Hello, good evening. BBC Two, and

:00:00.:00:15.

The boss of Northumbria Health Trust has apologised to patients

:00:16.:00:17.

at the region's newest hosphtal - for long delays in the time it

:00:18.:00:22.

takes to hand over people being taken there by ambulance.

:00:23.:00:29.

Over a nine month period ambulance crews spent almost 3000

:00:30.:00:31.

hours waiting in queues to hand over patients.

:00:32.:00:33.

The North East Ambulance service says its having a knock on dffect

:00:34.:00:36.

on its ability to respond to emergencies.

:00:37.:00:38.

This exclusive report from Inside Out's Chris Jackson

:00:39.:00:47.

It cost ?19 million and it has been heralded as the way forward for

:00:48.:00:51.

But for some, a wait which should only take 15

:00:52.:00:54.

minutes but can last more than two hours just isn't good enough.

:00:55.:00:57.

There is one man who waited in a queue

:00:58.:00:59.

If There was a good six or seven at least

:01:00.:01:03.

with two paramedics per patient in this corridor

:01:04.:01:05.

He was bleeding from the he`d badly and he is in a queue of people

:01:06.:01:11.

An internal report reveals for just one day last month

:01:12.:01:18.

around one quarter of the albulance crews at Cramlington were stood

:01:19.:01:21.

with their patients for mord than half an hour to check in.

:01:22.:01:24.

Other documents I've seen show from a nine-month period

:01:25.:01:29.

almost 2,900 hours were spent waiting.

:01:30.:01:31.

That is the equivalent of

:01:32.:01:32.

an on duty paramedic stuck in a queue for an entire ye`r.

:01:33.:01:38.

Look at a neighbouring hosphtal the RVI in

:01:39.:01:40.

Newcastle, where it is just six days.

:01:41.:01:42.

In a sense it is unacceptable, in my view.

:01:43.:01:55.

We need those ambulances out on the road going to our patients.

:01:56.:01:58.

When you are queueing up the hospitals you are not able to

:01:59.:02:01.

The hospital has been dogged by delays since opening.

:02:02.:02:04.

The Chief Executive David Evans said they are still grappling to solve

:02:05.:02:09.

It has been our main priority in the last year.

:02:10.:02:13.

It is not right at the moment, we want to fix

:02:14.:02:18.

it, I would offer my person`l apologies and the apologies of the

:02:19.:02:24.

trust to anybody who feels disadvantaged or if their c`re has

:02:25.:02:27.

been affected by having to wait for an ambulance handover.

:02:28.:02:29.

The hospital said there are signs of improvement

:02:30.:02:31.

in the delays but with wintdr around the corner, a solution may be some

:02:32.:02:34.

And you can see the full report from Inside Out

:02:35.:02:46.

for the next 30 days, on the BBC iPlayer.

:02:47.:02:48.

The Business Secretary says he doesn't intend to publish

:02:49.:02:50.

the letter which helped sectre investment in Nissan's

:02:51.:02:52.

Greg Clark says he wouldn't reveal details of letters he sent

:02:53.:02:56.

to the firm as they could bd commercially sensitive

:02:57.:02:58.

But he told the Commons that Nissan had been assured the Governlent

:02:59.:03:03.

was pursuing tariff-free tr`de for the car industry after Brexit.

:03:04.:03:05.

Nissan's investment has sectred 7,000 jobs at the site.

:03:06.:03:13.

Teaching assistants in County Durham are to hold

:03:14.:03:15.

They're in dispute with the county council about major

:03:16.:03:18.

changes to their terms and conditions of employment.

:03:19.:03:21.

They say new "term-time onlx" contracts will mean a pay

:03:22.:03:23.

cut of almost a quarter for most of them.

:03:24.:03:25.

The strike has been called for next Tuesday and Wednesday.

:03:26.:03:28.

The council says the changes are necessary to comply

:03:29.:03:30.

A couple who've been married for more than 65 years

:03:31.:03:43.

are being forced to live ap`rt, because a council says one of them

:03:44.:03:46.

doesn't meet the criteria to be looked after in a care home.

:03:47.:03:50.

Ray Lorrison, who's 95, moved into Westoe Grange Care Home

:03:51.:03:53.

when his wife Jessie went into hospital.

:03:54.:03:56.

The 88-year-old had hoped to join her husband,

:03:57.:03:58.

but South Tyneside Council says she is well enough to look

:03:59.:04:01.

after herself at home with the assistance of carers.

:04:02.:04:03.

Jessie and Ray Lorrison in happier times.

:04:04.:04:11.

The couple have been inseparable since

:04:12.:04:13.

But ill-health saw the devoted couple separated after

:04:14.:04:17.

Mr Lorrison is 95 and has Alzheimer's.

:04:18.:04:25.

He was moved into a care hole with his wife

:04:26.:04:35.

-- He was moved into a care home when his wife

:04:36.:04:37.

had to go into hospital for several weeks.

:04:38.:04:39.

Jessie, aged 88, hoped to join him but South Tyneside Council said

:04:40.:04:42.

she did not meet the criterha for the care home and faces livhng alone

:04:43.:04:45.

for the first time ever at the age of 88.

:04:46.:04:48.

He misses her so much he is sitting, waiting

:04:49.:04:53.

Yes, she has got mental cap`city, absolutely, but physical,

:04:54.:04:57.

She just cannot do anything for herself.

:04:58.:05:01.

She would just be a prisoner in that chair if we

:05:02.:05:04.

She spoke to Look North earlier this year about how

:05:05.:05:33.

she avoided the bombing of a lemonade factory

:05:34.:05:35.

Recently she stayed briefly at the care home with their husband

:05:36.:05:39.

Then she was told she would not be allowed

:05:40.:05:42.

back and would instead recehve visits from carers at home.

:05:43.:05:45.

The couple's family have started a petition, calling

:05:46.:05:47.

for the pair to be allowed to continue living together.

:05:48.:05:49.

They have been split up right at the time

:05:50.:05:51.

spend whatever time they have got left, to spend together.

:05:52.:05:55.

This is not right, it is inhumane to do this to somebody.

:05:56.:05:59.

We can't understand how anyone could be

:06:00.:06:01.

This could happen to anybodx's parents or grandparents.

:06:02.:06:04.

In a statement the council said they would not

:06:05.:06:06.

comment specifically on

:06:07.:06:07.

the Lorrison's case but that they tried to make

:06:08.:06:09.

got to live independent lives in their own homes.

:06:10.:06:12.

The couple's family are sayhng they simply want Jessie

:06:13.:06:14.

and Ray to live together for the rest of their lives.

:06:15.:06:31.

Now, for generations it's t`ken a battering from the elements.

:06:32.:06:33.

And Lindisfarne Castle is showing the strain.

:06:34.:06:38.

Windows and walls are taking in water, so the castle's jtst

:06:39.:06:41.

As our News Correspondent Mark Denten reports -

:06:42.:06:45.

At Lindisfarne Castle today they try to move

:06:46.:06:57.

a fragile galleon model, among many other things,

:06:58.:07:00.

because the castle is closing for renovations until 2018.

:07:01.:07:05.

It's been battered by the elements for generations.

:07:06.:07:07.

Windows are leaking and walls peeling.

:07:08.:07:12.

The salts on the walls in the moisture are

:07:13.:07:14.

crystallising, breaking off paint, breaking off plaster,

:07:15.:07:16.

all this is coming down and shattering down.

:07:17.:07:21.

The cracks are being caused by the blistering and

:07:22.:07:23.

this is what we are looking to tackle, what we need to sort out if

:07:24.:07:27.

bit of work done here in about 570 it set her back about ?1,000.

:07:28.:07:34.

This time, the renovations will cost around ?3 million.

:07:35.:07:37.

But before they can even st`rt, 900 objects must be

:07:38.:07:39.

moved from here carefully, very carefully indeed.

:07:40.:07:46.

The National Trust can't just call on a mate with a van.

:07:47.:07:49.

We have a week planned for the move itself.

:07:50.:07:51.

best tides and we hope we get good weather

:07:52.:07:56.

and we will have a week for

:07:57.:07:57.

the move and hopefully that will be OK.

:07:58.:07:59.

John is one of the many voltnteers helping the move go smoothlx.

:08:00.:08:06.

It is the history and handling items hundreds

:08:07.:08:08.

In case you were wondering they have got the galleon

:08:09.:08:20.

boxed safely and if all goes to plan the North East landmark shotld

:08:21.:08:23.

be open again for visitors in March 2018.

:08:24.:08:31.

you are and in? It depends on if you are in the least or the West. Low

:08:32.:08:47.

temperatures around and seasonal averages mean eastern areas are

:08:48.:08:53.

above average and western areas are below average but above average

:08:54.:08:57.

sunshine. A mixed bag for October. In the first week of Novembdr

:08:58.:09:01.

tomorrow, there is a weekend which in store has a generally drx week

:09:02.:09:07.

but a bit cooler and a risk of overnight frost and fog. We are

:09:08.:09:14.

watching out for rain. It is edging from the north. Fairly patchy but

:09:15.:09:18.

misty and damp for many. More rain edging South by the end of the

:09:19.:09:22.

night. Temperatures dropping to five or six Celsius in the North. The

:09:23.:09:27.

northerly breeze will clear any remnants of rain and the cloud,

:09:28.:09:31.

giving us a fine, dry and l`stly sunny day. Despite the sunshine it

:09:32.:09:35.

will not be worn. Temperatures are some degrees down, because of the

:09:36.:09:41.

northerly breeze, typically up to 10 Celsius, Eddie Fahrenheit. Tomorrow

:09:42.:09:45.

and into the night it doesn't stay dry. Very little cloud. When you get

:09:46.:09:51.

shelter from the breeze, a touch of frost is certainly possible, we can

:09:52.:09:55.

see the blue haze on the map. Down to three or four Celsius but cold

:09:56.:09:58.

enough in the countryside for a touch of frost, Wednesday morning.

:09:59.:10:04.

Wednesday itself after a cold start, fine and dry, not a lot of cloud

:10:05.:10:08.

around and maybe the risk of the odd shower clipping the East Co`st.

:10:09.:10:11.

Otherwise a dry picture on Wednesday. Temperatures just

:10:12.:10:17.

scraping up to 10 Celsius at best. High pressure in the middle of the

:10:18.:10:21.

week but that will not last very long. This is up to the north of the

:10:22.:10:26.

UK and it is shunting this out of the way, bringing more cloud and a

:10:27.:10:29.

bit of rain heading into Thtrsday and Friday. As we headed to the

:10:30.:10:35.

weekend it will pick up the cold northerly wind. Thursday, gdnerally

:10:36.:10:39.

speaking, more cloud, espechally in western areas. Patchy rain `t times

:10:40.:10:43.

and breezy in the north-east, as well. Just about scraping into

:10:44.:10:47.

double figures. By Friday if anything it is cooler still with a

:10:48.:10:50.

fair amount of cloud around and still the risk of the odd shower now

:10:51.:10:55.

and again. Temperatures stick at roundabout nine Celsius on Friday

:10:56.:10:59.

afternoon. It also weekend, I will leave you with the summary for the

:11:00.:11:01.

north-east and Cumbria side. Strong northerly winds, some

:11:02.:11:06.

sunshine and also some rain

:11:07.:11:07.
