Hello, good evening. The le`der of Newcastle Council says the North

East must get new powers soon to compete with a beefed`up Scottish

Parliament. Labour's Nick Forbes says change south of the border must

take place at the same time as those earmarked for Scotland, and cannot

be kicked into the long grass. He wants more power for the city and

for the recently`formed combined authority of seven north east

councils. Here's our Political Editor Richard Moss.

The main political parties were clear.

A no vote in Scotland didn't mean no change.

And all three leaders say they will honour

a campaign commitment to enhance the powers of the Scottish Parlhament.

But Newcastle's leader says they must ` at the same time `

a Constitutional Convention before proposing any major changes

south of the border. The combined authority, it could be

the correct thing. Conservatives in the region though

say action is needed now to ensure If they get power, and we don't

then we would have to focus on unwanted investment.

The dust may be settling on the referendum then,

but the debate on extra powdrs south of the border is just beginning

says more needs to be done to help bridge the economic gap between

cities in the north of Engl`nd and London. Research commissiondd by the

Centre for Cities suggested that almost three quarters of people in

Newcastle believe too many political decisions are focused on London
