Hello. Welcome to Wednesday's Look North. Tonight, the right to stand | :00:08. | :00:13.
and watch football. Should German-style terraces be | :00:13. | :00:19.
introduced here? One campaigner who was at the Hillsborough disaster, | :00:19. | :00:24.
says definitely not. A war veteran's precious memories - we | :00:24. | :00:30.
speak to the soldier who lost both his legs in Afghanistan and has had | :00:31. | :00:38.
his prize possessions stolen by burglars. I fight for and my own | :00:38. | :00:42.
people, but the only thing I've got, this is the only thing I've got. | :00:42. | :00:47.
And the tree of life. The latest David Hockney creation is unveiled | :00:47. | :00:54.
at a new exhibition in Saltaire. The Sheffield skyline was cloudy | :00:54. | :01:00.
when these shots were taken. More sunshine to come tomorrow. All the | :01:00. | :01:10.
:01:10. | :01:11. | ||
details coming up. Hello, good evening. Tonight, a | :01:11. | :01:16.
football fan who witnessed the Hillsborough disaster has been in | :01:16. | :01:20.
Westminster trying to persuade MPs not to bring back standing at top- | :01:21. | :01:26.
flight matches. Barbara King, who lives in | :01:26. | :01:36.
:01:36. | :01:36. | ||
Eckington, says reintroducing The dreadful images that shocked | :01:36. | :01:45.
the world and changed English football. 96 Liverpool fans died at | :01:45. | :01:50.
Hillsborough. As a direct result of the disaster at Sheffield | :01:50. | :01:55.
Wednesday's grounds terraces was banned in the top two leagues and | :01:55. | :02:05.
:02:05. | :02:07. | ||
all seater stands were introduced. It has caused controversy, | :02:07. | :02:14.
especially among those who were at Hillsborough,. Football is a family | :02:14. | :02:19.
thing. That is how it needs to stay, a family occasion, where we can go | :02:19. | :02:25.
out and enjoy a decent football game, and not having to worry about | :02:25. | :02:31.
being hurt. It is the football supporters' federation which is | :02:31. | :02:36.
pushing terraceing. Standing is allowed in the German league | :02:36. | :02:42.
address barriers are installed between rows to stop surges. The | :02:42. | :02:46.
FSF is not alone. Don foster is in favour of standing | :02:46. | :02:50.
and is trying to get a Bill through Parliament to give clubs the option | :02:50. | :02:54.
of bringing it back. What we are proposing is a system whereby you | :02:54. | :02:57.
have a safe standing, it means every single person will have a | :02:57. | :03:03.
barrier in front of him or her. There'll be a drop-down seat. | :03:03. | :03:08.
Barbara met the MP to discuss the issue. She was not convinced by his | :03:08. | :03:15.
argument. Don foster is on about passing it on to safety officers to | :03:15. | :03:20.
work on it. He has not seen it for himself. They should not pass the | :03:20. | :03:24.
buck. I would like to be involved because I was there at Hillsborough | :03:24. | :03:29.
when it happened. The Government says it is not supporting the Bill | :03:29. | :03:33.
and the prep year league and FA say they are happy with things the way | :03:33. | :03:36.
they are. With the parliamentary committee set to debate terraceing | :03:36. | :03:42.
next year, the issue is not likely to go away. | :03:42. | :03:46.
Martin O'Hara is with us from the Football Supporters' Federation. | :03:47. | :03:51.
You are in the Sheffield office, not far from where the awful event | :03:51. | :03:55.
happened. Why do you want to stand again? It is not a case of why I | :03:55. | :04:01.
want to stand again. At every single football match in the | :04:01. | :04:06.
country people are standing. They have been standing for the past 0 | :04:06. | :04:09.
years. Lord Justice Taylor said we would get used sitting in the seats | :04:09. | :04:13.
and enjoy football from there. Unfortunately, that has not | :04:13. | :04:18.
happened. People are still continuing to stand all the time. | :04:18. | :04:19.
Can you understand why it is such an emotive issue, especially in | :04:19. | :04:25.
this part of the world. Trevor Hicks from the Hillsborough | :04:25. | :04:30.
Family Support Group says, "there is no case for it. It is a step | :04:30. | :04:34.
backwards." What you have to remember is Lord Justice Taylor did | :04:34. | :04:40.
not say that standing caused any of the Hillsborough tragedy at all. He | :04:40. | :04:44.
focused on policing and poor stadium design and those were the | :04:44. | :04:49.
issues for Lord Justice Taylor, not standing. So, we have standing | :04:49. | :04:53.
today. We still have it. We have knit the two lower divisions. We | :04:53. | :04:57.
don't have it in the upper two divisions, although people do stand. | :04:57. | :05:01.
What you have to understand from there is if you look at the safety | :05:01. | :05:05.
figures there's no difference between the safety figures produced | :05:05. | :05:08.
for standing at a football ground and sitting at a football ground. | :05:08. | :05:13.
The FLA and the police accept there is no difference in safety | :05:14. | :05:18.
standards whatsoever. The football league and Premier League say all- | :05:19. | :05:26.
seating staid ya has made the game a more family-orientated sport. If | :05:26. | :05:31.
we had standing would that make it less so? I don't understand that | :05:31. | :05:36.
argument either. Nobody is suching we go from all siting to all | :05:36. | :05:40.
standing. What we are suggesting is we have standing areas for people | :05:40. | :05:45.
who want to stand. Women and children can still sit at football | :05:45. | :05:48.
grounds. We don't suggest they have to go into standing areas. If you | :05:48. | :05:52.
stand outside any stadium in this country which still has standing | :05:52. | :05:55.
areas, you will see women and children entering those standing | :05:55. | :05:58.
areas. They are making the choice to go in there any way. | :05:58. | :06:02.
We will have to leave it there. Thanks for joining us this evening. | :06:02. | :06:06.
As ever, we would like to hear your views. Also tonight, police in | :06:06. | :06:12.
Leeds are asking for help from the city's criminals to help track down | :06:12. | :06:19.
a gang of thieves who broke into a -- an injured soldier's home. | :06:19. | :06:24.
Lee Midgley stepped on a landmine, when he lost both his legs. In | :06:24. | :06:28.
January last year Lee Midgley's life changed forever. He stepped on | :06:28. | :06:32.
a mine while serving in Afghanistan. He suffered horrific injuries. On | :06:32. | :06:36.
Monday, he returned home from a shopping trip with his fiance to | :06:36. | :06:42.
find their house had been broken into. DVDs were taken, a camera and | :06:42. | :06:45.
sentimental things like pictures from Afghanistan and his military | :06:45. | :06:54.
dog tags. It makes me remember who I used to be. I was fit, fit. I | :06:54. | :07:00.
could go anywhere and it's been taken. It's put so much stress on | :07:00. | :07:09.
me. I have so much any way that's bad and wrong. Police say they | :07:09. | :07:12.
believe people in Leeds's criminal community will know who is | :07:12. | :07:16.
responsible. They are asking for their help. The answer for this | :07:16. | :07:20.
crime lies with them. They should do the right thing and search their | :07:20. | :07:24.
conscience. You know who's responsible. You have to soul- | :07:24. | :07:29.
search and do the right thing. did I go over and fight for, to | :07:29. | :07:34.
come back home and my own people rob and take what, the only thing | :07:34. | :07:41.
I've got. It's the only thing I've got. I was a big, strong lad. I | :07:41. | :07:46.
used to be able to defend myself. But now I feel vulnerable. I feel | :07:46. | :07:51.
like I can't even protect my own girlfriend, which is my world. I | :07:51. | :07:57.
love her to bits. I feel I can't even protect her. What can I do? | :07:57. | :08:01.
Can't do nothing! That's been took away from me. Now they have come | :08:01. | :08:11.
:08:11. | :08:12. | ||
and took this away from me. Lee Midgley. It is awful. Let's | :08:12. | :08:16.
hope he can get those stolen possessions back. Stay with us. We | :08:17. | :08:20.
have more tonight, including fascinating science in Bradford. | :08:20. | :08:25.
Come in Amanda. About lutely, lots to see and do | :08:25. | :08:30.
here in Bradford, from tantalising your taste buds to the laws of | :08:30. | :08:36.
attraction. Join us later from the Festival of Science. Thank you. | :08:36. | :08:40.
More news from around Yorkshire. Staff working at two York nurseries | :08:40. | :08:43.
which are under investigation say the allegations came out of the | :08:43. | :08:49.
blue, and they still don't know what they are. The parents of | :08:49. | :08:52.
children at how worth House were given letters by the owner, Lynn | :08:53. | :08:56.
Drydal. It said allegations had been made against a number of staff | :08:57. | :09:01.
concerning the quality of care and welfare of children. Yorkshire | :09:01. | :09:06.
Police and the council say they do not relate to sexual abuse. | :09:06. | :09:09.
open is these outstanding investigations, enquiries can be | :09:09. | :09:14.
dealt with as soon as possible and we can know what the issues are, so | :09:14. | :09:20.
that we can put parents' minds at ease. The authorities have to go | :09:20. | :09:23.
through due process, but that creates that period of uncertainty. | :09:23. | :09:29.
I think, unfortunately, it creates additional anxiety for Lynn, as | :09:29. | :09:39.
:09:39. | :09:40. | ||
much as anything, obviously the parents and the staff and the | :09:40. | :09:45.
children. There are 243,000 jobless in | :09:45. | :09:52.
Yorkshire and the Humber. That is a rise of 6,000. The unemployment | :09:52. | :09:58.
rate stands at.1%, the same as this -- 9.1%. The same as this time last | :09:58. | :10:05.
year. Vaubg vaubg vaubg says walking the -- Michael Vaughan says | :10:05. | :10:11.
walking the Great Wall of China will be a triumph of. He has a | :10:11. | :10:18.
dodgy knee, like me. He is rising money for hospital. | :10:18. | :10:22.
His own daughter is a patient. have been in Sheffield for 27 years. | :10:22. | :10:26.
My wife worked in a hospital. We had our three kids all in this | :10:26. | :10:30.
hospital. I have always been close to kids. I have a Cricket Academy | :10:30. | :10:33.
in Sheffield as well. I want to make sure that the hospital stays | :10:33. | :10:37.
as it has been for the time I've been growing up. The three kids | :10:37. | :10:41.
we've had were treated remarkably well. We are very fortunate that | :10:41. | :10:45.
all three of our kids have been very healthy. Today we are here | :10:45. | :10:49.
because my eldest has had her tonsils out. I've been here all | :10:49. | :10:53.
morning. It's been a great hospital in terms of what they gave us. I | :10:53. | :10:57.
wanted to give something back. I wanted to choose a charity, | :10:57. | :11:01.
particularly when I finish playing and donate time and try and make a | :11:01. | :11:04.
difference. You get involved in so many things without really making a | :11:04. | :11:08.
difference. I thought I want to help this hospital as much as I can | :11:08. | :11:11.
and raise as much awareness, profile and ultimately money to | :11:12. | :11:17.
make sure that it stays to the standard it has for many years. | :11:17. | :11:21.
100,000 already in, target 250,000. So it's going well. How | :11:21. | :11:26.
is the training then? Training has been walking the dogs every now and | :11:26. | :11:30.
again. I have been busy with the cricket, so I'm hoping the knee | :11:30. | :11:35.
will stand the wall of China. I have been delighted with everyone's | :11:35. | :11:38.
response, particularly around Sheffield. Obviously mates as well, | :11:38. | :11:43.
who backed us. There's plenty more money to be raised. If anyone feels | :11:43. | :11:49.
they can doate anything, we do appreciate it. The figure is | :11:49. | :11:54.
20250,000. It is a lot of money. We have got to 100,000. Hopefully | :11:54. | :12:00.
we can get there in the next few weeks. How is your little girl? | :12:00. | :12:03.
has some ice cream. It is a healer for the tonsils out. She is up and | :12:03. | :12:07.
around. They do a great job here. They looked after her. When I had | :12:07. | :12:11.
my tonsils out many years ago I can't remember laughing before the | :12:11. | :12:14.
operation. They managed to make her laugh before she went in. | :12:14. | :12:22.
Thanks. Thanks. Bless him! Honestly a good | :12:22. | :12:28.
cause. Sheffield children's hospital, great wall of hospital. | :12:28. | :12:36.
A round up of last night's football action, including the Yorkshire | :12:36. | :12:38.
Derby where Huddersfield Town came out winners. | :12:38. | :12:45.
The David Hockney portraits, part of his latest exhibition in | :12:45. | :12:52.
Saltaire. I love David Hockney. I can't wait | :12:53. | :12:58.
for that shall we stay in Bradford? The week of scientific debates has | :12:58. | :13:01.
been continuing today at the British Science Festival, where | :13:01. | :13:11.
:13:11. | :13:15. | ||
Now me and you are going to be guinea pigs ago -- again. It's all | :13:15. | :13:25.
:13:25. | :13:27. | ||
about the science of the senses. What is it supposed to taste like? | :13:27. | :13:36.
It depends on your genetic make-up. What does it taste like? Anything? | :13:36. | :13:43.
I think it tastes a bit like an aspirin. What do you think? It is a | :13:43. | :13:53.
:13:53. | :13:54. | ||
bit like that. It's bouquet. What does that make me? I'm not entirely | :13:54. | :14:02.
sure! It is amazing how much information you can glean from a | :14:02. | :14:06.
little piece of paper like this. There is a man here who can tell me | :14:06. | :14:12.
all about the signs of taste. Our presenters in the studio tonight | :14:12. | :14:17.
said they could taste aspirin, what does that mean? How well you can | :14:17. | :14:27.
taste is genetically determined to a large extent. There is a chemical, | :14:27. | :14:31.
if you get a mild bitter taste from it, it means you have one copy of | :14:31. | :14:37.
this gene, which is the same with the majority of the population. | :14:38. | :14:44.
Normal taste, I'm afraid. Before we go any further, I have to ask you | :14:44. | :14:49.
about your make-up. What exactly is it? This is to explain how the | :14:50. | :14:59.
sense of taste works. They have been testing the basic tastes. But | :14:59. | :15:08.
for every other flavour that you know, you need your nose as well. | :15:08. | :15:18.
You get an air movement to your nose -- nasal cavity. We must move | :15:18. | :15:25.
on because this doctor is going to tell us all about the laws of | :15:25. | :15:29.
attraction. Yes, there are various traits that come up again enter | :15:29. | :15:38.
again. Things like facial symmetry, masculinity or femininity. There is | :15:38. | :15:43.
lots to see and do here. This is a little experiment which you can | :15:43. | :15:48.
take part in this evening if you come along. I can have my picture | :15:48. | :15:56.
taken just like that... Cheese! Any minute now, something hideous will | :15:56. | :16:04.
happen. One minute, a radiant beauty, and the next, the face of a | :16:04. | :16:09.
chimp! Unbelievable! Come and try it yourself if you're brave enough. | :16:09. | :16:19.
:16:19. | :16:21. | ||
It goes on till 10pm this evening. Apparently, your average. Thank you | :16:21. | :16:29.
is so much! I think the laws of attraction is the man with a husky | :16:29. | :16:39.
:16:39. | :16:41. | ||
voice! I think he has been charting. -- shouting. I am told it is a | :16:41. | :16:51.
:16:51. | :17:00. | ||
severe case of man through. -- flu. Our Championship teams had the | :17:00. | :17:03.
night off, leagues one and two produced some important results | :17:03. | :17:05.
last night. But our two big Sheffield clubs are probably | :17:05. | :17:10.
wishing they hadn't bothered now. Such a one-sided derby. The triumph | :17:10. | :17:20.
:17:20. | :17:24. | ||
was very much on town's side. Early chances went on taken. Sheer muscle | :17:24. | :17:29.
power made it three-L the Huddersfield before half-time. A | :17:29. | :17:39.
:17:39. | :17:47. | ||
score the second half but the town's first away win. It became | :17:47. | :17:57.
five-nil to Stevenage before some pride was restored. By contrast, | :17:57. | :18:02.
the lookout for Chesterfield fans with the spring in their step after | :18:02. | :18:12.
:18:12. | :18:19. | ||
his second win. -- a second wind. A late free-kick brought in the | :18:19. | :18:29.
:18:29. | :18:29. | ||
equaliser and Rotherham's single point keeps them in place. | :18:29. | :18:37.
Equalisers through terrific strikes. The home side grabbed the call | :18:37. | :18:44.
winner, leaving Bradford 22nd in the league table. In Rugby League, | :18:44. | :18:48.
it's less than a week since his last game in charge of Wakefield | :18:48. | :18:51.
Wildcats and John Kear has already found a new job. He was introduced | :18:51. | :18:54.
this morning as the new coach of Championship side Batley Bulldogs. | :18:54. | :18:58.
It's Kear's first part-time job in more than 20 years and he says it's | :18:58. | :19:01.
a new challenge that will also give him more time for life outside of | :19:01. | :19:09.
Rugby League. I wanted to coach because I love coaching. This | :19:09. | :19:15.
allows me to do that and also explore different avenues. It is a | :19:15. | :19:22.
full-time demand, I can have a look round and see what is out in the | :19:22. | :19:32.
:19:32. | :19:33. | ||
world. Now motorsport, and in trials riding, this weekend it's | :19:33. | :19:36.
the world team championships in in Italy. And for the first time in | :19:36. | :19:39.
history, the Great Britain team, from manager through to all four | :19:39. | :19:41.
riders, are Yorkshiremen. This is the Great Britain trials team who | :19:42. | :19:45.
are set to take on the World This weekend. For the first time in the | :19:45. | :19:49.
history of the team competition, all four riders and even the | :19:50. | :19:53.
manager of from Yorkshire, representing Selston, Leeds and | :19:53. | :20:00.
Scarborough. Trials riding is not a motor sport associated with speed. | :20:00. | :20:03.
This sport demands balance, technique and control to navigate | :20:03. | :20:11.
the bike over challenging obstacles without putting a foot wrong. | :20:11. | :20:21.
:20:21. | :20:23. | ||
you ride over obstacles and you don't put feet down, but if you put | :20:23. | :20:29.
them down you are out. The trial has not been won by the GB team | :20:29. | :20:34.
since 2003, so how do they rate their chances in Italy this | :20:34. | :20:43.
weekend? It is a special event. Representing Great Britain is a | :20:43. | :20:51.
special opportunity. I've had a very successful career, I'm still | :20:51. | :20:59.
very motivated to win the event and be part of the team. I'm ready to | :20:59. | :21:04.
lead another winter my list. thing that the Great Britain team | :21:04. | :21:08.
has that is unique is that we get on really well together. | :21:08. | :21:12.
represent Great Britain and be from Yorkshire, all of us, it is | :21:12. | :21:18.
something to be proud of. The team of four who trained together on a | :21:18. | :21:23.
regular basis are headed by legend of the sport. Great Britain's first | :21:23. | :21:28.

very much. I think it is time to move on. We always love a new work | :22:33. | :22:37.
by a David Hockney. He has been controversial in his time. I love | :22:37. | :22:45.
this one as well. Yes, his latest creation is in a garret at his | :22:45. | :22:55.
beloved Salts Mill in Saltaire. -- in a gallery. A off the back of a | :22:55. | :23:00.

You are scaring me! This is serious, Paul. I'm told that summer is over | :25:19. | :25:24.
efficiently and tonight it is a frost? Yes, a ground frost tonight, | :25:24. | :25:32.
definitely. Tomorrow will be the best day of the week. Like winds | :25:32. | :25:40.
tomorrow. Two pictures to show you before we get on to the forecast. | :25:40. | :25:46.
This one is lovely. The second one is near Barnsley. A lovely rainbow | :25:46. | :25:56.

Tomorrow, a lovely day. Make the most of it. This next system will | :26:07. | :26:12.
bring patchy rain in from the West during Friday and a weekend is | :26:12. | :26:17.
dominated by showers, some sunshine, but also the risk of one or two | :26:17. | :26:22.
longer spells of rain. We have got a week, cold front over the top of | :26:22. | :26:27.
Skipton where it has been drizzling all afternoon. That will gradually | :26:27. | :26:33.
push away southwards. Colossal sunshine towards the coast. Any | :26:33. | :26:41.
drizzle across the Pennines will fizzle out and it will become dry | :26:41. | :26:47.
and clear. By the end of the night, we are looking at three degrees in | :26:47. | :26:54.
some sports. The sun rises in the morning at 6:39am. Those are your | :26:54. | :27:01.
high water times. A lovely day, a chilly start, dry with long spells | :27:01. | :27:08.
of sunshine. Some patchy cloud later. In very light breeze from | :27:08. | :27:18.

the south-east. 18 degrees in Leeds and York. It turns unsettled | :27:24. | :27:31. |
