Welcome to Monday's Look North. On the programme tonight: Tough times | :00:03. | :00:05.
at one of our most prestigious museums. | :00:05. | :00:07.
We've seen documents which show that visitor numbers at the Royal | :00:07. | :00:11.
Armouries have fallen by 38% in just a year. | :00:11. | :00:14.
We'll hear from the Armouries and find out how our other national | :00:14. | :00:17.
museums are doing. Also tonight: The supermarket | :00:17. | :00:22.
funding university education here in Yorkshire. | :00:22. | :00:24.
Morrisons is paying for 1,000 students at Bradford University to | :00:24. | :00:29.
try to find its managers of the future. | :00:29. | :00:32.
And a familiar face on our TV screens brings Susan Penhaligan's | :00:32. | :00:41.
talents to the Leeds stage. We have seen sunshine and showers | :00:41. | :00:46.
today, some rain to come to Meara but it will lead least stay mild. | :00:46. | :00:56.
:00:56. | :00:57. | ||
The fall for -- the full forecast later in the programme. | :00:57. | :01:01.
I can remember the excitement when it opened, the Royal Armouries | :01:01. | :01:06.
Museum in Leeds was the innovative showcase for the military heritage. | :01:06. | :01:12.
Battles, weapons, live jousting. Not any more. 16 years on and | :01:12. | :01:17.
visitor numbers are plummeting, nearly 40 % down compared with the | :01:17. | :01:21.
same period last year. There is no admission charge and with three | :01:21. | :01:27.
other national museums like that as well, the national media Museum saw | :01:27. | :01:32.
a drop of 10 %. It was similar at the National Coal Mining Museum | :01:32. | :01:39.
near Wakefield where it fell by 12 %. Better a museum news for the | :01:39. | :01:43.
National Railway Museum in York where it attracted 4% more people | :01:43. | :01:48.
than the same period last year. In a moment, we will be talking to the | :01:48. | :01:53.
experts about why this is happening, but first, we look at why the | :01:53. | :01:58.
broiler Armouries has suffered so badly. | :01:58. | :02:03.
-- the Royal Armouries. Bringing history to live, the | :02:03. | :02:07.
interpretation and education teams have won wards and brought in the | :02:07. | :02:13.
crowds, but with budget cuts, they were cut. This was the unique | :02:13. | :02:17.
selling point of the museum. It brought in numbers that may not | :02:17. | :02:24.
have otherwise have visited. It was a unique experience, the | :02:24. | :02:31.
combination of interpretation and education, there were a factor that | :02:31. | :02:36.
brought everyone in. The changes have coincided with a dramatic fall | :02:36. | :02:40.
in visitor numbers. In the last financial year a quarter nearly | :02:40. | :02:47.
82,000 people visited the Armouries. In the same period this year, there | :02:48. | :02:53.
was a fall of 30 % in visitors, but according to the Royal Armouries, | :02:53. | :02:58.
there is another cause. It was a beautiful, hot summer in Easter, | :02:58. | :03:06.
nobody goes indoors to a museum. When we change the education, and | :03:06. | :03:08.
unfortunately the staff took voluntary redundancy, that meant we | :03:08. | :03:12.
could not provide the quality of education to schools that we would | :03:12. | :03:17.
have liked, so we lost about 10,000 school children in that period. We | :03:17. | :03:21.
have restarted the education for September and will accept those the | :03:21. | :03:26.
visitors again. Add to that, the horse shows brought about peak | :03:26. | :03:31.
times and they hope they can use this to win back visitors who | :03:31. | :03:36.
enjoyed the old displays. There are more people because of the added | :03:36. | :03:41.
attractions, and looking at the faces of the people at the live | :03:41. | :03:45.
attractions, it was fantastic. is disappointing that it is not on | :03:45. | :03:50.
on a Monday, but there is still plenty to do. I like all of the | :03:50. | :03:56.
weapons and the guns. The budget has been cut by nearly 4.5 million | :03:56. | :04:00.
over the next four years. The resultant cuts were severe and | :04:00. | :04:04.
controversial. But the key test is if the visitors notice the | :04:04. | :04:12.
difference. It seems that for now at least, they may have. | :04:12. | :04:16.
Let's talk to Dr Mark Westgarth, a lecturer in a museum studies at | :04:16. | :04:19.
Leeds University. They are blaming the weather and other factors, is | :04:19. | :04:24.
that fair enough? The weather would play a role in the number of | :04:24. | :04:28.
visitors that are interested in going there, but we cannot deny | :04:28. | :04:32.
that funding cuts, government funding cuts would impact the | :04:32. | :04:38.
staffing at the Armouries and at other museums as well. The national | :04:38. | :04:43.
picture is much more complex than the cuts in the north. The museums | :04:43. | :04:49.
nationally are up, less than 1%, but they are increasing envisages | :04:49. | :04:53.
on average. When you look at the Royal Armouries, they are so | :04:53. | :04:57.
significantly down. The live jousting so goes on, but it is not | :04:57. | :05:01.
as significant as it used to be, is there something wrong with the | :05:02. | :05:07.
museum? Some people say it is cold, sterile, a boy is the pace, I love | :05:07. | :05:12.
it. There are different museums for different people, the Armouries has | :05:12. | :05:16.
a different audience, it is a collection of national significance | :05:16. | :05:20.
and Leeds should be proud to have a national museum in the city centre. | :05:20. | :05:25.
I think if you look at their game, if you'll get the picture | :05:25. | :05:30.
nationally, museum visiting is up. There are localised museums that | :05:30. | :05:35.
are having some of the funding cuts and they're having effects on this | :05:35. | :05:41.
ball, and the exhibitions and other kinds of aspects. -- having an | :05:41. | :05:47.
effect on it all. If you look at the National Rail Museum, they have | :05:47. | :05:51.
a special exhibition on the Flying Scotsman, does that help to draw | :05:51. | :05:57.
extra people in if you have that special offer, so to speak? Special | :05:57. | :06:01.
exhibitions and the media itself will create an interest in going to | :06:01. | :06:05.
the railway museum. The rail raid museum is in York which is a | :06:05. | :06:10.
heritage site anyway. -- the Railway Museum. Any advice for | :06:10. | :06:16.
these museums? In the sense of getting more people to turn up? | :06:16. | :06:21.
Temporary exhibitions are a good way to attract a new audience. Also, | :06:21. | :06:25.
engaging the existing audience, because you cannot go to see the | :06:25. | :06:32.
same displays every week. In live jazz to between some of us here ex | :06:32. | :06:37.
back -- a live jazz to retrieve some of us here! Had you been to | :06:37. | :06:41.
visit any of these museums during the summer holidays, if you have, | :06:41. | :06:51.
:06:51. | :07:00. | ||
Also tonight: Brown to -- ground breaking research in the area for | :07:00. | :07:05.
people suffering from life- threatening heart blockages. | :07:05. | :07:08.
Coronary disease can be hit and miss, but computer software | :07:08. | :07:13.
developed in Sheffield between the university and hospital can help to | :07:13. | :07:20.
eliminate human error. We have this excuse of report. | :07:21. | :07:24.
-- exclusive report. This man's heart condition has got | :07:24. | :07:28.
no worse than the last month with more breathlessness and chest pain. | :07:28. | :07:32.
Coronary heart disease is the most common cause of death and illness | :07:32. | :07:37.
in the UK, but work between Sheffield Hospital and University | :07:37. | :07:41.
with volunteers like Malvern Wells analyse problems are much more | :07:41. | :07:47.
detail. Normally, a catheter is fed into the heart and an X-ray monitor | :07:47. | :07:54.
is it. Here, a pressure probe will also analyse the flow and pressure | :07:54. | :07:58.
across the narrowing arteries. way it happens at the moment is hit | :07:58. | :08:04.
and miss. We're trying to inject some signs into the process, so we | :08:04. | :08:09.
will measure the pressure drop across these narrowings and a | :08:09. | :08:12.
colleague of mine that I am doing the research with his writings and | :08:12. | :08:17.
clever software that can predict exactly what this pressure drop | :08:17. | :08:22.
will be. So at the end of the day, beacon simply ask the software to | :08:22. | :08:28.
tell us what to treat. -- we can simply ask. This man has three | :08:28. | :08:33.
narrowings. The extra pressure allows an exact diagnosis about | :08:33. | :08:39.
what to treat. We measured the drop in pressure across each of them. | :08:39. | :08:44.
This is the wire across all of them. The pressure across this one was | :08:44. | :08:49.
not significant but it was across these, so we put in a Stent and you | :08:49. | :08:55.
can see Betty has a nice Stent across these two narrowings, but | :08:55. | :09:02.
not this one. And this is the size of this life-saving stand. Anything | :09:02. | :09:07.
that improves your quality of life, you need to look at doing it. I'm | :09:07. | :09:11.
looking forward to having it done and I'm glad that today is | :09:11. | :09:18.
happening. How do you feel now? % better. If we can treat the | :09:18. | :09:22.
patient or investigate with one single Test, then it would save | :09:22. | :09:28.
endless sun necessary tests, time and of course, money. When it is | :09:28. | :09:31.
developed, the software from Sheffield could be applied to any | :09:31. | :09:38.
body having an angiogram worldwide. They keep coming up with the wide | :09:38. | :09:42.
years in Yorkshire! Well done to the team. Coming up later: Getting | :09:42. | :09:47.
the message across, poet Ian McNeill enjoys the campaign to help | :09:47. | :09:53.
us go digital. -- joins the campaign. | :09:53. | :10:02.
Major this week, thousands of students will get their A-level | :10:02. | :10:07.
results. Unexciting but nerve- racking time. With tuition fees | :10:07. | :10:11.
rising and the job market are looking bleak, the Ratchford | :10:11. | :10:17.
supermarket chain, Morrisons, has said it will fund the education of | :10:17. | :10:26.
1,000 school leavers in the bid to recruit new store managers. | :10:26. | :10:31.
Ian Richardson has worked at Morrisons for 22 years. He joined | :10:31. | :10:36.
straight from school and climbed his way up the retell ladder. | :10:36. | :10:41.
the time I worked on the checkout. In those days, it was myself and | :10:41. | :10:45.
another man on the checkout, but we were mother to buy some of the | :10:45. | :10:51.
older checkout ladies and they took us under their wing. If something | :10:51. | :10:56.
he didn't have the right price, he would put the item into the air and | :10:56. | :11:00.
somebody to price. My career evolved from that. With hard work, | :11:00. | :11:05.
he went from the shop floor to the top floor and now 1,000 school | :11:05. | :11:09.
leavers will get the chance to be a store manager as well. But their | :11:09. | :11:13.
degrees in retail management will be funded by the supermarket chain. | :11:13. | :11:17.
Students starting university next year can expect to finish their | :11:17. | :11:22.
degrees with debts of up to 60,000. That is double this year's figure | :11:22. | :11:27.
and is fuelled by the dramatic hike in tuition fees. The chance to | :11:27. | :11:32.
learn while you learn sounds appealing, especially in a | :11:32. | :11:36.
saturated job market, but before you can get you a lecture theatre, | :11:36. | :11:40.
you have to work for six months full-time in a store and get your | :11:40. | :11:45.
hands dirty. It is about doing a full-time job, getting business | :11:45. | :11:49.
under your fingernails, understanding retell, because it is | :11:49. | :11:54.
a tough business. -- Retail. Then there is the opportunity to | :11:54. | :11:58.
continue their education and work towards their degree. Experts | :11:58. | :12:02.
expect a rise in the popularity of the Corporate degree and at a time | :12:02. | :12:07.
when graduate employment is pretty bleak, the chance of a debt free | :12:07. | :12:11.
education would be appealing to many. | :12:11. | :12:15.
Thank you. Some breaking news and a woman from Chesterfield has died | :12:15. | :12:21.
after being overcome by fumes in a tent in Wales. Police were called | :12:21. | :12:25.
to a Kent this morning at a campsite. Two men in the tent were | :12:25. | :12:30.
in a comfortable condition in hospital. Hazel Woodhams award for | :12:30. | :12:35.
West Yorkshire Police was overcome by fumes from a barbecue. It is | :12:35. | :12:38.
thought they moved charcoal ashes into their tent which caused fumes | :12:38. | :12:43.
to build up and kill her. Her funeral was held last Friday. | :12:43. | :12:48.
A 23-year-old man was charged with murder at three shooting in Leeds | :12:48. | :12:52.
which led to some disturbances. -- after a shooting. Three men were | :12:52. | :12:56.
charged with assisting an offender. Cavan Clark was hit on the face on | :12:56. | :13:01.
Monday night and died in hospital on Friday. One man and a 22-year- | :13:01. | :13:05.
old woman had been questioned by police about that and a further 10 | :13:05. | :13:15.

In Kirklees, 26 people have been arrested after trouble last week. | :13:16. | :13:24.
There were attempts to have to look at an Asda store. | :13:25. | :13:30.
A team of digital TV experts is in a Leeds preparing for Yorkshire's | :13:30. | :13:37.
last switch-over from analogue to digital. The Emley Moor mast will | :13:37. | :13:41.
switch to digital in September. He was in Scarborough, Sheffield and | :13:41. | :13:45.
Chesterfield have already begun the process. Some of the struggle to | :13:46. | :13:51.
get your favourite channels. Poet Iain McMillan is helping to get the | :13:51. | :14:01.
:14:01. | :14:02. | ||
message across. Yorkshire's official digital poet at a workshop | :14:02. | :14:06.
for kids in Leeds today. It seems even here they are making a song | :14:06. | :14:13.
and dance about the Digital Switchover. By the end of the day, | :14:13. | :14:17.
there have been to create the special poem to signal the switch | :14:17. | :14:22.
to a new era of all digital TV. That is because in September, the | :14:22. | :14:25.
Emley Moor transmitter which serves more than 4 million viewers will be | :14:25. | :14:31.
switched off. The analogue TV signal would disappear across most | :14:31. | :14:35.
of Yorkshire. If you want to keep it, you will have to go digital. | :14:35. | :14:45.
:14:45. | :14:46. | ||
Wide-eyed did it at home. I helped him a bit. -- my dad did it. | :14:46. | :14:51.
don't really know what it is, it is quite complicated, so I will get my | :14:51. | :14:58.
mum and dad to do it. I am an old man but even I can do it. I have | :14:58. | :15:03.
managed to switch to digital. they have since South Yorkshire so | :15:03. | :15:07.
he has already started the process. But for many of you, the switch- | :15:07. | :15:13.
over has been a bit of a headache. So, here is how to retune your TV. | :15:13. | :15:18.
Using the remote control, press menu. Then you should get an option | :15:18. | :15:28.
:15:28. | :15:29. | ||
to select set up. Then select the fall retune option. Sooner you | :15:29. | :15:34.
channels should be automatically installed. -- sooner you channels. | :15:34. | :15:44.
:15:44. | :15:53. | ||
Good luck. -- soon your channels. Some of the had been in touch today | :15:53. | :15:56.
to say that as soon as a switch- over began, you have been getting | :15:56. | :16:04.
the wrong edition of Look North. Don't worry, you can still watch | :16:04. | :16:13.
the version you want if you call the number on this Green. Or you | :16:13. | :16:22.
can go on line -- the number on up there it's Green. Before 7pm: | :16:22. | :16:27.
Barnsley through and through. We meet the pensioner who's been on | :16:27. | :16:30.
the staff at Barnsley Football Club for nearly 70 years. From soaps to | :16:30. | :16:33.
Shakespeare and now she's at the Grand in Leeds..we catch up with | :16:33. | :16:43.
:16:43. | :16:45. | ||
actress Susan Penhaligon. Time for the sport. It's only week two of | :16:45. | :16:48.
the new football season, but that doesn't stop fans from feeling all | :16:48. | :16:52.
sorts of emotions, from the high to the low. And there was plenty of | :16:52. | :16:54.
evidence to suggest many from our local clubs were feeling both | :16:54. | :17:04.
extremes this weekend. Here's a round-up of the best of the action. | :17:04. | :17:14.
:17:14. | :17:18. | ||
Kevin Nolan gave West Ham the lead, Simon Gillette and... There was a | :17:18. | :17:21.
pre-match protest calling for Kevin Bates to stand down, with fans | :17:21. | :17:26.
fearing for the future of the club. The chairman will not have enjoyed | :17:26. | :17:32.
much day. There was a second yellow card after 26th minute and | :17:32. | :17:42.
:17:42. | :17:44. | ||
Middlesbrough soon found themselves a man down as well. Leeds remained | :17:44. | :17:50.
pointless. Some Sheffield United fans might regret voicing their | :17:50. | :17:56.
anger following the appointment of Danny Wilson. He has so far led to | :17:56. | :18:06.
:18:06. | :18:07. | ||
the blades to three wins. Sheffield Wednesday could have had a better | :18:07. | :18:17.
:18:17. | :18:17. | ||
day. Huddersfield continued to look for their first win. Then Rochdale | :18:17. | :18:25.
shared the points. Chesterfield relied on Jack Lester to help and | :18:25. | :18:30.
they are forced -- first point in League One. Rotherham fans enjoyed | :18:30. | :18:40.
:18:40. | :18:41. | ||
goals galore from Gareth Evans and another player. Bradford City got | :18:41. | :18:48.
off the mark with a point. might have noticed we missed | :18:48. | :18:51.
Barnsley out of the round-up. There's a good reason for that. We | :18:51. | :18:55.
wanted to introduce you to one of the most remarkable men at the club. | :18:55. | :18:57.
Norman Rimmington signed for Barnsley in 1944 as a goalkeeper | :18:57. | :19:02.
and has done pretty much every job imaginable for them since then. Ian | :19:02. | :19:12.
:19:12. | :19:18. | ||
Bucknell went to find out more. Congratulations! Manager Keith Hill | :19:18. | :19:23.
has become a dad again, and there is no one better qualified than | :19:23. | :19:30.
Norman Rimmington to be the first from the club to say well done. | :19:30. | :19:40.
:19:40. | :19:41. | ||
is straight forward, he likes a joke. It might be for the best bet | :19:41. | :19:46.
he never made it as a referee, but in his second -- 67 years at | :19:46. | :19:50.
Barnsley, he has done pretty much everything else. He has been a | :19:50. | :19:57.
goalkeeper, assistant manager, coach, kit manager, and even now at | :19:57. | :20:05.
87 years old he helps out in the laundry. The worst part is in the | :20:05. | :20:10.
morning when I have to get up. It's OK when I have been up about an | :20:10. | :20:16.
hour. When you get to my age, it is somewhere to go and something to do. | :20:16. | :20:22.
I could sit on a park bench and waste away, but no. I would sooner | :20:22. | :20:30.
be down here. Norman watches the game against Southampton from his | :20:30. | :20:34.
favourite quiet corner, but it isn't going well for Barnsley. | :20:34. | :20:39.
Southampton score and go on to win 1-nil. But Norman takes it all in | :20:39. | :20:43.
his stride. In his sixties seven years with Barnsley, he has seen it | :20:43. | :20:52.
all before. He has quite a sense of humour -- 67 years. I am bloody | :20:52. | :20:59.
taking this because it might not be long! Moving on to Super League, it | :20:59. | :21:02.
was a poor weekend for our clubs with only Leeds Rhinos winning. | :21:02. | :21:04.
Bradford Bulls' heavy home defeat to Hull KR yesterday means they're | :21:05. | :21:08.
almost certain to miss out on a top eight finish and the play-offs. If | :21:08. | :21:11.
you want to catch up with the rest of the action, the Super League | :21:12. | :21:18.
Show with Harry is now available on the iPlayer. That is just about it | :21:18. | :21:22.
for the sport. But a quick mention that Andrew Gale for Yorkshire has | :21:22. | :21:29.
broken his arm. Possibly a crucial blow running into the end of the | :21:29. | :21:39.

season. Good luck to the rest of the team. | :21:44. | :21:49.
Our next guest is best remembered for her time in the television | :21:49. | :21:53.
series Bouquet of Barbed Wire. She has moved freely from soaps to | :21:53. | :22:03.
Shakespeare. Susan Penhaligon is now appearing in an Agatha Christie | :22:03. | :22:08.
production at the Grand. Here she is in the BBC drama Casualty. | :22:08. | :22:14.

She is always a bit wary when she comes back from your son. Why are | :22:17. | :22:23.

you can give me advice. Is there anything that you haven't done that, | :22:30. | :22:38.
acting wise? I didn't do Hollywood. I did go over and thought I would | :22:38. | :22:43.
have a go, but I felt a bit English. I didn't stay. | :22:44. | :22:51.

Christie play. It is their last play she wrote. It is an | :23:28. | :23:34.
interesting play because she is dealing with marriage and laugh, or | :23:35. | :23:43.
philosophical ideas of good and bad. There is a murder in it and there | :23:44. | :23:47.
is an inspector who comes on. Agatha Christie fans will not be | :23:47. | :23:53.
disappointed. But it is a much deeper play than her normal | :23:53. | :24:01.
whodunit plays. I was intrigued to to hear that you went to watch | :24:01. | :24:11.
