An inquest into the deaths of three men at a care home | :00:12. | :00:16.
in North Yorkshire has heard that one of those who died was emaciated | :00:17. | :00:19.
Albert Pooley died last year at Sowerby House - | :00:20. | :00:24.
a care home in Thirsk that's been at the centre of recent controversy. | :00:25. | :00:31.
At today's inquest, his wife said prior to his death - | :00:32. | :00:34.
she'd raised concerns with staff about his care. | :00:35. | :00:36.
Test the inquest heard complaints that she had raised concerns about | :00:37. | :00:50.
the levels of care that he'd been receiving. She was seen arriving at | :00:51. | :00:57.
the inquest this morning and said she feared he was not being fed | :00:58. | :01:00.
properly and not being given enough to drink. She had concerns about him | :01:01. | :01:08.
being bathed and showered. We've also heard evidence from a nurse who | :01:09. | :01:13.
did one shift here at the home in April of last year. She described | :01:14. | :01:18.
how the residents had been left sitting in your grin and one was | :01:19. | :01:22.
left having his breakfast with hundreds of ants covering the table. | :01:23. | :01:29.
She spoke to me outside. I was horrified, trying to address the | :01:30. | :01:32.
problems of that others could deal with it. I spoke to the nurse that I | :01:33. | :01:36.
was working alongside. I spoke to the manager but nothing was getting | :01:37. | :01:43.
done about these incidents. The home has been the focus of controversial | :01:44. | :01:52.
headlines. The death of one resident sparked an investigation whilst last | :01:53. | :01:55.
year, the quality of care was strongly criticised. Since then, the | :01:56. | :02:02.
owners of the home same mistakes have been corrected and a new | :02:03. | :02:06.
management team has been put in place. Acted a's EnQuest we heard | :02:07. | :02:12.
from JoAnn King, the foreign manager, as she admitted there were | :02:13. | :02:15.
deficiencies in record-keeping because staff did not recognise the | :02:16. | :02:24.
importance. She was asked, did you have proper control? She said, I | :02:25. | :02:26.
think I tried my very best. A man's been jailed after pointing | :02:27. | :02:31.
a fake gun at a young family in a road rage incident | :02:32. | :02:34.
on the A1 in Gateshead. 38 year old Craig Mafhan was driving | :02:35. | :02:37.
on the Western Bypass last September He pulled alongside the other | :02:38. | :02:40.
driver, whose two children were in the car, and pointed | :02:41. | :02:45.
what looked like a handgun at him. He was jailed for 27 months | :02:46. | :02:49.
after pleading guilty to possession of an imitation firearm with intent | :02:50. | :02:55.
to cause fear. An investigation is under way | :02:56. | :02:58.
after claims a workman was seen with a can of beer | :02:59. | :03:00.
at a demolition site hours He was in the site office | :03:01. | :03:03.
of the Odeon demolition on Pilgrim Street in Newcastle | :03:04. | :03:07.
on Tuesday morning. Part of the building | :03:08. | :03:10.
and scaffolding collapsed Crime has increased | :03:11. | :03:13.
and their repeated complaints That's what some people living | :03:14. | :03:20.
near two care homes for vulnerable They say the police have been called | :03:21. | :03:24.
200 times in nine months. Stockton Council opened the homes | :03:25. | :03:30.
so children didn't have to be sent And it says the majority of police | :03:31. | :03:33.
calls have nothing to do with crime. In packed public meetings, | :03:34. | :03:43.
some claimed the homes would bring crime, vandalism and anti-social | :03:44. | :03:46.
behaviour to their quiet villages. Now those same people say | :03:47. | :03:51.
they've been proved right. They say the police have recived 119 | :03:52. | :03:54.
calls about this care home We are hearing about general | :03:55. | :04:11.
vandalism, assaults in the home. How can you be sure it came from the | :04:12. | :04:18.
home? You reported to the police. You don't get that sort of activity | :04:19. | :04:22.
if there is no issues. Before it was opened we had one community police | :04:23. | :04:27.
officer. They actually cycled to the village. That is how much there was. | :04:28. | :04:36.
People living near the care homes see they received 200 calls about | :04:37. | :04:42.
incidents. The figures showed a majority going missing but there | :04:43. | :04:46.
were 19 incidents of violence. And 23 reported incidents | :04:47. | :04:50.
of criminal damage, nuisance We are anxious that the residents | :04:51. | :05:02.
have a quiet life. The new manager starts next week and we want to work | :05:03. | :05:08.
alongside him and the existing staff to achieve the best possible | :05:09. | :05:08.
outcomes. The homes were set up | :05:09. | :05:10.
so vulnerable children would no longer have to be moved to other | :05:11. | :05:12.
parts of the country, The aim was to give them | :05:13. | :05:15.
a better start in life. Nobody from Stockton council would | :05:16. | :05:26.
talk on camera but in a statement they said the homes were rated good | :05:27. | :05:32.
and well run but it is not uncommon for police to be called because | :05:33. | :05:36.
staff must follow strict guidelines. They must call the police every time | :05:37. | :05:41.
a child or young person does not come home one time and they say that | :05:42. | :05:43.
is the reason for these lease call-outs. The council says these | :05:44. | :05:50.
are not bad children and should not be demonised but what they need is | :05:51. | :05:51.
support from local people. The Workington Lifeboat team have | :05:52. | :06:05.
taken delivery of a new, The Shannon class boat is called | :06:06. | :06:07.
the Dorothy May White - after the woman who left a million | :06:08. | :06:11.
pounds to the RNLI in her will. Mark McAlindon joined | :06:12. | :06:14.
the fanfare for her arrival. Flat out at 25 knots, | :06:15. | :06:18.
the Dorothy May White is a speedier successor to the John Fisher she has | :06:19. | :06:21.
come to replace in Workington. She's more deft too, | :06:22. | :06:28.
and at a cost of ?2.1m, It is like going from a Ford Cortina | :06:29. | :06:44.
to a Ferrari. Everything is controlled with electronics, it has | :06:45. | :06:51.
jets instead of propellers. The current lifeboat does 16 knots. This | :06:52. | :06:57.
is a tough business, saving lives at sea. It shows how brave these guys | :06:58. | :07:06.
are that when they head out to sea, this environment can be quite | :07:07. | :07:14.
forbidding. This is one example. 30 miles to safety. | :07:15. | :07:21.
The new boat will mean getting to incidents much quicker. | :07:22. | :07:25.
Technology has moved on. This is at the edge of cutting-edge technology. | :07:26. | :07:36.
This boat's capabilities at sea, it is wonderful. It will serve us for | :07:37. | :07:40.
many years to come. But there is no statutory | :07:41. | :07:43.
support for these brave The late Dorothy May left | :07:44. | :07:45.
a million to the RNLI, while a trust stumped up ?500,000 | :07:46. | :07:50.
for this new vessel. We've had some very generous | :07:51. | :08:01.
bequests and the support from the local community has been absolutely | :08:02. | :08:05.
phenomenal. We've been really grateful for everybody's help and it | :08:06. | :08:08.
looks as though we will be there very shortly. I'm very happy indeed | :08:09. | :08:09.
about it. The John Fisher will now go | :08:10. | :08:11.
into some form of retirement - while Dorothy May White will be | :08:12. | :08:14.
keeping the shores Rare Roman artefacts are being put | :08:15. | :08:16.
on display at museums along the length of Hadrian's Wall as part | :08:17. | :08:23.
of an exhibition which launches This Ribchester-style Helmet, | :08:24. | :08:26.
which was delivered to Newcastle's Hancock Museum today, | :08:27. | :08:30.
is on loan from the British Museum. Other artefacts which celebrate | :08:31. | :08:37.
the role of the Roman Cavalry will be on show at Museums | :08:38. | :08:42.
from Maryport to South Shields Football now - and there were big | :08:43. | :08:44.
games tonight at the top of the Championship and bottom | :08:45. | :08:49.
of the Premier League. But Match of the Day is on just | :08:50. | :08:51.
after this bulletin - so if you don't want to know | :08:52. | :08:54.
the scores you know what to do. Hull City came from behind to earn | :08:55. | :08:57.
a crucial victory against relegation The 4-2 result leaves | :08:58. | :09:00.
Boro 19th in the table. Meanwhile, Newcastle | :09:01. | :09:09.
overhauled Brighton at the top of the Championship with a 1-0 | :09:10. | :09:12.
victory against Burton, which a controversial refereeing | :09:13. | :09:15.
decision threatened to overshadow. That's all the news | :09:16. | :09:17.
and sport from me tonight. Time for the weather | :09:18. | :09:19.
now with Paul Mooney. Mostly dry sums up the weather in | :09:20. | :09:35.
the past few days. A mixture of cloudy areas and clear skies. It is | :09:36. | :09:40.
and pieces of code will come and go. It will hold this up. No lower than | :09:41. | :09:48.
six or seven in the countryside, a couple of degrees colder. It is | :09:49. | :09:54.
bright in eastern areas, some of that will fill in. The best of any | :09:55. | :10:03.
sunny spells lingering across parts of Northumberland. Tomorrow, that is | :10:04. | :10:12.
mid-50s. Similar to the sort of figures we had. This area of high | :10:13. | :10:19.
pressure dominating. It stays with us as we head towards the weekend. | :10:20. | :10:26.
There is a change in wind direction from the north-westerly to more of a | :10:27. | :10:29.
south-westerly or even a southerly as we head into the weekend. That | :10:30. | :10:35.
will bring a few subtle changes. For Friday it is mostly dry but cloudy. | :10:36. | :10:40.
The temperatures will make 12 or 13 Celsius and the wind will drift in | :10:41. | :10:47.
from that westerly direction. We will see the cloud become more | :10:48. | :10:50.
broken. In southern areas we will see blue skies and sunshine. The | :10:51. | :10:54.
temperature will start to claims that by Sunday afternoon, 18 Celsius | :10:55. | :11:00.
is possible. That is the way it is looking. | :11:01. | :11:01.
or 15. It is sunny towards the weekend and we could see the low 20s | :11:02. | :11:04.
by Sunday. Here | :11:05. | :11:06. |
