Newcastle Council's denied claims it's running a campaign | :00:12. | :00:14.
against drivers after a single bus lane in the city brought in more | :00:15. | :00:18.
Over 60,000 drivers were caught by the camera | :00:19. | :00:23.
on John Dobson Street - raising ?5000 a day for the council. | :00:24. | :00:27.
But the council says it's not using motorists as a cash cow. | :00:28. | :00:31.
Here's our news correspondent Mark Denten. | :00:32. | :00:34.
As he drives around Newcastle, something annoys him. | :00:35. | :00:40.
Still no sign of any warning signs at all at the moment. | :00:41. | :00:48.
We're about to turn onto John Dobson street. | :00:49. | :00:51.
David was snapped by a bus lane camera on John | :00:52. | :00:53.
He has since won his money back on appeal but thousands of | :00:54. | :01:00.
other drivers have shelled out because this is | :01:01. | :01:02.
It is a record breaker, taking more fines in | :01:03. | :01:08.
It is just 70 yards long, but 62,975 fines were handed out | :01:09. | :01:16.
to drivers illegally using this bus lane between February | :01:17. | :01:20.
and October last year, making a total of over ?1.5 million, | :01:21. | :01:25.
It's part of a wider campaign throughout the city that seems to be | :01:26. | :01:32.
about making the city as unattractive as possible | :01:33. | :01:35.
The fact of the matter is, lots of people need to use their cars. | :01:36. | :01:42.
The rest of the road on John Dobson Street is open | :01:43. | :01:45.
to the general public but a tiny little bit at the bottom there, | :01:46. | :01:49.
which isn't an accident hotspot or congestion hot spot, | :01:50. | :01:53.
yet apparently they have decided to make this unavailable | :01:54. | :01:57.
The number of the people who were being caught in | :01:58. | :02:02.
The council should have immediately realised that there was | :02:03. | :02:06.
The did not react to the fact that many people, | :02:07. | :02:11.
being used to John Dobson Street, were being taken by surprise by this | :02:12. | :02:15.
bus lane and still find it very difficult to understand why | :02:16. | :02:19.
the council would think this is a sensible way of organising | :02:20. | :02:23.
the traffic in the centre of the city. | :02:24. | :02:26.
Of course, you can change your route to avoid the camera but | :02:27. | :02:29.
Somewhere on here I need to manage to carry out a three-point turn. | :02:30. | :02:39.
Bearing in mind, fortunately there was an empty space here, | :02:40. | :02:43.
I'm not sure I'm going to be able to do it in three points. | :02:44. | :02:50.
If I was in a wagon or a large van, I wouldn't be able to do | :02:51. | :03:03.
Well, a little earlier tonight Mark spoke to the council's | :03:04. | :03:09.
Director of Development, Tom Warburton. | :03:10. | :03:13.
It's not about fining people, it is about improving | :03:14. | :03:15.
65% of people who come into the city centre come in by bus. | :03:16. | :03:25.
Most of those come up John Dobson Street. | :03:26. | :03:27.
You have been accused of running a campaign to make | :03:28. | :03:30.
this city as unattractive as possible to motorists. | :03:31. | :03:35.
We want drivers to come into Newcastle. Why should they if you | :03:36. | :03:41.
find them? They do not get fined if we obey | :03:42. | :03:48.
the rules of the road. Tell me one thing you're | :03:49. | :03:51.
going to use that for? We have not made our mind up | :03:52. | :03:54.
yet but we will spend It might be an improving public | :03:55. | :03:57.
realm areas for the whole It would be a delight for me | :03:58. | :04:03.
if nobody drove through that. Even when in it is bringing | :04:04. | :04:08.
you in over a ?1 million? Is this a badge of pride | :04:09. | :04:11.
to make so much money? Do you go to parties and say, | :04:12. | :04:18.
look at us, we have got We had a spike when we first | :04:19. | :04:21.
introduced the gate, When the BBC asked for the freedom | :04:22. | :04:26.

lengthy delays on the A1. A murder investigation's under way | :04:57. | :04:59.
tonight after the body of a man was found in a wheelie bin | :05:00. | :05:02.
in a Tyneside back alley. The body was discovered | :05:03. | :05:04.
in Northbourne Street, and has now been identified | :05:05. | :05:06.
as 23-year-old Craig Police say Mr Eade's family have | :05:07. | :05:08.
been informed and specialist One man's been arrested | :05:09. | :05:11.
in connection with the killing, but Police are still appealing | :05:12. | :05:16.
for any witnesses to come forward. Durham Police have been judged | :05:17. | :05:20.
the top performing police force in the country, | :05:21. | :05:23.
for the third year running. 43 forces in England | :05:24. | :05:25.
and Wales were assessed by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of | :05:26. | :05:28.
Constabulary. Durham Police was deemed | :05:29. | :05:31.
outstanding at preventing crime All the region's other forces | :05:32. | :05:34.
were given an overall good rating. A man from North Yorkshire has | :05:35. | :05:41.
become only the fourth person in the world to survive a pioneering | :05:42. | :05:44.
multiple organ transplant. Adam Alderson, from | :05:45. | :05:48.
Preston-under-Scar near Leyburn, underwent a 17-hour operation | :05:49. | :05:51.
to replace several organs, at the same time as having | :05:52. | :05:55.
a huge tumour removed. He's now recovered and is planning | :05:56. | :05:58.
a wedding and a fundraising trip At his worst, Adam was told nothing | :05:59. | :06:02.
more could be done and he was sent But he was determined not | :06:03. | :06:10.
to die at the age of 36. He'd heard about pioneering surgery | :06:11. | :06:14.
carried out on the England rugby league plater Steve Prescott Steve | :06:15. | :06:17.
sadly died just three weeks later The same operation was | :06:18. | :06:20.
the last chance for Adam. I didn't really know how long | :06:21. | :06:25.
I would have left to live. It was a difficult question to ask | :06:26. | :06:29.
but it was as little Refusing to give up, | :06:30. | :06:33.
stubborn Yorkshireman I am, I turned to the Internet | :06:34. | :06:41.
and I followed a guy, Steve Prescott, former | :06:42. | :06:45.
England rugby player, rugby league, who had the same | :06:46. | :06:50.
disease as me and one of four people in the world to have gone | :06:51. | :06:53.
through this and done very well. The 17-hour operation meant 30 | :06:54. | :06:58.
people working shifts and the removal of Adam's stomach, | :06:59. | :07:01.
large and small bowel, gall bladder, pancreas, appendix, | :07:02. | :07:04.
abdominal wall and spleen. He is forever grateful to the donor | :07:05. | :07:09.
who gave him another chance at life. The reality of this is sadly | :07:10. | :07:13.
somebody has died for me to survive. That is easy to forget and we must | :07:14. | :07:20.
thank people that do this selfless I'm now back to work full time, | :07:21. | :07:26.
eating and drinking as normal, having a really good social life | :07:27. | :07:32.
and living life and enjoying life. That's all thanks to | :07:33. | :07:38.
the medical team that believed Obviously, my partner, my fiancee, | :07:39. | :07:41.
Laura, we're getting married in May this year, | :07:42. | :07:48.
I could not have done She's been with me at | :07:49. | :07:52.
every step of the way. Now Adam's taking on a gruelling | :07:53. | :07:59.
transcontinental rally to raise money for the Steve Prescott | :08:00. | :08:03.
Foundation and It's a 15,000-mile trek | :08:04. | :08:04.
through Europe and into Asia in this 15-year-old Suzuki that's seen | :08:05. | :08:10.
better days but we are There is massive risks | :08:11. | :08:15.
involved with this. If I get into any medical | :08:16. | :08:19.
trouble in the middle of the Gobi Desert in Mongolia, | :08:20. | :08:22.
we could be in trouble. And after all his challenges so far, | :08:23. | :08:26.
Adam will be embarking on his next 11 towns and cities, | :08:27. | :08:29.
including Sunderland, have now put their names forward | :08:30. | :08:44.
to become UK City Joining Sunderland on the list | :08:45. | :08:47.

in July, and the winning The Heritage Lottery Fund | :08:53. | :08:57.

Fab Flournoy was presented to Prince William to be made an MBE | :09:07. | :09:09.
for his services to basketball. The 43-year-old American is the most | :09:10. | :09:14.
successful coach in the history of the domestic game, | :09:15. | :09:18.
with the club having picked up 24 national titles in the 13 years | :09:19. | :09:22.
he's been in charge. Great to see, he certainly looked | :09:23. | :09:32.
chuffed. Time for a look at the weather now, | :09:33. | :09:34.
and with all the details, After a fairly decent they were in | :09:35. | :09:44.
for a cloudy day tomorrow with some outbreaks of rain as we head into | :09:45. | :09:49.
Friday afternoon. This is how things look tonight, if you outbreaks of | :09:50. | :09:55.
rain across parts of Cumbria and Northumberland, we could see a touch | :09:56. | :09:59.
of snow on high-grade but generally a dry night. Temperatures will drop | :10:00. | :10:06.
down to three Celsius, we could see frost in spots and the wind will die | :10:07. | :10:12.
down. Friday morning, we still have that rain across northern part that | :10:13. | :10:17.
generally a dry start, thoroughly cloudy with a few breaks so expect | :10:18. | :10:22.
some sunny spells but on Friday afternoon this rain pushes in from | :10:23. | :10:27.
the south, temperatures could get up to 10 Celsius. That rain spreads to | :10:28. | :10:35.
all parts on Friday night and by Saturday morning, still with us for | :10:36. | :10:38.
a time but lots of clothes on Saturday, the rain will come and go | :10:39. | :10:43.
through the morning and by Saturday afternoon that rain a little heavier | :10:44. | :10:46.
and more persistent, temperatures up to seven or eight degrees. Looking | :10:47. | :10:53.
further ahead into the weekend, Sunday looks like the better day, or | :10:54. | :10:58.
cloud and that will be drier, temperatures are around seven or 8 | :10:59. | :11:02.
degrees and we keep the generally unsettled | :11:03. | :11:03. |
