Good evening. inquiry. Join me now | :00:00. | :00:12.
Thousands of workers are secure in their jobs tonight, | :00:13. | :00:14.
with the announcement from Nissan that it's to invest | :00:15. | :00:16.
The carbuilder is to keep production of its Qashqai model | :00:17. | :00:21.
on Wearside and bring anothdr model, the X-trail SUV, | :00:22. | :00:27.
It comes after the company warned that the Brexit vote might | :00:28. | :00:31.
jeopardise future investment at the Sunderland plant. | :00:32. | :00:32.
It's very difficult to make decisions in terms of investments | :00:33. | :00:41.
or envision the future if you don't know how the relationship | :00:42. | :00:44.
is going to be between the TK and the main partner, | :00:45. | :00:51.
the main trade partner of the UK, which is the rest of Europe. | :00:52. | :00:54.
Gerry Jackson joins us live from Nissan's Sunderland plant. | :00:55. | :00:57.
In fact, Gerry, workers leaving the plant today smiling. | :00:58. | :01:03.
A lot of politicians were sliling as well, because less than two weeks | :01:04. | :01:10.
ago, the MP was in Downing Street demanding promises of compensation | :01:11. | :01:14.
if Nissan were to be hit by extra trade tariffs by the EU post Brexit. | :01:15. | :01:21.
Around 80% of cars go for export mainly to Europe. So relief all | :01:22. | :01:26.
round today when the 7000 workers here and 40,000 in the supply chain | :01:27. | :01:29.
were told their jobs could be secured for years to come. | :01:30. | :01:31.
We've seen the shift changes and the mood changes at Nissan | :01:32. | :01:34.
I've been here 25 year and I hope it's going to be | :01:35. | :01:45.
Great news for myself personally and for the region as a whole. | :01:46. | :01:49.
It brings job security again, plan for the future, | :01:50. | :01:52.
because if Nissan went down, that would be it, the North East | :01:53. | :01:54.
We stopped the production lhne at 11 o'clock, which, | :01:55. | :01:58.
believe me, is a big thing, to stop the manufacturing c`r plant. | :01:59. | :02:01.
We pulled all the workforce together and we gave them the good ndws | :02:02. | :02:04.
that we had the new Qashqai secured and we also brought | :02:05. | :02:07.
the news of X-trail, which was a complete | :02:08. | :02:09.
So you can imagine the cheers for Qashqai, third-generation | :02:10. | :02:13.
Qashqai, and you can imagind the surprise and the real ddlight, | :02:14. | :02:16.
and there's an absolute buzz going through the whole | :02:17. | :02:18.
The headline - Nissan has committed to build not just one | :02:19. | :02:22.
This is the five-seater Qashqai that we're so familiar with, | :02:23. | :02:29.
one of the first successful crossover vehicles in the UK. | :02:30. | :02:34.
But it will be the updated version of this, the X-trail that whll also | :02:35. | :02:37.
Seven seats aimed squarely `t active families, and they're hoping to sell | :02:38. | :02:42.
Today's news came amid intense speculation about the futurd | :02:43. | :02:48.
Less than a fortnight ago, Nissan had been locked in t`lks | :02:49. | :02:53.
It had demanded compensation for any punitive tariffs imposed | :02:54. | :02:59.
So what was offered by the Government? | :03:00. | :03:08.
The Nissan man was choosing his words carefully. | :03:09. | :03:12.
We are in a constant dialogte with the Government, as we have been | :03:13. | :03:15.
We've been here a long time, the Government made support | :03:16. | :03:18.
and assurances to Nissan to bring us here, and we've faced a lot | :03:19. | :03:22.
of adversity between the Government and Nissan. | :03:23. | :03:24.
This is just another one of those adversities in the process of making | :03:25. | :03:28.
But in terms of something that can satisfy you in terms of hard cash? | :03:29. | :03:32.
Because tariffs would have been hard cash. | :03:33. | :03:34.
What has the Government offered you to offset | :03:35. | :03:36.
Nissan's not interested in hard cash as a solution to a problem. | :03:37. | :03:42.
Today's announcement potenthally assures carmaking here | :03:43. | :03:46.
until the mid-2020s, well after Brexit. | :03:47. | :03:49.
But there was one note of caution from the local MP. | :03:50. | :03:54.
Those conversations obviously need to continue with the rest | :03:55. | :03:56.
of the car industry, with the rest of the manufacturing | :03:57. | :03:59.
sector across the North East and the whole of the UK. | :04:00. | :04:03.
All other companies in other parts of the country are just | :04:04. | :04:06.
It's the best news I've had, I think, in all | :04:07. | :04:11.
It's not just on Wearside that today's announcement | :04:12. | :04:21.
There are a number of companies throughout the region who rdly | :04:22. | :04:25.
Our business correspondent Han Reeve has been to one in Eaglesclhffe | :04:26. | :04:29.
A decision that affects Sunderland, but new models at Nissan's plant | :04:30. | :04:36.
will also be celebrated here on Teesside. | :04:37. | :04:40.
This car parts company is p`rt of the supply chain that | :04:41. | :04:43.
It's not just wonderful news for us being a current supplier. | :04:44. | :04:52.
I think for the whole region, the whole sector | :04:53. | :04:56.
and for the country, it's a very positive sign. | :04:57. | :04:59.
It's the first major indication of confidence in the UK | :05:00. | :05:02.
But what will new Qashqai and new X-trail models | :05:03. | :05:08.
We'll bid for the new busindss and hopefully retain and hopefully | :05:09. | :05:14.
increase the level of busindss that we get on the new model, | :05:15. | :05:17.
so that will safeguard and possibly increase the number of jobs. | :05:18. | :05:26.
It'll further enhance our prospects for investment in new machines. | :05:27. | :05:29.
The workforce here currentlx stands at 650. | :05:30. | :05:31.
Thanks to today's decision by Nissan, it will stay at that | :05:32. | :05:34.
And, as we heard, there's now the possibility of more | :05:35. | :05:36.
So we don't know what sealed the deal between the Government and | :05:37. | :05:57.
Nissan. The company says no safeguards, no compensation has been | :05:58. | :06:01.
offered. But subsidies, incdntives, investment aid. None of those are | :06:02. | :06:03.
new ideas when it comes to new ideas when it comes to | :06:04. | :06:06.
attracting and keeping vital industries. We might be heading out | :06:07. | :06:11.
of Europe but they turn out a Nissan Qashqai here every 62 seconds at | :06:12. | :06:18.
your's most efficient car plant This place is earning its kdep and | :06:19. | :06:22.
our government cannot afford to see that change. Thank you. | :06:23. | :06:24.
1,300 lives are saved by brdast cancer screenings every year. | :06:25. | :06:26.
But health officials in the North say not enough women are taking | :06:27. | :06:29.
up their invitations for routine mammograms. | :06:30. | :06:31.
Newcastle Hospitals Trust says only 77% of women | :06:32. | :06:33.
who are given appointments are actually attending them. | :06:34. | :06:36.
It's a similar picture across our region. | :06:37. | :06:38.
Steph Cleasby's been talking to two cancer survivors who say thdre's | :06:39. | :06:41.
Tina and Elaine are breast cancer survivors. | :06:42. | :06:51.
Elaine was diagnosed with aggressive stage-three breast cancer | :06:52. | :06:54.
after a routine mammogram, having had no symptoms. | :06:55. | :06:58.
My mum, two sisters and a cousin have all had breast cancer | :06:59. | :07:01.
When I was 53, my first mammogram had no lumps, | :07:02. | :07:07.
bumps, nothing, discharge, absolutely nothing, | :07:08. | :07:12.
That was on February 14th and I was in hospital March 9th | :07:13. | :07:23.
Newcastle's NHS Trust, which also manages the scredning | :07:24. | :07:27.
for North Cumbria, says onlx 77 of women who are given appohntments | :07:28. | :07:31.
It's a similar picture across the region. | :07:32. | :07:36.
South Tyneside is 73%, and Sunderland is 75%. | :07:37. | :07:45.
They're above the minimum standard of 70%, but doctors say these | :07:46. | :07:49.
figures need to be much higher, around 80-85%. | :07:50. | :07:54.
You may not have found a lulp, you may not have noticed anx changes | :07:55. | :07:57.
with your breast, but that's the point | :07:58. | :07:59.
We are trying to pick up cancers that you haven't found yet. | :08:00. | :08:05.
Breast cancers picked up tend to do better, women live longer, treatment | :08:06. | :08:09.
tends to be less aggressive, and more than 90% of women `re alive | :08:10. | :08:14.
Now cancer-free, Tina nine xears clear, and Elaine five years, | :08:15. | :08:24.
the ladies are featuring in a new NHS campaign | :08:25. | :08:27.
to get more women to go for life-saving breast scredning. | :08:28. | :08:31.
Life's just wonderful for me now, yeah. | :08:32. | :08:33.
Had I not gone for my mammogram I wouldn't have seen four of them. | :08:34. | :08:41.
So definitely, definitely, please go for mammograms. | :08:42. | :08:50.
This year's Cumbrian Poppy @ppeal has been launched today | :08:51. | :08:52.
with the help of some classic wartime transport. | :08:53. | :08:55.
Two decorated 1940s buses h`ve been touring the north and south | :08:56. | :08:57.
of the county since this morning, taking in 11 towns and | :08:58. | :09:01.
cities with accompanying dignitaries and VIP guests. | :09:02. | :09:03.
The Royal British Legion is hoping to raise ?41 million | :09:04. | :09:06.
Robin Hood's Bay in the North York Moors National Park has been | :09:07. | :09:12.
scientifically proven to be Yorkshire's top coastline. | :09:13. | :09:15.
A formula devised by a psychologist and travel blogger took | :09:16. | :09:18.
into account sea colour, sand quality and cleanliness. | :09:19. | :09:21.
Dubai tops the worldwide list, just ahead of Blackpool. | :09:22. | :09:33.
I know which one of those would be the warmest! Even if it has been | :09:34. | :09:37.
very mild. Good evening. As we head through the | :09:38. | :09:48.
next few days, we keep this mild weather. Things brighten up as we | :09:49. | :09:52.
head into Friday after a cloudy day. We have a weather front bringing | :09:53. | :09:58.
outbreaks of drizzly rain and that gradually sinks south through the | :09:59. | :10:02.
night, leaving clear spells behind it. Header that, temperaturds will | :10:03. | :10:09.
fall to ten or 11 degrees. ,- before that. Some places could be puite | :10:10. | :10:14.
chilly tomorrow morning. Sole cloud around but it will clear aw`y and we | :10:15. | :10:18.
are in for a decent day. Brhght spells across the board through | :10:19. | :10:24.
Friday afternoon. Temperatures reaching 12 or 13. Fairly lhght | :10:25. | :10:27.
winds but not quite as warm as today. As we head into Saturday we | :10:28. | :10:33.
will have some patches of mhst and fog, especially across parts of | :10:34. | :10:38.
Cumbria in the morning. A mtch cloudy day on Saturday but still | :10:39. | :10:42.
fairly mild. The wind is sthll right and would the influence of high | :10:43. | :10:46.
pressure, we have temperatures of up to 14. The clocks go back on | :10:47. | :10:52.
Saturday night as we head into Sunday, and Sunday looks like | :10:53. | :10:56.
another dry and mild day. F`irly cloudy with temperatures up to 4. | :10:57. | :10:59.
This is the outlook. fine and dry and on the mild side. | :11:00. | :11:05.
My colleague Helen Willetts has with the national picture. | :11:06. | :11:10.
Good evening. The dry October weather is set to continue into the | :11:11. | :11:16.
weekend. It's been kind if you've been on half term. Not that I'm | :11:17. | :11:20.
promising this sort of weather for all. Isn't it lovely, taken on the | :11:21. | :11:25.
Isle of Wight. Our top temperature was | :11:26. | :11:27. |
