A big rise in the number of ambulances turned

:00:00.:00:00.

away from overcrowded hospitals last winter.

Why an 11-year-old girl is pleading with education

bosses to let her to go to a special school.

Recognition at last for her contribution to the war effort.

Jennie Johnson is finally honoured on her 91st birthday.

:00:47.:00:50.

cloudy right now but this time tomorrow it will be filling a lot

more like summer. Patients are diverted from Accident

:00:52.:01:07.

and Emergency departments It has prompted fresh warnings about

:01:08.:01:09.

the pressures facing the NHS. to divert ambulances away 115 times

:01:10.:01:25.

in just three months. Many patients are brought

:01:26.:01:27.

here - to Newcastle. Partly because it is a specialist

:02:10.:02:15.

a lot of pressure on staff. It seems to ours when we at the receiving

:02:21.:02:25.

are already under pressure Limmy get this column that we need to take

:02:26.:02:30.

more patients. It is of course, people feel that this is just

:02:31.:02:33.

additional pressure they could do without. In general, we haven't ever

:02:34.:02:39.

turned patients away. Why not? We just don't feel we can. We just

:02:40.:02:45.

don't feel it is right. The hospitals that are having to divert

say that it is a last resort and in patient safety the issued a joint

:03:18.:03:21.

patients. Been able to divert patients away from the hospital...

:03:22.:03:29.

I spoke to some paramedics today anonymously. They tell me they hate

:03:30.:03:35.

having to take both the angle lenses and the patients. These longer

:03:36.:03:39.

distances to reach another hospital. Also NHS England said they were

:03:40.:03:43.

looking into the way the Ambulance Service was working. They felt that

happened on the town's seafront, A woman in her early

30s has been arrested, How special do your needs have

:04:00.:04:03.

to be, before you can get place It's a question being asked

:04:04.:04:10.

by a family on Wearside, after 11-year-old Chloe Errington,

:04:11.:04:14.

who has autism and cerebral palsy, was told she can't attend

:04:15.:04:17.

the school she wants. Instead, Chloe has been told

:04:18.:04:20.

by Sunderland Council she must go to a mainstream school,

:04:21.:04:23.

one she says won't be right for her. Chloe is one tough girl, who's

:04:24.:04:28.

battled through primary school, but now faces the whole

:04:29.:04:35.

new challenge of So should she go to Sunderland's

:04:36.:04:38.

Barbara Priestman Academy, where staff are specially trained

:04:39.:04:44.

to help her cope with her autism, Or the mainstream Biddick

:04:45.:04:47.

Academy in Washington? The council says it

:04:48.:04:51.

should be the other. She's very behind her peers. She is

:04:52.:05:05.

saying to me, she can't cope any more, and that is because she can't.

:05:06.:05:12.

The Academy does have an attached autism unit and is much bigger,

:05:13.:05:16.

doesn't have the same facilities and Chloe would have to use a less. 2/3

:05:17.:05:22.

of children with autism do go to mainstream schools, so why do Chloe

:05:23.:05:25.

and her parents especially want her to come here rather than to a

:05:26.:05:30.

mainstream school containing an autism unit? I don't think it is the

:05:31.:05:34.

right level of support for her. Throughout this cool, all of the

:05:35.:05:39.

teachers any other school would be qualified to deal with her needs. As

:05:40.:05:46.

far as I'm aware, Chloe would be the only physically disabled pupil in

:05:47.:05:47.

the entire school. Sunderland's education

:05:48.:05:48.

department were unable to provide an interview -

:05:49.:05:49.

instead they told us that Chloe's mum thinks it is a done deal

:05:50.:05:54.

and it is about cost. Chloe's parents will

:05:55.:06:12.

formally appeal. But Chloe's written her own

:06:13.:06:13.

letter to the council. I want to go to the school because I

:06:14.:06:22.

will be my very own life changing experience. I want to make my life a

:06:23.:06:26.

whole lot easier. I would also love to make lots of new friends. I don't

:06:27.:06:32.

really have any. I would be the same as anyone else.

:06:33.:06:35.

It's five-year-old Finley Ingles from Middlesbrough.

:06:36.:06:40.

A couple of months ago we followed Finley and his family to America,

:06:41.:06:43.

where he went for treatment for a rare brain tumour.

:06:44.:06:46.

Well, he's been back at school this week, and

:06:47.:06:49.

Back at school and back playing with his friends.

:06:50.:07:04.

Finley's family hoped the operation in America would change his life.

:07:05.:07:12.

It's still early days - but remarkably he's now gone six

:07:13.:07:14.

The worry is still there, and it is still early days.

:07:15.:07:24.

He's a totally different boy at the moment.

:07:25.:07:28.

He's enjoying his childhood, which is what we all are

:07:29.:07:30.

He is able to play without being afraid of

:07:31.:07:34.

something that is going to happen, and without what we used to call his

:07:35.:07:37.

Finley used to suffer up to 15 seizures a day.

:07:38.:07:44.

It's all right. It's all right.

:07:45.:07:48.

His rare brain tumour couldn't be operated on in this country

:07:49.:07:56.

They raised ?200,000 so he could have ground-breaking surgery.

:07:57.:08:03.

We think we have alleviated about 90% of this.

:08:04.:08:10.

We hope that the destruction of this lesion will stop future seizures.

:08:11.:08:16.

Now back home, Finley has enjoyed his first full

:08:17.:08:19.

It is brilliant to see him back after

:08:20.:08:23.

all the effort at the school and that the community went through to

:08:24.:08:26.

have him on the other side of his journey

:08:27.:08:28.

now and back with us and

:08:29.:08:30.

seeing him integrate back into class.

:08:31.:08:31.

Finley's family say he still has a long way to go.

:08:32.:08:39.

But he's now happier than he's ever been.

:08:40.:08:58.

A catholic priest who still money and give it his housekeeper has

:08:59.:09:03.

escaped a jail sentence. He fell in love with women and love gifts on

:09:04.:09:07.

her and her family over a 14 month period. He was in charge of Saint

:09:08.:09:11.

Cuthbert 's Church in County Durham. The Justice Wright has fought as an

:09:12.:09:15.

aberration and handed down an 18 month suspended sentence. The priest

:09:16.:09:18.

has agreed to pay back the ?50,000 within 3 months.

:09:19.:09:19.

Since it was introduced last June, a digital ticketing system

:09:20.:09:22.

for the Windermere ferry in the Lake District has caused

:09:23.:09:24.

As we reported last year, one local councillor even threatened

:09:25.:09:28.

But it seems a compromise from Cumbria County Council

:09:29.:09:33.

It seems the shoreside ticketing system and winger continues to cost

:09:34.:09:56.

some frustration. Under the old system, as you are coming across on

:09:57.:10:00.

the boat, the attendants used to come and collect the cash. Because

:10:01.:10:07.

over this period has refused to listen to any of the locals who know

:10:08.:10:11.

what goes on here. Business owners say it is causing them problems.

:10:12.:10:15.

Beget a lot of international customers and they can't use the

:10:16.:10:19.

machine because they need to be able to speak English. Getting spat over

:10:20.:10:25.

from the other side of the lake is hard. In a statement on the county

:10:26.:10:29.

council told us that it realises the ticket machine system here has

:10:30.:10:32.

fallen short of customer expectations. But it says it is in

:10:33.:10:36.

the process of offering a compromise. It says in the near

:10:37.:10:40.

future hate card payment system will be operated on board the Windermere

:10:41.:10:44.

Ferry. But will it appease campaigners? I think it is not a

:10:45.:10:49.

victory because it is still going to be a very confusing and chaotic

:10:50.:10:52.

system. The important change that needs to happen is to revert to all

:10:53.:11:00.

on bed bat on-board payment, both in cash and cards. It is unclear how

:11:01.:11:05.

the new system would I don't get how willing to give the benefit of the

:11:06.:11:10.

doubt. And we don't want to initially business what they are put

:11:11.:11:14.

in place, but if it doesn't work, we'll just keep lobbying. It remains

:11:15.:11:17.

to be seen if the ferry running straight lines can perform a

:11:18.:11:19.

ticketing U-turn. Much of the debate surrounding

:11:20.:11:24.

the upcoming Tees Valley Mayoral Election will be about skills,

:11:25.:11:26.

jobs and transport. But the mayor will also have

:11:27.:11:29.

a role to play in developing the region's cultural scene,

:11:30.:11:32.

and trying to attract more tourists. In the latest report in our series

:11:33.:11:35.

looking at the election David Macmillan has helped

:11:36.:11:37.

himself to a tasty treat. If you come to Redcar,

:11:38.:11:44.

it's the law It is the sweet, sharp taste

:11:45.:11:46.

of the Tees seaside, Well, we've had

Prince Charles come down People have come from Australia,

:11:52.:11:56.

New Zealand, America... Tourism hasn't exactly been a boom

industry in the Tees Valley, and this Saltburnish

restaurant owner says there's a lack of long-term

:12:06.:12:07.

support for sector. If we could just put a bit

:12:08.:12:10.

more money and vision, passion into tourism, then I think

:12:11.:12:13.

the rewards coming back to the economy could far outweigh the money

:12:14.:12:16.

that we'd put in A vibrant cultural scene is

:12:17.:12:20.

important too, but the director of MIMA says that doesn't have

:12:21.:12:25.

to mean high culture. It is about food on the table,

:12:26.:12:28.

the way we commune together, how we look after our

:12:29.:12:31.

heritage and things One of the biggest exports from this

:12:32.:12:33.

region was Ridley Scott and Blade Runner, the opening

:12:34.:12:39.

sequence, is Teesside. That's the steelworks, that's

:12:40.:12:43.

something we should be proud of. This view tells so many stories

:12:44.:12:47.

about the Tees Valley. There is the ingenuity of being able

:12:48.:12:50.

to generate electricity away out at sea,

:12:51.:12:53.

there is what is now unfortunately a monument

:12:54.:12:55.

to the history of steel-making and there's the splendour

:12:56.:12:59.

of the Saltburn coast. And while over the years, people

:13:00.:13:02.

have quite rightly taken pride and identified themselves with the

:13:03.:13:05.

region's industry, perhaps people haven't had enough confidence

:13:06.:13:08.

in the region's beauty. Still to come: the weekend's sports

news with Dawn Thewlis. The young mum who's

are. When did you get it? It has just arrived today. Has a? 72 years

after the war ended, Jennie Johnson's cogitation has been

recognised. She was born in Sunderland. Back in 1944 along with

:14:32.:14:36.

her twin sister she joined a section of the special operations executive.

:14:37.:14:40.

She worked in a spy training centre. As a radio operator she would tune

he was going to get something, but she didn't there is going to be

flooding back. I did my bit and that was the important thing. I don't

want any more. Cheers. A young mum from York has splashed

:15:43.:15:53.

out around ?25,000 on her obsession Sarah Warriner has even spent around

big theme parks in America. Phil Chapman went to her

:16:13.:16:16.

Disney-themed home. My name's Sarah and

:16:17.:16:17.

I just love Disney. Sarah blames her

:16:18.:16:19.

husband Robbie for her Disney obsession which started

:16:20.:16:23.

when they celebrated the renewal of their wedding vows with the first

:16:24.:16:26.

of many trips to Disneyland Paris. Yeah, that's when it

:16:27.:16:31.

all started and I think it was my husband's fault

:16:32.:16:33.

because he decided he wanted to go there, and then we

:16:34.:16:37.

just caught the bug. And that expensive Disney bug has

since spread to every single corner Now, we are in my Mickey

:16:41.:16:50.

and Minnie Mouse dining room. With all my beautiful snow globes

:16:51.:16:56.

and Disney traditions. I've also got a Mickey

:16:57.:17:03.

Mouse telephone. And now we are in my

:17:04.:17:06.

Minnie Mouse kitchen with all my Minnie Mouse cups

:17:07.:17:08.

and pictures and my calendars and this

:17:09.:17:11.

is where I make my Disney-themed birthday cakes, especially

:17:12.:17:14.

for me and my daughter. # My power flurries through the air

it's the Phantom Manor ride And I'm going to have

:17:24.:17:28.

both my legs done Disney themed and then I've got the Tim Burton and

:17:29.:17:34.

trip to Disneyland Paris in recent years, Sarah's

:17:40.:17:44.

:17:45.:17:46.

bothered me anyway.# Well. Wry comment on what other got

:17:47.:18:00.

in this board? It's crunch-time for our two

:18:01.:18:10.

Premier League clubs, Of their remaining fixtures,

:18:11.:18:12.

Middlesbrough's home game against Burnley tomorrow looks one

:18:13.:18:14.

of the most winnable. As you can see Sunderland's plight

:18:15.:18:16.

is even more desperate - ten points adrift ahead of Sunday's

:18:17.:18:19.

home game against Manchester United. David Moyes could yet face an FA

:18:20.:18:34.

sanction of a post-match remarks that he might slap a female BBC

:18:35.:18:38.

reporter. For now he has been the controversy behind him as it tends

:18:39.:18:41.

to focus on Nicola's Nesbitt but fading hopes of avoiding relegation.

:18:42.:18:45.

The players have been watching DVDs of their recent great escapes,

:18:46.:18:50.

including last year's victory over Manchester United. No it is a

:18:51.:18:58.

massive asset. We are not relegated yet and we still have a chance and

:18:59.:19:03.

we'll push as hard as you can. Moyes knows that if his side failed to

:19:04.:19:06.

score for a 7 match any road they will take another giant stride back

:19:07.:19:10.

to the championship. Is it 1 of the covers periods you have had? I have

:19:11.:19:15.

had lots of tough period as a football manager, if you come into

:19:16.:19:19.

this game, you never know when they will be. I think there's lots of

:19:20.:19:24.

tough periods. We are at the bottom of the league. I never thought it

:19:25.:19:29.

was about me personally, it is about the team. On and off the pitch, this

:19:30.:19:35.

is not a wiki will remember fondly. But a surprise win over United would

:19:36.:19:41.

at least give the car's something to smile about. Middlesbrough paid for

:19:42.:19:45.

the attack minded... By conceding 4 at the other end. Hard to take to

:19:46.:19:50.

the new head coach Bruce is still quite confident. Frustration in

:19:51.:19:54.

terms of getting a result, of course it has been frustratingly I know

:19:55.:19:58.

there is a lot of work that has gone in. The staff upstairs and everybody

:19:59.:20:07.

deserves a victory, and no more than the players. I'm sure, giving a

:20:08.:20:15.

little bit of luck that we need, we will getting the points that we

:20:16.:20:16.

need. Championship leaders Newcastle

:20:17.:20:17.

have a tough away trip to promotion hopefuls Sheffield Wednesday

:20:18.:20:20.

in the tea-time kick off tomorrow. By then Brighton who play

:20:21.:20:22.

QPR tonight could have Wednesday beat the Magpies

:20:23.:20:24.

at St James' Park on Boxing Day and will be under pressure

:20:25.:20:29.

to cement their place Both sides go into the game off

:20:30.:20:32.

the back of a win and Newcastle fans will have to make an extra effort

:20:33.:20:37.

to be heard having been restricted to just over 3,000

:20:38.:20:40.

tickets for the match, which will see one of Hillsborough's

:20:41.:20:42.

biggest attendances of the season. If we don't have 9000

:20:43.:20:48.

6000 in other games, hopefully this 3000 is there

:20:49.:20:50.

and we can count that and they can help the team like they've done

:20:51.:20:54.

in the whole season. It is a pity that

:20:55.:20:57.

they can't go more. But I will be really

:20:58.:21:04.

pleased to celebrate. Elsewhere, BBC Radio Cumbria

:21:05.:21:09.

will have commentary on play-off hopefuls

:21:10.:21:11.

Carlisle at home to Notts County, while BBC Tees DAB will concentrate

:21:12.:21:14.

on Hartlepool at the other Blyth Spartans can seal promotion

:21:15.:21:17.

to National League North While in the Northern League,

:21:18.:21:22.

Division One leaders North Shields take on South Shields

:21:23.:21:26.

in a potential title decider. Now, it's the Grand National

:21:27.:21:31.

tomorrow and little Bradley Lowery who has cancer will be a special

to go to the big race, it's Geordie trainer

to be honest he doesn't Definitely Red is trained

has been better than perfect. In fact the only thing that is not

:22:25.:22:28.

perfect is the horse's name. The second E in Definitely was

:22:29.:22:32.

missed out when he was registered. The previous owners were sitting

:22:33.:22:38.

in a pub and decided to call him Definitely Red,

:22:39.:22:42.

and they spelt it wrong. He has won 3 races so far this

season, including the Grimthorpe Chase at Doncaster

:22:48.:22:58.

where he powered ahead of the field Brian is used to seeing

:23:15.:23:17.

He is pretty useful. Bid you ever think you would

six of rugby union's Premiership have disappeared

but Newcastle Falcons could still move up the table

:23:58.:24:00.

if they beat nearest rivals Alex Tait who scored

:24:01.:24:03.

against the Cherry and Whites in the Falcons victory in September

:24:04.:24:07.

will make his 200th appearance for the club having

:24:08.:24:10.

signed a new three deal. And after last weeks drubbing

at Harlequins the Falcons Never likes to lose in a manner that

:24:14.:24:27.

be dead. It is uncharacteristic of us. To put a performance like we did

:24:28.:24:32.

last weekend. Form has been good this year, we've listed up and put

:24:33.:24:35.

in good performances at home. But Gloucester are a tough outfit and

:24:36.:24:39.

had a good win at the weekend against Cardiff. There has to be at

:24:40.:24:43.

our best and make sure we put in a good performance.

:24:44.:24:43.

On the first day of cricket's new County Championship season

Yorkshire are taking on Hampshire at Headingley.

:24:51.:24:58.

- the weather. -- time for the weather.

:24:59.:25:13.

It has been quite cloudy, but the cloud behind me are starting to

:25:14.:25:18.

clear from the south. The cloud is going to do that through the night

:25:19.:25:22.

to night. Take a look at the map this is how things are looking. The

:25:23.:25:26.

cloud is going to move away northwards and we will have some

:25:27.:25:30.

clear spells developing. It will be quite a chilly night, temperatures

:25:31.:25:35.

dipping down to around 4 or 5 C. Possibly a touch of grass frost.

:25:36.:25:40.

That takes us into Saturday morning, quite a chilly start, but

:25:41.:25:44.

temperatures are going to warm up quickly. Saturday is looking like a

:25:45.:25:48.

lovely day, blue sunshine across the board. It is going to be feeling

:25:49.:25:54.

warm. Temperatures for the north-east around 16 C. Some parts

:25:55.:25:58.

of the site in County Durham could yet get up to around 20 C. For

:25:59.:26:02.

Cumbria it is a little cooler, temperatures on the coast around

:26:03.:26:07.

12 C. Further inland it will be around 14 or 15. Saturday night and

:26:08.:26:11.

into Sunday, repeat performance. Quite a chilly night, clear skies, a

:26:12.:26:16.

touch of the mist and fog. Temperatures dropping to around 4 or

:26:17.:26:23.

5 C. Sunday, another very good day in the forecast. Some good spells of

:26:24.:26:29.

sunshine, perhaps a little bit more in the way of cloud especially

:26:30.:26:34.

across northern Cumbria and Northumberland. In general it is a

:26:35.:26:38.

dry and sunny day with temperatures up to around 16 C, feeling quite

:26:39.:26:45.

warm in that sunshine. Taking a look at a pressure chart, you can see

:26:46.:26:52.

that things are all change at the start of the week. A cold front

:26:53.:26:55.

moves down from the north and will introduce a lot more in the way of

:26:56.:26:58.

cloud and bring some colder air as well. From Monday and Tuesday, a lot

:26:59.:27:05.

of cloud across the board and temperatures back down to where they

:27:06.:27:09.

should be of this time of year. Saturday and Sunday we are looking

:27:10.:27:12.

at highs of 16 C, Monday and Tuesday it is more like 10 or 11 C. To sum

:27:13.:27:19.

up, it is looking a good 1 to start the Easter holidays. Lots of warm

:27:20.:27:24.

sunshine, staying dry, but keep an eye out for these chilly night

:27:25.:27:27.

because it will feel quite chilly 1st thing in the morning.

:27:28.:27:34.

Make the most of it, don't forget this ungreen. Have a great weekend.

:27:35.:27:37.
