Conservatives have been celebrating their win in Copeland

:00:12.:00:14.

after snatching the seat from Labour, who've

:00:15.:00:16.

Yesterday's by-election came about after the surprise

:00:17.:00:19.

Theresa May was among the first to travel to Cumbria to congratulate

:00:20.:00:23.

Copeland was the focus of lots of media attention today.

:00:24.:00:36.

Not so long ago, the headlines here would have been

:00:37.:00:39.

In this area's change from Red to Blue is a remarkable reality.

:00:40.:00:44.

I'm absolutely delighted to be able to be here with the new member

:00:45.:00:47.

of Parliament for Copeland, Trudy Harrison.

:00:48.:00:48.

This is an astounding victory for the Conservative Party,

:00:49.:01:03.

Campaigners fought on many issues here, but these two

:01:04.:01:11.

were perhaps the most divisive - the protection of services

:01:12.:01:14.

at the West Cumberland Hospital, and the future of nuclear power

:01:15.:01:17.

For many voters, Jeremy Corbyn's previous views

:01:18.:01:23.

The Corbyn factor was a reason for defeat.

:01:24.:01:27.

But those in his campaign team say that's not the case.

:01:28.:01:30.

Jeremy Corbyn's been the leader of the Labour Party

:01:31.:01:33.

And Jeremy didn't certainly, as far as I was concerned,

:01:34.:01:38.

Jeremy didn't crop up on the doorstep.

:01:39.:01:42.

Whether it's the leader's stance, or disaffection

:01:43.:01:46.

with the Labour Party as a whole, the appetite for change was made

:01:47.:01:49.

The challenge for Trudy Harrison is to meet the electorate's

:01:50.:01:53.

I'm really looking forward to getting on with the job.

:01:54.:02:01.

I'm very much looking forward to going down to London on Monday

:02:02.:02:04.

and making sure that we deliver on the plan that I've been pledging

:02:05.:02:07.

More than 1,000 people have been demonstrating in Morpeth

:02:08.:02:23.

about plans for a retail park and hundreds of new homes,

:02:24.:02:25.

on the site of the current Northumberland County

:02:26.:02:27.

Labour councillors insist the redevelopment will

:02:28.:02:30.

But protestors say it'll destroy the town's historic character.

:02:31.:02:33.

Here's our political correspondent, Luke Walton.

:02:34.:02:42.

They've long had Northumberland County Council on their doorstep.

:02:43.:02:45.

Today, the people of Morpeth came out in force to

:02:46.:02:47.

accuse that same local authority of threatening

:02:48.:02:49.

Their target - a multi-million pound scheme to redevelop

:02:50.:02:52.

The heart is being ripped out of Morpeth.

:02:53.:02:55.

All the shops will lose out if they put supermarkets.

:02:56.:03:02.

And my other big concern is putting a McDonald's opposite a school.

:03:03.:03:05.

We're on the verge of having 3,300 new houses built in this town.

:03:06.:03:22.

And the character of Morpeth as a market town will change

:03:23.:03:24.

These protesters say Morpeth's already had more than its fair

:03:25.:03:29.

share of development, with housing estates

:03:30.:03:31.

But Northumberland's Labour leadership see the proposals

:03:32.:03:33.

as part of a wider plan to boost regeneration.

:03:34.:03:36.

Northumberland Council wouldn't do an interview,

:03:37.:03:37.

application was active, but said all views would be

:03:38.:03:40.

It's previously argued that moving its HQ from Morpeth to a smaller,

:03:41.:03:44.

more efficient building in Ashington would save taxpayers' money

:03:45.:03:46.

Claims hotly contested by critics, who vowed to fight on.

:03:47.:03:50.

We'll take this to court, we'll fight it all the way.

:03:51.:03:52.

There's grounds why this should be refused.

:03:53.:03:54.

There's over 1,500 objections on the website against this.

:03:55.:04:09.

Over 1,000 people turned up today to show the strength of the feeling.

:04:10.:04:14.

With council elections also due in Northumberland this spring,

:04:15.:04:22.

this bitter planning dispute looks set to become a bruising

:04:23.:04:25.

An outbreak of avian flu has been found at a farm near Haltwhistle.

:04:26.:04:33.

Defra says a three kilometre protection zone has been

:04:34.:04:35.

The H5N8 virus was found in a flock of around 35 chickens.

:04:36.:04:44.

Plans to move consultant-led maternity services out

:04:45.:04:46.

of the West Cumberland hospital in Whitehaven were opposed by 85%

:04:47.:04:49.

of the people who responded to a public consultation.

:04:50.:04:51.

That's according to a report published today by Cumbria's

:04:52.:04:53.

NHS managers say recruitment problems mean a number of services,

:04:54.:04:58.

including maternity, would be better centralised,

:04:59.:05:06.

Pirelli's been given the go-ahead to expand its Carlisle factory,

:05:07.:05:15.

in a move the firm says will secure almost four thousand jobs.

:05:16.:05:18.

The tyre manufacturer is set to add a new extension to the plant,

:05:19.:05:21.

which will be used on tyres produced there to "cure" them -

:05:22.:05:24.

that's a process which gives the product its final shape.

:05:25.:05:32.

More than 100 teaching assistants held a protest outside

:05:33.:05:34.

They're concerned they'll face substantial pay cuts

:05:35.:05:37.

Plans to re-hire assistants on the new arrangement

:05:38.:05:40.

were suspended, following strike action in December,

:05:41.:05:42.

but Unions say the threat hasn't gone away.

:05:43.:05:47.

I'm going to be losing nearly 300 a month and I'm a single parent

:05:48.:05:51.

And they're actually cutting people who could

:05:52.:06:02.

Bradley Lowery, the boy from County Durham who's battling

:06:03.:06:12.

a rare form of cancer, has been invited to be a mascot once

:06:13.:06:15.

again when England play Lithuania in the World Cup qualifier

:06:16.:06:17.

The five-year-old football fan, who has neuroblastoma,

:06:18.:06:20.

has already been a mascot for his team Sunderland.

:06:21.:06:22.

Earlier this week, his family learned that he has

:06:23.:06:24.

That's it from me, now onto the weather.

:06:25.:06:33.

And it was actually quite pleasant out today, Jen,

:06:34.:06:36.

but I can't imagine that's going to last?

:06:37.:06:42.

We are in for a spell of wet and windy weather as we go through the

:06:43.:06:50.

weekend. The Met office has a yellow warning in force. Let's take a look

:06:51.:06:55.

at how that looks tomorrow morning. A very wet start across Cumbria.

:06:56.:07:01.

Heavy and persistent rain. Strong southwesterly winds blowing through

:07:02.:07:06.

much of the day. Part of the north-east will stay dry, but here,

:07:07.:07:11.

it will be quite cloudy. Temperatures around ten or 11

:07:12.:07:16.

Celsius. That's 52 Fahrenheit. A very wet day to come first, on

:07:17.:07:21.

Saturday. Beside the day off with plenty of brightness. Quite a mild

:07:22.:07:25.

start the day. Spells of sunshine, but the wind starts to pick up ahead

:07:26.:07:30.

of further rain pitching in. Some of that will be heavy and persistent.

:07:31.:07:32.

Here the few days it is that the stay miles.

:07:33.:07:34.

Outbreaks of rain at times particularly as we head into Monday.

:07:35.:07:43.

A much calmer day today after the nasty storm yesterday. Let's look at

:07:44.:07:49.

your pictures, tranquil from Hampshire, on the edge of the new

:07:50.:07:52.

Forest. Nice cumulus clouds from Hartlepool. Still a bit stormy, that

:07:53.:07:57.

sea. We are

:07:58.:07:59.
