Good evening, and welcome to Look North. Our top story this evening | :01:02. | :01:05.
is the arrest and questioning of six members of staff at two | :01:05. | :01:08.
nurseries in York. A joint investigation by the police | :01:08. | :01:12.
and the local council has been ongoing for the last two weeks. Our | :01:12. | :01:16.
crime correspondent John Cundy is in York with the latest. What can | :01:16. | :01:26.
:01:26. | :01:27. | ||
you tell us about these arrests? I am outside Heworth House Day | :01:27. | :01:35.
Nursery. This caters for up to 30 children up to the age of five. Six | :01:35. | :01:40.
existence at his nursery, and its sister nursery, Little Joe's Day | :01:40. | :01:45.
Nursery, who have been arrested and questioned by police, before being | :01:45. | :01:50.
released on bail. What everybody is stressing his this investigation is | :01:50. | :01:53.
into the running of the nurseries and quality of the care and welfare | :01:53. | :01:57.
of the children. There is no suggestion of any physical or | :01:57. | :02:03.
mental abuse. It centres around the question of possible neglect. | :02:03. | :02:11.
have the police had to say? police have said the six women | :02:11. | :02:16.
concerned are aged between 18 and 28. They are stressing what has | :02:17. | :02:21.
happened is standard practice in an investigation of this kind, they | :02:21. | :02:26.
have reasonable suspicion and a sense may have been committed, and | :02:27. | :02:31.
then people will be arrested and questioned. They stress it does not | :02:31. | :02:35.
necessarily follow if they have uncovered anything more sinister in | :02:35. | :02:40.
their investigations during the past 16 days. The nurseries have | :02:40. | :02:44.
remained open. To an extent, parents are being kept informed. | :02:44. | :02:51.
Has there been any reaction from the nursery? | :02:51. | :02:55.
Not from the nurseries themselves, and did not really from any parents. | :02:55. | :03:00.
It seems that perhaps a small number of children at still going | :03:00. | :03:03.
to Little Joe's Day Nursery or Heworth House Day Nursery, at any | :03:03. | :03:06.
parents presented to speak to, said they did not want to be interviewed | :03:06. | :03:13.
at all, or said they did not understand what the nature of the | :03:13. | :03:18.
accusations are, or who has made these accusations. Those arrested | :03:18. | :03:24.
have been extended on police bail until next month. The danger that | :03:24. | :03:27.
herds of cattle can pose has been highlighted, after a woman was | :03:27. | :03:31.
tossed into the air by a cow, on a rambling holiday in North Yorkshire. | :03:31. | :03:34.
Irene Pitham was walking through a field in Nidderdale earlier this | :03:34. | :03:38.
year, when the animal turned on her. Irene was rescued by Yorkshire Air | :03:38. | :03:41.
Ambulance, and the drama was caught on film by the BBC's Helicopter | :03:41. | :03:45.
Heroes production team who are based here in Leeds. The story will | :03:45. | :03:48.
be shown on BBC1 on Monday morning. Our reporter Spencer Stokes has | :03:48. | :03:58.
:03:58. | :03:58. | ||
been taking a look. A woman is lying on her back in a | :03:58. | :04:03.
Nidderdale field, thrown into the air by a cow. The Yorkshire Air | :04:03. | :04:06.
Ambulance has been scrambled and, within minutes, it will be touching | :04:06. | :04:13.
down. The herd of cattle is still yards away. We were walking across | :04:13. | :04:18.
the field, and the cows with their young ones came towards us. They | :04:18. | :04:22.
seemed to ease back, then one round boards and put his nose underneath | :04:22. | :04:26.
my wife and flipped her into the air. She went right over the top | :04:26. | :04:30.
and hit the ground. There is potential for head and internal | :04:30. | :04:35.
injuries. Less than 15 minutes after the initial emergency call, | :04:35. | :04:40.
the helicopter and paramedics are one seemed. How much pain are you | :04:40. | :04:46.
win? A good half-ton of an angry beefburger is dangerous. Many | :04:46. | :04:52.
people are injured or killed, and especially if you have a dog with | :04:52. | :04:57.
you. The advice is, in that situation, you let your dog go. The | :04:57. | :05:00.
injuries are assessed and it becomes clear they are not life- | :05:00. | :05:04.
threatening. One of the team tried to keep her spirits up with some | :05:04. | :05:10.
humour. When you get home, get your own back by having a stake! Irene | :05:10. | :05:16.
is removed into the helicopter before being flown to Harrogate | :05:16. | :05:22.
hospital. I was very calm until I got back here. Then it was day-case | :05:22. | :05:28.
of, as opposed, emotion. The feeling I had was total panic that | :05:28. | :05:32.
she had actually died. I thought they had killed her. She went up so | :05:32. | :05:38.
high, then hit the ground and didn't move at all. Irene suffered | :05:38. | :05:43.
little more than serious concussion but it shows docks, cattle and | :05:43. | :05:47.
ramblers do not always mix. The new series of Helicopter Heroes | :05:47. | :05:51.
returns to our screens on Monday at 9.15am on BBC1, with a chance to | :05:51. | :05:59.
hear from Irene following her Stay with us, for a salutory lesson. | :05:59. | :06:02.
The deep vein thrombosis which killed a young man who spent too | :06:02. | :06:11.
A number of fire stations across West Yorkshire could close, as part | :06:11. | :06:15.
of proposals to save millions of pounds. Jobs will also go. The Fire | :06:15. | :06:18.
Service stands to lose up to 18 million in government grants over | :06:18. | :06:23.
the next four years. The public now has 12 weeks to give its views on | :06:23. | :06:30.
the proposals. Ian White has the details. | :06:30. | :06:33.
If these changes are approved, they could start coming into effect from | :06:33. | :06:38.
April 2012. Under the plans, ten fire stations would close and be | :06:39. | :06:44.
replaced by five newer and more modern ones at Menson, Rastrick. At | :06:44. | :06:48.
Batley, Killingbeck and South Kirby. More than 100 fire fighters could | :06:48. | :06:52.
lose their jobs, but there will be no compulsory redundancies. No-one | :06:52. | :06:56.
will be forced to leave their job. There would also be changes to | :06:56. | :07:00.
shift patterns. This has been controversial in the past. But the | :07:00. | :07:08.
Fire Service says it needs staff to work more flexibly. | :07:08. | :07:12.
More than another call up for fire fighters. This time is not for real, | :07:12. | :07:16.
but a training exercise. The station is one of West Yorkshire's | :07:16. | :07:21.
newest. These modern stations are what the fired Service wants to see | :07:21. | :07:26.
in future but, with five larger stations replacing 10 old ones. It | :07:26. | :07:32.
is about saving money. The five areas earmarked for change will | :07:32. | :07:39.
benefit from a huge investment by the fire authority, millions of | :07:39. | :07:42.
pounds of investment in infrastructure which will serve the | :07:42. | :07:48.
communities well, right into the next decade. This fire station is | :07:48. | :07:52.
one of the 10 which faces closure. Under the proposals, it could | :07:52. | :07:55.
actually closed down and be replaced by a new facility three | :07:55. | :08:03.
miles away. If they will close these two, so we have heard. But | :08:03. | :08:08.
they still have the same two areas to cover. They're going to move it | :08:08. | :08:14.
into one that station. No, I think it is too big a distance. You need | :08:14. | :08:19.
to get there quickly. Now it is further away. More damage, more | :08:19. | :08:25.
injuries. More than 100 fire fighter posts will go through | :08:25. | :08:29.
natural wastage. Retirement could be delayed until the age of 60. | :08:29. | :08:34.
Unions say they recognise the need to modernise the service. The fire | :08:34. | :08:38.
stations do reflect a West Yorkshire of some years ago by dint | :08:38. | :08:42.
of the age of the stations. So some stations may be possible. But not | :08:42. | :08:46.
all the changes are appropriate. Once we have looked at the | :08:46. | :08:53.
proposals in detail, will make our views known. The 4 million a year | :08:53. | :09:00.
could be saved if these changes go ahead. 12 weeks remain for you to | :09:00. | :09:05.
tell the fires or -- the fire of it is what you think. A 24-year-old | :09:05. | :09:08.
man's been arrested on suspicion of murder, after a 34-year-old woman | :09:09. | :09:12.
was found dead at a house on Claywood Road in Sheffield. A post | :09:12. | :09:14.
mortem examination's due to take place shortly. | :09:14. | :09:17.
An 85-year-old World War Two veteran, who was jailed for six | :09:17. | :09:21.
months in July for recording court proceedings, has been freed by the | :09:21. | :09:23.
Court of Appeal. Norman Scarth, from Bradford, was jailed for | :09:23. | :09:27.
contempt of court. He'd used an audio device hidden in a pen to | :09:27. | :09:32.
record what was said. Plans for an inland port at | :09:32. | :09:35.
Rossington in Doncaster have been given the go-ahead. A rail freight | :09:35. | :09:39.
terminal will be built served by rail and road, and there's a | :09:39. | :09:43.
planned link road to Junction 3 of the M18. Over 5,000 jobs could be | :09:43. | :09:46.
created. Disabled workers across Yorkshire | :09:47. | :09:50.
have been told by Unions that all five of the region's Remploy | :09:50. | :09:52.
factories could close a year earlier than expected. Government | :09:52. | :09:56.
subsidies were due to end in 2013, but unions now say the subsidy will | :09:56. | :09:59.
be stopped earlier. The Department of Work and Pensions say their | :09:59. | :10:02.
plans haven't changed and will issue a statement in the coming | :10:03. | :10:08.
weeks. South Yorkshire's Police Authority | :10:08. | :10:11.
says it wants more information before it decides to join a new | :10:11. | :10:15.
National Police Air Service. They say they need more time to make a | :10:15. | :10:18.
final decision. If they do decide to join the new national service, | :10:18. | :10:23.
South Yorkshire Police will lose its helicopter. | :10:23. | :10:27.
The Green Party says its conference in Sheffield this weekend could be | :10:27. | :10:30.
their biggest ever. More than 800 delegates are expected with the | :10:30. | :10:32.
party billing itself as an alternative to the Liberal | :10:32. | :10:40.
A bereaved father from Sheffield has launched a website to raise | :10:40. | :10:43.
awareness about the health risks associated with playing hours of | :10:43. | :10:46.
computer games. David Staniforth's son Chris was just 20 when he died | :10:46. | :10:49.
three months ago from deep vein thrombosis. His family believe it | :10:49. | :10:59.
was caused by hours spent gaming. Here's our health correspondent, | :10:59. | :11:09.
:11:09. | :11:22. | ||
The and I decided to call this website. It really is the message. | :11:22. | :11:26.
The message is not to their games. Enjoy them but be aware of what can | :11:26. | :11:30.
happen. Chris Staniforth was dedicated to computer games, his | :11:31. | :11:36.
hobby could have become his career. He'd just been accepted on the | :11:36. | :11:40.
University design course. In May, at the age of 20, he died from deep | :11:40. | :11:46.
vein thrombosis. He spent up to 20 hours at a time on his ex-boss. He | :11:47. | :11:52.
had experienced chest pains in the night. He collapsed and died. | :11:52. | :11:55.
of his international friends made through gaining have made a video | :11:55. | :12:03.
for the website. It was awful. Being a parent, being a dad, you | :12:03. | :12:08.
are always try to do something for your children, helped them out. But, | :12:08. | :12:14.
you just can't do anything. Doing this website and the campaign has | :12:14. | :12:19.
been a way of honouring him I suppose. Those most at risk have | :12:19. | :12:23.
been the elderly, hospital patients and passengers on long-haul flights. | :12:23. | :12:29.
But, every year, 20 younger people die from deep vein thrombosis. In | :12:29. | :12:35.
2001, there were 13 deaths in men under 30. Last year, there were 21 | :12:35. | :12:41.
deaths. One in 1000 people each year do get a blood clot in their | :12:41. | :12:45.
late or lungs. The message as a result of this case is we are | :12:45. | :12:50.
becoming increasingly sedentary, playing games, in front of the | :12:50. | :12:55.
computer. We must take a break, walk about. That will significantly | :12:55. | :13:00.
reduce the risk. David has asked for a meeting with the gaming | :13:00. | :13:04.
industry to see if warning signs can appear in games to remind | :13:04. | :13:09.
players to take a break. The industry also is urging gamers to | :13:09. | :13:15.
take time out. We would advise all of our customers to take regular | :13:15. | :13:19.
breaks from the screen, get up and walk around every 45 minutes. Take | :13:19. | :13:25.
five minutes out. You will enjoy your games far more. And a reminder | :13:25. | :13:29.
to parents, there are parental controls on all consols to limit | :13:29. | :13:39.
:13:39. | :13:45. | ||
We were just talking about that. I have got an eight year old son. He | :13:45. | :13:49.
plays on his computer games night and day and we have to ration that. | :13:49. | :13:57.
It is a real warning. Stay with us before 7 o'clock. We are looking | :13:57. | :14:03.
ahead to the weekend's sport. Castleford have to defeat Hull to | :14:03. | :14:13.
:14:13. | :14:17. | ||
secured a place in the play-offs. Revenge! Find out what Paul is | :14:17. | :14:27.
:14:27. | :14:32. | ||
That cheered me up! Forget about the forecast. Sunshine has broken | :14:32. | :14:39.
out above West Yorkshire! We are talking to Paul in about five | :14:39. | :14:47.
minutes. We hope he has not disappeared into a black hole. | :14:47. | :14:53.
night we were reflecting on John Kear's time as coach but we are | :14:53. | :14:59.
looking at his successor, Richard Agar. He is currently in charge of | :14:59. | :15:04.
Hull FC. He has signed a three-year deal. John Kear steps down after | :15:04. | :15:12.
tonight's match against Bradford. Halifax upset the formbook to win | :15:12. | :15:17.
32-22 at Batley and the play-off eliminator. They play be one of | :15:17. | :15:23.
Sheffield and Widnes Vikings. After a difficult season, Castleford | :15:23. | :15:27.
understand they must defeat Hull to get a spot in the play-offs. It is | :15:27. | :15:34.
the final round of matches and could be the last match in the team | :15:34. | :15:38.
for Terry Matterson. He returns for Terry Matterson. He returns | :15:38. | :15:42.
for Terry Matterson. He returns down under after the season. It is | :15:42. | :15:45.
another 95 yards sizzling effort! another 95 yards sizzling effort! | :15:45. | :15:50.
It might have got them the game will stop he started the season --. | :15:50. | :15:56.
He started the season brilliantly and it comes down to one games. | :15:56. | :16:03.
are not bouncing around the bottom of the table. We should have made | :16:03. | :16:06.
the top eight a bit earlier but we have got reasons because of | :16:06. | :16:10.
injuries but we have not got any more chances. We must get the job | :16:10. | :16:16.
finished. For if we did not make it up the final hurdle, it will be a | :16:17. | :16:26.
:16:27. | :16:27. | ||
big let-down. We are in a good position. That is it! Castleford | :16:27. | :16:33.
will go down! He has experienced ups and down in his six years at | :16:33. | :16:40.
the club. They have come a long way in that time. It was the back end | :16:40. | :16:45.
of November and we had got 13 players on a rainy day. I thought, | :16:45. | :16:51.
oh my goodness, what have I done? But we are on the edge of the top | :16:51. | :16:57.
eight every year. 7th, 8th and 9th in the past 18 years. I think that | :16:57. | :17:05.
is progress. Plenty has changed in the team. We have improved. We have | :17:05. | :17:10.
got a better side. He might be going home at the end of the season | :17:10. | :17:17.
but he is not ready to depart just yet. We are training a week on week | :17:17. | :17:22.
and is very hard but I am not packing it in yet. We wish them the | :17:22. | :17:27.
very best. It is not looking good for Yorkshire in the cricket | :17:27. | :17:33.
against relegation. They resumed on 20 without loss but have got just | :17:33. | :17:41.
195 and 80 not have a batting bonus point. Somerset in reply, 100 24-6. | :17:41. | :17:51.
:17:51. | :17:52. | ||
Four wickets for Ryan Sidebottom. - - 124-6. I think they had virtually | :17:52. | :17:56.
said that they were resigned to relegation. They need a | :17:56. | :18:01.
mathematical miracle. They are basically down. They are basically | :18:01. | :18:07.
down. They did have a few bright spots but they will be disappointed. | :18:07. | :18:11.
When will we be put out of our misery? It will carry on because | :18:11. | :18:16.
they have actually got a game in hand. But I think we all know what | :18:16. | :18:23.
is happening! Martyn Moxon has been pulling his hair out and is getting | :18:23. | :18:31.
very stressed. The World Superbike champion James Toseland has been | :18:31. | :18:37.
forced to retire because of a wrist injury. The 31-year-old got the | :18:37. | :18:43.
title in 2004 and 2007 are. He got the injury in March when he crashed | :18:43. | :18:49.
out in test in. He has been advised the damage cannot be repaired. The | :18:49. | :18:54.
Sheffield Steelers are at home in ice hockey against Dundee. Dundee | :18:54. | :18:57.
are the first to step into the "House of Steel" against the | :18:57. | :19:03.
defending champions. The Sheffield Steelers coach is excited about his | :19:03. | :19:09.
new look team. We have got a fantastic squad and I think it is a | :19:09. | :19:13.
bit more exciting for the supporters because of the stadium. | :19:13. | :19:19.
We have got a big win in Belfast under our belts. I am prepared the | :19:19. | :19:26.
supporters will be up for this. -- coping. The world cycling | :19:26. | :19:33.
championships in Denmark, we have got a medal for David Stone. He had | :19:33. | :19:40.
a really bad crash a few weeks ago. Very well done to him. It was awful, | :19:40. | :19:48.
wasn't it? Very well done to him. wonder if we have got him back? I | :19:48. | :19:51.
hope we have got all we will struggle with the forecast. We will | :19:51. | :19:58.
make it up like he does! Scientists are riding in Bradford 40 annual | :19:58. | :20:03.
British Science Festival. It is 100 years since it was in Bradford and | :20:03. | :20:08.
it is the biggest festival of its kind in Europe. It has got cutting- | :20:08. | :20:11.
edge science and technology and plenty of free events for people of | :20:11. | :20:18.
all ages. Here is our correspondent. He is our resident scientist. Can | :20:18. | :20:26.
we call him that? Are you back down to earth, Paul? I thought you might | :20:26. | :20:32.
enjoy that right up. As a physicist and a weather forecaster, somebody | :20:33. | :20:38.
bat has been mickey-taking out of him, this is very exciting. We are | :20:38. | :20:44.
lucky to have these British Science Festival. 50,000 visitors are | :20:44. | :20:50.
expected in the next 18 days. A great boost for the local economy. | :20:50. | :20:54.
We have got Liz Bonnin from Bang Goes The Theory with us tonight. | :20:55. | :21:01.
What are we doing tonight? We are bringing Bang Goes The Theory on | :21:01. | :21:08.
the road. We are in Bradford and at St George's Hall doing the live | :21:08. | :21:12.
version of the programme. People are taking part in scientific | :21:12. | :21:19.
experiments. We have got Dr Yan Wong with his dance laboratory as | :21:19. | :21:25.
well. It must be fun because you are a biochemist. It must be great | :21:25. | :21:30.
to do this on television. It is like a dream come true. We have a | :21:30. | :21:38.
great time, especially on the road. It is really funny. Calm down. | :21:38. | :21:45.
are experimenting in a few moments. It is totally going to work. Take a | :21:45. | :21:52.
look at this. What I am doing is an intense region of low pressure. I | :21:52. | :21:56.
am using bees and vacuum cleaning ballads. We have got standard | :21:56. | :22:05.
pressure of. -- a vacuum cleaning devices. I am not flying out of the | :22:05. | :22:15.
:22:15. | :22:18. | ||
top or anything? They will be a loving this back in the studio. | :22:18. | :22:26.
does it feel up there? It is an incredible force. It should be | :22:27. | :22:32.
about 800 and pressure. It feels like that as well. -- 800 pressure | :22:32. | :22:42.
:22:42. | :22:43. | ||
up. I actually feel like I am in an area of high pressure. If you come | :22:43. | :22:48.
down to Bradford, you can take part in that as well. We would enjoy a | :22:48. | :22:58.
:22:58. | :22:59. | ||
you getting up there. -- you. I am joined by Liz Bonnin, Dallas | :22:59. | :23:04.
Campbell and Jem Stansfield. This is an experiment that is all to do | :23:04. | :23:11.
with global warming and climate change. Show us what you are doing. | :23:11. | :23:18.
This is our resident problem solder on the programme. It is about cows | :23:18. | :23:22.
releasing too much methane and creating global warming. We are | :23:22. | :23:28.
trying to get rid of some of that the fame. He has got a milk churn | :23:28. | :23:31.
with something growing out of that and we have got a better to be | :23:31. | :23:41.
madness. -- method to the madness. The best thing to do is to set | :23:41. | :23:48.
light to that. We are fighting climate change with our bare hands. | :23:48. | :23:56.
In it is like a candle in the wind. Oh my gosh. That was a bit big. | :23:56. | :24:01.
Interesting for the purposes of television. That is what we do on | :24:01. | :24:04.
Bang Goes The Theory it. Check it out. We do not normally make it | :24:04. | :24:11.
that big! This is good for climate change. You have created a debate | :24:11. | :24:19.
over which is very powerful and like the time. -- vapour. | :24:19. | :24:26.
condenses before getting back up into the atmosphere. Get a job as a | :24:26. | :24:31.
forecaster. That was fantastic. If you would like to get down to | :24:31. | :24:36.
Bradford, it is worth a visit. BBC leads are here between 10 o'clock | :24:36. | :24:45.
and 2pm tomorrow. -- BBC Radio Leeds. Just 20 seconds all we are | :24:45. | :24:52.
going to do it again bus-stop what is the highlight --. What is the | :24:52. | :25:00.
highlight? We are going to be playing Call My Bluff as well. | :25:00. | :25:09.
a go at that if she would like to pit your wits against us. Back to | :25:09. | :25:17.
the studio it. Can you actually hear us? I can hear you now. | :25:17. | :25:23.
thought my eardrums would explode and that we could not hit you again. | :25:23. | :25:33.
:25:33. | :25:39. | ||
-- listen to you again bus-stop --. Was that Centenary Square? That was | :25:39. | :25:44.
a basic vacuum. Imagine if you had got a more powerful one. You would | :25:44. | :25:51.
be moving very quickly. We have got a very important forecast among | :25:51. | :25:58.
this hilarity. We have been talking about the hurricane but is a former | :25:58. | :26:08.
:26:08. | :26:08. | ||
Hurricane. It might change course. It is at about 60 or positively 70 | :26:08. | :26:17.
-- or possibly 70 mph. The latest on Sunday. We have got the graphic | :26:17. | :26:21.
on Sunday. We have got the graphic for tonight. It has been quite nice. | :26:21. | :26:26.
We have got a chance of showers pushing up from the south in the | :26:26. | :26:32.
next few hours. We have got a warm front from the West bringing rain | :26:32. | :26:38.
and drizzle. These are the temperatures. Temperatures at 16 | :26:38. | :26:45.
degrees. 61 Fahrenheit. It is a damp start again tomorrow. The rain | :26:45. | :26:50.
gradually disappearing. On the Pennines, it is a disappointing | :26:50. | :26:57.
morning. Rain coming from the West in the latter stages of the morning. | :26:57. | :27:03.
But then it disappears from the West by the middle of the afternoon. | :27:03. | :27:09.
Sunshine by the end of the day. Temperatures at 22 degrees. | :27:09. | :27:17.
Moderate and fresh wind. Some sunshine and a bit of rain tomorrow. | :27:17. | :27:23.
Bright and windy tomorrow with a scattering of showers. Sunday night, | :27:23. | :27:29.
a risk of gale-force wind. Stay tuned to local stations. Get down | :27:29. | :27:35. |
