Good evening. The headlines this Friday evening: The death of one | :00:14. | :00:16.
Yorkshire serviceman and the repatriation of another, a stark | :00:16. | :00:23.
reminder of the sacrifices made. We'll be in both their home towns | :00:23. | :00:30.
as two minutes silence is observed. And we're also with injured soldier | :00:30. | :00:34.
Ben Parkinson, for the first time in five years able to stand to pay | :00:34. | :00:37.
his respects. Also tonight: A funeral with full police honours | :00:37. | :00:43.
for the traffic policeman killed on the M1 helping a stranded motorist. | :00:43. | :00:49.
And back with the big boys. FC Halifax Town in the first round of | :00:50. | :00:59.
the FA Cup. It has been another overcast day today. Will the sun | :00:59. | :01:09.
:01:09. | :01:15. | ||
Good evening. People across Yorkshire paused for two minutes | :01:15. | :01:19.
today to mark the sacrifices made by servicemen and women since | :01:19. | :01:27.
arriving in Afghanistan in 2001. 33 people from our region have been | :01:27. | :01:33.
killed in action. On Armistice Day, we tell you the story of three men. | :01:33. | :01:38.
Yes, of the TA soldier Matthew Thornton who was killed on | :01:38. | :01:44.
Wednesday. And in North Yorkshire, Matthew Haseldin's name was read | :01:44. | :01:51.
out. We also remember those injured. In a moment, Ben Parkinson will | :01:51. | :01:55.
walk to a service for the first time. Before that, our first report | :01:55. | :02:02.
tonight begins in Barnsley. Private Matthew Thornton in June | :02:02. | :02:05.
this year preparing to go to war with the Yorkshire Regiment. He was | :02:05. | :02:09.
a volunteer soldier. He went to the front line and paid the ultimate | :02:09. | :02:14.
prize. At the going down of the Sun, and in the morning, we will | :02:14. | :02:24.
:02:24. | :02:33. | ||
remember them. A we will remember And this morning in Barnsley, | :02:33. | :02:36.
hundreds gathered to remember him and all those who have given their | :02:36. | :02:43.
lives are serving their country. do have good turnout on Armistice | :02:43. | :02:47.
Day in Barnsley, but obviously today, given the sad news about | :02:47. | :02:54.
Matthew, or it has been bigger than usual. Private Matthew Thornton was | :02:54. | :02:59.
28 and came from the village of tartan. He died in a bomb explosion | :02:59. | :03:05.
in Helmand on Wednesday. He was a factory worker. Like to buy or his | :03:05. | :03:10.
colleagues and he will be sadly missed. -- like to buy all his | :03:10. | :03:17.
colleagues. We put our wish is up to his family and friends. I met | :03:17. | :03:20.
his unit in Wales as they trained for their tour of duty in | :03:20. | :03:24.
Afghanistan. It was clear these part-time soldiers were ready and | :03:24. | :03:29.
willing to go and fight and they knew the potential risks. You would | :03:29. | :03:35.
have to be stupid not to be apprehensive. The training | :03:35. | :03:41.
mitigates most of the risks. Most, but not all. Back in Barnsley this | :03:41. | :03:48.
morning, they recognised private Matthew Thornton's sacrifice. | :03:48. | :03:54.
Really proud of them. We hope this is the last one, we know for a fact | :03:54. | :04:04.
:04:04. | :04:08. | ||
it won't be. Family's like Matthew Haseldin's. He was shot in Helmand | :04:08. | :04:14.
last Thursday. He was 21. He only joined the Army eight months ago. | :04:14. | :04:21.
Much sadness at the pub where he worked before then. He's in very | :04:21. | :04:28.
high regard. He was a very nice person. The only time I have seen | :04:28. | :04:31.
grown men burst into tears at the bar when they heard the news about | :04:31. | :04:37.
Matthew. His body was brought back to the UK yesterday. Matthew | :04:37. | :04:43.
Thornton's coffin will be returned next week. Barnsley's Town Hall | :04:43. | :04:48.
flag was at half-mast for him today. Two young Yorkshire soldiers killed, | :04:48. | :04:56.
two more names to remember. Silence fell across Yorkshire earlier as | :04:56. | :04:59.
people paused for Armistice Day to mark the 11th hour of the 11th day | :04:59. | :05:09.
:05:09. | :05:31. | ||
At Imphal Barracks in York, all staff attended the ceremony to | :05:31. | :05:34.
remember military personnel who had fallen in active service. Elsewhere, | :05:35. | :05:38.
people of all ages gathered at war memorials across our region to mark | :05:38. | :05:48.
:05:48. | :05:55. | ||
the significance of both the date There were many veterans among the | :05:55. | :06:05.

crowds, as well as school children Emma Glasbey has been at a | :06:12. | :06:14.
particularly special Armistice Day service in Doncaster with Lance | :06:14. | :06:19.
Bombardier Ben Parkinson and she joins us now. Emma, some very | :06:19. | :06:25.
moving scenes there today. Absolutely. Ben Parkinson lost both | :06:25. | :06:29.
his legs in an explosion in Afghanistan five years ago. Today, | :06:29. | :06:33.
people stopped in the street in Doncaster and watched Ben get out | :06:33. | :06:36.
of his wheelchair and walked towards the service at the Mansion | :06:36. | :06:41.
House. Spontaneous applause broke out, and then actually stood for | :06:41. | :06:45.
the entire service, about 15 or 20 minutes. You're about to see the | :06:45. | :06:50.
progress he has made and it is a but -- it is remarkable. It was a | :06:50. | :07:00.
moment filled with pride. Lance Bombardier Ben Parkinson walking to | :07:00. | :07:04.

:07:14. | :07:14. | ||
Afghanistan and suffered brain damage -- five years ago. How did | :07:14. | :07:20.
it feel? It has always been a massive goal to stand and pay his | :07:20. | :07:27.
respects during the silence. How is your recovery going? Unbelievably | :07:27. | :07:37.
:07:37. | :07:41. | ||
well. Still a lot further to go. the age of just 22, Ben was caught | :07:41. | :07:45.
up in an explosion last on patrol. He became the most seriously | :07:45. | :07:51.
injured British serviceman to survive his wounds. He was never | :07:51. | :07:57.
expected to live, so to come this far has astonished everyone. | :07:57. | :08:00.
the textbooks written by the medics say you should not be here. He | :08:00. | :08:04.
should be lying in a bed, not quite in a vegetative state, but not far | :08:04. | :08:14.
off. He just does what he wants. Ben is almost certainly Yorkshire's | :08:14. | :08:20.
best known wartime hero. He is a familiar face at events like this | :08:20. | :08:24.
one held at Bradford. It was a good opportunity for him to catch up | :08:24. | :08:29.
with old friends. I have seen him frustrated with himself a couple of | :08:29. | :08:34.
times, but he has carried on fighting. The situation he has got | :08:34. | :08:40.
himself in now, it is remarkable. After a very public battle, Benn | :08:40. | :08:45.
has not been told he can stay in the army to continue his recovery - | :08:45. | :08:50.
- Benn has now been told. He is determined to walk tall without | :08:50. | :08:59.
help, and no one would bet against him. Inspirational story. We do get | :08:59. | :09:07.
them on this programme. Many of you have been in touch with us today | :09:07. | :09:09.
via our Facebook page after seeing those pictures of Ben Parkinson. | :09:09. | :09:13.
Jennifer Jensen says it makes her feel humble. Ben is so dignified | :09:13. | :09:19.
yet bold in his rehabilitation. Adrian Priestley says, an airborne | :09:19. | :09:28.
warrior through and through. Christine Greening writes, good for | :09:28. | :09:32.
him. I was in Scarborough Morrisons for the two minutes silence. You | :09:32. | :09:39.

traffic policeman killed helping others on the M1. 690 jobs could be | :10:06. | :10:12.
lost at Sheffield City Council. It has to save 55 million next year | :10:12. | :10:15.
because it will get less from the government. Councillors have | :10:15. | :10:18.
notified unit that -- unions this afternoon about possible | :10:18. | :10:24.
redundancies, while officials are being asked to work out detailed | :10:24. | :10:31.
money-saving proposals. It is that time of year again. The nights are | :10:31. | :10:35.
drawing in, here comes Christmas. So councils stop to think about the | :10:35. | :10:45.
:10:45. | :10:49. | ||
next financial idea at the end of March. Let's start -- take a look | :10:49. | :10:57.
at what they need to save. Inhered two they have got to save 55 | :10:57. | :11:06.

million. How many jobs could be at risk was? May be as many as 690. | :11:18. | :11:23.
This is the harsh reality of power. What will you do? It is not | :11:23. | :11:29.
decisions any of us want to take, but we have got the workforce, the | :11:29. | :11:37.
political will that we will work through and find the budget. We | :11:37. | :11:42.
need to ensure we are reducing the impact on jobs. 690 is the absolute | :11:43. | :11:48.
maximum we are expecting. We think we can bring you down there were, | :11:48. | :11:52.
it is a technical paper we need to put to the government. At least at | :11:52. | :12:02.
this puts it into the public realm. Are you going to consult the | :12:02. | :12:06.
public? It sounds like you have already made your mind up, six and | :12:06. | :12:15.
90 jobs. The need to make a detailed analysis and work out what | :12:15. | :12:19.
we need to look at again. It picks out the figures of the jobs that | :12:19. | :12:23.
could go under these proposals if we accept them all. That is why we | :12:23. | :12:27.
are doing this. We will now go to the public with the detail later in | :12:27. | :12:32.
the year to put the proposals to them, asked their opinions and seek | :12:33. | :12:42.
their views on things. Thank you for joining us. How academic a | :12:42. | :12:45.
these exercises? You start with hundreds of jobs going and it ends | :12:45. | :12:51.
up being a fraction of that number. How worried should your arm -- your | :12:51. | :12:56.
members be? 750 jobs had disappeared in this city in the | :12:56. | :13:04.
last year. Another 690 are at risk. We have to work with that number, | :13:04. | :13:08.
we will work with the council to drive that number down to the | :13:08. | :13:12.
lowest we possibly can. The conversations we need to have with | :13:12. | :13:16.
this council, we need to be talking about enterprising ways of | :13:16. | :13:21.
delivering services in the city. We need to be here -- innovative. | :13:21. | :13:25.
There are lots of ideas in the trade unions and the workforce | :13:25. | :13:32.
about how we can do that. Thank you very much indeed. We have heard | :13:32. | :13:35.
from the Sheffield City Council opposition group, the Lib Dems, | :13:35. | :13:39.
saying they fear a slash-and-burn approach. We will keep you up-to- | :13:39. | :13:48.
A former South Yorkshire Police constable has been jailed for 10 | :13:48. | :13:52.
years for masterminding Britain's biggest ever VAT fraud. Nigel | :13:52. | :13:59.
Cranswick was the director of Ideas 2 Go. He generated paperwork so he | :13:59. | :14:06.
could claim back 365 million in VAT from Revenue and Customs. Five | :14:06. | :14:11.
other people were convicted for related offences. The company was a | :14:11. | :14:18.
complete sham. They set up a company selling mobile phones. It | :14:18. | :14:23.
escalated in a short period of time to 527 million worth of trading. | :14:23. | :14:31.
They set up a bank account. Be complete company was an absolute | :14:31. | :14:36.
fabrication. A man who was jailed for murdering his wife in a post | :14:36. | :14:39.
office is to appeal against his conviction. 4-6-year-old Robin | :14:39. | :14:44.
Garbutt was found guilty of murdering Diana Garbutt and | :14:44. | :14:48.
sentenced to life. He was told he must serve at least 20 years behind | :14:48. | :14:56.
bars. Dannatt was found dead in March last year. Today Mr Garbutt's | :14:56. | :14:59.
barrister formally lodged an appeal. A a man has been found not guilty | :15:00. | :15:06.
of causing the death of a 15-year- old in a road crash. Natalia Wiley | :15:06. | :15:10.

Reed. Daniel Jeminson was cleared by causing death of dangerous | :15:13. | :15:17.
driving. 19-year-old Robert Turnbull has already pleaded guilty | :15:17. | :15:21.
to the same charge. Hundreds of police officers have | :15:21. | :15:24.
laid to rest one of their colleagues, a traffic officer | :15:24. | :15:30.
killed on duty on the M1 last month. Mark Goodlad was trying to help a | :15:30. | :15:34.
motorist who had broken down. His funeral took place this | :15:34. | :15:37.
afternoon at Wakefield Cathedral where he was given full police on | :15:37. | :15:47.
:15:47. | :15:49. | ||
-- full police on us. He had served for 10 years. Mark Goodlad's family | :15:49. | :15:55.
by request in the police car. At Wakefield Cathedral, his widow, | :15:55. | :16:02.
Helen, his 14-year-old son receives his father's police hat. His dad | :16:02. | :16:08.
was soon to have become a dog handler. His dog was there. He has | :16:08. | :16:13.
left us in tragic circumstances so we are here to mourn and here to | :16:13. | :16:17.
give thanks for the life of an exemplary police officer. He | :16:17. | :16:22.
encompassed everything that was good about a good police officer. | :16:22. | :16:28.
At the funeral service, the chief constable in his eulogy to Mark | :16:28. | :16:33.
Goodlad adopted the immortal words, he shall not grow old the nor | :16:33. | :16:40.
become wary, his memory will end Dewar. Never, he said, had a public | :16:40. | :16:45.
servant been so aptly named than Mark Goodlad. It is such an | :16:45. | :16:51.
ordinary act, an ordinary act of public service. It is not facing | :16:51. | :16:56.
the criminal with the gun or the crowd. It is not dashing into a | :16:56. | :17:00.
terrorist situation where a bomb might go off. This is what | :17:00. | :17:07.
policemen do every day. That is why it is so poignant. His colleagues | :17:07. | :17:13.
can say, with justification, it could have been me? Hundreds | :17:13. | :17:17.
watched outside. This gentleman gave his life of somebody else, | :17:17. | :17:21.
that is the ultimate price you can pay. He was doing his job and he | :17:21. | :17:27.
was killed. It is awful. Every time I see a poppy growing at the side | :17:27. | :17:33.
of a motorway, I will think of him. The on this day, the chief | :17:33. | :17:40.
constable's tribute to Mark Goodlad and his family. | :17:40. | :17:46.
Thank you. Before 7pm: harking back to the good old days. The stadium | :17:46. | :17:51.
and the Menem that may have changed, but to the Shaymen are hoping for | :17:51. | :17:57.
more giant-killing feats -- the stadium and the name may have | :17:57. | :18:05.
changed. They have just changed their name. | :18:05. | :18:14.
They have put FC instead of Halifax. -- in front of Halifax. | :18:14. | :18:20.
Intimidating atmosphere at Hull. New Zealand will have to face them | :18:20. | :18:27.
and his childhood hero. It is so split. The we will find out. They | :18:27. | :18:31.
have not named at the team yet. When it takes all, pick the cliche | :18:31. | :18:35.
you like, England take on New Zealand tomorrow knowing that only | :18:35. | :18:39.
victory will do if they will have - - if they want to have another | :18:39. | :18:42.
crack a to Australia in the Four Nations final. | :18:42. | :18:46.
Buoyed up by a positive performance in defeat to Australia, it was back | :18:46. | :18:52.
to hard graft in Loughborough. The reigning world Four Nations | :18:52. | :18:57.
champions New Zealand are up next. We know it is going to be really | :18:57. | :19:02.
difficult. We have a great coach and we are really fired up. To be | :19:02. | :19:07.
at this stage and have a deciding game still in the group stage is | :19:07. | :19:11.
fantastic. Both teams will be ready for it. We are expecting a really | :19:11. | :19:17.
tough game. We have only one one out of the last 10 against England | :19:17. | :19:22.
in England. We know it is going to be a big challenge him. Big home | :19:22. | :19:32.
:19:32. | :19:35. | ||
That is an impossible try! Show, my word! | :19:35. | :19:39.
All the talk of promise, England know they need to do more. They are | :19:39. | :19:44.
building towards the 2013 World Cup, but this is a team that wants | :19:44. | :19:51.
success sooner rather than later. think we are ready. The group, in | :19:51. | :19:56.
terms of belief, is ready to go to the next stage. But we have to win | :19:56. | :20:00.
the game. It is as simple as that. We have to put in a really good | :20:00. | :20:04.
performance against New Zealand. That will give us a great | :20:04. | :20:10.
opportunity to get to the next stage. England are still waiting on | :20:10. | :20:14.
the fitness of the captain. They will name their side at the last | :20:14. | :20:18.
possible moment. Staying with rugby league. | :20:18. | :20:22.
Wakefield's Glenn Morrison has been forced to retire. He suffered a | :20:22. | :20:26.
seemingly innocuous injury in the first week of pre-season. Medical | :20:26. | :20:31.
experts have confirmed he will need major surgery on his left shoulder. | :20:31. | :20:34.
He will still be with the club as an assistant coach. | :20:34. | :20:38.
In cricket, of Yorkshire are set to appoint Jason Gillespie as their | :20:38. | :20:43.
first team coach. If they did 6- year-old fast bowler spent two | :20:43. | :20:47.
seasons at Headingley. He will work alongside Martyn Moxon. Yorkshire | :20:47. | :20:51.
are expected to confirm his appointment and the rest of the | :20:51. | :20:55.
coaching team next week. Football, this weekend it is the | :20:55. | :21:03.
first round proper of this season's FA Cup. FC Halifax are back with | :21:03. | :21:08.
the big boys and will play Cheltenham on Sunday. -- told them | :21:09. | :21:16.
on Sunday. We will give it our best shot. Charlton are an exceptional | :21:16. | :21:22.
side. It may be our turn on Sunday Tostock Bobby Hamm has already | :21:22. | :21:28.
given up the papers the headlines, to preview the biggest match yet. | :21:28. | :21:35.
It looks different than the last time. New year's date 1990, Halifax | :21:35. | :21:42.
Town, one. Manchester City, zero. Any reporters expecting the old | :21:43. | :21:47.
track and crumbling terraces will be disappointed. Since the rebirth | :21:47. | :21:53.
of the club as a FC Halifax town in 2008, two promotions have gone | :21:53. | :21:57.
hand-in-hand with an impressive rebrand. It would now not look out | :21:57. | :22:03.
of place in Charlton's division, three leagues above. We are | :22:03. | :22:09.
building a nice little club. This is going to put us on the map. The | :22:09. | :22:12.
ultimate boss is to get back into the football league. We are trying | :22:13. | :22:17.
to build up a solid foundation, both on and off the field. It is | :22:17. | :22:23.
just like coming to a league ground. Maybe you should have kept the | :22:23. | :22:30.
ground?! It would have been better. Can you not switch the hot water | :22:30. | :22:35.
off? I would rather flood the pitch. The weather gods have even been | :22:35. | :22:39.
trying to do that already for Halifax Town as the squad prepared | :22:39. | :22:44.
this week. Sheffield Wednesday also have to wait until Sunday for their | :22:44. | :22:51.
tie. Before that on Saturday, Bradford go to Hampshire to face | :22:51. | :22:58.
one of the happened coming names from southern non- league football. | :22:58. | :23:00.
Sheffield United and Huddersfield Town and Rotherham United are also | :23:00. | :23:06.
playing. Bradford City, there is no chance of a penalty shoot-out in | :23:06. | :23:09.
this tie. But there might be if they can force a replay against | :23:09. | :23:16.
Rochdale. You never know. Can I just plug the highlights for | :23:16. | :23:22.
the rugby league. That is on Sunday at 4pm. On BBC Two. Are you sure it | :23:22. | :23:32.
:23:32. | :23:33. | ||
is at 4pm? Absolutely sure of. I can't believe she did that! | :23:33. | :23:40.
Just ahead of the weather, later tonight we will have Chris Evans | :23:40. | :23:44.
presenting a special BBC programme looking back at the life of Jimmy | :23:44. | :23:50.
Savile. It is called Jimmy Savile: As It 'appened. It is here on BBC | :23:50. | :24:00.
:24:00. | :24:04. | ||
One at 8:30pm. Dull, drizzly. It will get better | :24:04. | :24:10.
over the weekend. We have had some lovely photos. We do not know where | :24:10. | :24:20.
:24:20. | :24:22. | ||
it is from. The police do not seem to mind the weather. Keep your | :24:22. | :24:28.
photos coming in -- v East do not seem to mind. It has been dull and | :24:28. | :24:35.
damp. It will brighten up tomorrow. Rain overnight. A better chance of | :24:35. | :24:39.
some sunshine tomorrow before the warm front pushes back up from the | :24:39. | :24:46.
south. The satellite picture from today shows it clearly. The cloud, | :24:46. | :24:50.
you can see, it is whiter in the West. It is heading our way and | :24:50. | :24:55.
will spill its way eastwards this evening. Heavy and persistent rain | :24:55. | :24:59.
pushing its way eastwards overnight. It will clear the post by the end | :24:59. | :25:05.
of the night. We will keep cloudy skies. Temperatures down to seven | :25:05. | :25:12.
to 11 degrees. Winds gusty towards the post. The sun will rise | :25:12. | :25:22.
:25:22. | :25:23. | ||
tomorrow morning at 720 7am. It was set at 4:12pm. Outbreaks of rain | :25:23. | :25:28.
near the post. Through the day, the cloud will friend from the West. | :25:28. | :25:36.
The West is definitely going to be best. The cloud may well stay with | :25:36. | :25:40.
the post in the second part of the afternoon. It will feel warmer | :25:40. | :25:45.
tomorrow with just a light breeze. Top temperatures in Scarborough of | :25:45. | :25:54.
13 degrees. It is above average for the time of year. Sunday, it is | :25:54. | :26:02.
going to turn cloudy again for -- cloudy again. Turning dryer in the | :26:02. | :26:09.
