Good evening, and welcome to Look North. On the programme tonight: | :00:03. | :00:06.
Back on the agenda. The mother of Ben Needham, who went missing in | :00:06. | :00:09.
Greece 20 years ago, is granted her first ever meeting at the Foreign | :00:09. | :00:12.
Office. Four years for a drink-drive killer. | :00:12. | :00:15.
Jamie Still was killed in Otley on New Year's Eve, knocked down by a | :00:15. | :00:21.
drunken reveller. And here come the girls, as the St | :00:21. | :00:30.
Leger's Ladies' Day adds a bit of glamour to today's racing card. | :00:30. | :00:34.
More rain and drizzle tonight. Something brighter and one Russia | :00:34. | :00:44.
:00:44. | :00:48. | ||
come, but the full forecast coming After more than 20 years of | :00:48. | :00:53.
fighting, Kerry Needham was today granted her first ever meeting with | :00:53. | :00:56.
the Foreign Office over her search for her missing son. We caught up | :00:56. | :01:01.
with her as she came out of the 30 minutes' discussion with the Europe | :01:01. | :01:05.
Minister. She said the meeting had lifted her hopes of finding her son. | :01:05. | :01:10.
She has never given up hope of finding her son, who was only 21 | :01:10. | :01:18.
months when he disappeared on Kos. It has been two decades of | :01:18. | :01:22.
frustration and heartbreak for Kerry Needham. Anniversaries of her | :01:22. | :01:26.
son's disappearance have come and gone. Today at least with the | :01:26. | :01:30.
meeting here, she feels that the search for Ben has taken another | :01:30. | :01:37.
step forward. Her life changed for ever when he disappeared, and for | :01:37. | :01:41.
20 years, Kerry Needham has been determined to find her son. He went | :01:41. | :01:47.
missing during a family holiday on the Greek island of Kos, in July | :01:47. | :01:52.
1991. He was just 21 of sold at the time. Now at the age of 21, this is | :01:52. | :01:57.
how he might look. Over the years, Terry has made many emotional | :01:57. | :02:02.
appeals for help. He will come back, and then I will just watch him grow | :02:02. | :02:09.
up for the rest of his lies. I'm just waiting. Now she is pushing | :02:09. | :02:14.
the Government for more resources to investigate a case. Today, she | :02:14. | :02:16.
has been in London for a long awaited meeting with the Europe | :02:16. | :02:23.
minister. He is aware of the case obviously, from 1991. And he said | :02:23. | :02:29.
that he can't imagine what it has been like for us. I asked for a few | :02:29. | :02:35.
requests, from governmental status. And he seems to listen, with great | :02:35. | :02:42.
interest. And I think that he will do what we have asked of him. At | :02:42. | :02:46.
the end of the day, I am just a mum who wants to find her son and needs | :02:46. | :02:50.
all the help she can get. And I feel that after leaving a meeting, | :02:50. | :02:57.
I will get it now a. Today's meeting has been a long time coming. | :02:58. | :03:01.
She wrote to the Prime Minister asking for help. Since then she, | :03:01. | :03:05.
she has been pushing for a meeting at the Foreign Office. Now that it | :03:05. | :03:09.
has happened, Kerry Needham will no doubt be making sure that the | :03:09. | :03:14.
search for her son stays in the public spotlight. | :03:14. | :03:19.
Angela Smith is a South Yorkshire MP. She joins us tonight from | :03:19. | :03:24.
London. Angela, Kerry Needham is saying she is delighted how them -- | :03:24. | :03:27.
with how the meeting went. What do you think? I think it went very | :03:27. | :03:33.
well. The Minister sat and listened very carefully to what Kerry | :03:33. | :03:40.
Needham had to say. He had clearly read very thoroughly the details of | :03:40. | :03:44.
Ben's case. And I think that more than anything else, he was | :03:44. | :03:48.
absolutely clear that the government will do whatever it is | :03:48. | :03:52.
reasonably able to to support Kerry Needham in her search. I have to | :03:52. | :03:59.
say, I had been covering the story for 20 years. Kerry Needham's | :03:59. | :04:02.
determination has never cease to amaze me. But why on earth has it | :04:02. | :04:06.
taken two decades for the government to actually say, this is | :04:06. | :04:10.
something we should talk to his mother about? Absolutely, it has | :04:10. | :04:15.
taken far too long. I do not think anyone can deny that. What I can | :04:15. | :04:20.
say is that we do now appear to have things coming together, quite | :04:20. | :04:24.
well now, we have South Yorkshire police working with the Greek | :04:24. | :04:29.
authorities, very very co- operatively. And we have the | :04:29. | :04:34.
government saying at last that it will do whatever it can to support | :04:34. | :04:38.
South Yorkshire Police in the work they are doing. And I think that | :04:38. | :04:42.
means, as I have said, we had everything coming together now a. | :04:42. | :04:45.
And I think that's one of the reasons why Kerry Needham is so | :04:45. | :04:50.
pleased with the outcome of today's meeting. | :04:50. | :04:54.
The mother of a teenager killed by a drunk driver has described her | :04:54. | :04:59.
son's killer's sentence as no where near long enough. Jamie Still was | :04:59. | :05:04.
knocked over on New year's Eve in not leave. Max McRae was found to | :05:04. | :05:08.
be nearly twice the drink-drive limit. And he was speeding when he | :05:08. | :05:15.
hit Jimmy. How do Tomlinson is in Otley. | :05:15. | :05:19.
December 31st last year was a busy night here in Otley town centre. | :05:19. | :05:25.
Lots of people were out wanting to celebrate and look ahead to 2011. | :05:25. | :05:29.
But it was to be the worst year imaginable for one family. That | :05:29. | :05:32.
night, Max McRae consumed twice the legal limit of alcohol before | :05:32. | :05:38.
getting into his car. In that half hour before his accident, his | :05:38. | :05:43.
girlfriend phoned him 12 times pleading with him to get out of the | :05:43. | :05:49.
car and hand her the keys. But he chose to ignore her. 21-year-old | :05:49. | :05:52.
Max McRae walked into Leeds Crown Court to hear the consequences of | :05:52. | :05:57.
his actions eight months ago. It was New year's Eve. He was out with | :05:57. | :06:02.
friends in Otley, he drank five pints and a shot and decided to | :06:02. | :06:05.
teach his friend how to drive. Behind the wheel, and at speeds of | :06:05. | :06:12.
up to 50 miles an hour in a 30s own, he hit 16-year-old Jamie Still, a | :06:12. | :06:16.
student at St Mary's School he was out buying some Chinese food. The | :06:16. | :06:19.
teenager was thrown into some metal sheeting at the Methodist Church. | :06:19. | :06:24.
He died at Leeds General Infirmary two hours later. After pleading | :06:24. | :06:29.
guilty to the charges, Max McRae was sentenced to four years in | :06:29. | :06:33.
prison and disqualified from driving for five years. Today, we | :06:33. | :06:37.
watched her son's killer being sentenced. I should have been | :06:37. | :06:42.
juggling my son off at school. We are glad that Max McRae has been | :06:42. | :06:47.
sent to prison, and we can now properly grieved over Jamie. | :06:47. | :06:50.
hope that anybody tempted to drive the vehicle whilst under the | :06:50. | :06:57.
influence of alcohol may think twice. The maximum sentence is 14 | :06:57. | :07:01.
years. Why four years has been handed down, what is the point of | :07:01. | :07:05.
having a maximum sentence if it is not handed down? It would make | :07:05. | :07:10.
people stop and think before they drink and drive. In court, Jamie | :07:10. | :07:14.
Still's mother gripped a friend's hand, holding back the tears as she | :07:14. | :07:20.
heard the details of her son's last minutes. She has vowed to campaign | :07:20. | :07:25.
for zero tolerance on drink driving. Included in pre-sentence reports | :07:25. | :07:29.
today was a letter from Max McRae to be judged. In it, he said, I | :07:29. | :07:34.
deeply regret what happened Iron so sorry, I cannot do anything to make | :07:34. | :07:38.
things right. But the family still maintain he has not shown them any | :07:38. | :07:45.
remorse. Later on the programme: Give | :07:45. | :07:49.
yourself up. Lindsey Scholes died in an arson attack. 10 years on, | :07:49. | :07:56.
her mother appeals to her killers. And nine-year-old boy he was badly | :07:56. | :08:01.
injured when he was attacked by two dogs vast playing in woods in Leeds | :08:01. | :08:05.
has spoken of his ordeal. Eating she looked suffered a broken wrist | :08:05. | :08:09.
and cuts to his face and head after being dragged to the ground by the | :08:09. | :08:15.
animals -- Ethan Hewitt. Police are trying to trace the dogs. | :08:15. | :08:19.
Ethan Hewitt and his friends regularly play in these woods. On | :08:19. | :08:23.
Sunday afternoon they built a rope swing, and he did you it was on the | :08:23. | :08:27.
swing when he sold dogs coming towards them. They jumped up, | :08:27. | :08:32.
pulled into the ground, and began mauling his face and dance. Four | :08:32. | :08:37.
days on, Ethan Hewitt can vividly recall how the dogs victim, and how | :08:37. | :08:42.
he tried to protect himself. For I curled up into a little ball with | :08:42. | :08:48.
my arms around my head, and first of all they started on my head. | :08:48. | :08:55.
Then they started on my elbow. And that one hurt. But the one that | :08:55. | :09:00.
hurt the most was my eye. It was Ethan Hewitt's cousin he came to | :09:00. | :09:05.
the rescue. Set in year-old Matthew wrist injury to himself when he | :09:05. | :09:13.
told his cousin away from the dogs and carried him out of the woods. | :09:13. | :09:17.
don't know what I did. I cannot thank Matthew enough. If he had not | :09:17. | :09:21.
been there, I think that Matthew saved his life. He has been a real | :09:21. | :09:25.
hero. In Yorkshire last year, the number of people who went to | :09:25. | :09:32.
hospital with dog bites was 881. In West Yorkshire, there were 121 | :09:32. | :09:37.
cases of dogs being dangerously out of control in public spaces. For we | :09:37. | :09:40.
are concerned to prevent anything like this happening to other | :09:40. | :09:44.
children in future. And we need to speak with this man as a matter of | :09:44. | :09:48.
urgency. Eating Hewitt is expected to make a full recovery. But he | :09:48. | :09:53.
says he will not go back to return in their -- play in their woods if | :09:53. | :09:58.
there is any chance of the dogs being there. -- Ethan Hewitt. | :09:59. | :10:02.
Police are investigating the deaths of a man and woman in Huddersfield. | :10:03. | :10:06.
Officers and their bodies after being called to a house in Deighton | :10:06. | :10:10.
just before midnight. Tests are being carried out to establish how | :10:10. | :10:13.
they died. Police are not looking for anyone else in connection with | :10:13. | :10:17.
the deaths. Two men have appeared in court | :10:17. | :10:21.
charged in connection with the death of Jason Hall in Leeds. Mr | :10:21. | :10:26.
Hall died after being found with debt -- head injuries. 36-year-old | :10:26. | :10:30.
Steven Starkey is charged with murder, 37-year-old Paul Carey is | :10:30. | :10:35.
accused of assisting an offender. Both were remanded in custody. | :10:35. | :10:38.
Journalists in South Georgia had returned to work after eight weeks | :10:39. | :10:46.
on the picket line. They were on indefinite strike up -- over job | :10:46. | :10:50.
cuts. They have now voted to return to work, and Johnston Press has | :10:50. | :10:55.
agreed to resume talks. A campaign by M leads charity to | :10:55. | :11:00.
get a brand new bone cancer drug made freely available has been | :11:00. | :11:04.
successful. The Bone Cancer Research Trust teamed up with the | :11:04. | :11:08.
family of Alex Dawson, who died of osteosarcoma in 2007. They lodged | :11:08. | :11:14.
an appeal to the regulators, NICE. NICE has approved the drug for use | :11:14. | :11:19.
on the NHS. A mother has pleaded with her | :11:19. | :11:23.
daughter's killer to surrender to the police 10 years after her | :11:23. | :11:26.
murder. Lindsey Scholes died following an arson attack on a | :11:26. | :11:30.
house she was staying at in Royston near Barnsley. In the decade which | :11:30. | :11:33.
has passed since, there had been several arrests, but nobody has | :11:34. | :11:39.
been brought to justice. Today, Linzi's mother joined police in a | :11:39. | :11:45.
special anniversary appeal. That house which has held an | :11:45. | :11:49.
murderer secret for a decade. Lindsey Scholes was the innocent | :11:49. | :11:54.
victim of an arson attack which has never been solved. Lynsey was left | :11:54. | :11:59.
-- fantastic young woman, full of life and loves. She loved her | :11:59. | :12:04.
family and friends. 10 years ago, the fire was deliberately started | :12:04. | :12:10.
at this house, which led to Lindsey Scholes' debt two days later. A man | :12:10. | :12:12.
and a woman had managed to escape from an upstairs window, but she | :12:13. | :12:16.
could not get out and suffered extensive burns and smoke | :12:16. | :12:23.
inhalation. Today in Royston, her mother hoped -- helped police | :12:23. | :12:27.
relaunch their inquiries to find the killer. Think back pleased to | :12:27. | :12:31.
what she went through on that night. That pain and fear that she will | :12:31. | :12:38.
have been going through, panic. Think. They had no right taking her | :12:38. | :12:44.
life. And I want you please to ask yourself, why are you protecting | :12:44. | :12:53.
someone who is an arsonist and a killer? Relationships break up. And | :12:53. | :12:57.
people do move on and loyalties change. And what we are asking is | :12:57. | :13:01.
that one person or more may have a vital piece of information and that | :13:01. | :13:09.
they come forward and speak to us, and let us know who is responsible. | :13:09. | :13:13.
She was a big part of my life, and of her brother's' lives. We will | :13:13. | :13:19.
never get up part back. But at least if we get our justice today, | :13:19. | :13:27.
we can try and move on. But at this moment, we can. Four the last 10 | :13:27. | :13:31.
years, Lindsey Scholes has been fondly remembered by her family. | :13:31. | :13:34.
Detectives firmly believe her killer came from the local | :13:34. | :13:38.
community. And they want their help to try and find the person | :13:38. | :13:48.
:13:48. | :13:54. | ||
Thank you. Before 7pm -- Harry Gregg's plant Tel has reopened the | :13:54. | :14:04.

majestic. -- Harrogate's has reopened the majestic. | :14:06. | :14:16.
:14:16. | :14:17. | ||
And Ladies' Day at St Leger's. How was the racing? | :14:17. | :14:23.
And did not see too much of it. I was busy working. Is that what they | :14:23. | :14:28.
call it these days? Funny you wonder why did not get that job! | :14:28. | :14:33.
And you would -- you would have out staged all the ladies. Have you got | :14:33. | :14:43.
:14:43. | :14:44. | ||
a bucket? Shall we do support? -- sport. | :14:44. | :14:48.
They rain has not helped Yorkshire's outside chances of | :14:48. | :14:54.
avoiding relegation. Somerset resumed on 140 for 3. Yorkshire | :14:54. | :15:00.
bowled them out. They have got maximum bowling points at least. | :15:00. | :15:07.
Yorkshire closed on 20 without loss. In football, Sheffield United may | :15:07. | :15:11.
re-sign striker James Beattie. Danny Wilson confirmed he would be | :15:11. | :15:15.
interested in bringing Beattie back to the club. The 33-year-old left | :15:15. | :15:19.
Glasgow Rangers and a free transfer last week. The Blades boss has held | :15:19. | :15:27.
informal talks with him. On to rugby league, as Halifax and | :15:27. | :15:31.
Batley prepared to go head to head tonight in the championship play- | :15:31. | :15:35.
off semi-final. Halifax have learnt why their Super League licence | :15:35. | :15:40.
application failed in July. The RFL describe it as falling below the | :15:40. | :15:45.
standards expected of a Super League club. Halifax had failed to | :15:45. | :15:47.
provides a vision determine their marketing, media or commercial | :15:47. | :15:51.
plans. Tomorrow night, Wakefield play host | :15:51. | :15:55.
to Bradford, and it will be John Kear's final game in charge of the | :15:55. | :16:00.
Wildcats. He joined them in 2006, when they looked odds-on to get | :16:00. | :16:06.
relegated. He kept them up and has overseen the five and a bit years | :16:06. | :16:12.
that have been turbulent. It is sad, but there is an air of | :16:12. | :16:19.
contentment from a personal point of you. I feel the club is in a | :16:19. | :16:29.
:16:29. | :16:29. | ||
better state than it was when I joined. Meadows are tall! Wakefield | :16:29. | :16:37.
will survive! We were staring down the barrel of possible relegation. | :16:37. | :16:42.
So many games we had included St Helens, Leeds, Bradford. We played | :16:42. | :16:48.
really well. We managed to escape relegation. I feel we have | :16:48. | :16:56.
progressed, despite lots of topsy- turvy situations and sad situations. | :16:56. | :17:06.
:17:06. | :17:09. | ||
John had to guide the club when some people died. When you reflect, | :17:09. | :17:18.
Adam and Liam, they it ripped their heart and soul out, and it was | :17:18. | :17:23.
really difficult. You can put things into perspective, money | :17:23. | :17:28.
troubles against a loss of life, that is nothing. They have been | :17:28. | :17:32.
some tough times, but there have been great times as well. A roller | :17:32. | :17:41.
coaster is an accurate description. Having won the Challenge Cup, John | :17:41. | :17:45.
is happy to step out of the limelight for a while. Will we see | :17:45. | :17:51.
him in Super League again? I hope so, at some stage. That's down the | :17:51. | :17:56.
line. The jobs are all taken up, anyway. It will do me good to have | :17:56. | :18:05.
a look apply for elsewhere. -- it will do me good to have a look at | :18:05. | :18:09.
life elsewhere. Will you be emotional about final whistle? | :18:09. | :18:15.
will be. I think you would be inhuman not to be. I think I have | :18:15. | :18:19.
to accept that. An element of dignity and respect has to be | :18:19. | :18:26.
attached to it. I will be respectful and dignified. | :18:26. | :18:31.
It was quite something to get him to talk about himself. He was all | :18:31. | :18:36.
for talking about the players. We meet lots of different people in | :18:36. | :18:41.
our job. He is one of the nicest guys in sport. | :18:41. | :18:51.
:18:51. | :18:52. | ||
A absolutely, and so enthusiastic. Thank-you. | :18:52. | :18:56.
It is your last chance to nominate someone for the Yorkshire Community | :18:56. | :19:00.
Hero Awards. Previous winners include Ernest Hibert, who provides | :19:00. | :19:04.
food for homeless people in Wakefield, and Val Lepedat, who set | :19:04. | :19:09.
up a care centre for people with cancer. What a wonderful legacy she | :19:09. | :19:13.
left. You have until Sunday to nominate anyone you think has made | :19:13. | :19:18.
a difference in your area. If you what to put someone forward, | :19:19. | :19:28.

One of Yorkshire's most famous hotels has risen from the ashes and | :19:38. | :19:42.
reopened. I remember going to this on the day of that enormous fire in | :19:42. | :19:49.
how good. It has taken more than a year to repair the damage. It has | :19:49. | :19:54.
cost a fortune. It is truly magnificent. You could say, bit of | :19:54. | :20:00.
a clue here, it is majestic. Past staff and guests have trawled | :20:00. | :20:04.

part of history! I think they eat Majestic has always been a | :21:39. | :21:47.
fundamental part of Harrogate's business. When you merely lose | :21:48. | :21:52.
something, it makes you think a bit more about it. It is not known | :21:52. | :21:59.
exactly what caused last year's fire. The damage was extensive, but | :21:59. | :22:07.
after 111 years of history, the Majestic survives. | :22:07. | :22:12.
Looks fabulous. I could do with afternoon tea. | :22:12. | :22:17.
Scones and cream Trey! Very civilised. | :22:17. | :22:22.
I bet it was not scones that was being enjoyed in Doncaster today. | :22:22. | :22:26.
It is one of the classics, and is Britain's oldest and richest flat | :22:26. | :22:31.
race. I have a thoroughly good time when I go to the St Leger, which | :22:31. | :22:37.
runs at Doncaster on Saturday. Today it was the girls chance to | :22:37. | :22:41.
take centre stage for Ladies' Day. Always a highlight, and thousands | :22:41. | :22:48.
arrive to enjoy a spectacle. A we sent him! | :22:48. | :22:56.

Ladies. Definitely be the ladies. Will you be when yesterday? Yes. | :23:44. | :23:54.
Are you feel a lucky? Ferry. I do not know. Malloch has just changed! | :23:54. | :24:01.
That's one way to upset the wife. Alongside their hands and heels, | :24:01. | :24:07.
though St Leger is a big event and has an impact on the local economy. | :24:07. | :24:17.
We cater for over 10,000 people. It is incredibly important to the town. | :24:17. | :24:20.
Be is this wise, it is one of the best of the year. Ladies' Day is | :24:20. | :24:26.
very popular. Saturday is massive. It is on a par with the Grand | :24:26. | :24:31.
National. Business is tremendous. If for most, today was about fun | :24:31. | :24:36.
and a chance to let their hair down. Are you going to behave today? | :24:36. | :24:43.
We would like you to come with us. Is at an imitation? We would like | :24:43. | :24:49.
you to join us when you put the microphone and the camera down. | :24:49. | :24:51.
That's an offer we cannot refuse, Keith! | :24:51. | :25:01.
:25:01. | :25:03. | ||
Why were you not there, Christa? I is suggesting I am not a lady? | :25:03. | :25:09.
Not at all! She'll be there on Saturday. I have | :25:09. | :25:17.
never been on Ladies' Day. And Armley go on Saturday. -- I | :25:17. | :25:22.
normally go on Saturday. Statistically, Yorkshire has had a | :25:22. | :25:31.
quite a bit of rain. Doncaster is quite a dry spot. I have not a clue. | :25:32. | :25:41.
:25:42. | :25:48. | ||
I will show U2 pictures. The first It has rained on and off all week. | :25:48. | :25:57.
This is a second. What a contrast. The headline is a damp one at first, | :25:57. | :26:05.
but it will turn bright and eastern areas could be warm. 22 degrees. | :26:05. | :26:08.
Low-pressure but takeover. Not a write-off, but there will be | :26:08. | :26:11.
weighed. Some sunshine thrown in for good measure. Monday and | :26:12. | :26:18.
Tuesday, there could be severe gales, a risk at least. But cloud | :26:18. | :26:27.
melts away. Clouds and rolling back into the Pennines. It will turn | :26:27. | :26:31.
damp and drizzly. We are expecting some rain and drizzle to push up | :26:32. | :26:35.
from the south-west. Some persistence stuff across northern | :26:35. | :26:45.
:26:45. | :26:46. | ||
areas. Light and patchy. 13 Celsius below. The sun will rise at 620 9am, | :26:46. | :26:52.
starting at 7:37pm. Misty over the hills with outbreaks of rain and | :26:52. | :26:58.
drizzle. Slowly, the rain should move away into the North Sea. Bit | :26:58. | :27:02.
of an improvement developing. As we head into the afternoon, it is | :27:02. | :27:07.
brighter and warmer. Headingley should get a good deal of play. The | :27:07. | :27:12.
Pennines may go down held later. Basically, a better picture after | :27:12. | :27:18.
what will be a damp and dreary start. We are looking at top | :27:18. | :27:24.
temperatures of 21 of 22 across eastern parts of Yorkshire. | :27:24. | :27:34.
