A North East offshore worker has been exposed to radiation | :00:13. | :00:16.
while working on an oil rig in the North Sea. | :00:17. | :00:18.
Steve Innes, from Sunderland, was working on the giant | :00:19. | :00:22.
He was told the job, didn't require extra protection. | :00:23. | :00:28.
But he's now been told he was contaminated | :00:29. | :00:29.
It's unclear how his health might be affected. | :00:30. | :00:33.
Our Business Correspondent, Ian Reeve, reports. | :00:34. | :00:39.
Steve has worked offshore for 30 years. | :00:40. | :00:42.
But late last year he was exposed to radioactive materials | :00:43. | :00:46.
during a shutdown on an oil and gas rig in the North Sea. | :00:47. | :00:53.
It was, he says, a massive failing on behalf of the company | :00:54. | :00:56.
he was working for, as well as the owner of the rig. | :00:57. | :00:58.
Something that shouldn't have happened. | :00:59. | :01:06.
HSE came down when we were working down on one of them and they told us | :01:07. | :01:10.
they had done a reading the night before and it was off | :01:11. | :01:13.
the map so then they did a reading on the one | :01:14. | :01:19.
we were on and that was off the map so the work stopped. | :01:20. | :01:22.
The company that Steve was working for - the Wood Group on the Thistle | :01:23. | :01:26.
platform in the North Sea - says the health and safety | :01:27. | :01:28.
All six workers involved in the incident were | :01:29. | :01:32.
They believed they were working in a safe environment. | :01:33. | :01:38.
No one would expect that to happen and obviously you would expect | :01:39. | :01:43.
safeguards the burdens of that couldn't happen and people | :01:44. | :01:45.
Once everyone was aware it had happened, they were taken to a room, | :01:46. | :01:56.
there was a professor brought in who explained the dangers, | :01:57. | :01:59.
I think it was the radiation they were exposed to, | :02:00. | :02:02.
the long-term effects could be cancer or leukaemia | :02:03. | :02:04.
and they would have to get regular blood checks and that this | :02:05. | :02:09.
Steve can't claim for personal injury until there's proof | :02:10. | :02:14.
that his health has suffered because of the incident. | :02:15. | :02:17.
But he does want the issue to be taken more seriously | :02:18. | :02:19.
than he feels it has been, given the effect on him | :02:20. | :02:22.
Some of the lads, some of them can't go to work, | :02:23. | :02:29.
on medication, can't sleep, worried about it, he has been sent | :02:30. | :02:32.
Waiting for results coming back like we all are. | :02:33. | :02:39.
And we are just hoping that somebody will step forward and take a hold | :02:40. | :02:42.
of the situation and start doing the right thing, you know? | :02:43. | :02:50.
Rather than trying to sweep it under the table and under the carpet. | :02:51. | :02:59.
Four months ago Colin Flannery was at home in Whitley Bay | :03:00. | :03:02.
on North Tyneside when his heart suddenly stopped. | :03:03. | :03:04.
Today he met the paramedics who helped to save him. | :03:05. | :03:13.
But first on the scene was his neighbour, Colin tells his story. | :03:14. | :03:17.
I was sitting in the front lounge on my iPad. | :03:18. | :03:22.
Next thing Gail knew my iPad had dropped to the floor. | :03:23. | :03:25.
She looked over and I was slumped in the lounge. | :03:26. | :03:27.
I was just calling his name and he didn't come round, | :03:28. | :03:31.
so I phoned the services straightaway and they told me | :03:32. | :03:35.
to get him on his back and try and start resuscitating him. | :03:36. | :03:41.
I think because it was my own, I was in a panic, and I rang to get | :03:42. | :03:46.
The worst-case scenario was unfolding. | :03:47. | :03:51.
He didn't look well at all, so it was just a case of getting air | :03:52. | :03:55.
Seemed like minutes, probably was, but I carried on and all of a sudden | :03:56. | :04:02.
Colin just gave this huge gasp and I thought, "Well, | :04:03. | :04:12.
Derek did a fantastic job and it made not have had the outcome had it | :04:13. | :04:37.
not been for Derek's actions and being so quick delivering CPR. | :04:38. | :04:42.
I would encourage anyone who knows CPR, if you ever have | :04:43. | :04:45.
I feel so grateful that the paramedics have saved my life | :04:46. | :04:53.
and also my neighbour, who initially started | :04:54. | :04:55.
Sunday is Mother's Day - a lovely day for many, | :04:56. | :05:00.
but if your Mum has died recently, it can be really tough. | :05:01. | :05:03.
Tynedale Hospice at Home in Northumberland has been working | :05:04. | :05:05.
with children who've suffered that loss. | :05:06. | :05:07.
To help explain the work the charity does, the children made a film. | :05:08. | :05:15.
This film is made by young people who go to Rainbow Club | :05:16. | :05:18.
My favourite memory of mum is when we went | :05:19. | :05:37.
to Disneyland Florida and rode on dolphins. | :05:38. | :05:38.
I remember roller-skating for her and slipping over | :05:39. | :05:52.
We are all unique, so different things have helped us | :05:53. | :06:08.
That's all from the late team, enjoy your weekend - | :06:09. | :06:23.
Don t forget the clocks spring forward an hour tomororw night.. | :06:24. | :06:29.
Let's get weekend weather prospects now with with Jen Bartram. | :06:30. | :06:38.
A lovely weekend of weather but clear skies mean there will be a | :06:39. | :06:46.
chill start to Saturday morning, temperatures overnight dropping down | :06:47. | :06:51.
to freezing or above. Mist and fog developing as well. A cold start but | :06:52. | :06:56.
it will not last long, the mist and fog lifts and then a story of a | :06:57. | :07:01.
lovely blue skies, light winds tomorrow and temperatures up to a | :07:02. | :07:10.
high of 14 or 15 Celsius. As we head into Sunday, another fairly decent | :07:11. | :07:16.
day, a chilly start but we will see sunshine coming through. Turning | :07:17. | :07:20.
Haysie in the afternoon, some cloud rolling in from the east and it will | :07:21. | :07:26.
feel cooler. Temperatures in double figures. This is the outlook. | :07:27. | :07:30.
weather outlook for the whole of the UK. | :07:31. | :07:34.
Good evening. It is good news on the weather front for most of the UK. We | :07:35. | :07:45.
have been forecasting fine weather for a few days. It has certainly | :07:46. | :07:50.
arrived. Beautiful picture today. The skies are clearing across the | :07:51. | :07:54.
UK. Temperatures are falling as well. Pretty nippy. Already a frost | :07:55. | :08:00.
developing in northern areas as this high establish its hotels across the | :08:01. | :08:04.
UK. It is the windlass zone in the centre of the high where those | :08:05. | :08:09.
temperatures dropping. Some fog in places, such as the Vale of York. | :08:10. | :08:14.
For most, a starry, starry night. Towns and cities | :08:15. | :08:15. |
