A North East MP says authorities had three chances to avoid

:00:00.:00:16.

A number of relatives across the region have

:00:17.:00:22.

discovered their loved ones' organs and tissues were stored

:00:23.:00:25.

at South Tyneside Hospital for years without their knowledge.

:00:26.:00:29.

But South Shields MP Emma Lewell Buck says three national

:00:30.:00:32.

tissue audits over 20 years accidentally missed South Tyneside.

:00:33.:00:35.

Here's our News Correspondent Mark Denten.

:00:36.:00:39.

November, 1995 - a young man, Justin Smith, has been found

:00:40.:00:42.

murdered close to the Gateshead side of the Tyne Bridge.

:00:43.:00:46.

When he grew up, he was just a normal teenager.

:00:47.:00:52.

No goody two-shoes by no means, you know.

:00:53.:00:56.

He enjoyed a can of lager and that type of thing,

:00:57.:00:59.

But he was a kind-hearted boy, you know.

:01:00.:01:04.

Although a man was convicted of Justin's murder, his mother Trudy

:01:05.:01:08.

is now going to the tragedy all over again.

:01:09.:01:10.

She found out six weeks ago that Justin's brain and windpipe

:01:11.:01:13.

were removed and kept at South Tyneside Hospital.

:01:14.:01:15.

It's latest case to emerge from an audit of missing body tissue.

:01:16.:01:21.

I just think the lies that we have been told are horrendous and I just

:01:22.:01:26.

want now justice for my son and also for people to be aware

:01:27.:01:33.

There's still got to be families out there that haven't even been told.

:01:34.:01:39.

The South Shields MP says she's been told by senior managers

:01:40.:01:46.

at South Tyneside Hospital that three previous national tissue

:01:47.:01:50.

and organ audits have been carried out and did not include

:01:51.:01:53.

There was any original inspection nationally after Alder Hey.

:01:54.:02:01.

There was another inspection nationally in 2006 when the Human

:02:02.:02:06.

And I understand there was another national audit in 2012,

:02:07.:02:12.

and it was in 2014, under a routine Home Office inspection,

:02:13.:02:15.

These national audits missed out South Tyneside Hospital every time.

:02:16.:02:21.

Northumberland police say that this is a live

:02:22.:02:25.

investigation with enquiries still very much active.

:02:26.:02:31.

No one at South Tyneside Hospital has been available for comment,

:02:32.:02:36.

but in a statement issued tonight, the Home Office said it wasn't made

:02:37.:02:39.

aware until 2014 that samples were being held at the hospital

:02:40.:02:43.

It then assisted the hospital to contact the police to discuss

:02:44.:02:49.

Approval has been granted on a development which would see

:02:50.:02:54.

Stockton Council borrowing ?17 million to build a hotel.

:02:55.:02:58.

The new Hampton by Hilton Hotel would be close

:02:59.:03:00.

The company will run it and pay the council back from any profits.

:03:01.:03:05.

Built on a scrappy car-park, the council believes the hotel

:03:06.:03:14.

And it's part of wider plans to regenerate the town centre.

:03:15.:03:19.

But critics point to the empty Swallow Hotel,

:03:20.:03:22.

They say it's become a physical symbol of failure and one

:03:23.:03:26.

It's a massive amount of money and it's going to take us 35

:03:27.:03:34.

If it was a really good deal, if it was a sound business case,

:03:35.:03:39.

I'm sure that a business would be running along to do it.

:03:40.:03:42.

We would have a queue of them if it was a huge opportunity.

:03:43.:03:45.

But actually, I think this is a risk.

:03:46.:03:47.

It's a risk with a pot of money that pays for schools,

:03:48.:03:50.

it pays for the care for our elderly.

:03:51.:03:52.

I think councillors shouldn't be risking public money.

:03:53.:03:53.

Stockton Council says it's delighted a world-renowned company

:03:54.:03:56.

It says industry experts say there is a real shortage

:03:57.:04:01.

of hotels in the area, so it is needed.

:04:02.:04:03.

I understand people's concerns, but this money is not coming

:04:04.:04:10.

It's not coming out of the money that we spend

:04:11.:04:15.

We can only spend it on projects like this.

:04:16.:04:21.

But as the profits come through from this hotel,

:04:22.:04:23.

which they will do, we believe they will do, that money

:04:24.:04:26.

The deal with Hilton Hotel will, it says, make the council ?250,000

:04:27.:04:30.

Building work will start here on site in the summer

:04:31.:04:37.

and the hotel is due to open by the end of 2018.

:04:38.:04:41.

It says the Hilton would have to be one of the worst performing hotels

:04:42.:04:47.

in Teesside to not make a profit out of the deal.

:04:48.:04:50.

A man's been sent to prison for causing the death by dangerous

:04:51.:05:00.

Brandon Morris was a passenger in a Ford Focus which crashed

:05:01.:05:05.

while being followed by police in Middlesbrough last month.

:05:06.:05:07.

29-year-old Lee Harvey was sentenced to seven

:05:08.:05:09.

A former priest has been jailed for 17 years

:05:10.:05:14.

of sexually abusing a pupil at a Catholic boarding

:05:15.:05:19.

Father Michael Higginbottom, who's 74 and from West Farm Road

:05:20.:05:23.

in Newcastle, denied subjecting a teenage boy to repeated

:05:24.:05:26.

sexual abuse while he was a teacher in Lancashire.

:05:27.:05:32.

Now, it's a decision traders say is damaging their business.

:05:33.:05:35.

Richmond in North Yorkshire has a two-hour limit on free

:05:36.:05:38.

After that, drivers must move or risk being fined.

:05:39.:05:43.

Now, businesses are calling on the county council

:05:44.:05:46.

It's an historic town that bosts independent

:05:47.:05:54.

But Heather Jones, who owns a dress shop

:05:55.:06:02.

in Richmond, believes two hours is too short.

:06:03.:06:04.

A time limit which she says is deterring shoppers.

:06:05.:06:08.

They want time to look and, suddenly, they're

:06:09.:06:11.

looking at their watches again and saying, "Oh, I'm really sorry,

:06:12.:06:13.

So, I've got dresses left out and I've lost a sale.

:06:14.:06:18.

And independent businesses cannot afford to lose sales.

:06:19.:06:20.

Like in many towns and cities, parking here has

:06:21.:06:23.

There's not many places, though, that still

:06:24.:06:27.

But does that limit what people can and can't do?

:06:28.:06:33.

There are a lot of lovely things here to see, but if

:06:34.:06:36.

you've only got two hours, I don't think it really gives us

:06:37.:06:39.

Especially visitors, you know, when the signs aren't clear.

:06:40.:06:45.

I've spoken to a lot that have come out for the

:06:46.:06:47.

day and had the day spoiled, really, by getting a ticket.

:06:48.:06:50.

In a statement, North Yorkshire County Council said the two-hour

:06:51.:06:52.

limit accommodates general requirements,

:06:53.:06:53.

while generating a sufficient turnover of spaces.

:06:54.:06:57.

Those wanting to make extended stays can park in

:06:58.:07:00.

This town centre tattoo parlour says it's

:07:01.:07:04.

We've spent a good couple of hours setting them at ease, going through

:07:05.:07:09.

designs, and then they're off to their car, to move their car.

:07:10.:07:12.

They are going to the big urban castles of the retail

:07:13.:07:16.

For the record, to film our story took an hour and 52 minutes.

:07:17.:07:23.

With no time for shopping, though, or a trip to the castle.

:07:24.:07:26.

Phil Connell, BBC Look North, Richmond.

:07:27.:07:32.

Earlier this week, we introduced you to Bandit here - a ferret.

:07:33.:07:35.

He was walking Hadrian's Wall to help raise money for research

:07:36.:07:38.

The mum of Bandit's owner, Charlie Hammerton, died

:07:39.:07:43.

This was Charlie's way of dealing with the loss and helping others.

:07:44.:07:49.

Mark McAlindon joined Charlie as he made it to the end

:07:50.:07:52.

The last few days have been Bandit's big adventure.

:07:53.:08:01.

The fundraising ferret walking the width of the

:08:02.:08:05.

My idea was to do this as a way of grieving.

:08:06.:08:10.

I wanted to get out in the countryside, get out

:08:11.:08:12.

with my mate Bandit, my ferret, and just enjoy myself.

:08:13.:08:16.

And I feel, well, why not do this as a fundraiser as well?

:08:17.:08:19.

To help me through the grieving process.

:08:20.:08:21.

So, that's kind of the way I look at it - this is me

:08:22.:08:24.

Charlie Hammerton lost his mum to motor

:08:25.:08:31.

neurone disease just a fortnight ago.

:08:32.:08:33.

His hike across Hadrian's Wall has touched hearts.

:08:34.:08:35.

It's remarkable to see people coming out of their

:08:36.:08:38.

houses and shops to wave me on and wish me luck

:08:39.:08:43.

It's been great seeing Bandit getting so many fans along the way.

:08:44.:08:49.

The big skies and fresh winds of spring

:08:50.:08:55.

have helped Charlie deal with his grief,

:08:56.:08:57.

Alone on the open road, before finally

:08:58.:09:03.

making it to the end in the Bowness on Solway.

:09:04.:09:05.

We've completed everything that we wanted to do in a great time.

:09:06.:09:14.

I've been on track every single day and

:09:15.:09:15.

we've raised a lot of money as well, so it's been more than worth it.

:09:16.:09:20.

Mark McAlindon, BBC Look North on the Solway Firth.

:09:21.:09:27.

Good evening, there was a lot of cloud around today and there's

:09:28.:09:37.

a lot of cloud around overnight, that cloud thick enough for some

:09:38.:09:40.

In fact, the rain might become more widespread in the west

:09:41.:09:44.

Not as cold as last night, though, with a lot more cloud

:09:45.:09:48.

and that westerly breeze, temperatures no lower than about

:09:49.:09:50.

It's a damp cloudy start from many tomorrow.

:09:51.:09:55.

The rain will always be more intermittent in eastern areas,

:09:56.:09:57.

more widespread further west and, eventually, later in the day,

:09:58.:10:00.

we will start to see some dryer, brighter weather get into northern

:10:01.:10:05.

areas, but that'll be a slow improvement late in the day.

:10:06.:10:09.

Temperatures will struggle up to 12, perhaps 13 Celsius in one

:10:10.:10:12.

or two spots, and again, a bit of a brisk

:10:13.:10:15.

As we had through the Easter weekend, we keep the situation

:10:16.:10:20.

with high pressure down to the south-west and low pressure

:10:21.:10:24.

to the north-east keeping that north-westerly airflow.

:10:25.:10:26.

A few weather fronts to the east coming round the high-pressure

:10:27.:10:29.

as well, thickening up the cloud from time to time.

:10:30.:10:31.

So, for Saturday, it looks as if we're in one of the phases

:10:32.:10:35.

There will be some blue sky for many of us,

:10:36.:10:40.

Temperatures only just into double figures though,

:10:41.:10:43.

add in that north-westerly wind, which will be quite

:10:44.:10:46.

strong and at times, it will feel quite cool.

:10:47.:10:48.

Easter Sunday we're back into the cloudier skies

:10:49.:10:51.

with outbreaks of rain, again, temperatures only just

:10:52.:10:55.

I'll leave you with the summary for tomorrow - -

:10:56.:11:01.

We will keep you updated. Now with the National Outlook, Tomasz

:11:02.:11:10.

Schafernaker. Good

:11:11.:11:11.
