and could Middlesbrough be relegated from the Premier

It's a dramatic end to the season for our region's

At the weekend, Newcastle United, already promoted, secured

the Championship title at St James' Park.

But, down the road, despite winning their final match,

Hartlepool United were relegated from League Two and dropped out

Sunderland, of course, were already relegated

from the Premier League, and Middlesbrough will follow them

if they lose at top-of-the table Chelsea tonight.

Well, we've been gathering reaction from fans and asking what it

Let's go to Stuart Whincup, who's at Stamford Bridge for the Boro's

Well, a year ago today, Middlesbrough's players were

celebrating in the town's buyers after securing promotion to the

Premier League. 12 months on comedy picture is very different. The

optimism is disappeared. Middlesbrough could be relegated

tonight. To stop that, they need to beat Chelsea or at least get a job

draw. To give an idea of how they get at that is, they haven't won

here at Stamford Bridge since 1975. Chelsea have been the best team all

season and are expected to be crowned Premier need champion in

next week. We spoke to some fans however who are quite confident.

Would you have a chance, it slim chance, that going to a big club

when unexpected to do everything. But he's have a 20-1 to win. We can

get something off than at least. I think 1- no bar, are barring the

greater to score. I think we'll take it all away to the last game. If we

can go to Liverpool with a mathematical chance, then that is

all we can ask for. Around 1500 Boro fans have made that journey from

Teesside for this kind game. They've made that journey knowing that

Middlesbrough have not run since that victory one Norway since that

victory over Sunderland. Well, Newcastle will be

in the Premier League next season. They cemented their promotion by

football league club for 124 seasons and 485 of them they have been in

the top division. -- for 85 of them they have. Many fans would say that

they belong in the top flight, but it is being a nail-biting time.

but as champions after beating And for the fans, well,

The best time of my life. There is a hefty financial reward for getting

promoted. It is thought to be in the region of ?270 million for a

Newcastle United, plus of course, all of the exposure internationally

that comes from getting promoted to the top flight. Despite that, there

is no promotion print parade planned for this year, but, after a long

hard season, everyone here is celebrating. When you play 46 games

in a very difficult season after going down. To do it the way we did

in the whole season, I think that is really emotional and I'm really

proud of it. And Rafa Benitez is expected to have

talks about his future Two years ago, he said he'd only

sell the club if they won a trophy or qualified for the Champions

League. So, as always with Newcastle United,

amidst the celebrations None of the skin to win the title

Well, there is never an easy way to be relegated from the football

league, but what happened here at Victoria Park at the weekend was

particularly painful. Hartlepool united, relegated from league

football, their fate decided in the final few minutes of the football

season. In Hartlepool the atmosphere was best described as the slated.

Fans reflecting on a football season that has been well and truly grim.

They played terrible, but life goes on, and we hope they can bounce back

next year. It helps the town to have a club in the league, boost the

economy and get people involved in things. That's something that we

have lost now wouldn't it. Coupled with problems off the pitch, it is a

season that Hartlepool would rather forget. In January their manager was

sacked at less than a year into his contract. In April Dave Jones was

sacked with the club chairman resigning just a week later.

Hartlepool must now put this behind him. What worries me is the

direction of the pitch, because there have been too many bad

decisions made over the last year or two. This has resulted in the team

being where it was on Saturday at 7:30pm. It is too early to discuss

what the impact of non-league football will have on the town. The

gig... Going out of the league will affect everybody, especially local

businesses. Like me, who couldn't get much closer to the ground. Today

one die-hard fan had only bought a season ticket. I think people will

continued to support the team. It's important, very important to keep

the club alive. And given a ticket you like. At the top end of the two,

it was a very different league story, Carlisle still chasing

promotion by securing their place in the play-offs. As you might expect

fans are very happy. Absolutely, they've deserved it,

they were in the top We should have got promoted,

but I'm delighted. I've come down for my tickets

today and looking forward to going to Wembley.

Ecstatic, because I've had a good bet on at the start of the season

with Newcastle and Carlisle just It is a knockout,

really, from now on. You know, it's a sprint now,

it's not a marathon. But I think Carlisle have a chance,

I think they really do. At this end of the league, a farmer

somewhere mood -- a far more sombre mood, Carlisle -- Hartlepool keeping

their heads up. And Jeff and Steve will have

all match action in team talk - Northumberland Conservatives have

vowed to cancel a multi-million pound scheme to move the council's

headquarters from Labour say their proposals,

which would have seen shops and houses built on the existing

site of Morpeth's County Hall , would have saved money in the long

term and create jobs. But local Tories, who have now

replaced Labour as the biggest party in the council,

say the plan is a waste of Our political correspondent

because the council has control of that site that is so central to that

town and we are going to make sure that it is the start of a new broker

outlook for this summer, we'll just have to wait and see. Shorter term

As we've already heard, it was quite a weekend of football

Steve, you went through the highs and the lows in your career,

promotion and relegation, what's it like playing

Let's start on a positive note, with the Championship trophy landing

at St James's Park - and on our desk, timing

We didn't exactly see this trophy or these pictures. They looked like

they'd won it. Then they look like they lost it, pressure got to

Brighton, and then Newcastle took the opportunity. Lovely scenes, you

know that it's like to lift the trophy. Promotion is great, but this

is the icing on the cake. It was it was events elsewhere that within a

dictate what -- where the title went. You're very aware of it,

especially when 53,000 people out there and they know what's going on.

They were probably a little bit subdued when the third goal went in,

and seconds later, very different. Yes, and this was the goal that

ultimately won the title for Newcastle because Brighton were

pegged back for a draw. Do you feel a Chris Newton? Yeah, because they

thought they were up. Yeah, I will meet him next week,

but it was important for him, for us, to feel the love of the fans

and the passion in the stadium. You appreciate more when you're

getting older and then you feel the emotion around the city,

around the stadium and, obviously, I think it is the right time to talk

when everything is fine. The main thing is to ensure

that we both share the same ambition about how to improve,

how to do the right Let's stay with the good news -

and after looking like they'd blown their chance of promotion

from League two, Carlisle United came from behind

to win at Exeter City - who they'll now meet

in the semifinal of the play-offs. First leg on Sunday. Their best back

row, and how well does them a team of momentum to in the play-offs?

Yeah I think playing Exeter in the semifinal, having beaten them at the

weekend will stand them in good said. Fortunately, we don't have a

play-off at Berwick, they only needed a point to make sure they

avoided the relegation play-offs in the two.

They had to beat Doncaster, and hope Newport didn't beat Notts County.

get two goals back. Not enough big performances. A huge win for them,

two great goals from the youngster as well. It wasn't on the last game

was it. You don't get relegated on the last game, it is a 46 game

season. Newport when it right at the death, with a pretty decent goal.

Devastation for Hartlepool. I think they scored

in the 89th minute. Like I say, just absolutely gutted

for everyone involved at the club. Hartlepool United's my life and I'm

absolutely devastated. We certainly couldn't have done any

more, I'm so disappointed. The league's not won or lost on one

game, on one day, is it? We can't complain, to be

honest with you, as fans. It's what effect it's

going to have on the club. Every single member of staff

that's in the offices, that's coaching at the moment,

who's a physio, who's a kit man, they all want the best

for Hartlepool United and that's all they give and all

they'll give next year. So this club will bounceback

and it has to bounce back. To the list of teams

going down, you can add York City and Sunderland -

and, if they lose at Chelsea A draw would keep Middlesbrough

hanging on by their finger tips. But they'll surely have

to go all-out for three points at Stamford Bridge,

Steve? Not for me Jeff, I think you'll be

foolish to go to Chelsea on the front foot. They've had some good

points away from home this season. Chelsea have got too much firepower.

They need to go there and try and frustrate Chelsea in cats on the

counterattack. And maybe just that a goal like that.

This is how the table looks - it's out of Boro's hands, really.

I den even think 37 points would be enough, just. Is veritably difficult

one. Sunderland, as we said,

are already down,but they salvaged a bit of pride and gave Boro

a lifeline with a win at Hull City which was still too little,

too late, I'm afraid. It was, when two performances have

threatened a result recently, but they needed more of this away from

them. Being in the game after half an hour, you need a goalkeeper to do

well. He's proven every week that he is a perennially goalkeeper. And

Sunderland are to be built, I think he's going to be one of the first to
