our main x`rays | :03:18. | :03:20.
etc, that was also affected with leakage from the roof and also with | :03:21. | :03:24.
This evening services at thd hospital are back to normal but the | :03:25. | :03:30.
Durham Crown Court was hit by lightning. | :03:31. | :03:35.
All of a sudden there was a mighty bang, I've never hdard | :03:36. | :03:41.
I looked out, and there was smoke coming out. | :03:42. | :03:48.
The lady came to the front door I don't think she knew what had | :03:49. | :03:52.
But she came to the front door and she was in shock, you could tell. | :03:53. | :03:59.
Tonight it seems a repeat of these scenes is unlikely. | :04:00. | :04:02.
Weather forecasters say the risk of further heavy showers is receding. | :04:03. | :04:11.
The new Bishop of Durham has said the Government's | :04:12. | :04:14.
inquiry into sexual abuse whthin the country's institutions hs both | :04:15. | :04:16.
The Right Reverend Paul Butler has become one of the leading voices | :04:17. | :04:21.
on the issue, and says he hopes the victils of | :04:22. | :04:24.
such abuse have the strength to come forward and tell their storhes. | :04:25. | :04:28.
We need to look at instituthonal abuse across`the`board. | :04:29. | :04:32.
So government institutions but also the church, schools and so on. | :04:33. | :04:37.
The issue is why is it that abusers manage to get into instituthons | :04:38. | :04:42.
work with each other, perhaps, across institutions? | :04:43. | :04:45.
And root out that institutional abuse. | :04:46. | :04:52.
A campaign to tackle underage drinking in County Durham h`s | :04:53. | :04:55.
The North East has the highest number of under`ge | :04:56. | :05:00.
drinkers in the UK and the highest number of alcohol`related hospital | :05:01. | :05:02.
Recently, a few cases of underage drinking here h`ve hit | :05:03. | :05:06.
the headlines including a nine year`old girl who was rushed | :05:07. | :05:10.
to hospital after drinking vodka, and a 12 year`old admitted | :05:11. | :05:13.
Police will now be targetting areas of underage drinking | :05:14. | :05:16.
But enforcement is only part of the plan. | :05:17. | :05:20.
Education in schools, education by parents, and for parents, they | :05:21. | :05:25.
Very often there is a need to provide what we c`ll | :05:26. | :05:32.
diversionary activities, that means providing young people | :05:33. | :05:34.
with something else to do other than go out in the parks and drink. | :05:35. | :05:38.
So in different places, all of those things will form part of the | :05:39. | :05:43.
toolkit that's necessary to address this real blight on our sochety | :05:44. | :05:49.
The death of a man who escaped from a police car and was found | :05:50. | :05:52.
at the bottom of cliffs in South Tyneside, will not be dealt | :05:53. | :05:55.
with by the Independent Polhce Complaints Commission. | :05:56. | :05:57.

investigation into what happened will remain with Northumbri` Police. | :06:07. | :06:11.
A community group which failed to buy Blencathra | :06:12. | :06:13.
near Keswick last week may still be able to purchase it after all. | :06:14. | :06:17.
The Friends of Blencathra l`st night applied to Eden District Cotncil to | :06:18. | :06:21.
have the mountain listed as a community asset, and were stccesful. | :06:22. | :06:25.
The successful purchaser of Blencathra, and the agredd | :06:26. | :06:30.
That's it from me this evenhng but let's see now | :06:31. | :06:38.

Good evening, the rain in Rio is matching the mood, I suspect, this | :07:35. | :07:43.
evening. Here, we will take a day off from the rain tomorrow, at least | :07:44. | :07:48.
most of us. There will be sunshine around. The showers will be back for | :07:49. | :07:53.
the end of the week. Dry over night virtually everywhere. Winds easing | :07:54. | :07:58.
