Good evening. 11.00pm in Scotland. | :00:10. | :00:10.
Her family say they have no idea why anyone would take her lhfe. | :00:11. | :00:13.
But tonight an investigation's underway after a woman | :00:14. | :00:17.
was attacked in a busy street in broad daylight | :00:18. | :00:19.
27-year-old Jodie Wilkinson died after being stabbed | :00:20. | :00:25.
Our correspondent, Peter Harris, reports. | :00:26. | :00:31.
Jodie had been walking in the middle of the afternoon. | :00:32. | :00:35.
Then there was shouting and what looked like a largd fight. | :00:36. | :00:39.
This is a live and fast-moving enquiry. | :00:40. | :00:47.
There's more people involved in this incident, we know that | :00:48. | :00:52.
I want to appeal to anybody in the area who knows | :00:53. | :00:57.
who was responsible, or those individuals themselves | :00:58. | :01:00.
to come forward as soon as possible so we can move this enquiry forward | :01:01. | :01:03.
Scenes of crime officers have been at work all day. | :01:04. | :01:09.
A 25-year-old man with Jodid, also stabbed, has now left hospital. | :01:10. | :01:13.
The fact it all happened in the middle of the | :01:14. | :01:17.
There were children coming home from school at that time, | :01:18. | :01:22.
It was a sociable time of the day, really. | :01:23. | :01:29.
It was in broad daylight and I think that's what madd | :01:30. | :01:32.
it even more shocking, just the amount of people that | :01:33. | :01:34.
We're very saddened for the community here. | :01:35. | :01:39.
We want to do our best to support the community. | :01:40. | :01:41.
Our building is open, we're open, we're available to talk to `nybody | :01:42. | :01:44.
that wants to talk over this, because obviously it | :01:45. | :01:46.
Jodie Wilkinson's family have left tributes at the scene here. | :01:47. | :01:51.
They say she was a devoted `untie and a loving sister who would do | :01:52. | :01:55.
They say they've no idea whx anybody would want to take her life. | :01:56. | :02:04.
Extra patrols are in the area to reassure the public. | :02:05. | :02:07.
The police stress what happdned to Jodie was not a random attack. | :02:08. | :02:11.
At this stage, we do not have the weapon or weapons. | :02:12. | :02:17.
Again, the appeal today is not just for information about | :02:18. | :02:20.
who was responsible, it's about potentially | :02:21. | :02:22.
People coming home last night potentially covered in blood. | :02:23. | :02:26.
That will certainly help thhs investigation if we can recover | :02:27. | :02:31.
Peter joins us from the scene now. What the latest? The update is that | :02:32. | :02:48.
two more men have been arrested one aged 18 and another age 20. That | :02:49. | :02:53.
brings the total in custody to five. The police are still appealhng for | :02:54. | :02:56.
information because they believe anything up to half a dozen more men | :02:57. | :03:01.
may have been involved in this incident. This tonight is still very | :03:02. | :03:06.
much an ongoing investigation. Thanks, Peter. | :03:07. | :03:10.
Figures show that in the past year growing numbers of patients have had | :03:11. | :03:13.
to wait in ambulances outside the region's hospitals | :03:14. | :03:16.
because there's not enough space for them on the wards. | :03:17. | :03:19.
In one case an ambulance waited outside a hospital | :03:20. | :03:21.
Hospitals can be fined by NHS England if they don't admit | :03:22. | :03:25.
This is a knotty problem that the NHS has wrestled | :03:26. | :03:31.
with across the country, and in our region, for many years. | :03:32. | :03:34.
Essentially a patient is transported to a hospital, | :03:35. | :03:37.
but then rather than getting onto a ward immediately | :03:38. | :03:40.
A freedom of information repuest submitted to all the ambulance | :03:41. | :03:46.
service trusts by the Labour Party has revealed some figures of how | :03:47. | :03:49.
In the North East Ambulance Service Trust between 2013-14, | :03:50. | :03:57.
1,314 patients waited for over an hour outside | :03:58. | :04:01.
But by 2014-15, that figure had risen to 2,042 - | :04:02. | :04:09.
There were also increases in the North West, the area | :04:10. | :04:16.
A fourfold increase for the ambulance trust | :04:17. | :04:29.
there to 15,000 patients in that category. | :04:30. | :04:33.
And in Yorkshire as well, which covers North Yorkshird, | :04:34. | :04:36.
the Ambulance Service trust also recorded | :04:37. | :04:37.
a fourfold increase - 5,000 patients. | :04:38. | :04:38.
Paul Liversedge is from the North East Ambulance Servicd Trust. | :04:39. | :04:41.
I think it's a reflection of the pressures that the NHS | :04:42. | :04:44.
I think hand over delays are something that's | :04:45. | :04:48.
I think, in a sense, it doesn't necessarily relate | :04:49. | :04:54.
to ambulance activity, but certainly demand | :04:55. | :04:56.
on hospitals is far greater now than what it's ever been. | :04:57. | :04:59.
In a separate freedom of information request, | :05:00. | :05:01.
the NHS Trust that runs this hospital revealed that 413 patients | :05:02. | :05:05.
had waited over the length of one hour to actually get out | :05:06. | :05:12.
of the ambulance and onto the wards in the final period of 2015. | :05:13. | :05:18.
The trust says that since then those waits have decreased considdrably | :05:19. | :05:24.
and a special member of staff is placed to actually monitor | :05:25. | :05:28.
the length of time that patients are being seen, | :05:29. | :05:30.
An inquest's heard a man from West Cumbria died | :05:31. | :05:38.
after being ferociously attacked by his pet dog. | :05:39. | :05:40.
Stephen Hodgson suffered injuries to his neck and head at a house | :05:41. | :05:43.
His teenage daughters tried to save him from the dog. | :05:44. | :05:48.
The Staffordshire pitbull-cross died after police used | :05:49. | :05:52.
13 people have been arrested across the North East on suspicion | :05:53. | :06:00.
of trafficking people into the UK for exploitation | :06:01. | :06:02.
Addresses were searched in the Cowgate area | :06:03. | :06:06.
of Newcastle this morning - as well as Houghton-le-Spring | :06:07. | :06:09.
Ten people, who are believed to be the victims of exploitathon, | :06:10. | :06:14.
North East Ambulance Servicd staff have been teaching hundreds | :06:15. | :06:21.
of school children how to save a life. | :06:22. | :06:23.
As part of Restart A Heart Day, pupils have been taught | :06:24. | :06:27.
basic CPR skills, which can double a patient's | :06:28. | :06:30.
Of course, at this age, even learning something potdntially | :06:31. | :06:41.
critical like life-saving - well, it just seems like a bit of fun | :06:42. | :06:45.
And unlike many adults, the children come to weightx matters | :06:46. | :06:48.
like heart massage and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation | :06:49. | :06:53.
I enjoyed it because now I know how to save somebody's life | :06:54. | :06:59.
How important do you think it is to have a go | :07:00. | :07:03.
Because it could save someone's life and you could be a hero. | :07:04. | :07:11.
Although they probably don't have the strength | :07:12. | :07:15.
to save a life themselves, they have the knowledge | :07:16. | :07:17.
now that they can grab an adult they can talk the adult through | :07:18. | :07:20.
If we can save some lives by making our children | :07:21. | :07:26.
knowledgeable, that's got to be a good thing. | :07:27. | :07:30.
They all can't wait to get their hands on the mannequins. | :07:31. | :07:40.
If we can just save one person's life by training these children | :07:41. | :07:42.
Middlesborough's Institute of Modern Art is asking the public | :07:43. | :07:49.
to pick rarely seen artworks from its storerooms | :07:50. | :07:51.
The museum's been criticised for exhibitions that were too | :07:52. | :07:58.
challenging and didn't engage people on Teesside. | :07:59. | :08:00.
It's Middlesbrough's Instittte of Modern Art, but in its storage | :08:01. | :08:06.
We are looking at a Lowry painting, very famous. | :08:07. | :08:14.
The painting by Lowry is ond of hundreds of currently unseen works. | :08:15. | :08:20.
The collection belongs to the town, built up long before Mima, | :08:21. | :08:25.
so the institute now wants the town to tell it what it would | :08:26. | :08:28.
like to see from here in a new permanent display. | :08:29. | :08:31.
They can come here, spend time inside this space | :08:32. | :08:37.
Look at the work and say, "I like this, I like that, | :08:38. | :08:42.
can you explain more what this is about, | :08:43. | :08:44.
The move marked something of a change in Mima's policx. | :08:45. | :08:51.
Ten years old next year, it's exhibitions have somethmes been | :08:52. | :08:54.
seen as too challenging, to obscure and not inclusivd. | :08:55. | :08:59.
The art world as we know it is not necessarily representathve | :09:00. | :09:02.
of all people's understanding of what art is. | :09:03. | :09:05.
I think it's the responsibility of museums like this | :09:06. | :09:08.
The first tours for the public next month. | :09:09. | :09:12.
Final selection will then bd made, with the rarely seen | :09:13. | :09:14.
displayed in a new collection gallery in February. | :09:15. | :09:22.
Football now, and just one score this evening. | :09:23. | :09:24.
In the Championship Newcastle United beat hosts Barnsley 2-0. | :09:25. | :09:32.
That's it from me this evenhng, time now to take a look | :09:33. | :09:35.
It was a luxury today and that cold spell will continue over thd next | :09:36. | :09:48.
few days. -- it was a lot chillier. I mostly dry night. Close p`ls for | :09:49. | :09:59.
many. -- clear spells for m`ny. Some shelter from the north-westdrly | :10:00. | :10:02.
breeze in certain areas. Perhaps some ground frost come tomorrow | :10:03. | :10:07.
morning. A cold start tomorrow but fine and dry with plenty of | :10:08. | :10:13.
sunshine. One or two showers on the north-east coast will urge slowly | :10:14. | :10:16.
inland through the afternoon. Cumbria should they dry throughout | :10:17. | :10:20.
with good sunny spells. That's when we will see the highest aftdrnoon | :10:21. | :10:25.
temperatures up to about 14 Celsius. It will never feel that one, even | :10:26. | :10:29.
with the sunshine, because the breeze also come down from that cold | :10:30. | :10:33.
northerly direction. Over the next few days, a struggle between high | :10:34. | :10:36.
and low pressure between thd east and West. But precious rich they far | :10:37. | :10:41.
enough away from us not to bother us too much. -- that high pressure | :10:42. | :10:48.
should stay far enough away from us. After tomorrow, a fair amount of | :10:49. | :10:52.
cloud on Thursday. A dry picture with temperatures in the low teens | :10:53. | :10:58.
at best. Into Friday and thd weekend, very similar. Mostly dry. | :10:59. | :11:01.
Matt Taylor has a full national forecast shortly. | :11:02. | :11:03. |
