In sport, the region hosts one of the most assiduous tournament in the | :00:39. | :00:53.
tennis calendar, and a test in international relations. Annie | :00:54. | :00:56.

But a former soldier from Northumberland, who was | :01:17. | :01:20.
arrested in India while protecting shipping from pirates, is still no | :01:21. | :01:22.
nearer to coming home, even though a decision had been expected today. | :01:23. | :01:25.
The charges against Nick Dunn and his colleagues were dropped | :01:26. | :01:28.
weeks ago, but the authorithes have still not returned their passports. | :01:29. | :01:30.
And there are now fears thex could be stuck there for months | :01:31. | :01:33.
Ex`paratrooper, Nick Dunn, and five other men, were jahled | :01:34. | :01:37.
for possession of allegedly illegal weapons, last October. | :01:38. | :01:41.
An Indian judge quashed the verdict earlier this month, and the men | :01:42. | :01:43.
should have had their passports returned, but they're still waiting. | :01:44. | :01:53.
slightly frustrated. I just want to come home. It has been thred weeks | :01:54. | :02:03.
since the case was quashed `nd I am still no further forward to when I | :02:04. | :02:10.
will come home. We are still waiting for a decision about when wd can | :02:11. | :02:13.
retrieve our passports and belongings. Your guess is as good as | :02:14. | :02:22.
mine about the decision. Thdy have nothing against us. They ard still | :02:23. | :02:32.
adamant they can keep us here. They can make our lives a misery. | :02:33. | :02:46.
Meanwhile, Nick's family ard still feeling the strain. He said, the | :02:47. | :02:53.
lawyer was in court and as soon as he heard something, he would let me | :02:54. | :02:58.
know. You have been here so many times before now. That is why it is | :02:59. | :03:07.
anybody's guess, it could go anyway. I spoke to Nick earlier, and he is | :03:08. | :03:12.
obviously a very strong guy. How are you coping? As long as he is | :03:13. | :03:24.
mentally strong, that helps me. That helps us carry on. | :03:25. | :03:28.
Damian, we heard there about today's court proceedings in India. | :03:29. | :03:31.
I spoke to Lisa Dunn, Nick's sister, and she said that the court case | :03:32. | :03:44.
today was a waste of time. No decisions have been made and the | :03:45. | :03:48.
passports have not been reldased. The passports are only part of the | :03:49. | :03:54.
problem. Even if they had them, they would not only be able to fly home | :03:55. | :03:59.
on that they would need a ldtter of anti`objection from the terrorist | :04:00. | :04:04.
pleased in India. This department has 90 days to provide this letter | :04:05. | :04:10.
to say, they have no objecthon, or to lodge an appeal. It looks like | :04:11. | :04:14.
they are in no hurry to do dither of these things. They could potentially | :04:15. | :04:20.
be there for a couple of months Thank you. | :04:21. | :04:25.
They said it had to work, and it seems it has! | :04:26. | :04:28.
A year ago, one of our region's biggest success stories, Grdggs | :04:29. | :04:30.
the North East based baker, decided on a plan to help it arrest | :04:31. | :04:33.
And today, the company reve`led that the changes to its products | :04:34. | :04:37.
Profits jumped by 48% to just under ?17 million, in | :04:38. | :04:44.
Andrew Hartley is live for ts now, outside the Greggs factory | :04:45. | :04:50.
Greggs is a 21st century British High Street phenomenon. | :04:51. | :04:59.
And it was born right here in Newcastle. | :05:00. | :05:01.
What happens to Greggs really matters, | :05:02. | :05:04.
not least because it employs 20 000 people and has 1,600 stores. | :05:05. | :05:11.
But a year ago, it sales were falling and profits were down. | :05:12. | :05:16.
So today's figures really are excellent news. | :05:17. | :05:24.
It's the food`on`the`go chahn that ate the High Street. | :05:25. | :05:27.
With more stores in the UK than McDonalds, Greggs, | :05:28. | :05:31.
famous for its pasties and sausage rolls, and a product of the North. | :05:32. | :05:37.
Today, it reported a near 50% increase in profits. | :05:38. | :05:41.
The chain said, sales rose 3% to more than ?370 million in | :05:42. | :05:46.
the first half of the year, helping pre`tax profits reach ?17million. | :05:47. | :05:48.
So how has Greggs turned things around? | :05:49. | :05:59.
Gregg said this year 's figtre six good, because last year 's figures | :06:00. | :06:06.
were bad. Last year it blamdd everything from cold weather to lack | :06:07. | :06:12.
of shoppers. There will be relief for staff. This year's figures are | :06:13. | :06:18.
not so tasty. So how has it turned things around? | :06:19. | :06:19.
It's revamped its stores to help it compete more | :06:20. | :06:21.
It's introduced a new coffed blend and a new range of low calorie, | :06:22. | :06:26.
I think you know what you are going to get. It is not excited, `` | :06:27. | :06:38.
exciting, but it is well prdpared. Better than it used to be. Ht's | :06:39. | :06:45.
convenient, tasty, it feels the empty stomach. I've noticed they are | :06:46. | :06:51.
trying to go a bit more continental with what they are providing, salmon | :06:52. | :06:58.
Jews have moved away from the state and tuna. `` sandwiches. Thdy are | :06:59. | :07:02.
crying to attract a bigger `udience. Greggs has simplified | :07:03. | :07:04.
its business plan, it now knows It's no longer a bakery, | :07:05. | :07:06.
it's a food`on`the`go retailer. So, a range of low fat sandwiches | :07:07. | :07:10.
at Greggs of all places, is this Well, it would make a good headline, | :07:11. | :07:19.
but I don't think so. Now, whilst it?s true Greggs is | :07:20. | :07:27.
already making a million potnds a week from its new range | :07:28. | :07:32.
of low`calorie sandwiches, such as cajun chicken in flatbread, no one | :07:33. | :07:35.
is claiming this as a revolttion. It?s still selling 2.5 millhon | :07:36. | :07:41.
sausage rolls a week, 40 firefighters tackled a blaze | :07:42. | :07:47.
at a disused pub in Gateshe`d, It happened at the former Mdtz pub | :07:48. | :08:01.
on Ravensworth Road, in Dunston A spokesman said crews | :08:02. | :08:05.
"faced difficult conditions" and had to work quickly, | :08:06. | :08:08.
to stop the fire spreading. It's believed the fire started | :08:09. | :08:10.
in the roof. Police and Tyne and Wear Fire | :08:11. | :08:13.
and Rescue Service are investigating Cumbria's been named as among the | :08:14. | :08:15.
worst counties in England for deaths The Institute of Advanced Motorists | :08:16. | :08:24.
has released figures that show 3 more people died, | :08:25. | :08:28.
or suffered serious injuries, Only figures for Lancashire and Kent | :08:29. | :08:30.
were worse. One Carlisle driving instructor | :08:31. | :08:36.
says, He says, | :08:37. | :08:38.
bad drivers are the problem. I am out on the road most d`ys and | :08:39. | :08:52.
what I see is the number of people using mobile phones, eating and | :08:53. | :08:58.
drinking at the wheel, not paying attention and exceeding the speed | :08:59. | :09:04.
limit. It is down to the bad system, that you pass the test, and then | :09:05. | :09:07.
have your license for ever, without having your driving looked `t again. | :09:08. | :09:13.
People need to take responshbility for driving standards and prevent | :09:14. | :09:14.
accidents occurring. Two police firearms officers are | :09:15. | :09:16.
being investigated, after they allegedly killed | :09:17. | :09:18.
an injured deer with a crowbar. The officers from | :09:19. | :09:20.
Durham Constabulary were sent to destroy the deer on a road hn | :09:21. | :09:22.
Tanfield Lea last month, but instead of using their guns, they are | :09:23. | :09:25.
believed to have struck the deer. The force says the pair havd been | :09:26. | :09:28.
moved to other duties, after the deer was "apparently not destroyed | :09:29. | :09:32.
in the approved, humane manner" People in Ashington, | :09:33. | :09:39.
in Northumberland, are being urged to have their say on plans to | :09:40. | :09:41.
invest more than ?70 million pounds The proposals would see part | :09:42. | :09:44.
of the town centre, There'll be a new leisure cdntre | :09:45. | :09:47.
and library, and Ashington will become the new home | :09:48. | :09:52.
for Northumberland County Council. Now, it's taken six years | :09:53. | :09:59.
and it's cost ?20 million. But today, | :10:00. | :10:01.
the delicate process of putting the Great East Window back into York | :10:02. | :10:06.
Minster, finally began, following It is a unique view of the | :10:07. | :10:24.
600`year`old masterpiece. Hhgh up above Yorks, the largest medieval | :10:25. | :10:30.
window in the world. York Mhnster is the pride of the city and for the | :10:31. | :10:36.
last six years, intricate work has been carried out to ensure the | :10:37. | :10:41.
building's beauty is maintahned for future centuries. ?20 million is | :10:42. | :10:46.
being spent restoring York Minster's great window, the stained | :10:47. | :10:51.
glass has been removed, cle`ned repaired and archived. Todax, they | :10:52. | :10:58.
began putting glass back into the window. First a protective glazing, | :10:59. | :11:05.
followed by the stained glass. It is painstaking work with no qudstion of | :11:06. | :11:09.
any being smashed. We are so familiar with working with stained | :11:10. | :11:14.
glass, we understand its importance. It's the last thing we would want to | :11:15. | :11:18.
do. We would hand in a resignation if it got damaged. I am ple`sed to | :11:19. | :11:24.
say it hasn't happened and ht is not an issue. These faces had not been | :11:25. | :11:30.
seen in such detail the 600 years. They belong high up in the Linster, | :11:31. | :11:35.
but the restoration work has allowed us to view the stained glass in all | :11:36. | :11:40.
its glory. Soon these images will be returning to the window. We are 18 | :11:41. | :11:45.
feet are up and this is a vhew that not many people will get to see the | :11:46. | :11:50.
great East window up close will stop this protective glazing will resist | :11:51. | :11:56.
UV light and should protect the stained glass for 200 years. It will | :11:57. | :12:02.
take another two years to install all the glass. Visitors shotld be | :12:03. | :12:07.
getting their glimpse of thd first `` first glimpse of the restored | :12:08. | :12:09.
window next year. Plus, they say two's companx, | :12:10. | :12:10.
three's a crowd. We meet the identical tripldts, | :12:11. | :12:15.
dubbed the little miracles. And the fresher, more unsettled | :12:16. | :12:31.
weather continues we will h`ve more details shortly. | :12:32. | :12:35.
TV cameras were allowed into Scarborough's oldest intellhgence | :12:36. | :12:38.
base for the first time tod`y, as the Prince of Wales paid a visit. | :12:39. | :12:41.
The site, at Irton Moor, is an outstation of the main GCHQ | :12:42. | :12:46.
site in Cheltenham, and played a key role in tr`cking | :12:47. | :12:50.
the famous German battleship, the Bismarck, during World War Two. | :12:51. | :12:57.
During the Second World War, this place is vital in the battld of the | :12:58. | :13:04.
Atlantic, seeking the Bismarck, and for six years, it tracked and | :13:05. | :13:11.
neutralised the dangerous Gdrmany U`boat threat. You have to get an | :13:12. | :13:15.
intellectual thrill from solving puzzles. | :13:16. | :13:19.
They faced months of stress, worry and hospital appointmdnts | :13:20. | :13:21.
Jessica and Liam Posselwhitd, from Guisborough, | :13:22. | :13:23.
were told their identical triplets, born at odds of 4000 to 1, | :13:24. | :13:26.
They were in fact born earlx, at 28 weeks. | :13:27. | :13:32.
But after seven weeks in hospital, the girls are now home and | :13:33. | :13:36.
Their parents call them their three little miracles. | :13:37. | :13:45.
Three happy, healthy little girls, who've already taken over | :13:46. | :13:56.
It feels like they have conpuered so much. We did have faith, but there | :13:57. | :14:16.
were lots of difficulties. Now, we see that didn't matter and we have | :14:17. | :14:19.
delightful kids that are kedping us busy and giving us lots of love | :14:20. | :14:25.
After months of stress, scans and hospital appointments, Jesshca's | :14:26. | :14:29.
But after 28 weeks, when thd time finally came, she hadn't actually | :14:30. | :14:32.
We were quite happily coming home in the car from Skipton, having a | :14:33. | :14:46.
laugh. We just went in for `n appointment, thinking it won't go | :14:47. | :14:51.
long. I was never three days, I went straight to theatre! One minute I | :14:52. | :14:57.
was ever a cheque then I was in pink scrubs. | :14:58. | :14:59.
But with three children, evdrything just takes that little bit longer. | :15:00. | :15:01.
And leaving the house becomds a big job. | :15:02. | :15:03.
Then, when you do finally make it out, you?re stopped. | :15:04. | :15:08.
People have been so lovely, and so amazing and supportive and generous. | :15:09. | :15:12.
Some stop for a chat, some to comment | :15:13. | :15:14.
But Liam and Jessica say, quite a few stop them just | :15:15. | :15:18.
because they're desperate to have a go at pushing the super`pram. | :15:19. | :15:32.
Lovely! I can't understand how they look so fresh. | :15:33. | :15:35.
The annual Stockton International Riverside | :15:36. | :15:36.
The event, which runs until Sunday, is now in its 27th year, | :15:37. | :15:40.
and has grown into a major festival in the cultural calendar. | :15:41. | :15:43.
It also provides something of an economic windfall for Stockton. | :15:44. | :15:45.
Our business correspondent, Ian Reeve, reports. | :15:46. | :15:56.
The opening act from this year's Stockton | :15:57. | :15:58.
Called Safe House, tomorrow's show, will be a large scale aerial | :15:59. | :16:01.
performance on Trinity Green, that promises to explore | :16:02. | :16:03.
For the theatre group behind it it knows a warm welcome awahts | :16:04. | :16:11.
When served comes to town, to Stockton, the whole city coles to | :16:12. | :16:26.
life. We have always been wdlcomed here. We have done many pieces, lots | :16:27. | :16:31.
of installations so people light know us. This is our largest piece | :16:32. | :16:36.
Alongside this performance, will be 100 others over | :16:37. | :16:39.
27 years on, it's an event that s now embraced by the whole town, with | :16:40. | :16:44.
Little wonder perhaps, as they see a marked increase in | :16:45. | :16:48.
In economic terms, it brings in visitors from outside the areas and | :16:49. | :17:01.
helps us to promote the town. Some people have a negative and outdated | :17:02. | :17:07.
impression of the town. It brings around 800,000 to ?1 million of | :17:08. | :17:10.
Some of that cash will be spent here | :17:11. | :17:13.
Tracy's been in business for three years. | :17:14. | :17:15.
But at Festival time, sales boom at her sweet shop. | :17:16. | :17:20.
For my business, it is amazhng. It is tenfold. I am open from 8am to | :17:21. | :17:30.
11:30pm. When I shut the door, there are still people banging on the door | :17:31. | :17:35.
to serve them. There has got to be a time when you shut the door | :17:36. | :17:40.
Performances that can amuse, bemuse, challenge, or baffle. | :17:41. | :17:43.
But always, for more than a quarter of a century, entdrtain. | :17:44. | :17:57.
It was another great night for the region in the Commonwealth Games in | :17:58. | :18:00.
Glasgow, despite what Usain Bolt may or may not have said about it! | :18:01. | :18:03.
We'll get to Alnwick's Laura Weightman and her | :18:04. | :18:07.
stunning silver in the 1500l shortly, but first Nisha Joshi | :18:08. | :18:09.
Rising star Nick Miller bec`me a Commonwealth medal winner for the | :18:10. | :18:26.
first time last night. He got silver, throwing the hammer nearly | :18:27. | :18:31.
70 metres. This is the biggdst milestone of the 21's career so far. | :18:32. | :18:42.
I am very happy with it. I `m not a person who get nervous. I w`lked in | :18:43. | :18:47.
the rain, and it eggs you one. `` in the ring. Jess Taylor, from York, | :18:48. | :18:56.
will hopefully still be smiling tonight, when her fate will be | :18:57. | :19:03.
decided in the final two rotnds She had a string of personal bests in | :19:04. | :19:06.
the competition so far, including in the hundred metre hurdles l`st | :19:07. | :19:11.
night. Also going for glory, is Chris Tomlinson from Middlesbrough, | :19:12. | :19:15.
up against Greg Rutherford hn the final. Earlier today, Jack produced | :19:16. | :19:24.
a diving masterclass in qualifying. He made it through to the one metre | :19:25. | :19:29.
springboard final in first place, well ahead of his rivals. Hd is one | :19:30. | :19:33.
of the favourite to pick up a medal. Boxing, survivor Marshall is still | :19:34. | :19:43.
on court `` savanna Marshall is still on course. She is still on | :19:44. | :19:49.
course. She's Sunderland put Makro Warren could not hide his | :19:50. | :19:53.
disappointment after losing an points this afternoon. The | :19:54. | :19:59.
Canadian's late surge sealed a split decision victory. | :20:00. | :20:02.
Well in the 1500m Laura Weightman from Alnwick had us all | :20:03. | :20:04.
on the edge of our seats as she ran a superb tactical race to | :20:05. | :20:08.
Near the back of the field darly on she pushed forward to briefly take | :20:09. | :20:16.
the lead at the bell and with Kenyan Faith Kibiegon holding on for gold | :20:17. | :20:19.
Laura stormed through to hold off stiff competition from Canada's Kate | :20:20. | :20:24.
van Buskirk to cross the line in second place. | :20:25. | :20:27.
I spoke to her a little earlier and asked if her incredible | :20:28. | :20:30.
I don't really think it has sunk in. I still can't believe waking up as | :20:31. | :20:47.
they saw the Commonwealth mddallist. It is your dream. Tonight, when I | :20:48. | :20:53.
get the medal putter around my neck, I will believe I have set out | :20:54. | :20:58.
what I'd wanted to achieve `` put around my neck. I felt I had a | :20:59. | :21:05.
little bit left in that timd, it was pure determination to fight to the | :21:06. | :21:10.
line and get that medal, it got me there. It was hardly your mtm to | :21:11. | :21:15.
hide her emotions. You went over to her. I heard shouting and s`w her | :21:16. | :21:23.
waving. Justice he has stood there, she was in tears and it was very | :21:24. | :21:32.
emotional. `` just to see hdr. It was very emotional. I haven't had | :21:33. | :21:36.
much time to celebrate, it was a bath and a couple of slices of | :21:37. | :21:41.
pizza. I have two say the celebrations because they h`ve | :21:42. | :21:45.
another champion ship coming up in two weeks time. So is it sthll full | :21:46. | :21:52.
steam ahead? Yes, a bit of rest and recovery, enjoy getting my ledal, | :21:53. | :21:58.
and then relaxing and settlhng my emotions. It is such a whirlwind, | :21:59. | :22:02.
when you win, especially as it is my first one. Well, Congo Child she is. | :22:03. | :22:09.
You made it an exciting night for us all year. `` welcome graduations `` | :22:10. | :22:14.
con graduations. Now, while top class athlethcs is | :22:15. | :22:23.
continuing in Glasgow, we've got some top class tennis | :22:24. | :22:25.
in the North East. For the first time, | :22:26. | :22:27.
the Northumberland Club in the Newcastle suburb of Jesmond, | :22:28. | :22:29.
is hosting the prestigious Helvetie Cup, the European qualifying | :22:30. | :22:32.
competition for the Junior Fed Cup. And while the focus is | :22:33. | :22:34.
on the tennis, with Israel, Ukraine and the Netherlands | :22:35. | :22:36.
among the eight nations takhng For the 15 and 16`year`old girls | :22:37. | :22:39.
playing here, it's a chance to experience some of the | :22:40. | :22:42.
pomp and ceremony that goes along The flags of the eight compdting | :22:43. | :22:46.
nations paraded on court, the spectators politely standing | :22:47. | :22:51.
for each of the national anthems. It's a huge honour | :22:52. | :22:53.
for the Northumberland club to be hosting the event and important | :22:54. | :22:56.
for the girls? developement. There are different people `round | :22:57. | :23:08.
the country who bid to host this. They decided to send it to | :23:09. | :23:12.
Northumberland. We have a bdautiful facility here. It is almost | :23:13. | :23:20.
impossible to develop yoursdlf with out our students. It is verx | :23:21. | :23:24.
important for them to compete against each other, in circtmstances | :23:25. | :23:28.
that they are not comfortable with, and find their way to meet their | :23:29. | :23:29.
best attentional. In an ideal world, | :23:30. | :23:33.
sport and politics would never mix. In reality, | :23:34. | :23:36.
they're inextricably linked. The hostilities in the Middle East, | :23:37. | :23:37.
meant a constant but discredt, security presence | :23:38. | :23:40.
around the Israeli team. And although squads from Brhtain, | :23:41. | :23:41.
Ukraine and the Netherlands stood side by side on the same cotrt, | :23:42. | :23:43.
the impact of the Malaysia @irlines Every minute of the news is about | :23:44. | :23:57.
Israel and the flight. It is also strange for me and for the girls. | :23:58. | :24:03.
They are 15 and 16, but thex are involved. It was a very emotional | :24:04. | :24:08.
last two weeks in the Netherlands. I am happy for the countries that they | :24:09. | :24:13.
can forget and play tennis `nd enjoy it. It is tough. We are talking | :24:14. | :24:17.
about two countries out of dight, involved in a war. It does put | :24:18. | :24:23.
pressure on them, but we trx to make it as friendly as possible. It was | :24:24. | :24:28.
good to see, last night, thd girls were mixing and talk to each other. | :24:29. | :24:32.
There was no animosity betwden any nations. | :24:33. | :24:33.
The winners and runners up go on to Budapest next week, | :24:34. | :24:36.
for the European finals, thd success of day one means the club h`s | :24:37. | :24:39.
already been asked if they'd host the competition next year. | :24:40. | :24:44.
Now, I am sure there would have been a few crosswinds. It was a bit | :24:45. | :24:47.
breezy. Yes, there is a fresher feel to | :24:48. | :25:04.
things. Some evening sun sign shops. Thank you for these pictures. | :25:05. | :25:13.
They're worse than gaps in the clouds and if you bright spdlls `` | :25:14. | :25:22.
there were a few gaps. Therd will be one or two showers around for a | :25:23. | :25:27.
time. The showers do not cldar away completely, and there is an odd one | :25:28. | :25:32.
through the night. Temperattres stay in double figures, lows of 02 | :25:33. | :25:40.
degrees. Tomorrow, it will be a shower rebate, and a fair alount of | :25:41. | :25:47.
cloud. `` shall read day. There will be some brighter colours. There | :25:48. | :25:55.
could even be able of thunddr. Having said that, there will be gaps | :25:56. | :26:01.
and some sunny intervals stop temperatures still 20 Celsits, 0 | :26:02. | :26:09.
Fahrenheit. The winds are lhght this southwestern is could become | :26:10. | :26:14.
gusty at times. Heading to the next two days, low pressure dominates ad | :26:15. | :26:23.
it is unsettled. There will be a lot of cloud and banks of rain. Into the | :26:24. | :26:28.
weekend, it moves northwards and things pick`up. If you are out and | :26:29. | :26:35.
about, some outbreaks of rahn, but bright spells, too. More widespread | :26:36. | :26:41.
rain on Friday, but temperatures still in the 20s. Into the weekend, | :26:42. | :26:49.
heavy showers are likely, whth a few bright intervals in between. Showers | :26:50. | :26:55.
become less widespread, and we see some longer sunny spells ag`in. Keep | :26:56. | :26:58.
those July weather pictures coming. Hurrah, longer sunny spells. We need | :26:59. | :27:12.
them for the summer holidays. Join us at 10:25pm. Good night. | :27:13. | :27:27. |
