A man injured after two of his dogs turn on him. They were just chucking | :00:08. | :00:24.
him around like a rag doll. Frankly, a smaller person, a smaller build | :00:25. | :00:26.
person would not have survived. The illegal operators who dtmped | :00:27. | :00:31.
tonnes of rubbish in a field The market town that kept | :00:32. | :00:35.
its title after Scotland rejected And the Olympic medallist | :00:36. | :00:39.
who retired at the weekend. As one manager keeps his job we talk | :00:40. | :00:42.
to another who's taken over And Gareth Breeses to victory to | :00:43. | :00:49.
go out on a high with cup whnners, A man has been left with serious arm | :00:50. | :00:57.
injuries after being mauled It happened last night | :00:58. | :01:09.
in the village of High Pitthngton. Both dogs are believed to | :01:10. | :01:16.
be American Bulldogs. One has been destroyed, while the | :01:17. | :01:18.
other is in police kennels tntil Priors Grange, a quiet residential | :01:19. | :01:20.
estate in High Pittington. But last night neighbours wdre | :01:21. | :01:28.
disturbed by horrifying scrdams A 47`year`old neighbour being mauled | :01:29. | :01:30.
in the street by his own dogs. His arm is said to | :01:31. | :01:36.
have been savaged. He was being attacked by his dogs. | :01:37. | :01:50.
They kept the attack going for quite a while. They ripped his close. They | :01:51. | :01:56.
were chucking him around like a rag doll. Frankly, a smaller person or a | :01:57. | :02:05.
child would not have survivdd. I am very shaken. I cannot concentrate. I | :02:06. | :02:10.
have got a Nexus size class and I got there and I thought, I cannot | :02:11. | :02:16.
switch the iron. `` an exercise class. It was horrible to w`tch | :02:17. | :02:22.
Lots of courageous people wdre outside. With umbrellas and golf | :02:23. | :02:29.
clubs. They tried to get thd dogs off. People brought their c`rs out | :02:30. | :02:33.
and tried to run them over with cars to get them off the poor man | :02:34. | :02:35.
concerned. But to no avail. Police managed to contain one | :02:36. | :02:40.
of the dogs at the scene. Aside from marks on the pavdment, | :02:41. | :02:42.
little sign today of the horror The second dog was trade shortly | :02:43. | :02:53.
afterwards to this area, half a mile from where the attack took place. | :02:54. | :02:58.
Officers said it was put down humanely at around 11 o'clock last | :02:59. | :03:02.
night. Praise from the local community. We are very thankful that | :03:03. | :03:07.
people came out and helped ` man that was injured on the grotnd. | :03:08. | :03:10.
Without their involvement it could have been a very different story. | :03:11. | :03:16.
Credit to those people. I hope they understand the depth of feeling from | :03:17. | :03:21.
ourselves and the family. So horrendous an attack that police | :03:22. | :03:24.
have offered counselling for people that saw what happened. The man | :03:25. | :03:28.
remains with serious injurids in hospital. | :03:29. | :03:37.
A major search has been launched after a couple waded | :03:38. | :03:40.
into the sea off the coast at Sunderland to rescue thehr dog. | :03:41. | :03:43.
The woman has been recovered but the coastguard and police are | :03:44. | :03:46.
We'll have an update in our late news at 10.25. | :03:47. | :03:53.
The number of illegal tips being closed down in the North East has | :03:54. | :03:57.
But people living close to these unlicensed waste disposal operators | :03:58. | :04:00.
say the authorities are far too slow to act, and leave them living | :04:01. | :04:04.
Inside Out's Chris Jackson has this exclusive report: | :04:05. | :04:09.
Tonnes of plaster being dumped. They are treading the waste into the | :04:10. | :04:15.
ground. One of dozens of waxs in which these operators illeg`lly | :04:16. | :04:19.
tipped rubbish and they are paid many thousands of pounds to dispose | :04:20. | :04:26.
of it. This company operated from three other sites in County Durham. | :04:27. | :04:31.
They have a massive illegal dump on this industrial estate. Thotsands of | :04:32. | :04:36.
tonnes of rotting, stinking waste. It was the height of the buhlding. | :04:37. | :04:42.
As far out as this fence. The smell, the flies and rats, it was `wful. | :04:43. | :04:47.
Tens of thousands of tonnes of waste brought to various sites on the | :04:48. | :04:52.
pretence of King recycled. But what we saw was it was just stockpiled. | :04:53. | :04:58.
Not processed. And left to rot. These people are greedy. Do not beat | :04:59. | :05:03.
around the bush. That is whx people commit crime. Waste disposal is | :05:04. | :05:10.
lucrative. The law caught up with the company and the man behhnd the | :05:11. | :05:13.
firm was given an 18 month prison sentence. The residence that insured | :05:14. | :05:19.
living next to the legal tips said it took far too long to bring him to | :05:20. | :05:25.
book. `` put up with. It went on too long. It beggars belief. How were | :05:26. | :05:30.
they allowed to continue? I am still bitter. We work as quickly `s we | :05:31. | :05:36.
possibly can to mediate these problems. But sometimes these things | :05:37. | :05:42.
cannot be rectified overnight. The environment agency said in the last | :05:43. | :05:45.
two years the number of leg`l tips closed down has doubled. `` illegal | :05:46. | :05:54.
tips. More about that tonight at half past seven on BBC One. | :05:55. | :05:59.
It was to be a temporary protest to make a point. | :06:00. | :06:03.
But now relatives of an 83`year`old man who are staging | :06:04. | :06:05.
a sit`in protest at a Countx Durham care home say they're staying put. | :06:06. | :06:08.
Indeed, they won't leave until the council | :06:09. | :06:10.
Don Robson was supposed to leave Newtown House in Stanhope | :06:11. | :06:14.
A former headteacher, his f`mily said he has finally become ` rebel | :06:15. | :06:31.
at the age of 83. He and his daughter`in`law are the onlx people | :06:32. | :06:35.
left in this house. He said he did not want to be a troublemakdr but he | :06:36. | :06:39.
just does not want to leave the home he loves. I do not particul`rly like | :06:40. | :06:47.
it at all. I do not think there will be anywhere that is as good. In fact | :06:48. | :06:51.
I know there will not be anxwhere as good. I am positive of that. | :06:52. | :07:25.
spending clashes, we have got to reduce the budget. We have to move | :07:26. | :07:28.
to a new model of doing things. We cannot afford it any more. Lichelle | :07:29. | :07:34.
had plans to end the peaceftl process on Wednesday after his 4th | :07:35. | :07:36.
Officially, they will issue what is birthday. Now they said thex | :07:37. | :09:07.
Officially, they will issue what is a constitutional convention. Some | :09:08. | :09:10.
delegates, including the le`der of Newcastle Council wants to know what | :09:11. | :09:15.
that will mean and they want some powers for the north`east rdceipt | :09:16. | :09:22.
sharply. Newcastle is one of the eight big core cities outside | :09:23. | :09:27.
London. We have set out ways in which we could devolve | :09:28. | :09:29.
responsibility is straightaway. What I would like is to work on the same | :09:30. | :09:35.
timetable and Scotland. Bec`use frankly it is too important an issue | :09:36. | :09:41.
to kick it into the long gr`ss. But not all Labour politicians wants to | :09:42. | :09:45.
move as quickly. I think thdy will all want extra powers for the North. | :09:46. | :09:49.
They will look at all of thd constitutional reform including | :09:50. | :09:54.
Newcastle North MP. Rushing into it like a knee jerk reaction to the | :09:55. | :09:57.
Referendum in Scotland I thhnk would be a mistake. We must make sure that | :09:58. | :10:02.
whatever is decided that is right for areas like the north`east | :10:03. | :10:06.
actually comes from the people of the north`east. That it is not a | :10:07. | :10:11.
mandate from Westminster as to how Westminster believes it shotld be | :10:12. | :10:14.
done. Some disagreements about welfare? Yes, there. Ed Balls said | :10:15. | :10:21.
that Labour would only incrdase child benefit by 1% until 2017. One | :10:22. | :10:28.
year longer than the coalithon. That is not popular with some MPs, | :10:29. | :10:35.
including the MP for walls back `` once back. This is one of the | :10:36. | :10:40.
richest economies in the world. `` this MP. Three out of five people, | :10:41. | :10:50.
children are living in poverty. That have not got a square meal to go to | :10:51. | :10:56.
school with. And Ed Miliband has his big speech tomorrow. Yes, it is all | :10:57. | :11:04.
this constitutional stuff. He will try and inspire his supportdrs and | :11:05. | :11:08.
headed towards that general election, which of course is next | :11:09. | :11:10.
May. Thank you. Well, besides the leaders | :11:11. | :11:14.
of the main political partids, there was another group of people | :11:15. | :11:16.
who were mightily relieved by They're traders in the Tyne valley | :11:17. | :11:19.
town of Haltwhistle, which larkets It's a claim they couldn't have made | :11:20. | :11:23.
if Scotland had become Peter Harris reports | :11:24. | :11:27.
from Haltwhistle: It's an area with a history | :11:28. | :11:32.
of conflict. A town once burned down | :11:33. | :11:35.
by the notorious gangs of the border reevers has strvived | :11:36. | :11:43.
another threat from the Scots. Had they gone independent, | :11:44. | :11:45.
Haltwhistle would lose its claim to It would have meant the shop front, | :11:46. | :12:00.
the balm, the station, that would have... We would have two h`ve | :12:01. | :12:07.
changed. The battle for the centre ground has caught international | :12:08. | :12:12.
attention. They were prepardd for desperate measures. What wotld you | :12:13. | :12:17.
have done if they went independent? This is the centre. The war would | :12:18. | :12:21.
have been built back up. Thd machine gun would have been on top. The | :12:22. | :12:26.
claim to be the centre does involve a bit of spin, but at the hotel | :12:27. | :12:32.
this hotel owner is convincdd. Equities to and from the centre of | :12:33. | :12:36.
Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland from the centre of Britain. `` equal | :12:37. | :12:43.
distance. It would have reconfigured the UK and moved the centre south. | :12:44. | :12:48.
This town is defined. It saxs it is the true centre. `` defiant. We | :12:49. | :12:55.
recognise the centre of the country. All of the other places fadd out | :12:56. | :13:02.
into oblivion. Even with thd UK intact, the title of the centre of | :13:03. | :13:05.
Great Britain will remain contentious, it depends how it is | :13:06. | :13:10.
calculated but at least it hs an important way of bringing in tourism | :13:11. | :13:14.
for a town like this. It is the best thing that has happened in this | :13:15. | :13:20.
town. It is good to have th`t label. With the Scots staying put they can | :13:21. | :13:25.
lay claim to being the centre ground for another generation at ldast | :13:26. | :13:33.
On to sport, but not football obviously, because we're gohng | :13:34. | :13:36.
What a year it's been for the region's county cricket | :13:37. | :13:40.
teams, with the championship title going to Yorkshire, and now | :13:41. | :13:43.
It's been a terrific summer, hasn't it? | :13:44. | :13:47.
And what a way for Jamaican all`rounder Gareth Breese to end | :13:48. | :13:50.
his Durham career, by scoring the winning runs at Lord's. | :13:51. | :13:53.
It was the perfect end to a nail`biting day's play. | :13:54. | :14:01.
They have been here before but it is still only their second Lord's cup | :14:02. | :14:10.
final in their short historx. No floodlights in 2007. No way play | :14:11. | :14:13.
would have started without them this time. It was a bad toss to lose as | :14:14. | :14:18.
Warwickshire quickly found out. Wickets fell on a regular b`sis and | :14:19. | :14:22.
runs were hard to come by. The Durham effort was shared. C`lum | :14:23. | :14:27.
MacLeod taking a magnificent catch. Gareth Breese was never far from the | :14:28. | :14:32.
action. A couple of catches and three wickets. He had already been | :14:33. | :14:36.
told his contract would not be renewed at the end of the sdason. | :14:37. | :14:40.
The end of the Warwickshire innings and just 165 on the board. Surely a | :14:41. | :14:45.
cue for a comfortable victory? But they lost Phil Mustard in the | :14:46. | :14:49.
opening over, who lifted thd first one`day trophy. Under the grey skies | :14:50. | :14:54.
it became a battle of nerves. Ben Stokes smashed a record rathng | :14:55. | :14:57.
century to get through the semifinal. But this called for a | :14:58. | :15:02.
cool head. If luck was on their side occasionally, they certainlx earned | :15:03. | :15:07.
it. Gareth Breese came to the crease with Durham in a dangerous | :15:08. | :15:10.
position. They inched towards the target, before the all`rounder put | :15:11. | :15:15.
it in just the right place for the winning boundary. They said the | :15:16. | :15:20.
script was written for him to be there as the end and that is how it | :15:21. | :15:24.
pans out. It was a bit tensd but they got the 21 is required and the | :15:25. | :15:30.
nerves settled a little bit. `` 20 runs. I am thrilled for him to | :15:31. | :15:35.
finish his career like he dhd today. I do not know what is coming next | :15:36. | :15:39.
for me. I would like to hopdfully be involved in cricket and we will see | :15:40. | :15:43.
what happens. If it is farewell what a way to finish. If it is, it | :15:44. | :15:51.
cannot get any better. And H gather a good night was had by all. The | :15:52. | :15:55.
Jamaican rum would be prettx potent. On to football and a team whth | :15:56. | :15:59.
a new manager, not talking `bout Newcastle United, of course, because | :16:00. | :16:02.
their old one's still there. No, we're talking about new Carlisle | :16:03. | :16:05.
boss, Keith Curle, who met the media today, having seen his side set a | :16:06. | :16:09.
new club record of 15 leagud games without a win, but the Cumbrians did | :16:10. | :16:13.
at least put up a fight, after going three down to Mansfield | :16:14. | :16:16.
before half`time. Curle took over on Friday whth | :16:17. | :16:18.
assistant Colin West, the ex`Sunderland striker who w`s number | :16:19. | :16:20.
two to Chris Turner at Hartlepool. They had planned to take a back seat | :16:21. | :16:25.
for this one, but Curle had his say They pulled two back, | :16:26. | :16:29.
couldn't find an equaliser, though But the boss is hoping | :16:30. | :16:33.
to turn things around. My job now is I need to cre`te away, | :16:34. | :16:47.
how everybody in the club, the community, can get on board. We want | :16:48. | :16:51.
attractive and attacking football. We need to know what we can call | :16:52. | :16:57.
upon. You can ask anybody to do something I do not think thdy can | :16:58. | :17:03.
do. We need to get points. H need to turn a squad into 18. And good luck | :17:04. | :17:05.
to him and I think he might need it. Well, Sunderland are three places | :17:06. | :17:10.
but just one point better off than Newcastle and it w`s | :17:11. | :17:13.
a pretty uninspiring perforlance Alan Pardew would be relievdd that | :17:14. | :17:27.
the protest did not happen. Some banners were confiscated but it was | :17:28. | :17:37.
mainly directed at Mike Ashley. Steve Rees, the man that might | :17:38. | :17:42.
replace him. We never know. They were a couple of cracking goals My | :17:43. | :17:48.
sons would call them worldlx. And what about that one. You cannot do | :17:49. | :17:54.
much about that. Alan Pardew thinking it will not be his day | :17:55. | :17:59.
Papiss Cisse should not havd been playing according to medical advice | :18:00. | :18:02.
and he scored twice. His first since March and he direct did `` dedicated | :18:03. | :18:09.
it to a player that is having cancer treatment. And the sunshine came | :18:10. | :18:15.
out. One point for them but some fans, they are still not too | :18:16. | :18:22.
pleased. The one`time we thought we would get beat, it would be today to | :18:23. | :18:27.
get him out. They more or ldss took a neutral position. I think they | :18:28. | :18:32.
just took a view of loving their club and just see what happdns. I | :18:33. | :18:36.
think we did enough on the pitch to win some friends. I do not think he | :18:37. | :18:41.
is up to the job. I do not blame him for the players. That is down to | :18:42. | :18:46.
Mike Ashley. But he has not done his best with what he has got. H do not | :18:47. | :18:51.
think it is good, to be hondst. We are not doing well. I would keep him | :18:52. | :18:56.
on. Give him a chance. Not good enough. No. Papiss Cisse, brilliant, | :18:57. | :19:03.
but more must be done. He whll not have a press conference ahe`d of the | :19:04. | :19:08.
cup game against Crystal Palace Staying out of the limelight. | :19:09. | :19:12.
Well, Sunderland are three places but just one point better | :19:13. | :19:14.
off than Newcastle and it w`s a pretty uninspiring perforlance | :19:15. | :19:17.
Yes, and Gus Poyet must havd targeted this one | :19:18. | :19:20.
against the Premier League new boys but they're still looking for their | :19:21. | :19:23.
first three points of the sdason in what was a pretty scrappx game. | :19:24. | :19:26.
Jack Rodwell at least getting a shot on target | :19:27. | :19:29.
and on the plus side The Bl`ck Cats did keep their first clean sheet. | :19:30. | :19:41.
At least another draw. But they are not winning many. Crystal P`lace, | :19:42. | :19:46.
Leicester, West Bromwich, I think they will have to be worried they | :19:47. | :19:48.
have not got that first win. So, Sunderland and Newcastld, along | :19:49. | :19:53.
with Burnley, the only teams without Call me a pessimist but it's already | :19:54. | :19:56.
looking like a long season `head! However, | :19:57. | :20:01.
it's looking considerably brighter on Teesside, where Middlesbrough are | :20:02. | :20:08.
up to fifth in the Championship Yes, whisper it quietly, Boro are | :20:09. | :20:10.
just three points off the top of Could this be the season thdy | :20:11. | :20:13.
finally get out of the Championship? Yet another goal from captahn | :20:14. | :20:18.
Grant Leadbitter, who's alrdady equalled his tally from last season, | :20:19. | :20:20.
six in his last seven games. Aitor Karanka's summer signhngs seem | :20:21. | :20:24.
to have gelled well, a great move from Jelle Vossen and | :20:25. | :20:26.
Emilio Nsue saw Albert Adom`h score This header made it | :20:27. | :20:30.
a memorable first start for young striker Patrick B`mford | :20:31. | :20:37.
on loan from Chelsea. Even the loss of Dean Whitehead sent | :20:38. | :20:41.
off for this tackle didn't deter Boro as substitute Kite camd | :20:42. | :20:44.
on to make it four and that's Boro's But in League Two it's all looking | :20:45. | :20:47.
a bit desperate. Hartlepool are only one place better | :20:48. | :20:55.
off than bottom club Carlisle Fans understandably unhappy | :20:56. | :20:57.
but a lack of money for new players is a big problem | :20:58. | :21:03.
for Pools, Colin Cooper has a huge And York City aren't much bdtter | :21:04. | :21:07.

Russel Penn and Dave Winfield but were always behind against | :21:15. | :21:22.
Phil Brown's Southend. On to rugby now | :21:23. | :21:30.
and a disappointing weekend for our Newcastle Falcons were | :21:31. | :21:33.
comprehensively beaten The Premiership champions scored | :21:34. | :21:35.
three tries in the first 20 minutes and although the Falcons put in a | :21:36. | :21:43.
much better second half performance with Noah Cato touching down for | :21:44. | :21:46.
Newcastle's only try, it's their 19th league defeat in a row, | :21:47. | :21:49.
and it looks like being another And in rugby league's Champhonship 1 | :21:50. | :21:52.
Gateshead Thunder's promotion hopes came to an end after losing | :21:53. | :21:58.
by 50`6 to Hunslet Hawks. York City Knights will now face | :21:59. | :22:00.
the Hawks for a place Now, she says she owes him | :22:01. | :22:03.
everything, a horse that's taken her to the Olympics, | :22:04. | :22:16.
World and European championships. At the weekend, though, | :22:17. | :22:17.
there were tearful scenes in North Yorkshire as Northalldrton's | :22:18. | :22:20.
Nicola Wilson retired her f`mous Phil Connell was there | :22:21. | :22:22.
to capture the emotion. You are such a clever boy. Not many | :22:23. | :22:31.
become legends and national treasures. Art with Nicola Wilson, | :22:32. | :22:38.
Buzz has become just that. @t the weekend, now aged 17, he was retired | :22:39. | :22:44.
from competitive life. A te`rful day for the crowd at the horse trials, | :22:45. | :22:51.
and of course his devoted rhder It is quite emotional. How could it not | :22:52. | :22:56.
be? He has been phenomenal `nd taken us all over the world. And we owe it | :22:57. | :23:02.
to him to do it right. I do not think I could do this, you know | :23:03. | :23:09.
What makes him special? I al going to go for a walk! He has won | :23:10. | :23:20.
Olympic, world and European titles. Known as a reliable trailbl`zer for | :23:21. | :23:25.
the British team. The owner and breeder said that his rare talent | :23:26. | :23:28.
was not quite what she had first expected. When he was delivdred and | :23:29. | :23:35.
stood up, I thought it was the ugliest ever in my life. Whdn it was | :23:36. | :23:40.
OK I rang up a friend and I said, if you want to see the ugliest one | :23:41. | :23:45.
come and see this one. Enorlous head, enormous tears on top of the | :23:46. | :23:49.
enormous head and front feet which were not a pair. He has takdn us all | :23:50. | :23:55.
over the world. And he has lade my dreams come true. I owe him | :23:56. | :24:00.
everything. And in this fin`l outing, he was just pipped `t the | :24:01. | :24:03.
post into an impressive second place. The next row special horse, | :24:04. | :24:07.
which the British team will find difficult to replace. | :24:08. | :24:14.
I think he looks quite nice The ugliest horse? Nicola did vdry well | :24:15. | :24:23.
to get through that intervidw. Now the weather and I have to confess | :24:24. | :24:28.
the heating went on last night. It did look like autumn for thd past | :24:29. | :24:32.
couple `` it did not look lhke autumn for the past couple of weeks | :24:33. | :24:36.
but now it does. Some bright conditions above North Shields. As | :24:37. | :24:41.
we look from South Shields `nd down here from the ferry. It would not | :24:42. | :24:46.
have been very bright and you would have been lucky if you could have | :24:47. | :24:49.
seen the other side of the river because much of the North E`st is | :24:50. | :24:54.
shrouded in Cloud, missed and Mark. Cumbria enjoyed the sunshind. Some | :24:55. | :24:59.
bright conditions first thing. Cloud and rain spreading from the North to | :25:00. | :25:03.
most places and some rain whll become heavy as we get to the | :25:04. | :25:08.
afternoon. Eastern areas have a change of fortune with high pressure | :25:09. | :25:12.
in charge of the weather. High`pressure moving to the south | :25:13. | :25:15.
and west. Wind is coming around from a westerly direction. We have lost | :25:16. | :25:21.
that miserable easterly last week. That is heading our way. Th`t will | :25:22. | :25:26.
bring the rain tomorrow. He`ding into this evening and overnhght dry | :25:27. | :25:30.
for most places will stop wdll into the night as well. Clearing spells. | :25:31. | :25:36.
Some mist and fog patches. @ fairly cold night with two bridges in the | :25:37. | :25:40.
towns and cities of rigging at about ten. `` with temperatures. `` | :25:41. | :25:48.
hovering at about ten. IBM of the night, thicker cloud and reducing | :25:49. | :25:53.
some patches of rain in northern areas. Into tomorrow morning, that | :25:54. | :25:58.
cloud is spreading south. Bdcoming more widespread. Especially in the | :25:59. | :26:05.
afternoon. Extensive rain rhght across the region. Northern parts, | :26:06. | :26:09.
some dry interludes in the afternoon. Western areas, hdavy | :26:10. | :26:12.
bursts. | :26:13. | :28:04. |
