Good evening and welcome to Look North. The main stories tonight: an

:00:07.:00:13.

investigation begins as a young couple fall to their deaths from a

:00:13.:00:21.

Leeds tower block. Also, getting tougher - Wyatt mums to be in a

:00:21.:00:26.

Yorkshire will find it harder to opt for Caesareans. And a freshly

:00:26.:00:32.

laid piece of artwork for Bradford. And I will be back with your

:00:32.:00:41.

detailed forecast, coming up shortly.

:00:41.:00:44.

First tonight, a man and a woman, believed to be partners, have

:00:44.:00:49.

fallen to their deaths from a 16- storey tower block in Leeds. The

:00:49.:00:53.

bodies of the couple, who were in their twenties, were found at the

:00:53.:00:55.

bottom of Clyde Court flats in Wortley at four o'clock this

:00:55.:00:59.

morning. Police had been called a short time before, but were unable

:00:59.:01:03.

to stop the double tragedy, which has shocked the local community.

:01:03.:01:13.
:01:13.:01:14.

Our Crime Correspondent John Cundy is at the scene with the latest.

:01:14.:01:22.

Clyde Court is one of a twin block of high-rise flats. It was here in

:01:23.:01:26.

the early hours of the morning that the double tragedy happened. Police

:01:26.:01:35.

are still trying to explain it. It has shocked many members of the

:01:35.:01:43.

community. The couple fell 100 ft from their death from a 12th floor

:01:43.:01:49.

window. Police say they are not looking for anyone else in

:01:49.:01:53.

connection with the tragedy. Shortly after 4 o'clock this

:01:53.:02:00.

morning, police were alerted by a distressed call from a flat in

:02:00.:02:05.

Clyde Court. Shortly after they arrived, a man and woman that fell

:02:05.:02:11.

from the window to the ground. They both died at the scene. Neighbours

:02:11.:02:15.

at Clyde Court spoke of hearing screaming shortly before the fall.

:02:15.:02:21.

Today it was a community in shock. I looked out the window because my

:02:21.:02:26.

partner had them screaming. Then there was a loud and thump. It was

:02:26.:02:36.

really bad. There should be a risk assessment before they move people

:02:36.:02:46.
:02:46.:02:49.

into these flats. An investigation is continuing to ascertain the

:02:49.:02:54.

reason behind this tragedy. So, who were these people and how did they

:02:54.:02:59.

come to fall from those windows? All those answers still to be cut,

:02:59.:03:04.

but a further police statement has pointed out that duped that there

:03:04.:03:13.

was police involvement immediately prior to the deaths, West Yorkshire

:03:13.:03:15.

Police's professional standards department has been informed, as

:03:15.:03:25.
:03:25.:03:27.

has the eye -- IPCC. Thank you. Pregnant women in North Yorkshire

:03:27.:03:31.

are being told they will no longer be able to choose to have a

:03:31.:03:33.

Caesarean section. Health officials say the operations will now only be

:03:33.:03:36.

granted for medical reasons. It could save the Primary Care Trust

:03:36.:03:39.

hundreds of thousands of pounds a year, but not everyone's happy

:03:39.:03:43.

about the decision. Nicola Rees can tell us more.

:03:43.:03:46.

To put this into some context for you, there were 1,738 Caesarean

:03:46.:03:51.

sections carried out in North Yorkshire in the last year. Those

:03:51.:03:56.

operations cost the NHS more than 5 million. But the vast majority

:03:56.:03:59.

were carried out in the best interests of the mum and baby - in

:03:59.:04:02.

other words there was a genuine health reason that meant a

:04:02.:04:06.

Caesarean was the safest option. But according to North Yorkshire

:04:06.:04:09.

and York Primary Care Trust, 114 of these operations were carried out

:04:09.:04:19.
:04:19.:04:22.

despite there being no medical reason. These are called elective

:04:22.:04:25.

Caesareans and they cost 155,000 last year. Well now the Primary

:04:25.:04:28.

Care Trust say they have changed their policy to stop women having a

:04:28.:04:31.

Caesarean for convenience. They say it's not about cost cutting and

:04:31.:04:33.

that natural births are safer. But today midwives have raised concerns

:04:33.:04:42.

about the decision. I think it is terribly wrong. I think doctors

:04:42.:04:48.

have spent such a long time telling women how safe Caesareans are. For

:04:48.:04:55.

the small section of women who elected have a Caesarean, it is a

:04:55.:05:00.

devastating thing to do to them. Back in 1992, 13% of babies in

:05:00.:05:03.

England were delivered by Caesarean section. But that figure's almost

:05:03.:05:06.

doubled today to 24% and most health experts agree that's too

:05:06.:05:08.

high. Today, parents have been speaking to us about North

:05:08.:05:15.

Yorkshire's plans to stop elective Caesarean. I do believe that people

:05:15.:05:21.

should have a choice, however there are a lot of celebrities who choose

:05:21.:05:25.

to have a Caesarean because they are too posh to posh and I do not

:05:25.:05:30.

agree with that. If you can afford to have a Caesarean section then

:05:30.:05:40.
:05:40.:05:42.

have it. It is unfair to be NHS. The choice should be there for

:05:42.:05:48.

medical reasons which is completely different.

:05:48.:05:51.

Well this afternoon NHS Yorkshire and Humber have said that they

:05:51.:05:53.

follow national guidelines and encourage medical staff to plan

:05:53.:06:00.

Caesarean sections only when there is a clinical reason.

:06:00.:06:06.

:06:19.:06:22.

In other news, North Yorkshire Police are searching for a prisoner

:06:22.:06:25.

who has escaped from custody. Mark Andrew Stone, who is 25 and a

:06:25.:06:27.

convicted robber, had been released on temporary licence from

:06:27.:06:30.

Northallerton Prison to do voluntary work at the town's

:06:30.:06:32.

cemetery. Police think he could be heading for South Yorkshire.

:06:32.:06:35.

A 44-year-old man has been charged with murder after a stabbing at a

:06:35.:06:38.

block of flats in Leeds on Friday. 42-year-old Stewart McGowar died in

:06:38.:06:43.

Armley. James Blair has been remanded in custody by Leeds

:06:43.:06:47.

magistrates. A boy aged 15 and man aged 39, who were questioned about

:06:47.:06:51.

the death, are on bail while inquiries continue.

:06:51.:06:54.

Work by a team at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield

:06:54.:06:59.

may bring hope of a vaccine for the HIV virus. A trial vaccine has been

:06:59.:07:01.

developed that could be used to treat existing patients and also

:07:01.:07:06.

prevent people from becoming infected. But it's at least three

:07:06.:07:11.

to five years before it could become a reality.

:07:11.:07:14.

Controversial plans for a Tesco superstore at a site in Harrogate

:07:14.:07:19.

have been recommended for approval by the Borough council. Harrogate's

:07:19.:07:26.

the only postcode area in England without a store. The retail giant

:07:26.:07:29.

was thwarted in its attempts to open in 2007 after local objections.

:07:29.:07:33.

People can have their say at a meeting on Tuesday, but the final

:07:33.:07:36.

decision lies with the Secretary of State.

:07:36.:07:40.

The number of fire stations in West Yorkshire is to be cut and 100

:07:40.:07:42.

firefighters jobs lost in a re- organisation said to save money,

:07:42.:07:45.

but provide better cover. Five new super stations sited in busier

:07:45.:07:49.

areas will replace ten older ones. Job losses should be through

:07:49.:07:59.
:07:59.:07:59.

natural wastage. The service says the changes will save 4 million.

:07:59.:08:04.

Coming up later on Look North: standing proud - the workers who

:08:04.:08:11.

have stock Rotherham's spire from toppling into the town. Dash back

:08:11.:08:19.

who have stopped. Now, nearly four months after a fire devastated

:08:19.:08:25.

Oxfam's depot in Huddersfield, staff are still working at a

:08:25.:08:30.

temporary site. 1 million worth of equipment was lost, along with

:08:30.:08:34.

60,000 worth of textiles. Our reporter had been along to see how

:08:34.:08:40.

the staff is getting on. It looks like a scene from a

:08:40.:08:47.

Wardown -- war-zone. It was back in May that a huge fire devastated

:08:48.:08:52.

Oxfam's sorting depot in Huddersfield. 1 million worth of

:08:52.:08:56.

equipment was damaged and almost four months on staff are still

:08:56.:09:00.

counting the cost. Just to come in after the Bank Holiday and seen it

:09:00.:09:05.

like this, it has been heartbreaking. It has been around

:09:05.:09:12.

for over 20 years. Before the fire, around 100 tonnes of clothing and

:09:12.:09:15.

textiles were sorted across the three warehouses every week. Much

:09:15.:09:19.

of the work relied on machinery. Two new machines had been brought

:09:19.:09:27.

in, but most of the sifting and sorting is now been done by hand.

:09:27.:09:37.

We have to do a lot of Manual Handling. We have to open up access

:09:37.:09:43.

ourselves. It is much harder, but we have got a job. In this

:09:43.:09:47.

warehouse they sought around 80 tons of stock every week. It is not

:09:47.:09:54.

known what caused the fire. The building is back with the landlords.

:09:54.:10:02.

Work to clear at the site will be so because there was asbestos in

:10:02.:10:06.

the ceilings. We are looking for a new home. We don't know when it

:10:06.:10:11.

will be because it has to be the right place. We will keep going

:10:11.:10:17.

until we get one. It took 12 hours to bring the fire under control. As

:10:17.:10:22.

you can see, work goes on and donations continue to arrive, but

:10:22.:10:27.

it will be several months before the team are back up to full

:10:27.:10:33.

production. I didn't realise it was eight

:10:33.:10:38.

National depot. Keep up the good work. Talking of work, this one is

:10:38.:10:42.

to build a six acre park in Bradford City Centre. It was taken

:10:42.:10:48.

a step forward today with the delivery of three sterna egg

:10:48.:10:52.

sculptures. They cost 10,000 each and had been made from local stone.

:10:52.:10:57.

It is hoped they will be a focal point of the city's latest

:10:57.:11:01.

regeneration project. Our reporter has been finding out what the

:11:01.:11:06.

locals think of it. Bradford has been experiencing a

:11:06.:11:13.

long and sometimes painful rebirth, so it seems appropriate that the

:11:13.:11:20.

artwork and the new park comes in the shape of three egg shaped

:11:20.:11:29.

sculptures. I might be old- fashioned, but I'm not sure. What

:11:29.:11:39.
:11:39.:11:43.

is so special about stoned eggs? -- stone. Is that meant to be modern

:11:43.:11:51.

art? But artist, who won the commission, has spent months

:11:51.:11:56.

snoozing - Max moving these spherical shapes. They are very

:11:56.:12:02.

organic and simple. When the project is complete, the art work

:12:02.:12:12.
:12:12.:12:15.

will sit alongside the biggest man- made waterways in the UK. We are

:12:15.:12:22.

hopeful that in a few years' time you will see office developments

:12:22.:12:28.

around the city park. To attract that investment, it you need an

:12:28.:12:37.

environment that is attractive and art were forms a great part of that.

:12:37.:12:42.

Even that won't be art work was being delivered, the city was dealt

:12:42.:12:48.

a blow with one of its much loved department stores closing. But

:12:48.:12:52.

hopefully the city park will be completed by the end of the year in

:12:52.:13:02.
:13:02.:13:09.

Now we've heard of the leaning Tower of Pisa and the crooked Spire

:13:09.:13:12.

of Chesterfield - and now it's emerged we almost had a toppling

:13:12.:13:15.

tower of Rotherham. Scaffolding has been supporting the Minster's Tower

:13:15.:13:18.

for over eight months since the spire started to lean. Emma

:13:18.:13:28.
:13:28.:13:28.

Blackburn climbed 200 feet to find out more. He he did has been

:13:28.:13:34.

standing tall since the 15th century, but never before have we

:13:34.:13:37.

had a tilting Rotherham Minster. When it looked like it was leaning

:13:37.:13:41.

that way, up went the scaffolding along with the stonemasons, and

:13:41.:13:47.

when it looked like the work was complete, up went Look North, 200

:13:48.:13:55.

ft, 20 of these ladders. We are not yet halfway, but it is not that

:13:55.:14:00.

often you get that close to the tower clock. The scaffolding has

:14:00.:14:05.

been up since before Christmas. Work started in June. It was

:14:05.:14:11.

originally thought at the entire span that after the restructured

:14:11.:14:16.

but three metres from the top they nailed the problem. We found an old

:14:16.:14:20.

steeplejack's hook that had been left in the wall, which was letting

:14:21.:14:27.

water in which was travelling down, which was corroding the spire even

:14:27.:14:33.

more, and stripping out the stonework. It was down to one hook?

:14:33.:14:39.

One steeplejack's hook. I bet you are crossing that worker! Now that

:14:39.:14:44.

most of it has been repaired, the scaffolding can start to come down

:14:44.:14:49.

next week. It has cost 140,000, which has mainly come from private

:14:49.:14:55.

donations. He have got to accept that these things have to be done

:14:55.:14:59.

and repairs have to be made. With this being such an unusual and

:14:59.:15:04.

important piece of work, it is highly unlikely new route -- that

:15:04.:15:11.

we would be able to go up again in our lifetimes. We are now 200 ft

:15:11.:15:17.

high at the top of Rotherham Minster's power. I have been told I

:15:17.:15:21.

am the first woman to go up this hive. Now the only problem is, I

:15:21.:15:28.

have got to go back down! I think the leaning Tower of Rotherham

:15:28.:15:37.

could have been quite an attraction! I am just hearing in my

:15:37.:15:47.
:15:47.:15:47.

earpiece that she is safe and well. Let's turn to sport now, and it's

:15:47.:15:51.

fair to say that the "JP Trophy" will not be a top priority for any

:15:51.:15:55.

of our clubs this season. But the final is at Wembley, so it's worth

:15:55.:15:59.

doing well in. After last night's first round ties - with the

:15:59.:16:02.

exception of Sheffield Wednesday - we'll have a strong presence in the

:16:02.:16:04.

second round. Paul Ogden reports. With new manager Phil Parkinson

:16:04.:16:06.

watching from the stands, the Bradford players saw their chance,

:16:06.:16:08.

as Sheffield Wednesday's Gary Megson made his stock substitution

:16:08.:16:11.

of the night, by the 18th minute. It stayed 0-0 through 90 minutes

:16:11.:16:14.

and Sheffield Wednesday did not fare much better in the penalty

:16:14.:16:19.

shoot out. Morrison and Palmer failed as the City keeper took

:16:19.:16:25.

centre stage. His save from Chris Sedgwick sealed victory for

:16:25.:16:33.

Bradford. Killing 1-0, Sheffield United turned things around with

:16:33.:16:39.

two wiggles. David McAllister equalised and, with penalties

:16:39.:16:45.

looming, Norwegian Erik Thomas back the winner. Their manager is

:16:45.:16:52.

seriously hoping to get to Wembley this season. Although they will be

:16:52.:16:58.

unhappy to have conceded an equaliser, no VAT sealed a 2-1

:16:58.:17:08.
:17:08.:17:12.

victory in the second - and with it, a ticket into round two. --Novak.

:17:12.:17:16.

And of course it's transfer deadline day - a time when a team's

:17:16.:17:19.

destiny can be changed by a last minute piece of business. Sheffield

:17:19.:17:22.

Wednesday have signed striker Ryan Lowe from Bury, seen here scoring

:17:22.:17:26.

against Huddersfield Town on the first day of the new campaign. It's

:17:26.:17:29.

one of seven goals he's already scored this season, whilst the Owls

:17:29.:17:33.

have only scored nine between them. To keep up to date with all the

:17:33.:17:37.

comings and goings, log on to the BBC Football website where you can

:17:37.:17:40.

also see a Football Focus Transfer Day Special from 10.30 tonight. In

:17:40.:17:43.

cricket, Yorkshire have been playing Warwickshire today as they

:17:43.:17:46.

battle to avoid relegation from the top division of the County

:17:46.:17:49.

Championship. They got off to a strong start as stand-in captain

:17:49.:17:52.

Joe Sayers made 84 and Adam Lyth weighed in with 74. But the

:17:53.:17:55.

Warwickshire bowlers fought back after tea, and Yorkshire finished

:17:55.:18:03.

on 254 for 8. They would have wanted a few more than that, I

:18:03.:18:11.

think. Now this week marks a year to go until the 2012 Paralympic

:18:11.:18:14.

Games get underway in London. And to mark the occasion, we're going

:18:14.:18:18.

to be talking to two of our medal hopefuls. One made his mark last

:18:18.:18:22.

time round at the 2008 Games, while the other's hoping to compete at

:18:22.:18:25.

her first Games. That's wheelchair racer Hannah Cockroft from Halifax

:18:25.:18:28.

who's here in studio, but first Neil Smallburn has been to meet

:18:28.:18:34.

David Stone at his home on the outskirts of Leeds. Beijing was a

:18:34.:18:43.

great success for David Stone. Two competitions and two golds. But a

:18:43.:18:49.

lot has changed. And you home, Monty, and your dog, and new

:18:49.:18:59.
:18:59.:19:14.

challenges. In 2009 I was mainly of the bike, due to an illness. In

:19:14.:19:19.

2010... The this season has not gone to plan. David cannot get on

:19:19.:19:24.

his bike. Preparing for an event in Belgium, the front part of his

:19:24.:19:34.
:19:34.:19:44.

tricycle snapped. I was knocked unconscious. I suffered whiplash.

:19:44.:19:50.

Now, hopefully, it will get better soon. And it needs to. He is

:19:50.:19:57.

supposed to be off to the World Championships in Denmark next week.

:19:57.:20:07.
:20:07.:20:09.

I'd guess I am trying to get things to improve in my 2012. The very day

:20:09.:20:19.
:20:19.:20:35.

I would be lying if I said I did He is so brilliant, isn't he? Had

:20:35.:20:42.

joins us now. We have kept talking to you many times. Now it is coming

:20:42.:20:49.

down to a reality. It is one year to go, less than 365 days left of

:20:49.:20:52.

training. And there is so much stuff you've still got to do. That

:20:53.:21:00.

is exciting, but it is quite scary. We have to qualify for 2012 that

:21:00.:21:07.

the team. We have to get qualifying times three things this year and

:21:07.:21:12.

two times next year. We do not find but if we are in the team until the

:21:12.:21:15.

9th July, 2012. That is still quite close to the beginning of the

:21:15.:21:19.

season. To get qualifying times twice and that a matter of time is

:21:20.:21:26.

quite a lot of pressure, but it should still be OK. Does it seem

:21:26.:21:31.

like another distant event that you are not too bothered about? No, it

:21:31.:21:34.

is too close! It focuses you lot more because you have got something

:21:34.:21:41.

to aim for, now. It is exciting, but I need to get there first.

:21:41.:21:47.

Casting our minds back to the first Paralympics, the response today is

:21:47.:21:55.

up there, with the Olympics, with the achievements of Jess Innes. At

:21:55.:22:01.

last, equality has been achieved with disabled athletes and able

:22:01.:22:06.

atlas. You think we're there yet? It will take a few years before we

:22:06.:22:11.

have seen on the same level as elite athletes like Jessica Ennis.

:22:11.:22:17.

Because we train just as hard, but it is just as there, and I take

:22:17.:22:23.

part in parallel events were they when able-bodied events along with

:22:23.:22:26.

disabled events and it makes people realise that we are just as good as

:22:26.:22:35.

them, and it is getting there, slowly but surely. You spire was a

:22:35.:22:41.

people. People are taking notice. Thank you very much. -- You inspire

:22:41.:22:49.

a lot of people. Now remember on last night's Look North we showed

:22:49.:22:52.

you all that camping gear left behind after the Leeds Festival?

:22:52.:22:56.

Well, we've got rid of it. Not us personally, but after we told you

:22:56.:23:00.

about the sale that was taking place this morning, it was sold out

:23:00.:23:03.

in an hour. Here's Danny Carpenter. We saw Paul Hudson queuing at about

:23:03.:23:11.

9 o'clock in the morning! Abandoned, unwanted, unloved. But that was

yesterday. Today these only Pents are back in demand. Everybody loves

:23:19.:23:25.

a bargain. And will give you some mats, some sleeping bags, it is

:23:25.:23:32.

100 for a bag... And that really is a bargain, which is why there

:23:32.:23:36.

are hundreds of people queuing, even if it meant getting your and

:23:37.:23:42.

stutter. When this warehouse opened it had the contents of to 7.5 tonne

:23:42.:23:46.

trucks in it. Less than fortified minutes later, it was nearly all

:23:46.:23:56.
:23:56.:23:58.

gone. -- 45 minutes. A smaller person might have got one over.

:23:58.:24:05.

They were here from about 9 o'clock and almost broke the door down!

:24:05.:24:09.

have volunteered to help clean up next year. I cannot believe the

:24:09.:24:14.

stuff that they have left, but it is fantastic. High will clean it

:24:14.:24:19.

and then I will share it with my friends, definitely. Not only is it

:24:19.:24:23.

a good deal for all these people, it is a good deal for the charity.

:24:23.:24:28.

The money raised helps projects worldwide that work with young

:24:28.:24:33.

people, which is kind of appropriate, when you consider who

:24:33.:24:41.

left all this stuff in the first place. I am glad about that. Lots

:24:41.:24:46.

of money raised. I think that is really important. People are

:24:47.:24:53.

benefiting from that. I am happy to say that he is back. Did you

:24:54.:25:03.

forget? What do you think this summer has been like in Yorkshire?

:25:03.:25:08.

The statistics are in. I think it has been average, slightly older,

:25:09.:25:17.

and August has been wetter. They tell us the opposite. I have been

:25:17.:25:20.

surprised because many people have said to me that it has been a

:25:20.:25:24.

rubbish summer, but it has been a typical you're just Armagh. I

:25:24.:25:32.

thought that was quite interesting. -- it has been a typical Yorkshire

:25:32.:25:42.
:25:42.:25:43.

Summer. This picture took my breath away. It is beautiful. The Heather

:25:43.:25:53.

looking stunning. That was at the weekend. You can read those

:25:53.:26:03.
:26:03.:26:06.

We have a similar weather picture to the one at I showed last night.

:26:06.:26:12.

Friday is looking brighter and warmer. One or two glimmers of

:26:12.:26:20.

brightness, in leads an to the east, but it is a cloudy into the day.

:26:20.:26:24.

Overnight, a few breaks and that cloud. Just a very small chance of

:26:24.:26:30.

catching a shower. Temperatures down to eight Celsius. The sun

:26:30.:26:38.

rises in the morning at 6:15am. Those are the times of high water.

:26:38.:26:43.

Tomorrow, just a small chance of a shower. Variable amounts of cloud,

:26:43.:26:49.

but if you are lucky you might catch a little bit of sunshine. But

:26:49.:26:55.

these will be a light south easterly. Feeling fairly pleasant.

:26:55.:27:01.

Temperatures on the coast around 16 Celsius. Inland, highs of around 18

:27:01.:27:11.
:27:11.:27:13.

Celsius. And Friday should be brighter and warmer. Do you have

:27:14.:27:22.

complaints? Stock -- you should say, stop picking on me. Thank you for

:27:22.:27:28.

the e-mails about that story about Caesareans. Janet has written in to

:27:28.:27:32.

say that the match should be carried out on medical grounds

:27:32.:27:37.
