Welcome to Wednesday's Look North. On the programme tonight: | :00:03. | :00:05.
Yorkshire escapes rioting again but there have been outbreaks of | :00:05. | :00:10.
violence in Leeds and Huddersfield. Drinkers trapped in a social club | :00:10. | :00:20.
fear for their lives as a gang of youths ransacked the building. | :00:20. | :00:25.
This could absolutely just finish us off. We were just getting back | :00:25. | :00:29.
on our feet. Whoever you are, thank you very, very much. | :00:29. | :00:33.
Professional sheep rustlers target Yorkshire farms. | :00:33. | :00:36.
And from Gotham to Sheffield - the caped crusader swoops into the | :00:36. | :00:46.
:00:46. | :00:46. | ||
city's arena for Batman Live. And join me for the weather. It has | :00:46. | :00:52.
been rather wet, with rain at times. Warmer sunshine tomorrow. A full | :00:52. | :01:02.
:01:02. | :01:06. | ||
Hello and welcome to the programme. Yorkshire has again avoided the | :01:06. | :01:10.
riots affecting many parts of England but in the last 24 hours | :01:10. | :01:14.
the disorder here has become much more serious. | :01:14. | :01:19.
Later we will report from a working men's club in Huddersfield way used | :01:19. | :01:26.
try to force their way in. A woman was also at attacked by a gang with | :01:26. | :01:32.
iron bars in Leeds. Here is what has happened to the | :01:32. | :01:37.
last 24 hours. Drinkers were trapped in a club in Huddersfield, | :01:37. | :01:45.
an ASDA was a tax. And in Leeds Amos was vandalised. There were no | :01:45. | :01:50.
disturbances in the North Yorkshire or South Yorkshire. The police have | :01:50. | :01:53.
praised community mediators for helping to avoid more copycat | :01:53. | :02:03.
:02:03. | :02:06. | ||
A man set on fire in Harehills, one incident in a night her sporadic | :02:06. | :02:16.
:02:16. | :02:17. | ||
trouble in Leeds. -- a banner. This woman at's car was attacked while | :02:17. | :02:25.
she set off for home in York. cannot remember what I was thinking. | :02:25. | :02:31.
On my friend told me to put my foot down and drive. A second group came | :02:31. | :02:38.
out but when they saw the pick up speed they it went away. | :02:38. | :02:45.
She was a victim as an outrageous of a plot by thugs here. She says | :02:45. | :02:51.
of they were moving road close to signs to persuade drivers to go | :02:51. | :02:57.
into sight streets to attack them. I have no doubts that they were | :02:57. | :03:01.
children and kits. Before I could register what was happening, I | :03:01. | :03:05.
thought it was drunk kits on a Tuesday night. There is no doubt in | :03:05. | :03:12.
my mind that they were not adults. Meanwhile, in Chapeltown, a gang | :03:12. | :03:18.
attacked cars and a mosque. This car was pushed, driverless, through | :03:18. | :03:23.
a wall towards a house. They took off the handbrake and | :03:23. | :03:30.
moved its through this wall here. They were 16 or 17 years old. | :03:30. | :03:37.
how many were there? About 10. It was very frightening. I was really | :03:37. | :03:43.
shaking. I went to bed hoping nothing would happen. A few yards | :03:43. | :03:48.
down the road where the mosque and education centre where attacks, 100 | :03:48. | :03:56.
people were in sight at the time at prayer. I came out and there were | :03:56. | :03:59.
about 30 youths with bricks. They were throwing them through the | :03:59. | :04:03.
windows. They took the front windows out and then went around | :04:03. | :04:09.
the back. The hall was full of glass and massive bricks. | :04:09. | :04:15.
They need to start this and finish with it all. It will get worse. We | :04:15. | :04:21.
need to work to get out of these things. It is not right. | :04:21. | :04:24.
The tonight so disturbances in Chapeltown in Leeds were sparked by | :04:24. | :04:30.
the shooting of a 34 year-old man in the street. He remains | :04:30. | :04:34.
critically ill. Reactionary violence has been it contained by | :04:34. | :04:40.
police but it is leaving its mark on the streets of Leeds. | :04:40. | :04:44.
Some years just in after that report. West Yorkshire say they | :04:44. | :04:48.
have arrested two men aged 20 and 25 in connection with the shooting | :04:48. | :04:54.
of Gavin Clarke in Chapeltown on Monday evening. | :04:54. | :04:58.
In a few weeks' time it is the Leeds West Indian Carnival and it | :04:58. | :05:03.
has been all hands on deck preparing for the big events. Last | :05:03. | :05:08.
night, the people preparing to make it a huge spectacle, became | :05:09. | :05:14.
attacked the two. Volunteers have had to spend the day cleaning up at | :05:14. | :05:20.
their site in Chapeltown. Anna, what are we know? | :05:20. | :05:24.
This still saying is very much a known for being a building open so | :05:24. | :05:28.
the whole community hearing Chapeltown. You can see it looks | :05:28. | :05:33.
very different this evening. Bricks were thrown through the windows and | :05:33. | :05:39.
it was set alight. The first thing you notice when you walk through | :05:39. | :05:45.
the door is the overwhelming smell of smoke. Through here you can see | :05:45. | :05:49.
that the cleaners have done a fantastic job. The volunteers have | :05:49. | :05:53.
really cleaned up but they cannot clean up the smoke damage on the | :05:53. | :05:59.
walls and windows. A lot of the work made for the West Indian | :05:59. | :06:09.
Carnival, particularly the costumes, have survived. Just a little - here. | :06:09. | :06:17.
-- are just a little Asha on this comps junior. | :06:17. | :06:23.
I got a call at 1:30am to say that the carnival building was on fire. | :06:23. | :06:31.
I felt sick at and sad. I cannot understand why anyone would to it. | :06:31. | :06:38.
When I came down and walked through the door, I wanted to cry. It was | :06:38. | :06:43.
quite serious. There is a great deal of passion and work that goes | :06:43. | :06:47.
into the carnival. A lot of people have held with the | :06:47. | :06:52.
clean-up, haven't they? Yes, or so many people came to the | :06:52. | :07:02.
:07:02. | :07:03. | ||
door this morning. Over 20 people, all volunteers from the community. | :07:03. | :07:07.
The city council have also been very supportive and sent some | :07:07. | :07:12.
council workers to help us. Some council cleaners came in with | :07:12. | :07:18.
councillors cleaning up. You would never believe the transformation to | :07:18. | :07:23.
this place. Fantastic. The Leeds West Indian | :07:23. | :07:28.
carnival is less than three weeks away. Preparations are continuing | :07:28. | :07:34.
for that fantastic events, which brings the people of Leeds together. | :07:34. | :07:38.
Following the trouble last night, six people have been arrested. A | :07:38. | :07:43.
teenage girl in Wakefield has been arrested for trying to incite a | :07:43. | :07:49.
riot on face but. The others arrested were from Huddersfield. | :07:49. | :07:54.
Oct 30 youths surrounded a social club in the Sheepridge Beria of | :07:54. | :08:04.
Huddersfield. -- of up to 30 youths. I do not understand why anyone | :08:04. | :08:11.
would do this. We have put a lot of work and effort into making his | :08:11. | :08:14.
place was in tears. This could finish us off. | :08:14. | :08:20.
This woman helps to run the social club in Sheepridge. It is run by | :08:20. | :08:25.
the community and paid for by the community. Last night, the club and | :08:25. | :08:31.
the community came under siege. 30 youths barricaded the club outside | :08:32. | :08:40.
with a wheelie bins. The club members inside were terrified. | :08:40. | :08:45.
This morning they returned to see what had become of their club. | :08:45. | :08:55.
:08:55. | :08:55. | ||
my God! We did not know what was happening at first. It just blew up. | :08:55. | :09:04.
This is what you are left with. It is just stupid. Absolutely stupid. | :09:04. | :09:09.
Everyone was moving as far away as possible, out of the way of the | :09:09. | :09:12.
glass. This man was playing in a pool | :09:12. | :09:16.
tournament upstairs when the attacks started. He said it | :09:16. | :09:20.
continued for half-an-hour. We were under siege. We were | :09:20. | :09:27.
trapped. We thought they might torch the place. | :09:27. | :09:31.
They threw that through the window, probably lit, hoping the place | :09:31. | :09:37.
would go on fire. During the day, more people came back to take stock | :09:37. | :09:42.
of what had happened and what might have been. The clean-up started | :09:42. | :09:46.
with a heavy heart. The greatest fear is that the damage was done by | :09:46. | :09:51.
people from within the local community. Young people who might | :09:51. | :09:54.
have used the club in the past but to last night's went about | :09:54. | :10:04.
:10:04. | :10:07. | ||
destroying it. -- but last night went about destroying it. | :10:07. | :10:11.
What is the answer to calming tensions for the West Yorkshire | :10:11. | :10:16.
Chief Constable? It is a visible community policing. | :10:16. | :10:20.
West Yorkshire police believe the hallmark of their policing in | :10:20. | :10:24.
communities is the work they do one-on-one with local people. The | :10:24. | :10:28.
Chief Constable visited one place in Leeds this afternoon and paid | :10:28. | :10:33.
respects to the people who helped in Chapeltown only last night. | :10:33. | :10:40.
have dealt with the first signs was up -- the first signs robustly. I | :10:40. | :10:44.
would like to praise the Community mediators. They presented | :10:44. | :10:48.
themselves and we have an ongoing relationship with them. They had | :10:48. | :10:53.
been working as hard as we have in getting young people who might want | :10:53. | :10:59.
to contract -- who might want to copy these events to go home. | :10:59. | :11:03.
But there is real fear and the cuts to police resources make people | :11:03. | :11:08.
read. The bases of neighbourhood policing | :11:08. | :11:11.
is that people living in the community, working with local | :11:11. | :11:18.
officers, should not at that level feel the difference. It matters so | :11:18. | :11:24.
much that people are reassured and to not feel, particularly against | :11:24. | :11:29.
the context of what is happening at the moment, they do not fear | :11:29. | :11:34.
Absolut lawlessness. See you feel confident the you have | :11:34. | :11:38.
the resources to deal with what might happen in the next 24 hours | :11:38. | :11:42.
and in the future? We have fewer staff than we did | :11:42. | :11:48.
have last year. The cuts do have to be making the first two years. But | :11:48. | :11:52.
every person who leaves the organisation does create another | :11:52. | :11:58.
challenge for me and my management changes in how we use our officers | :11:58. | :12:04.
more flexibly. -- and my management team. | :12:04. | :12:08.
Neighbourhood policing is the Chief Constable Paul smite blueprint. But | :12:08. | :12:13.
there is affected last night, though, it is a fast response that | :12:13. | :12:23.
:12:23. | :12:26. | ||
Young gymnasts from Leeds jet off to China to represent Britain in | :12:26. | :12:33.
the World Student Games. Some news is coming into us about a | :12:33. | :12:36.
rescue operation under way in North Yorkshire, to free eight teenagers | :12:36. | :12:40.
and three adults. They have been trapped in a cave, but we | :12:40. | :12:45.
understand that the incident at Ingleton north of Settle is coming | :12:45. | :12:49.
to a conclusion and that the 11 people are as we speak walking out | :12:49. | :12:54.
of the cave to safety. A Yorkshire surgeon who was found | :12:54. | :12:57.
guilty of dishonestly and this conduct has been sacked by | :12:57. | :13:01.
Scarborough Hospital. Nayef El- Barghouty was suspended for a year | :13:02. | :13:06.
by the General Medical Council last month, after he botched a series of | :13:06. | :13:10.
operations leading to the death of a patient and then lied about it. | :13:10. | :13:13.
He had worked at a hostel for 15 years. | :13:13. | :13:17.
Police have arrested a 21-year-old man in connection with a shooting | :13:17. | :13:21.
in the Park Hill area of Sheffield yesterday. A 46-year-old man was | :13:21. | :13:26.
taken to hospital after being found with gunshot wounds to his leg. His | :13:26. | :13:30.
condition is not life-threatening. Police believe it was a targeted | :13:30. | :13:34.
attack, and they are trying to market other people connected with | :13:34. | :13:38.
the incident. Test samples reveal high-level of | :13:38. | :13:43.
toxins in a lake where three dogs died suddenly. The water at Burton | :13:43. | :13:46.
Riggs reserve near Scarborough tested positive for blue-green | :13:47. | :13:51.
algae which can kill cattle and other animals if eaten. The | :13:51. | :13:54.
Yorkshire Wildlife Trust is warning people to stay out of the water and | :13:54. | :13:58.
keep their dogs away. If you live in Sheffield or | :13:58. | :14:03.
Chesterfield, you must have noticed that you have now joined the | :14:03. | :14:07.
digital switchover. The BBC Two analogue signal was switched off at | :14:07. | :14:12.
midnight last night. Viewers with Freeview will need to retune their | :14:12. | :14:15.
TV's to get all BBC channels, those without digital capabilities have | :14:15. | :14:20.
two weeks before the other channels are turned off. Scarborough was the | :14:20. | :14:26.
first place in Yorkshire to go digital last week. | :14:26. | :14:29.
If you are experienced problems, the website to go to his | :14:29. | :14:38.
digitaluk.co.uk, and the helpline number is 08456 505050. | :14:39. | :14:42.
Living in the country may seem endemic, but families and | :14:42. | :14:48.
businesses face their own problems. Role crime went up by 70% last year, | :14:48. | :14:51.
fuel and tractor thefts are the biggest problems, but life stock | :14:51. | :14:57.
theft is also becoming common. Danny Carpenter has been to see one | :14:57. | :15:02.
farmer near Pickering who has been the victim of sheep rustling twice. | :15:02. | :15:06.
It may be a bit like locking the stable door after the horse has | :15:06. | :15:10.
bolted, but Andrew Russell has to do something. He has been targeting | :15:10. | :15:15.
by gangs who have stolen his sheep - twice. It was very organised. | :15:15. | :15:20.
They knew what they had come for, and they knew how to get it. | :15:20. | :15:24.
wrestlers used dogs to round up the sheep, they had a lorry to take | :15:24. | :15:29.
them away, and some way of getting the meat illegally into the food | :15:29. | :15:33.
supply. It is very distressing. Even more so now when you think | :15:33. | :15:37.
about replacing them now when prices are nearly double what they | :15:37. | :15:44.
were at this time last year. Stealing livestock is on the rise - | :15:44. | :15:49.
a 17% increase in rural crime on last year. Insurers say they have | :15:49. | :15:54.
no doubt why it is happening. economy cannot help at the moment - | :15:54. | :16:00.
people are finding it difficult and those people in the industry have | :16:00. | :16:05.
taken other people's property are going to say, is this a target that | :16:05. | :16:10.
we could next go to? There are fine watch schemes, and police have | :16:11. | :16:15.
promised greater visibility, but it is the countryside. There are many | :16:15. | :16:23.
outbuildings, many more animals, and very few people. | :16:23. | :16:29.
Let us have a look at sport now. Paul is here with the cricket. | :16:29. | :16:33.
A good day for England and Yorkshire. How many times this | :16:33. | :16:39.
season have we had two good pieces of news. Yorkshire's Tim Bresnan | :16:39. | :16:44.
what one of England's he was today. On day one of the third Test | :16:44. | :16:47.
between England and India at Edgbaston, Brize then removed | :16:48. | :16:56.
Gambhir, Dravid and Laxman. He finished with 4 for 60 to go off 20 | :16:56. | :17:01.
overs, he needed a bit of health from the fielders, but look at the | :17:01. | :17:06.
rigmarole they have got to get through to get a 4th wicket! It was | :17:06. | :17:15.
a video appeal. There is a few hand gestures. The cricketing term now | :17:15. | :17:24.
is a hot spot, and I was most impressed with what my grandma used | :17:24. | :17:31.
to call the Hand jive. I cannot remember those days! | :17:31. | :17:36.
Better news for Yorkshire is that they themselves have won their 48 | :17:36. | :17:39.
over match at Lord's against Middlesex. Yorkshire were put into | :17:39. | :17:49.
:17:49. | :17:50. | ||
bat, they lost skipper Andrew Gale, but Jack Rudolf and Jonny Bairstow | :17:50. | :17:56.
led a revolt. Yorkshire won by 22 runs. | :17:56. | :18:01.
Lots of football as well. Eight of our regions where in action last | :18:01. | :18:07.
night. For sheer passion, the Yorkshire derby at Elland Road | :18:07. | :18:13.
probably won the prize. This was a cup-tie. More than | :18:13. | :18:16.
17,000 at Elland Road watched Bradford City deliver the Yorkshire | :18:16. | :18:21.
pride their manager and 4,000 travelling fans demanded. Twice | :18:21. | :18:25.
City lead through Jack Compton and Michael Flynn, twice Leeds find | :18:25. | :18:32.
equalisers. Here, McCormack heads in 42-2. The one-time Leeds took | :18:33. | :18:38.
the lead on the night, they held on to it, and a 3-2 victory. A power | :18:38. | :18:46.
cut at Hartlepool meant a delayed start for Sheffield United. 1-1 | :18:46. | :18:52.
deadlock became extra time, and then penalties. It was nearly | :18:52. | :18:55.
10:30pm by the time the Blades were blasted through to round two. | :18:55. | :19:00.
Joining them will be Doncaster Rovers who coped well with without | :19:00. | :19:06.
Billy sharp, and cruised past Tranmere. Huddersfield Town 14-2 at | :19:06. | :19:10.
Port Vale, all goals coming from players who were already in situ | :19:11. | :19:20.
before the summer recruitment drive. Three disappointments included | :19:20. | :19:24.
Rotherham United score, who scored first thanks to an on goal from | :19:24. | :19:30.
Mills, but lost 4-1, and Barnsley, who still have not given their new | :19:30. | :19:34.
manager and role yet. Morecambe hit the headlines with their tooted nil | :19:34. | :19:43.
victory. Chesterfield's match at Rochdale went to extra time, Danny | :19:43. | :19:50.
Whitaker scored twice for the Spireites, but Rochdale went | :19:50. | :19:56.
through to the second round. Sorry Newquay not show all the | :19:56. | :20:00.
goals. Four City of Leeds gymnasts have | :20:00. | :20:05.
set off to China for the World Student Games. They all study at | :20:05. | :20:08.
Leeds Metropolitan University and if they do well, it could be a | :20:08. | :20:18.
:20:18. | :20:31. | ||
For gymnasts, one university, or heading to the biggest | :20:31. | :20:35.
Championships of their career. is my first time competing for | :20:35. | :20:43.
Great Britain. So it is a pretty big competition for me. Definitely | :20:43. | :20:48.
the biggest competition, a huge opportunity. Because we are | :20:48. | :20:52.
competing against the best people in the world. | :20:52. | :20:58.
It is definitely spurring them on to play together. | :20:58. | :21:03.
You can do different skills, and so it is easy to try and keep going | :21:03. | :21:07.
throughout. Ashley had featured on Look North | :21:07. | :21:11.
before, when he won the title at the Youth Olympics. Since then he | :21:11. | :21:18.
has had a knee injury. I have been out for a year and not training. So | :21:18. | :21:24.
I really have to gain that year back and some more. | :21:24. | :21:28.
He is though the closest of the four to making it to London 2012. | :21:28. | :21:35.
am up there with the top ten boys'. We all have to fight for that team. | :21:35. | :21:40.
I do sometimes let myself dream about it, and just do not want to | :21:40. | :21:49.
let myself get ahead of myself. is a specialist - stocky but strong, | :21:49. | :21:57.
he plays the Rings. It has got power and artistic side involved. | :21:57. | :22:02.
Rebecca's favourite is the beam. It is just four inches wide. How does | :22:02. | :22:08.
she do it? Years of practice doing repetitions of skills, just walking | :22:08. | :22:13.
along the been, to flexing their muscles. Just lots of repetitions | :22:13. | :22:19.
so you know whether been his. British gymnastics is on a high | :22:19. | :22:23.
right now - it will be tough for any of these for to make the | :22:23. | :22:27.
Olympic team, but a good showing in China will certainly help their | :22:27. | :22:32.
cause. We did see Harry Gration on his | :22:32. | :22:37.
mountain bike last night. It is only fair Christa Ackroyd has ago | :22:37. | :22:47.

on the buyers! -- on the buyers! I used to do that, actually. How | :22:52. | :22:58.
long before Jonny Bairstow gets a call? Another century - he has got | :22:58. | :23:03.
to be knocking on those doors. It does seem that we can do with a | :23:03. | :23:07.
super hero at the moment. In Sheffield they have just the man. | :23:07. | :23:12.
For the next five nights, Batman is swooping into the city's a rematch | :23:12. | :23:21.
in an eye-popping stage show. It is our very own boy wonder, to mingle. | :23:21. | :23:27.
--, Ingle. Holy Wednesday, Batman - look what | :23:27. | :23:32.
has pulled up at Sheffield Arena. Yes, straight from the mean streets | :23:32. | :23:36.
of Gaughan, commissionaire Gordon's favourite man in bullet-proof | :23:36. | :23:42.
rubber. This is the brand new stage show Batman Live, so who is the man | :23:42. | :23:50.
lucky enough to slip into the belt of fate? By a mob on that fighting | :23:50. | :23:58.
crime, so I do not get sleep. Sheffield is very peaceful, | :23:58. | :24:03.
thankfully. No, it is a really fantastic job and a lot of fun. | :24:03. | :24:11.
Physically very demanding. Met us Membrane up for the show, a cast of | :24:11. | :24:17.
skilled performers. This is a really big show, and it takes a lot | :24:17. | :24:21.
to keep it on the road. 24 pantechnicons and a crew of more | :24:21. | :24:28.
than 40. And yes, they do will stop for dinner. But it is not just the | :24:28. | :24:36.
technicians. A sidekick is still 50% of the hero. It is exciting | :24:36. | :24:41.
almost being like the little brother. Is that how he treats you? | :24:42. | :24:49.
Does Robin get an action sequence? Always. When I was a boy I had | :24:49. | :24:55.
about Mobile, and now I have got my own bat Mobile. It is living the | :24:55. | :25:00.
dream! This is one comic-book where the | :25:00. | :25:05.
action is in 3 D. When you see the signal in the sky, head to the | :25:05. | :25:14.
Arena for some adventure! You have got muscles like that | :25:14. | :25:24.

What an atrocious day for most of us. It stopped people going out | :25:25. | :25:29.
with the cameras, because I have no fault has to show you. But I can | :25:29. | :25:32.
show you the sunshine from yesterday. This was Ilkley | :25:32. | :25:39.

your Eigg. Finally, Whitby. Thanks for the photos, keep them coming. | :25:49. | :25:54.
Today has been unsettled. Tomorrow it will improve, still mostly | :25:54. | :26:01.
cloudy sky. The weather is set to stay unsettled. The satellite | :26:01. | :26:05.
feature shows all the cloud that brought the rain today. South | :26:05. | :26:10.
Yorkshire missed most of the rain this morning, but now they have | :26:10. | :26:16.
most of the heavy rain at the moment. Overnight, anywhere is at | :26:16. | :26:21.
risk of heavy rain. Most persistent I think over the Dales. A yellow | :26:21. | :26:26.
warning from the Met Office. The wind at least what he's done, it | :26:26. | :26:31.
has been gusting around a 40 mph this afternoon, but a very mild | :26:31. | :26:38.
night thanks to all the cloud, temperatures dropping to 15 degrees. | :26:38. | :26:44.
Looking at the Sun-Times, it rises tomorrow morning at 5:38am. Those | :26:44. | :26:52.
are the next high waters from would be down to Bridlington. -- Whitby. | :26:52. | :26:56.
Tomorrow, a cloudy start the day. There will be some heavy rain first | :26:56. | :27:01.

the day still at risk of catching a few showers, but not as persistent | :27:05. | :27:11.
as the rain we have seen today. A little but a bright mess for | :27:11. | :27:19.
particularly North Derbyshire, but not as much wind as today. It will | :27:19. | :27:24.
feel a little milder, the temperatures around about 20 | :27:24. | :27:29.
degrees. That is 68 in Fahrenheit. On Friday we should see an | :27:29. | :27:35. |
