But tonight Colin Gregg, whose family set up the Newcastle | :00:13. | :00:17.
bakery chain Greggs, is starting a 13 and a half year | :00:18. | :00:21.
prison term for a string of sex attacks on boys. | :00:22. | :00:25.
Today, a Judge told the former headteacher, he'd hidden behind | :00:26. | :00:27.
a cloak of respectability, and showed not a pang | :00:28. | :00:30.
Peter Harris was at Newcastle Crown Court for the sentencing. | :00:31. | :00:37.
He had left court when he was found guilty showing no remorse. | :00:38. | :00:41.
Today, Colin Gregg was back to be sentenced. | :00:42. | :00:43.
He evaded the waiting cameras but he could not evade justice. | :00:44. | :00:48.
Some of Colin Gregg's victims were in court. | :00:49. | :00:52.
The judge said Gregg had led a life of wealth. | :00:53. | :00:55.
He had been a teacher and a head teacher but he had used that cloak | :00:56. | :00:59.
of respectability to hide behind in order to abuse boys. | :01:00. | :01:02.
He said he had shown no remorse and not a pang of conscience. | :01:03. | :01:06.
In fact, he had shown nothing but contempt for the boys | :01:07. | :01:12.
when he abused them and now as men when they had made | :01:13. | :01:14.
The court heard from one of those victims. | :01:15. | :01:18.
He said, "I hope I never hear the name Colin Gregg again. | :01:19. | :01:21.
"I feel saddened but mostly angered that Gregg has been unable | :01:22. | :01:24.
"I hope he will reflect on this in prison." | :01:25. | :01:29.
And prison is quite a fall from grace. | :01:30. | :01:32.
Once he had rubbed shoulders with Prince Andrew when he was | :01:33. | :01:35.
administrator of the yellow Brick Road fund set up to better | :01:36. | :01:38.
His status from the 1960s onwards was an aggravating feature. | :01:39. | :01:43.
It had been the cover for abusing boys down the decades. | :01:44. | :01:48.
One boy said he had such respect for Colin Gregg he could not take | :01:49. | :01:51.
in what had happened, and as an 11-year-old | :01:52. | :01:53.
Tonight, Colin Gregg is starting 13-and-a-half years in jail | :01:54. | :02:00.
He will be in his 80s when he comes out of prison and will be | :02:01. | :02:07.
a registered sex offender for the rest of his days. | :02:08. | :02:11.
I think one of the most striking things from today's court case | :02:12. | :02:15.
was Colin Gregg's reaction - there wasn't a flicker of emotion | :02:16. | :02:22.
and there certainly does not appear to be any remorse of any kind. | :02:23. | :02:26.
Outside court the police were telling us this case shows | :02:27. | :02:29.
it is never too late for victims of abuse to come forward. | :02:30. | :02:31.
They were saying, partly off the back the Jimmy Savile | :02:32. | :02:36.
investigations, there has been a large increase in reports | :02:37. | :02:39.
of historic abuse and this case shows, with the defendant getting | :02:40. | :02:42.
more than 13 years in prison, there is always time to come forward | :02:43. | :02:46.
The police have been praised today for the thoroughness of that | :02:47. | :02:53.
investigation because it is worth bearing in mind it has | :02:54. | :02:55.
taken around 20 years, through various court cases, | :02:56. | :02:57.
Well, tonight he starts the 13 and a half year prison sentence, | :02:58. | :03:05.
condemned, in the words of the judge, as a sophisticated | :03:06. | :03:08.
Peter Harris, BBC Look North, Newcastle Crown Court. | :03:09. | :03:16.
A North Yorkshire care home's been fined ?50,000 | :03:17. | :03:20.
after one of its residents killed herself by jumping | :03:21. | :03:22.
Dora Strickland, who was 90, took her own life at the Red Lodge | :03:23. | :03:26.
The owners, the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust, | :03:27. | :03:35.
were found guilty of failing to adequately assess | :03:36. | :03:37.
This trial at York Crown Court has lasted almost two weeks. | :03:38. | :03:41.
During that time, we have heard how Dora Strickland had failed | :03:42. | :03:44.
a care home on the outskirts of York. | :03:45. | :03:47.
Just weeks before she died after jumping from a second-floor | :03:48. | :03:51.
window, she had told staff at the home she was depressed | :03:52. | :03:56.
While the owners of the home, the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust, | :03:57. | :04:06.
were acquitted of putting residents' lives at risk, they were today fined | :04:07. | :04:09.
?50,000 for failing to adequately assess the risks that residents | :04:10. | :04:11.
Since 2011, we have implemented a robust risk assessment relating | :04:12. | :04:19.
to windows in our care homes, and will learn any lessons from this | :04:20. | :04:22.
case to ensure we put residents and their safety and well-being | :04:23. | :04:26.
We want to reassure our residents and families in all our care homes | :04:27. | :04:35.
they are safe and will continue to receive high-quality care. | :04:36. | :04:39.
As well as fining the trust ?50,000, the judge also ordered them | :04:40. | :04:42.
Mrs Strickland's family meanwhile have welcomed that | :04:43. | :04:51.
lessons have been learned, and believe that if things had | :04:52. | :04:54.
been done differently, their mother's suicide | :04:55. | :04:55.
It was a request for a sidecar by a dad who wanted | :04:56. | :05:02.
to take his dying son out for one last ride. | :05:03. | :05:07.
Mark Hartley's son, Jamie, has been given just months to live. | :05:08. | :05:13.
Sharon Barbour's been to meet the family in Blyth to hear | :05:14. | :05:16.
how their request for a little help went viral - and now more | :05:17. | :05:19.
than a thousand bikers are expected at Blyth Beach this weekend. | :05:20. | :05:23.
When Jamie Hartley had a massive seizure last month, | :05:24. | :05:31.
his family were told he may now only have months to live. | :05:32. | :05:33.
Instead of having a year-and-a-half left with my son in order to plan | :05:34. | :05:38.
trips and fun times, then all of a sudden it | :05:39. | :05:41.
Um, and to try and make it the best couple of months | :05:42. | :05:48.
You're on camera, you can show off now. | :05:49. | :05:57.
Jamie has always loved motorbikes and his dad wanted them | :05:58. | :06:04.
I put out to 30 members, my friends, that's all it was, | :06:05. | :06:14.
asking them if anybody could lend me a sidecar just so we could do a last | :06:15. | :06:18.
The idea was just me, a couple of friends and a sidecar. | :06:19. | :06:25.
But the post went viral and before I knew it there was thousands | :06:26. | :06:28.
and thousands of hits and ended up being several hundred thousand hits. | :06:29. | :06:32.
Jamie and his brother were both diagnosed with Juvenile Huntington's | :06:33. | :06:34.
His brother Kyle now lives in a care home. | :06:35. | :06:42.
But Jamie could die any day, and the bike ride is about creating | :06:43. | :06:47.
It's amazing that these people all came out to help. | :06:48. | :06:55.
The family hopes the event to mark Jamie's last ride at Blyth Beach | :06:56. | :07:00.
A Scottish businessman, who's hoping to run Middlesbrough's | :07:01. | :07:13.
?30 million Snow Centre, says it'll transform the town, | :07:14. | :07:15.
create hundreds of jobs and bring millions of pounds into the area. | :07:16. | :07:18.
Jamie Smith already runs two big snow and ice centres in Scotland. | :07:19. | :07:21.
Councillors will decide on the plans for Middlehaven tomorrow. | :07:22. | :07:23.
Stuart Whincup's been to meet the man supporting one of Teesside's | :07:24. | :07:26.
This is one of Europe's most successful Snow Centres. | :07:27. | :07:44.
Now, the man behind it has big plans for Teesside. | :07:45. | :07:46.
In terms of pulling in 350 jobs, I think they will make those | :07:47. | :07:50.
If anything, I think their estimates are conservative. | :07:51. | :07:56.
Jamie Smith runs Snow Factory in Braehead, he also runs | :07:57. | :07:59.
the world's largest indoor ice climbing venue. | :08:00. | :08:02.
He is now hoping to become the operator | :08:03. | :08:06.
For generations, this land was used for shipbuilding on the Clyde. | :08:07. | :08:10.
But this site was transformed and the Snow Centre now brings | :08:11. | :08:13.
in thousands of visitors to the area every week. | :08:14. | :08:16.
It can shine a spotlight on the area. | :08:17. | :08:20.
People can spend half their day at the snow centre, then spend time | :08:21. | :08:23.
within Renfrewshire contributing to the local economy. | :08:24. | :08:26.
This is how Middlesbrough's Snow Centre would look. | :08:27. | :08:31.
Now we can show you what would be inside. | :08:32. | :08:34.
At 168 metres, this main slope is around the same size as the one | :08:35. | :08:39.
There will be an ice bar, an ice climbing wall like this one. | :08:40. | :08:44.
Around the ski slopes there will be bars and cafes. | :08:45. | :08:49.
Few here believed a ?30 million Snow Centre would ever be built | :08:50. | :08:54.
There is always going to be naysayers and doubters. | :08:55. | :09:00.
But they have done their homework, the site is fantastic, | :09:01. | :09:02.
and you have got a really affluent population very close | :09:03. | :09:05.
Plans for Middlesbrough's own ?30 million Snow Centre | :09:06. | :09:24.
are expected to be approved by councillors tomorrow. | :09:25. | :09:26.
Stuart Whincup, BBC Look North, in Braehead. | :09:27. | :09:30.
-- that is it from me. We have plenty of variety and the weather | :09:31. | :09:45.
today. More rain to come overnight and Cumbria bears the brunt of the | :09:46. | :09:51.
heaviest and some persistent rain along the borders. Further south in | :09:52. | :09:55.
this dryer with clearer spells. A very mild night. Tomorrow we start | :09:56. | :10:05.
off on the cloudy side and some rain, especially in the West through | :10:06. | :10:10.
the morning. By lunchtime it is becoming drier and the afternoon | :10:11. | :10:15.
looks more promising with cloud more broken and the sun coming out for | :10:16. | :10:20.
most places was just the odd afternoon shower. Not as warm as it | :10:21. | :10:26.
has been but still a reasonable five for tomorrow although that | :10:27. | :10:28.
south-westerly wind will be quite strong. -- reasonable hive. For the | :10:29. | :10:37.
weekend low-pressure is in charge. April showers arrived right on cue | :10:38. | :10:41.
and that ridge of high pressure builds to the second half of the | :10:42. | :10:46.
weekend to bring some quieter and drier weather. Saturday a day of | :10:47. | :10:51.
sunshine and showers, some heavy and perhaps the odd rumble of thunder | :10:52. | :10:56.
but blue skies and sunshine in between. A cold mate on Saturday and | :10:57. | :10:58.
leaving as a fine and time of year. The chance of a shower | :10:59. | :11:00.
on Saturday. Sunday will be dry. Hello, it will cool off over the | :11:01. | :11:13.
next few days but that's not unusual, given how warm it was | :11:14. | :11:18.
today. This was London. We just had the warmest March day since 2012, 20 | :11:19. | :11:22.
two Celsius in the Sunnis skies in the south-east. It was much warmer | :11:23. | :11:27.
than recently in north-eastern Scotland, but in between we had a | :11:28. | :11:31.
zone of outbreaks of rain. It's pretty wet in south-west Scotland | :11:32. | :11:33.
and North West England at the moment. This was the scene earlier, | :11:34. | :11:39.
with rainy skies. There's more rain to come overnight. We could see a | :11:40. | :11:42.
few splashes running eastwards into England, but most of the wet weather | :11:43. | :11:47.
is further west. We will see heavy rain arriving in Northern Ireland. | :11:48. | :11:50.
Further training north-west England and also for Scotland. -- further | :11:51. | :11:54.
rain. It will stay very mild for the | :11:55. | :11:55. |
