Regiment have been out in the rain, raising money in memory of their

colleagues killed in Afghanistan. They were invited by Huddersfield

Giants to hold a collection before the start of today's Rugby League

month, section men from The Yorkshire Regiment were killed in

Afghanistan and three of them were from Huddersfield. The town has

Police are appealing for witnesses following a car crash in each

Yorkshire in which a pensioner from Europe was killed. Shelia Stavert-

Lee, who was 70, was killed in a head-on collision near Goole on

Saturday. A man and his 14-year-old son both from Birmingham were also

killed. His wife and daughter were airlifted to Leeds General

Infirmary where there are in a critical condition.

The number of genetic diseases for which newborn babies are screened

is to double in parts of the region in a pilot scheme been run by the

Department of Health. Around 700,000 babies in the UK are tested

for conditions such as cystic fibrosis every year. Now, an

additional five rare disorders will be looked at in Leeds and Sheffield.

The tests are performed by midwife usually when the baby is one week

old. Early diagnosis can lead to better support for parents.

Any scheme in Europe is trying to tackle the problems of poor diet,

lack of exercise and lack of respect among young people. It is

turning unused land in the heart of the City's Estates into vegetable
