Hello - welcome to Friday's Look North Tonight - a weekend of | :00:06. | :00:10.
tributes. As Yorkshire continues to mourn its fallen soldiers - | :00:10. | :00:20.
:00:20. | :00:21. | ||
ceremonies will be held throughout the county. They're willing to do | :00:21. | :00:26.
it the final sacrifice, and this five just did it. We have to say, | :00:26. | :00:32.
you are brave, you're a tough, Europe the best. Also tonight - | :00:32. | :00:35.
heading for the most dangerous country in the world. We hear from | :00:35. | :00:37.
the Yorkshire troops completing their final training before being | :00:37. | :00:44.
sent to Afghanistan. We have to get on with the job. We | :00:45. | :00:50.
have to get in there and fight the enemy. | :00:50. | :00:53.
And London's got Boris Johnson, but should OUR four biggest cities be | :00:53. | :01:00.
run by elected mayors as well? I will be back later with the | :01:00. | :01:09.
Good evening. Yorkshire has been continuing to pay its respects to | :01:09. | :01:13.
the young soldiers who tragically lost their lives in a bomb blast in | :01:13. | :01:17.
Afghanistan. People have been queuing up to sign | :01:17. | :01:21.
condolence books in Dewsbury, Halifax and in Huddersfield. Flags | :01:21. | :01:24.
have been flying at half-mast and over the weekend special services | :01:24. | :01:33.
are taking place at churches and at sports stadiums. Three of the | :01:33. | :01:36.
soldiers from the third battalion, the Yorkshire Regiment were from | :01:36. | :01:38.
Huddersfield - Corporal Jake Hartley and Private Anthony | :01:38. | :01:43.
Frampton, who were both 20 and Private Daniel Wilford, 21. | :01:43. | :01:46.
Private Christopher Kershaw was 19 and from Bradford, and Private | :01:46. | :01:48.
Daniel Wade was 20 and from Warrington. | :01:48. | :01:51.
Their sergeant was Nigel Coupe, aged 33, from the First Duke of | :01:51. | :01:55.
Lancaster's. Our reporter Heidi Tomlinson joins | :01:55. | :02:05.
:02:05. | :02:08. | ||
us now from Huddersfield Parish Church of St Peter's. | :02:08. | :02:11.
It they have been a few days since the news of the horrific attack, | :02:11. | :02:15.
but it is just sinking in here in Huddersfield. People have wanted to | :02:15. | :02:20.
come out and express their sorrow will the families who have lost | :02:20. | :02:25.
their children. People were queuing down the aisle to write their | :02:25. | :02:28.
thoughts in the book of condolence. A moment to reflect inside the | :02:28. | :02:33.
peaceful setting of Huddersfield parish church. It is hard to come | :02:33. | :02:38.
to terms with the loss of so many young lives. For some, just writing | :02:38. | :02:47.
down thoughts helped. Friends describe to the soldiers as caring | :02:47. | :02:51.
lads who are full of life. I know they felt very proud to be in the | :02:51. | :03:01.
:03:01. | :03:04. | ||
Army. They used to show us videos of when they were in training. I | :03:04. | :03:08.
can imagine they were nervous and scared to going. Five of the six | :03:09. | :03:12.
soldiers killed where from the third Battalion the Yorkshire | :03:12. | :03:15.
Regiment. Colleagues in the same regiment our currently trading on | :03:15. | :03:25.
Salisbury Plain, preparing for deployment to Afghanistan. We were | :03:25. | :03:31.
all friends, but it is devastating. The communities to soldiers called | :03:31. | :03:36.
Homer had been paying their respects today. Flowers left | :03:36. | :03:43.
outside a soldier's house. Just days before or one soldier left for | :03:43. | :03:47.
of Bannister, he had been at the local pub for a sent off. When the | :03:47. | :03:53.
news of his death broke, his friends met here. They all had a | :03:53. | :04:01.
drink together and raise a glass for the lads. Me were just gutted. | :04:01. | :04:06.
There where it chatting and reminiscing, it was nice. Nice to | :04:06. | :04:11.
see them all together. Just up the road and Longwood, the war memorial | :04:11. | :04:16.
was a focal point for people's grief. It is years away from | :04:16. | :04:19.
private and to the front and his family home. At the football | :04:19. | :04:26.
stadium, bare staging a one-minute silence before the game. Players | :04:26. | :04:30.
will be warming up in charity shirts ahead of the match. We have | :04:30. | :04:35.
been contacted by some people from the Yorkshire Regiment who are here | :04:35. | :04:38.
in the community and they want to come down, so we have some friends | :04:38. | :04:42.
of the fallen soldiers who are coming and they will be mediocre | :04:42. | :04:47.
players. Prayers will be said for all six soldiers during Sunday | :04:47. | :04:52.
services in Huddersfield and Bradford this weekend, giving | :04:52. | :04:59.
congregations a chance to reflect on the week's devastating news. The | :04:59. | :05:02.
Yorkshire regiment used to be based in Halifax and at Halifax Menston | :05:02. | :05:05.
the Sunday, there is a special service to remember the servicemen | :05:05. | :05:09.
who have died and also those were still serving in dangerous | :05:09. | :05:13.
countries throughout the world. Also in Dewsbury Minster, they have | :05:13. | :05:21.
opened a book of condolence. In Bradford, St Paul's Church will | :05:21. | :05:25.
have a one-minute silence at their Sunday service. Tomorrow, sporting | :05:25. | :05:28.
events are also remembering the soldiers had died. A minute's | :05:28. | :05:33.
silence will be held before football matches and Huddersfield | :05:33. | :05:37.
Town have also said they extend an open invitation to any servicemen | :05:37. | :05:42.
and women who want come down and watch them. They can come down for | :05:42. | :05:49.
a free, pick up a ticket in the part of the training there. | :05:49. | :05:52.
Well, inevitably with the loss of so many young lives, the role of | :05:52. | :05:54.
our armed forces in Afghanistan is being questioned by some. The | :05:55. | :05:58.
Archbishop of York lives in an Army city. The Yorkshire Regiment has | :05:58. | :06:01.
its headquarters there, so his views on the war are significant. I | :06:01. | :06:07.
went along to see him this morning. Once again, the Fortes of the six | :06:07. | :06:13.
men tell the story of a tragic loss. The Archbishop feels that loss. He | :06:13. | :06:23.
:06:23. | :06:25. | ||
regards the Yorkshire Ripper Lynch as his own. -- Regiment. | :06:26. | :06:31.
These are brothers. These are sons who have actually been killed while | :06:31. | :06:37.
doing their job, doing their duty. When you lose so many people from | :06:37. | :06:41.
one regiment, there are inevitably questions over whether the war is | :06:41. | :06:46.
justified. It was a war agreed by the United Nations and it has my | :06:46. | :06:52.
full backing. I never at supported the war in Iraq, because it never | :06:52. | :06:58.
had a United Nations mandate. That was wrong. This one, I do not think | :06:58. | :07:02.
it is. Despite United Nations mandate, is there a point which | :07:02. | :07:06.
comes around when Gourock is unjustifiable, when you lose so | :07:06. | :07:12.
many people? The decision for me is to support and not sit on the | :07:12. | :07:18.
sidelines and say come back. I am quite sure the commanders are | :07:18. | :07:22.
absolutely devastated. You do not want to command a unit and then | :07:22. | :07:26.
find five if you men are killed. You are very much a hands-on | :07:26. | :07:30.
archbishop and you want to play an important role now helping the | :07:30. | :07:35.
families. My first priority is to meet the family soon find out now | :07:35. | :07:39.
this has happened, I are there things we as the people of | :07:39. | :07:43.
Yorkshire, not the Government, and the people of Yorkshire it can do | :07:43. | :07:48.
to support them. They are trained very well, they are willing to do | :07:48. | :07:52.
the final sacrifice and these five have just done it. All the bars | :07:52. | :08:02.
:08:02. | :08:03. | ||
have got to say, you are brave, if you're a tough, if you are the best. | :08:03. | :08:06.
Well, the events of this week are not only difficult for the military | :08:06. | :08:08.
communities currently serving in Afghanistan, but also for those | :08:08. | :08:11.
whose relatives have paid a big price for their involvement in the | :08:11. | :08:18.
war. Robert Light's son, Matthew, was seriously injured in January by | :08:18. | :08:26.
an IED, an unexploded bomb. He joins us now in the studio. How is | :08:26. | :08:31.
Matthew? He is doing really well. He is recovering from his injuries. | :08:31. | :08:36.
He is still death in one ear, but he is hoping to return to his unit | :08:36. | :08:40.
in the next few months. In the meantime, you will have been left | :08:40. | :08:47.
looking at events of this week, thinking, we are lucky. Yes. It | :08:47. | :08:53.
brings little back, that moment of the news coming through, all the | :08:53. | :08:57.
memories of the knock on the door, it all comes flooding back here you | :08:57. | :09:03.
realise how lucky you are her and she feels so much for the family's. | :09:04. | :09:08.
I feel for Matty and this must be, apart from his injuries, the most | :09:08. | :09:13.
terrible thing to try and adjust to, because he lost his comrade but | :09:13. | :09:18.
also his best friend in the incident. Yes. They worked closely | :09:18. | :09:25.
together. It is a horrendous thing to happen, not only to yourself, | :09:25. | :09:30.
but to see a colleague blown up as well. But then every time something | :09:30. | :09:35.
happens, that reignite so's emotions. I suppose, a young lads | :09:35. | :09:41.
who went out to do his job, I am not putting words into his mouth, | :09:41. | :09:46.
but does he ask, why have I survived and by a friend died? | :09:46. | :09:49.
is the sort of thing that goes through your mind and rightly so. | :09:49. | :09:54.
You think, it is all because I wasn't the right place and a John | :09:54. | :09:58.
was in the wrong place and that is just how it was. But Matthew was | :09:58. | :10:04.
lucky. He survived, could have lost limbs quite easily, but the gods | :10:04. | :10:08.
were with him at the time. This is a terrible week for Yorkshire, but | :10:08. | :10:13.
we must remember such a fine tradition of many regiments in our | :10:13. | :10:17.
county. There are many fine young men and women out there who come | :10:17. | :10:23.
from here. There are and their young. There are only 19, but they | :10:23. | :10:30.
are doing things that more mature adults would be frightened to do. | :10:30. | :10:33.
Because they're really well trained. The Army have looked after these | :10:33. | :10:37.
guys really well. They're doing the country proud, they're model | :10:37. | :10:43.
citizens out there. Thank you very much for telling us your story. He | :10:43. | :10:50.
mentioned they are very young, but the most incredible tributes has | :10:50. | :10:56.
comment to the programme. We will have it at the end of the programme. | :10:56. | :11:03.
And so is your story. In two months, people in | :11:03. | :11:05.
Yorkshire's four biggest cities will vote in a referendum which | :11:05. | :11:09.
could lead to the biggest change in the way we're governed in a | :11:09. | :11:11.
generation. If you live in Leeds, Sheffield, Bradford or Wakefield | :11:11. | :11:14.
you'll choose whether you'd like your city to be run by an elected | :11:14. | :11:17.
mayor. People in Doncaster will vote on whether to keep one. Look | :11:17. | :11:20.
North has commissioned a detailed opinion poll of 2,500 people in all | :11:20. | :11:23.
five places. Last week we asked them whether their city should have | :11:23. | :11:30.
an elected mayor. 53% said yes, 37% said no. 10% didn't know. More on | :11:30. | :11:40.
:11:40. | :11:44. | ||
that in a moment. But first, what is an elected mayor? What do they | :11:44. | :11:47.
do? 90% of people suggested they weren't sure. So here's a quick | :11:47. | :11:56.
lesson. Phil Bodmer has the details. When you hear the word Mayor, this | :11:57. | :12:02.
is probably what such springs to mind, the chain, the ropes, a | :12:02. | :12:06.
ceremonial position. But what more than 2 million people living in | :12:06. | :12:09.
five cities in Yorkshire will photon and a month of May is | :12:09. | :12:13.
something different. Once there has have chosen their own Mayor for a | :12:14. | :12:19.
decade, currently Boris Johnson. You're's reedy Giuliani also became | :12:19. | :12:29.
:12:29. | :12:32. | ||
very well known after 9/11. To explain very simply what difference | :12:32. | :12:37.
an elected Mayor next in a council, we're using something we're all | :12:37. | :12:42.
familiar with. At the moment, councillors and council leader city | :12:42. | :12:45.
Chambers like this, they discuss the issues and take the key | :12:45. | :12:51.
decisions, but under the mayoral system, one person will have sole | :12:51. | :12:55.
responsibility for the council budget. The newly elected Mayor | :12:55. | :13:00.
will have a say on schools, libraries and on social services. | :13:00. | :13:04.
They can also have a say, if they wish, on the way our bins are | :13:04. | :13:10.
collected. And that is what opponents of elected mayors fear. | :13:10. | :13:15.
In councils like Bradford, 90 members oversee decisions. An | :13:15. | :13:19.
elected Mayor has much more power, his or her decisions are final. It | :13:19. | :13:29.
:13:29. | :13:42. | ||
often for four years and cannot be Boris Johnson good people on their | :13:42. | :13:46.
bikes. So that is what an elected mayor | :13:46. | :13:50.
does. In a moment we'll get the views of Cities Minister Greg Clark | :13:50. | :13:53.
and we'll be speaking live to the leader of Bradford Council, Ian | :13:53. | :13:56.
Greenwood, but first James Vincent reports on what you've been telling | :13:56. | :14:06.
:14:06. | :14:09. | ||
us in the poll. The polling company asked groups of people whether they | :14:09. | :14:16.
want it a directly elected official. In Bradford, 54% of people said yes. | :14:16. | :14:22.
36% said No. In Leeds, even more were in favour. In Sheffield, | :14:22. | :14:27.
slightly less clear cut. In Wakefield, it was rarely in the | :14:27. | :14:33.
balance. We also asked 500 people in a Doncaster or where they | :14:33. | :14:36.
already have an elected official whether they wanted to keep one. | :14:36. | :14:43.
Support here was highest of all. But perhaps worryingly most said | :14:43. | :14:50.
they did not know a referendum was on the way. Not a clue. I do not | :14:50. | :14:58.
know. Would you know anything about the referendum? No. Sheffield may | :14:58. | :15:04.
be getting an elected official. would be quite surprised that they | :15:04. | :15:11.
did not know. 90% in our Paul said they had little information. People | :15:11. | :15:17.
will be hearing a lot more about it before May. The real test of public | :15:17. | :15:20.
opinion will be then. All three party leaders in | :15:20. | :15:23.
Westminster are in favour of mayors for our big cities. But it's a | :15:23. | :15:26.
different story among many of the council leaders here. We'll be | :15:26. | :15:29.
hearing from one of them in a moment. Earlier I spoke to the | :15:29. | :15:33.
government minister for cities, Greg Clark. I asked him what his | :15:33. | :15:43.
reaction was to the poll? It shows there is a big debate to be had. We | :15:43. | :15:49.
said we went every city in the country to have a real debate about | :15:49. | :15:55.
what is the best way to be governed. This shows people are up for that | :15:55. | :16:02.
and it should be up to the people. Is it too much power in one | :16:02. | :16:09.
person's hands? You also have other as their to scrutinise. He will | :16:09. | :16:18.
also have public scrutiny. They will have a mandate Boughton for by | :16:18. | :16:23.
the people. They will have a chance to do that and then a have a chance | :16:23. | :16:29.
to be a national figure to tell ministers what they want for their | :16:29. | :16:33.
city and they have ever presence on the international side. I have been | :16:33. | :16:38.
a minister for a couple of years and you always take a call from the | :16:38. | :16:43.
nature of London. A would you take the call from Sheffield or | :16:43. | :16:50.
Bradford? Absolutely. My point is it ought to be that person and they | :16:50. | :16:55.
should be so well known and vigorous in standing up for their | :16:55. | :16:58.
cities that they should be national figures. | :16:58. | :17:01.
Listening to that was Ian Greenwood, the Leader of Bradford Council, who | :17:01. | :17:10.
is opposed to the idea of more mayors. I do not believe we need an | :17:10. | :17:19.
elected official. We are a diverse community. To get one person to | :17:20. | :17:29.
encapsulate the whole community is wrong. Too many people know who you | :17:29. | :17:36.
were as council leader? You tell me. Many people, a large people in | :17:36. | :17:40.
Bradford know who I am. That is a matter of how I do the job and not | :17:40. | :17:48.
what the job is. The talent and commitment of the individual | :17:48. | :17:52.
leading the place is what is important. There have been bad and | :17:52. | :17:57.
good leaders. I think it is the character of the individual rather | :17:57. | :18:04.
than the strictures. My belief is that this is a smokescreen to de -- | :18:04. | :18:12.
disguise the massive cuts being made. If Boris Johnson were rings, | :18:12. | :18:16.
somebody to react. That should be the same for the city's was that | :18:16. | :18:20.
they would have a name and an identity to say get this problem | :18:21. | :18:30.
:18:31. | :18:34. | ||
sorted. I hope they would take a call from a knee. -- from me. | :18:34. | :18:39.
of people are in favour of this system. I do not think that is the | :18:39. | :18:46.
key finding. 90% of people said they do not know enough about it. | :18:46. | :18:56.
:18:56. | :19:14. | ||
We need to educate people and In other news now, a Labour MP has | :19:14. | :19:17.
been sentenced after a brawl in a House of Commons bar. Eric Joyce | :19:17. | :19:19.
was today fined and banned from licensed premises for three months. | :19:19. | :19:22.
The 51-year-old former soldier admitted common assault in court | :19:22. | :19:24.
after headbutting Pudsey Conservative MP Stuart Andrew and | :19:24. | :19:32.
attacking three other MPs last month in the Strangers Bar. | :19:32. | :19:35.
appreciate the guilty plea and the remorse he has shown for the | :19:35. | :19:41.
serious nature of his actions. No person should a salt another. I do | :19:41. | :19:46.
not harbour any credit or ill will towards him. Any personal | :19:46. | :19:50.
challenges he faces can be overcome. 23-year-old Afzal Arif is facing a | :19:51. | :19:53.
life sentence after being found guilty of the murder in Leeds last | :19:53. | :19:57.
August of Gavin Clarke. He was shot in the face and neck in a row over | :19:58. | :20:00.
his cousin. The incident sparked two nights of disturbances in the | :20:00. | :20:03.
Chapeltown and Harehills districts. Sheffield Council is continuing to | :20:03. | :20:07.
discuss its budget tonight for the next financial year. The meeting | :20:07. | :20:09.
started this afternoon with campaigners staging a rally outside | :20:09. | :20:12.
Sheffield town hall. The local authority says it needs to save 55 | :20:13. | :20:15.
million in the next year which is the biggest saving in Yorkshire | :20:16. | :20:19.
councils. There could be up to 550 job losses. | :20:19. | :20:22.
The Conservatives are the latest party to choose a candidate for the | :20:22. | :20:25.
Bradford West Parliamentary by- election. Jackie Whitely is a local | :20:26. | :20:28.
businesswoman who stood in Rotherham at the 2010 General | :20:28. | :20:31.
Election. The by-election has been called because sitting Labour MP | :20:31. | :20:35.
Marsha Singh has resigned because of ill health. Polling day is in | :20:35. | :20:45.
three weeks time on March 29. local resident and business owner, | :20:45. | :20:48.
I think people in Bradford West will appreciate the Coalition are | :20:48. | :20:58.
:20:58. | :21:04. | ||
doing a marvellous job in dealing with Labour's debt. | :21:04. | :21:07.
Sheffield's Jessica Ennis has won silver in the pentathlon at the | :21:07. | :21:09.
World Indoor Championships in Istanbul. She had a really up and | :21:09. | :21:19.
down day, but just couldn't quite get the gold. In the biggest year | :21:19. | :21:26.
of her career, she was defending her indoor pentathlon title. She | :21:27. | :21:36.
was given a good early lead over her rivals. Next up, the high jump. | :21:36. | :21:43.
Another strong event. She was solid but not spectacular. She failed to | :21:43. | :21:50.
clear one-metre 90. The shot was better. She got a personal best | :21:50. | :21:55.
with her final throw. The lead remained with her and her coach | :21:55. | :22:00.
might have expected it to go. She never quite nailed it in the long | :22:00. | :22:04.
jump and slipped back to third place. The reigning world champion | :22:04. | :22:12.
had the lead. She ran brilliantly in the final race but the gap was | :22:12. | :22:19.
only three seconds, not enough. Work to do ahead of the Olympics. | :22:19. | :22:25.
It means she is on the way up. With some personal bests. Good luck. | :22:25. | :22:28.
Our three top Yorkshire Rugby Union clubs launch their Championship | :22:28. | :22:30.
play-off campaigns this weekend. Tonight at Castle Park, Doncaster | :22:30. | :22:33.
Knights host Bristol in their opening match. Leeds Carnegie start | :22:34. | :22:39.
with a tough trip to Cornish Pirates tomorrow. Rotherham Titans | :22:39. | :22:43.
meanwhile are at home to Bedford. The Titans are ranked as outsiders | :22:43. | :22:46.
by many pundits. But they've got a surprise in store for anyone who | :22:46. | :22:53.
thinks their modest Clifton Lane Stadium is a bar to promotion. | :22:53. | :23:03.
is not true. We can go up. We at busy with our preparations and we | :23:03. | :23:07.
will have the facilities in place. The motivation is there for the | :23:07. | :23:17.
:23:17. | :23:19. | ||
players. It is going to be quite nice this | :23:19. | :23:24.
weekend. The high pressure is building so some dry weather. But | :23:24. | :23:32.
some drizzle for the Pennines tomorrow. Not bad for Whitby and | :23:32. | :23:42.
:23:42. | :23:43. | ||
Scarborough. They will be a lot of cloud, possibly thick enough for | :23:43. | :23:49.
drizzle at times. A big area of high pressure. It is no stranger to | :23:49. | :23:54.
this weather chat. It will be with us all weekend and for much of next | :23:54. | :24:00.
week as well. Many areas seeing a lot of dry weather apart from a | :24:00. | :24:04.
little bit of drizzle at times over the Pennines. That should fizzle as | :24:04. | :24:10.
we move into tomorrow. We have had some reasonable temperature. There | :24:10. | :24:16.
is quite a bit of cloud out there. There is a weak front and a band of | :24:16. | :24:20.
drizzle coming down from the north. It is currently across County | :24:20. | :24:25.
Durham. It will push across Yorkshire. Certainly over the | :24:25. | :24:31.
Pennines we do feel quite damp and drizzly with some light rain. It | :24:31. | :24:37.
will be misty as well with some fog. A mild one with loads of nine | :24:38. | :24:45.
Celsius in Doncaster. Quite a breezy night to come. The sun will | :24:45. | :24:54.
rise in the morning. The coast will have a lovely weekend. A lot of | :24:55. | :24:59.
cloud first thing further west. Drizzle in the Pennine areas which | :24:59. | :25:03.
it should gradually die away. Becoming brighter through the | :25:03. | :25:11.
afternoon. The best of the cloud breaks will be further east. | :25:11. | :25:14.
Temperatures will respond. The average is around nine or ten | :25:14. | :25:24.
:25:24. | :25:25. | ||
Celsius. We could see 16 Celsius somewhere along the Yorkshire coast. | :25:25. | :25:32.
The cloud the West will be nearer 12 Celsius. Looking further ahead. | :25:32. | :25:36.
Sunday is quite promising. Temperatures around 15 Celsius. | :25:37. | :25:41.
Next week, a lot of cloud but the emphasis is a predominantly dry | :25:41. | :25:46.
weather and wild weather for all of us. That is the forecast. | :25:47. | :25:50.
Well, let's return to our top story now, and the reaction to the death | :25:50. | :25:57.
of the five soldiers killed in Afghanistan. | :25:57. | :26:00.
It has been a terrible week for Yorkshire with the loss of five | :26:00. | :26:03.
soldiers from one of the county's oldest regiments. We leave you | :26:03. | :26:06.
tonight with a tribute sent to Christa and me on you tube. It was | :26:06. | :26:10.
posted by the friends of just one of the soldiers who died but for us | :26:10. | :26:14.
it speaks for all of them and sums up the tragic loss of young life. | :26:14. | :26:16.
It is incredibly moving. On Facebook, Danny Wilford tells | :26:16. | :26:19. |
