Tonight - millions of pounds compensation. A legal victory for

:00:07.:00:10.

the student who'll need lifelong care after being paralysed in a car

:00:10.:00:17.

crash. Also on tonight's programme: Caught by the clampers - the

:00:17.:00:19.

motorist who says she was wheelclamped - even though she

:00:19.:00:27.

still had the engine running. And sweet memories - Smarties

:00:27.:00:37.
:00:37.:00:38.

And an overcast start of the working week. Some brakes are

:00:38.:00:48.
:00:48.:00:53.

possible later tomorrow, if so, it Welcome to the programme. A student

:00:53.:00:56.

from Sheffield, left paralysed from the chest down after a car crash,

:00:56.:00:58.

is set to receive millions of pounds after being awarded lifelong

:00:58.:01:01.

care costs. Rosie Mayes was injured just before

:01:01.:01:04.

Christmas two years ago when she was a passenger in a car that

:01:04.:01:08.

overturned. Despite suffering catastrophic injuries, she has

:01:08.:01:11.

fought back and resumed her studies - and now has won a legal battle to

:01:11.:01:17.

ensure she is looked after for the rest of her life. Joe Inwood has

:01:17.:01:25.

been to meet her. They told me that I would be in a

:01:25.:01:30.

wheelchair for the rest of my life, and it wasn't until then that I

:01:30.:01:33.

really understood the full extent of what had happened to me. She had

:01:33.:01:37.

been a passenger in a car, driven by her then boyfriend, when it

:01:37.:01:41.

crashed into an embankment and overturned. It cost Rosie 10 months

:01:41.:01:46.

in hospital and almost all movement below the chest. I can't do

:01:46.:01:56.
:01:56.:01:56.

anything on my own, I always need help. And... I think it has

:01:56.:02:02.

affected my life and my family and friends. Ever since the car she was

:02:02.:02:06.

in hit that Burdge, Rosie has needed care 24 hours a day. That

:02:06.:02:11.

does not come cheap. At first the insurance and driver were covering

:02:11.:02:16.

the costs, but seven months ago, they changed their mind and it

:02:16.:02:21.

wasn't the driver's fault, and that is how it ended up in court.

:02:21.:02:25.

decision by the insurance company to contest liability back in July

:02:25.:02:30.

it was really a body blow for all of us, and under Bairbre think

:02:30.:02:38.

Rosie has had to go through, to add the and 78 and the stress this has

:02:38.:02:44.

caused us all, was outrageous -- of the uncertainty and the stress.

:02:44.:02:52.

judge agreed. The final figure has yet to be decided, but so titters -

:02:52.:02:57.

- solicitor's aim she could get an eight-figure settlement. As far as

:02:57.:03:05.

the future is concerned, I'm not sure what career I want to do, but

:03:05.:03:14.

there is a lot of things that now, since I have had this injury, I

:03:14.:03:18.

want to change. For Rosie, no amount of money can give her back

:03:18.:03:23.

the life she once had. But it can make the one she now has just but

:03:23.:03:29.

that will bit easier. -- just that little bit easier.

:03:29.:03:33.

I'm joined now by Neil Whiteley, Rosie's solicitor. This seems an

:03:33.:03:39.

incredible amount of money, why is it so high? As we have just heard,

:03:39.:03:45.

Rosie had a life-changing injury, and relieve with the compensation,

:03:45.:03:51.

what we can now trying do is restore some quality of life. Her

:03:51.:03:56.

care needs will be substantial, at she will need adapted housing,

:03:56.:04:00.

equipment, and most of all, she will need support with the

:04:00.:04:04.

rehabilitation, just to try and get her able to do as much as she can.

:04:04.:04:07.

The compensation will allow her to do that, so it is vitally important

:04:07.:04:12.

to Rosie that she has secured this victory. It clearly is going to be

:04:12.:04:16.

millions. Why did she have to go through a court case in the first

:04:16.:04:23.

place? It is a great shame, and the judge was emphatic in the judgment

:04:23.:04:29.

that the insurance company should really have accepted that the

:04:30.:04:33.

driver was to blame. The Great Train here is that the first few

:04:33.:04:38.

months after an injury as to be as this are the most important to

:04:38.:04:41.

focus on rehabilitation, and unfortunately, Rosie had to go

:04:41.:04:46.

through a court battle that she could have done without. So it is a

:04:46.:04:51.

great shame, and we wish they had cut to the chase two years ago and

:04:51.:04:55.

enabled her to move on. Is this the end of it or is there likely to be

:04:55.:04:58.

an appeal about the figure that will be decided in the next few

:04:58.:05:04.

days or so? Well, there is no suggestion of the insurance company

:05:04.:05:10.

appealing the actual decision of the court. But we know from our own

:05:10.:05:14.

experience, from representing seriously injured people like Rosie,

:05:14.:05:18.

but unfortunately, these disputes to go one in the sense that

:05:18.:05:22.

insurance companies do make climates fight for every penny and

:05:22.:05:29.

really prove their case. -- claimants. But hopefully, we will

:05:29.:05:35.

get the right result for Rosie at the end of the day. Thank you.

:05:35.:05:40.

Later on Look North: Was this the goal that saved Gary Megson's job?

:05:40.:05:43.

We look at the fallout from yesterday's tumultuous Steel City

:05:43.:05:52.

York is one of our most affluent and popular cities - and one of the

:05:52.:05:57.

most expensive. But there are fears that the city will be off-limits to

:05:57.:05:59.

residents on low incomes or benefits because of recent changes

:05:59.:06:05.

in housing benefit. Rents in the city start at

:06:05.:06:07.

substantially more than the maximum amount of money the government will

:06:07.:06:13.

pay out. Here's Danni Hewson. It's quite a complicated equation,

:06:13.:06:16.

but to put it as simply as I can, rents on a fairly basic two-bedroom

:06:16.:06:20.

flat start at an average of 615 a month - the maximum amount that can

:06:20.:06:24.

be claimed toward - that rent in York is now just 500, and that's

:06:24.:06:26.

leaving people like single mum Naomi with massive shortfalls that

:06:26.:06:36.
:06:36.:06:38.

they can't meet. I just can't afford to be there. I am struggling

:06:38.:06:44.

as it is because it is so high. When I was trying to find where we

:06:44.:06:48.

are now, that was one of the cheapest, but that is expensive, so

:06:48.:06:53.

trying to find somewhere cheaper, I don't know how you can! The changes

:06:53.:06:56.

are hitting people in York harder than almost anywhere else in the

:06:56.:06:59.

country outside of London because of the way in which the

:06:59.:07:05.

Let's compare York's maximum of 500 a calendar month with the 595

:07:05.:07:09.

you could qualify for if you rent in Harrogate, where the market is

:07:09.:07:13.

broadly the same. The reason for the gap is that York's rate is

:07:13.:07:16.

calculated looking at a rental map which takes in areas like Selby

:07:16.:07:21.

where rents are much cheaper. Now if you're thinking it's just people

:07:21.:07:24.

who are unemployed who are taking a hit, consider that the shortfall is

:07:24.:07:26.

pushing people like Naomi onto social housing waiting lists and

:07:26.:07:30.

that means low income workers are falling to the back of the queue

:07:30.:07:40.
:07:40.:07:41.

Know, it is not even on the equation to move out of York. I

:07:41.:07:45.

need my job to be able to provide for my kids, and my husband works

:07:45.:07:50.

in and around York and covers a wide area, so we need to be in York

:07:50.:07:56.

to be able to provide a roof over our children's heads. All this is

:07:56.:08:00.

bad news for an economy like York's, which relies on its low income

:08:00.:08:02.

workers to staff bars, shops and tourist attractions. Now it's hoped

:08:02.:08:05.

the changes will not only bring down the governments benefits bill

:08:05.:08:08.

but also drive down rents in the private sector to make things more

:08:08.:08:17.

affordable to all of us. We did ask the government for a

:08:17.:08:20.

housing minister to talk to us about the issues in York - but no

:08:20.:08:28.

one was available. Instead they And you can see more about that

:08:28.:08:35.

story on Inside Out at 7.30pm tonight on BBC1.

:08:35.:08:37.

Friends and family of the murdered Doncaster schoolgirl Casey Kearney

:08:37.:08:42.

have raised around 3,500 for her family. Hundreds of people took

:08:42.:08:45.

part in a six-mile memorial walk yesterday from Casey's home in

:08:45.:08:48.

Rossington, to Elmfield Park in the centre of Doncaster where she was

:08:48.:08:58.
:08:58.:08:59.

stabbed nearly a fortnight ago. Casey's funeral will take place on

:08:59.:09:03.

Friday. Dutch national Edwin van Winsen has

:09:03.:09:06.

become the fourth and final man to be jailed in Britain's largest

:09:06.:09:10.

cannabis importation racket. He received four years for his part in

:09:10.:09:13.

150 million worth of the drug being brought into the Leeds area

:09:13.:09:19.

from Holland in flower boxes. An actor from Leeds who shot to

:09:19.:09:22.

international stardom in the new version of Wuthering Heights has

:09:22.:09:26.

been sectioned under the Mental Health Act. 24-year-old James

:09:26.:09:29.

Howson from Burmantofts was due to be sentenced by Leeds magistrates

:09:29.:09:36.

today for the racially aggravated harassment of a former girlfriend.

:09:36.:09:41.

The hearing's been adjourned. We've all heard stories of cars

:09:41.:09:44.

being clamped and the penalties charged for parking where you

:09:44.:09:49.

shouldn't. But did you know you can be clamped - even if your engine is

:09:49.:09:52.

running? That's what happened to Dales

:09:52.:09:56.

couple Brian and Naomi Reid this weekend. They handed over 150 to

:09:56.:09:59.

free their car - even thought Brian says he wasn't actually parking.

:09:59.:10:09.
:10:09.:10:10.

Cathy Killick reports. Brian and his wife Naomi were last

:10:10.:10:14.

in this Skipton car-park on Saturday afternoon. Brent is he

:10:14.:10:19.

pulled up to drop his wife of, kept the engine running while retuned

:10:19.:10:26.

his radio, and was about to drive off when this Land Rover hemmed him

:10:26.:10:29.

in. He could hardly believe what happened next. I could hardly

:10:29.:10:36.

believe it, next thing, I saw him fly under the car, and I saw it

:10:36.:10:39.

rattling about, I got out that he was put in a clamp on the wheel.

:10:39.:10:45.

Never spoke to me. Brain called the police and two community support

:10:45.:10:48.

offices turned up. The police know him, they pleaded with him not to

:10:48.:10:57.

put a clamp on. They said, let him go, that is that. But no, he said.

:10:57.:11:04.

It is parked illegally. The clamper was Gareth Evans. He runs a company

:11:04.:11:08.

which has already earned quite a reputation in Haworth for its over-

:11:08.:11:13.

zealous use of clamps and its insistence on high release fees.

:11:13.:11:18.

Back in Skipton, Naomi was sent to the cash machine to get 150. She

:11:19.:11:23.

was told that be would double. was shaking uncontrollably, because

:11:23.:11:28.

I kept thinking, if somebody was at the ATM machine and I cannot get

:11:28.:11:32.

this money out, I might come back down the alley weight and it might

:11:32.:11:38.

be 300, 600. He was just calling the shots. Mr Evans didn't want to

:11:38.:11:42.

be interviewed on camera, but this did to me on the phone and said he

:11:42.:11:46.

acted within the law at all times. And he can prove it, because he was

:11:46.:11:51.

wearing concealed CCTV at the time. He says the Data Protection Act

:11:51.:11:54.

prevents him from showing me the footage but that he has it should

:11:54.:12:00.

the case come to court. And it made. Naomi claims she was pushed by

:12:00.:12:05.

Gareth Evans as he was removing the clamp. He denies the assault. The

:12:05.:12:08.

police are investigating her allegation, in the meantime, the

:12:08.:12:15.

couple will be sticking to council- run car-parks in future.

:12:15.:12:18.

The Government says it would "not hesitate" in ending its commercial

:12:18.:12:20.

relationship with Sheffield based A-4-E if there's proven evidence of

:12:20.:12:27.

fraud. A police investigation's underway. The chair of the company,

:12:27.:12:30.

Emma Harrison, resigned last week. The company has government

:12:30.:12:34.

contracts to get the long-term unemployed back to work.

:12:34.:12:37.

Calderdale Council is meeting now to decide how to find savings in

:12:37.:12:42.

its annual budget. These were the scenes of protest over cuts last

:12:42.:12:51.

year. The council needs to find 7 million of savings this year.

:12:51.:12:53.

Around 100 jobs are at risk under the proposals.

:12:53.:12:56.

The owners of Wentworth Woodhouse near Rotherham are suing for

:12:56.:12:58.

compensation because they say the house is suffering from mining

:12:58.:13:02.

subsidence. Owners say they're seeking 100 million in

:13:02.:13:05.

compensation from the coal authority.

:13:05.:13:10.

Before 7pm - is Doncaster really part of Scotland? We look at claims

:13:10.:13:13.

that the South Yorkshire town really belongs to England's

:13:13.:13:18.

northern neighbours. And we celebrate 75 years since

:13:18.:13:28.
:13:28.:13:36.

Smarties were first invented in If it is the birthplace of a well-

:13:36.:13:40.

known small suite, it is the birthday of a small bow the

:13:40.:13:49.

presenter as well. Interesting that. Tanya, what have you got for us?

:13:49.:13:53.

You were at Hillsborough for the Derby, cracking and the sphere.

:13:53.:13:57.

Despite victory in the Steel City derby, the future of the Sheffield

:13:57.:13:59.

Wednesday manager, Gary Megson, still seems uncertain. Chris

:13:59.:14:03.

O'Grady's goal gave them the win over United. The Blades remain

:14:03.:14:06.

second, the Owls close the gap in third. After the match, the

:14:06.:14:13.

Wednesday fans certainly seemed to be behind their manager. I am

:14:13.:14:19.

totally behind Kerry makes him, I would be gutted if he went. I had

:14:19.:14:25.

my doubts about him, but he has got the motoring today. He got it right,

:14:25.:14:31.

he got the team right. It is a great result for us and it is

:14:31.:14:35.

against our local neighbours. That is the only two things we were

:14:35.:14:40.

concerned with. Not only is it a great result, it is a great

:14:40.:14:43.

performance given the magnitude of a Sheffield derby. Rob Staton, who

:14:43.:14:50.

covers Sheffield Wednesday for Radio Sheffield, joins me now. Is

:14:50.:14:54.

this just paper tour, is there really a rift? You have just seen a

:14:54.:14:58.

clip of the goalscorer sprinting to the manager once he has scored,

:14:58.:15:01.

which suggests that the players feel like there's something going

:15:01.:15:06.

on. We saw the captain giving the manager at big bear hug and

:15:06.:15:10.

afterwards Gary makes and says he pills he has taken Sheffield

:15:10.:15:17.

Wednesday on in the last 18 months. If Wednesday are not interested in

:15:18.:15:21.

his services, they would just go somewhere else and be a success.

:15:21.:15:25.

When you put all that together, I think there is something in those

:15:25.:15:30.

and it is something we will monitor. There have been rumours of the

:15:30.:15:34.

chairman talking to other potential managers which is never a good sign.

:15:34.:15:39.

It is not, and there has been talking the National newspapers

:15:39.:15:46.

that the owner has met with David Jones and Paul Ince. There were

:15:46.:15:51.

also reports that carried medicine has reported me than mandarins to

:15:51.:15:59.

the League managers' Association. We will follow that up on BBC Radio

:15:59.:16:04.

Sheffield. But certainly it is an interesting story and slightly

:16:04.:16:09.

strange, given how Sheffield Wednesday are doing in the lead. It

:16:09.:16:13.

is no shame to be behind top athletic and Sheffield United in

:16:13.:16:18.

the table, but it is all about promotion. Do you think he is going

:16:18.:16:24.

to stay or go? It is such a tough question. We are in a position that

:16:24.:16:28.

it could be in the next few days there we see it change even though

:16:28.:16:33.

Wednesday defeated Sheffield United. It could be a case of a few more

:16:33.:16:37.

weeks, we could be looking at the end of the season.

:16:37.:16:40.

It was also a significant weekend for Leeds United and Huddersfield

:16:41.:16:44.

Town. Both teams played their first match under their new managers.

:16:44.:16:51.

Shamir Masri brings you the action from the rest of our teams.

:16:51.:16:54.

Neil Warnock's first game in charge of Leeds turned out be a

:16:55.:16:59.

frustrating trip to Portsmouth. The talking point was this effort from

:16:59.:17:04.

Ross McCormack. Was it over the line? Leeds had the chances to take

:17:04.:17:09.

that lead but could not and of four points off the play-offs. Doncaster

:17:09.:17:13.

were hoping for a win to lift them off the bottom. It was going well

:17:13.:17:17.

with Giles Barnes putting them ahead before half-time. Despite

:17:17.:17:22.

chances to extend their lead, an injury-time equaliser from

:17:22.:17:26.

Peterborough is Doncaster bottom. Barnsley could not do themselves or

:17:26.:17:31.

Doncaster any favours. They could any loose against relegation-

:17:31.:17:35.

threatened Coventry. Simon Grayson enjoyed his quick return to

:17:35.:17:38.

management with a win for promotion-chasing Huddersfield.

:17:38.:17:45.

Jamie McCombe with the opener and Jordan Rhodes marked his return to

:17:45.:17:50.

the scoresheet with a measured chip come shot. It took Chesterfield 45

:17:50.:17:55.

minutes to get going and not county. Fortunately, Jonathan Forte scored

:17:55.:18:02.

the only goal for a win for Chesterfield. It means they are

:18:02.:18:08.

bottom from League One and five. From settee. Bradford City er

:18:08.:18:13.

attracted a record lead to crowd of over 17,000 having slashed ticket

:18:13.:18:19.

prices to just 1. They salvage what could be a vital point keeping

:18:19.:18:27.

them five points clear of the drop zone. Rotherham's four-game

:18:27.:18:32.

unbeaten run was beaten. On to Super League, and Castleford

:18:32.:18:35.

took the opportunity to remember Robbie Millward ahead of their

:18:35.:18:38.

match against Wigan. There was a minute's applause at the Colliseum

:18:38.:18:41.

for the son of head coach, Ian Millward. Robbie died suddenly,

:18:41.:18:45.

aged just 19, last weekend. Castleford went on to lose heavily

:18:45.:18:48.

to Wigan but there were wins for Leeds, Huddersfield and Bradford

:18:48.:18:50.

over the weekend and some spectacular tries, including this

:18:50.:18:56.

one from the Rhinos. It was a team effort, finished off under the

:18:56.:18:59.

posts by Ben Jones-Bishop, and was their opener in the comprehensive

:18:59.:19:06.

victory over Widnes. And you can catch all the weekend's action on

:19:06.:19:09.

the Super League Show tonight at 11.35 - and, trust me, there are

:19:09.:19:14.

some incredible tries to see. In diving, Leeds' Hannah Starling

:19:14.:19:18.

rounded off a wonderful week for our divers at the world cup event

:19:18.:19:22.

in London by winning the dive off in the 3m springboard. It means

:19:22.:19:25.

she's qualified fr the final place for the Olympics, so Great Britain

:19:25.:19:28.

will have a full compliment at the Games.

:19:28.:19:31.

And Leeds boxer Nicola Adams won gold at the Strandja cup in

:19:31.:19:38.

Bulgaria and was awarded best boxer of the tournament. And finally, in

:19:38.:19:40.

squash, Pontefract's James Willstrop is back to number one in

:19:40.:19:44.

the world after beating Egypt's Ramy Ashour in the final of the

:19:44.:19:47.

Davenport North American Open. He replaces Sheffield's Nick Matthew,

:19:47.:19:57.
:19:57.:19:58.

of course, as the rivalry goes on. That is it from me, it is lovely to

:19:58.:20:02.

have you back. A host of women have tried to keep him company, but we

:20:03.:20:07.

are not just the same. I'm glad be back, especially on a

:20:07.:20:11.

momentous day like Paul's birthday. Next tonight, hold on to your

:20:11.:20:14.

sporrans, because it turns out that Doncaster might belong to Scotland.

:20:14.:20:17.

No, it isn't April 1st, but instead a serious possibility that the town

:20:17.:20:21.

was given to the Scots as a peace token hundreds of years ago and

:20:21.:20:24.

never formally reclaimed. Tom Ingall crosses the border to

:20:24.:20:34.
:20:34.:20:34.

investigate. Scotland, as the Rolling colognes,

:20:34.:20:44.

blocks. The history. And yes, there Doncaster. Even at some of the

proud be Yorkshire in Yorkshire is not in Scotland. From a purely

geographical view, the Scottish claim looks tenuous. But consider

:21:04.:21:08.

the history. Contemporary chronicles show the town was to be

surviving royal charters to the town. Bike 1194, this document

of the gift. I can think of no formal document which says

:21:36.:21:41.

Doncaster is no longer the property of the King of the Scots. With a

bit of imagination you can see how this might work. The stage and

be pulled by Alex Salmond than the three pretenders in England at the

would come to some sort of agreement! He would be deputy First

Minister! But any real claim to Doncaster may stand on shaky ground.

:22:45.:22:55.

The dream will probably fade. I had been away for four weeks and

:22:55.:23:01.

a lot has changed. It is Paul's birthday and for the first time he

has bought cakes. We have here a rather special birthday. Smarties

investigate the background to that. What a lot of fun you get when you

ask for a tube of Smarties! Invented in Yorkshire and beaten

:23:32.:23:36.

around the world, Smarties are one of the oldest types of chocolate

is a lot of cloud. Perhaps thick enough cloud for drizzle over the

tops of the hills. You can see the extent of the cloud rolling in from

the West. It has just about cleared now. But throughout the next few

hours there will be drizzle and hill fog. To the east of high
