Hello. Welcome to the programme. Of A Yorkshire village reacts to | :00:15. | :00:18.
tragedy at the National. The owners of According to Pete call for fewer | :00:18. | :00:28.
:00:28. | :00:34. | ||
horses in the race and vow never to We'll be speaking to a top vet | :00:34. | :00:39.
about injuries at Aintree. Look North unveils a confidential report | :00:39. | :00:43.
about the effectiveness of drug treatment centres. And giantkillers | :00:43. | :00:46.
Fev land the prize draw of Wigan in the Challenge Cup after seeing off | :00:46. | :00:53.
Superleague's Castleford Tigers. It has been a fine start to the wake. | :00:53. | :00:57.
This was taken near Temple Newsome in the afternoon. But there is some | :00:57. | :01:07.
:01:07. | :01:13. | ||
But first tonight the man who trained According to Pete - the | :01:13. | :01:16.
North Yorkshire horse killed at Saturday's Grand National - has | :01:16. | :01:19.
said it was a freak accident. The horse suffered a broken shoulder at | :01:19. | :01:22.
Bechers Brook and had to be put down. His owners from Helperby near | :01:22. | :01:25.
Thirsk have said they'll never enter another horse in the race. In | :01:25. | :01:28.
a moment we'll be speaking to a vet who specialises in treating | :01:28. | :01:32.
racehorses but first Ian White has this. Everything all right with | :01:32. | :01:42.
Pete? It was supposed to be a day of celebration. The has one has a | :01:42. | :01:47.
right chance. But for the owners of According to Pete, Saturday's Grand | :01:47. | :01:52.
National ended in tragedy and upset, as a horse suffered a broken | :01:52. | :01:57.
shoulder when it has brought down by another horse when it was | :01:57. | :02:00.
jumping than the Tories Berger's book for the second time go stop | :02:00. | :02:04.
According to Pete's trainer Martin Jefferson was back of the stable's | :02:05. | :02:11.
today. He said there was no other option but to put Dorstone. When | :02:11. | :02:21.
:02:21. | :02:22. | ||
they break bones like that they have got to be humanely destroyed. | :02:22. | :02:32.
:02:32. | :02:35. | ||
He has been a dream to own. We wish that we still had him. We do. | :02:35. | :02:38.
Stuart's Gold Cup winner, Synchronised, was also badly | :02:38. | :02:42.
injured and had to be destroyed. The deaths bring the number of | :02:42. | :02:45.
horses killed and the Grand National and the last 50 years, to | :02:45. | :02:49.
36. And once again there are questions about how safe the race | :02:49. | :02:55.
is. They have done a lot at the course and the jumps are good, the | :02:55. | :02:59.
only fault we can think of is that there are too many horses, 40, | :02:59. | :03:05.
which is maybe too many. Follow laws of racing question whether | :03:05. | :03:09.
changing the Grand National would do any good. If you change that it | :03:09. | :03:14.
would not be the National. It was a very big field. 40 is a lot of | :03:14. | :03:20.
courses. I know that horses do enjoy tackling these courses but | :03:20. | :03:26.
the Grand National in particular is very severe. At Aintree, course | :03:26. | :03:29.
officials have promised a thorough review of everything that happened | :03:29. | :03:39.
in the race, that cost According to Pete his life. It is a sad fact of | :03:39. | :03:43.
racing that horses are put down after suffering from an injury. | :03:43. | :03:46.
Earlier I spoke to Alastair Kay, an equine surgeon at Minster | :03:46. | :03:54.
Veterinary Practice in Poppleton near York to ask him why. | :03:54. | :03:59.
biggest problem is the type of fracture or the loss sustains. | :03:59. | :04:06.
Certainly, different parts of the leg, you can treat horses back to | :04:06. | :04:11.
breeding are racing, but with the fractures we heard about at the | :04:11. | :04:15.
weekend, these tend to be higher on the leg and it is such a heavy | :04:15. | :04:18.
animal that is physically impossible to reconstruct that part | :04:18. | :04:25.
of the leg. Why can you not take the weight of the loss of the leg? | :04:25. | :04:32.
There is a reason, that you cannot sling your horse off the ground. | :04:32. | :04:37.
Our absolutely. One of the biggest problems with slinging dos is that | :04:38. | :04:41.
they developed problems with the lungs and pneumonia, and the | :04:41. | :04:46.
temperament, many horses will not tolerate being placed in a swing | :04:46. | :04:52.
because they might have got less control over what they do. You love | :04:52. | :04:57.
dossers that UK, are you any favour of the ban on horse racing, as some | :04:57. | :05:05.
have suggested? -- you love the horses that you treat. With all | :05:05. | :05:08.
racing and training and with athletes were going to see it at | :05:08. | :05:13.
the Olympics, we have got fine- tuned athletes, and some of those | :05:13. | :05:16.
will have injuries during the competition and we have to take | :05:16. | :05:21.
those into account, and try to come out with the best result for the | :05:21. | :05:26.
owners, trainers, horses themselves and the general public. But racing | :05:26. | :05:36.
:05:36. | :05:38. | ||
should continue? Absolutely, yes. The Labour peer Lord Ahmed of | :05:38. | :05:45.
Rotherham has been suspended from the Labour party. Labour say he is | :05:45. | :05:48.
under investigation after a report in a newspaper in Pakistan that he | :05:48. | :05:51.
was offering a reward for the arrests of President Obama and | :05:51. | :05:54.
George Bush. The comments were reportedly a reaction to the news | :05:54. | :05:57.
that the US has offered a $10 million reward for the capture of a | :05:57. | :06:00.
terrorist leader. Well, Lord Ahmed joins us live now from our | :06:00. | :06:03.
Westminster studio. If you did not to say these words, these are an | :06:03. | :06:05.
incredible misinterpretation, so tell us, clearly, what you said. | :06:05. | :06:10.
spoke about investment in this particular town by people from | :06:10. | :06:16.
Britain, I talk about that. It was a 40 minute speech. If you want me | :06:16. | :06:21.
to do that I am happy to do it, but what I did mention was the legal | :06:22. | :06:26.
war in Iraq and the war crimes committed in Iraq and Afghanistan. | :06:26. | :06:30.
I talked about the International Criminal Court and people | :06:30. | :06:36.
responsible for war crimes, whether African, Asian or Western leaders | :06:36. | :06:41.
they should be treated equally and be brought to justice. You have a | :06:41. | :06:45.
reputation for seeing things as they are, should you not have been | :06:45. | :06:51.
more careful bearing in mind where you were? I was born in Pakistan. | :06:51. | :07:01.
:07:01. | :07:02. | ||
People still very sensitive about lots of issues. -- people are still. | :07:02. | :07:08.
The Pakistani courts have found a terrorist not guilty with all the | :07:08. | :07:11.
charges put to him. I do not have anything to do with the man. I do | :07:11. | :07:20.
not support him, I have not met him, but you have to be sensitive in | :07:20. | :07:25.
what you say. There are many young people in Bradford, in Yorkshire, | :07:25. | :07:32.
who feel angry because of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. A but the | :07:32. | :07:38.
Labour Party clearly do not agree. How are you going to re-establish | :07:38. | :07:42.
your reputation, that you did not say these words about George Bush | :07:42. | :07:47.
and President Obama? I respect the Labour Party and abide by all of | :07:47. | :07:56.
its rules. When I came back from Pakistan, I landed, and immediately, | :07:56. | :08:02.
I phoned up Baroness Royle, and I said to her that I had not only | :08:02. | :08:07.
been misquoted and taken out of context but their were lives, I | :08:07. | :08:14.
never mentioned President Obama. I am happy to appear before any | :08:14. | :08:24.
:08:24. | :08:27. | ||
committee. I have been a Labour Party member for 37 years. Later on | :08:27. | :08:31.
Look North: The disabled man who can't find a train to take him and | :08:31. | :08:41.
:08:41. | :08:41. | ||
his scooter to meet the queen. Next tonight, BBC Look North has | :08:41. | :08:43.
obtained a confidential report which shows drug addicts are | :08:43. | :08:46.
spending years at a treatment centre in Halifax with limited | :08:46. | :08:56.
:08:56. | :08:57. | ||
chances of recovery. The study, by Huddersfield University, looked at | :08:57. | :09:00.
the outcomes for heroin and crack cocaine users at Calderdale | :09:00. | :09:02.
Substance Misuse Service. Experts say the results are disappointing | :09:02. | :09:05.
but reflect a national problem. Our Health Correspondent Jamie Coulson | :09:05. | :09:10.
reports. It took away his life, it took away his social interaction | :09:10. | :09:17.
with his family and the use of the heroine eventually killed him. | :09:17. | :09:22.
Marie Richardson lost a son, Keith, at the age of 33, from a methadone | :09:22. | :09:27.
overdose after years of battling addiction. I was hoped that Keith | :09:27. | :09:35.
would get better and stop using drugs but in the last two years and | :09:35. | :09:45.
:09:45. | :09:47. | ||
prayed that God would take him.. The addiction had blighted his | :09:47. | :09:52.
adult life. Now, Look North has got hold of a report carried out by | :09:52. | :09:55.
Huddersfield University looking at what happens to other people who | :09:55. | :10:00.
come here, looking for help, and the results make interesting | :10:00. | :10:06.
reading. It found the majority of people continue to use heroin and | :10:06. | :10:11.
crack cocaine and every year on the treatment programme raises the odds | :10:11. | :10:16.
of recovery by just 7%, and that it would take 10 years before the | :10:16. | :10:21.
chances of recovery even double. The report concludes that, whilst | :10:21. | :10:26.
the services good at keeping people in treatment, those gains and | :10:26. | :10:32.
recovery are very slow. In those two years, someone will have taken | :10:32. | :10:41.
an overdose, or taking suicide, in that 10 years. 10 years is too long. | :10:41. | :10:47.
It is at the same time horrifying and not surprising. Those results, | :10:47. | :10:52.
people not getting off drugs, but at the same time, called ordeal is | :10:52. | :10:56.
not an exception, it is symbolic of what is going on in the rest of the | :10:56. | :11:06.
:11:06. | :11:13. | ||
country. -- called the dial. -- Calderdale. The NHS in Calderdale | :11:13. | :11:23.
:11:23. | :11:24. | ||
But, for Anne Marie, these findings confirm the fears that she has long | :11:24. | :11:29.
held. So on thing needs to be done. The treatment for these people is | :11:29. | :11:39.
:11:39. | :11:41. | ||
too long. It is people's like you are talking about. -- lives. We're | :11:41. | :11:44.
joined now by Dr Michael Ross who spent many years working with drug | :11:44. | :11:48.
users. You had a rather different approach. Some would say that you | :11:48. | :11:53.
were quite behalf with your patients. I did not feel that I was | :11:53. | :11:59.
tough, rather, that I was rigorous, and they would enter into detailed | :11:59. | :12:02.
discussions with the patient to find out exactly what they wanted | :12:03. | :12:11.
to do, to help them achieve that. We will try to get back to Dr Ross, | :12:11. | :12:18.
but at the moment, we're going to have to leave that. We have some | :12:19. | :12:28.
:12:29. | :12:29. | ||
other Newswatch unit. -- news for you now. A man and woman have | :12:29. | :12:32.
appeared in court today charged with the murder of their baby girl. | :12:32. | :12:35.
Krystal Davison was just seven weeks old when she died in the | :12:35. | :12:38.
early hours of Friday. Today her parents Jessica Marie Hopkinson and | :12:38. | :12:40.
Lee Michael Davison from Pontefract made a brief appearance at the | :12:40. | :12:43.
town's magistrates court. Olivia Richwald was there. Only seven | :12:43. | :12:45.
weeks old, this is the baby girl from Pontefract, who died in the | :12:45. | :12:49.
early hours of Friday, her parents now charged with her mother. -- | :12:49. | :12:58.
murder. Doctors were unable to save the baby's life and she died in the | :12:58. | :13:04.
early as a trader. Today, Jessica Hopkinson and the baby's father, | :13:04. | :13:08.
Lee Davison, made their first brief appearance at the town's | :13:08. | :13:13.
magistrates' court. The couple were visibly upset as they were lead | :13:13. | :13:17.
into the court by a security guard. The couple did not acknowledge each | :13:17. | :13:22.
other but spoke quietly to confirm their name and address. The hearing | :13:22. | :13:26.
lasted less than five minutes. Magistrates said the case to Leeds | :13:26. | :13:31.
Crown Court, where it will be held on Wednesday, which will be miss | :13:31. | :13:41.

Hopkins and's 19th Party. -- Miss Hopkinson. The new MP for Bradford | :13:44. | :13:47.
West George Galloway has been sworn into the House of Commons this | :13:47. | :13:50.
afternoon Galloway who represents the Respect party, won a shock | :13:50. | :13:53.
victory in a bye-election two weeks ago with the majority of more than | :13:53. | :13:55.
ten thousand votes. It follows the resignation of Labour's Marsha | :13:55. | :14:01.
Singh. The publisher of the Halifax Courier and Scarborough Evening | :14:01. | :14:04.
News has announced that the newspapers will go from daily to | :14:04. | :14:07.
weekly editions later this year. Johnston press says the move is | :14:07. | :14:10.
part of a relaunch of all of its regional papers. The company, which | :14:10. | :14:13.
also produces the Leeds-based Yorkshire Post and Evening Post, | :14:13. | :14:22.
says more changes are likely. We can go back to Dr Michael Ross, who | :14:22. | :14:26.
pioneered different kinds of work with drug users. You said you had a | :14:26. | :14:36.
:14:36. | :14:41. | ||
You describe it as brutal. What I tried to do was provide a rigorous | :14:41. | :14:45.
and detailed approach, so that by sitting down with the patient, we | :14:45. | :14:51.
could work out a plan that would work for the patient, and find the | :14:51. | :14:57.
help the patient needed to become drugs free and also medication free | :14:57. | :15:02.
as soon as possible. You believe too many people are automatically | :15:02. | :15:10.
put on to methadone, which is a legal substitute. I did not quite | :15:10. | :15:16.
hear that. Methadone has a place and is important as a medication, | :15:16. | :15:22.
but it is not the only one. It is appropriate for some people, for | :15:22. | :15:27.
some people some of the time. But patients need to move on. They want | :15:27. | :15:34.
to move on. Most of from your audience will be surprised to hear | :15:34. | :15:40.
that most addicts hate being an addict. They say they are sick of | :15:40. | :15:44.
it and they want to stop being dependent on substances and they | :15:44. | :15:49.
want help to come off street drugs and then prescribed medication. | :15:49. | :15:56.
Very briefly, the difference in your treatment was that you tested | :15:56. | :16:02.
your patients to make sure they were clean. Absolutely. It is the | :16:02. | :16:07.
mainstay of treatment. I am very disappointed to see that government | :16:07. | :16:16.
policy does not mention testing in the extensive guidelines. To try to | :16:16. | :16:21.
treat drug dependency patients without testing is like offering a | :16:21. | :16:28.
similar service without a set of scales. Thank you. | :16:28. | :16:33.
A disabled man from Keighley is asking for better access on trains | :16:34. | :16:40.
for people who use motorised scooters. David Lamb was badly | :16:40. | :16:45.
injured and was invited to a royal garden party, but he cannot take | :16:45. | :16:51.
his scooter on the train. A special delivery for David and | :16:51. | :17:00.
Geraldine Lambe. An invitation from the Queen to a Diamond garden party. | :17:00. | :17:05.
I got a call from a friend out of the blue about going to the garden | :17:05. | :17:15.
:17:15. | :17:16. | ||
party. I asked my wife if she wanted to go. I certainly did. | :17:16. | :17:20.
bid was injured in an industrial accident and spent months in | :17:20. | :17:25.
hospital after receiving multiple injuries from a fall and he had a | :17:25. | :17:31.
leg amputated. He relies on a powered scooter to get about. | :17:31. | :17:37.
a way of getting around. I cannot walk so far with two sticks. | :17:37. | :17:43.
couple plan to travel by train to London, taking the scooter. But | :17:43. | :17:48.
there is a problem. The scooter is allowed on the train between Leeds | :17:48. | :17:54.
and London, but not on local services between Keighley and Leeds. | :17:54. | :18:00.
There should be something. Northern Rail says it cannot carry scooters | :18:00. | :18:05.
unless they can be folded up and carried on as luggage. David is not | :18:05. | :18:11.
the only disabled person. There are a lot of disabled people. It has | :18:11. | :18:18.
got my back-up. I do not think it should be like that. Northern Rail | :18:18. | :18:22.
said there are valid reasons why they cannot allow motorised | :18:22. | :18:29.
scooters. They are designed to go on the road, shopping centres, but | :18:29. | :18:34.
they are not designed to go up the steep ramps on to train, especially | :18:34. | :18:39.
the incline at the top of the ramp, where they tend to get stuck. | :18:39. | :18:44.
couple hoped to make the date with royalty, but they are exploring | :18:44. | :18:51.
alternative means of transport. Sport. I love to go to the Keepmoat | :18:51. | :18:57.
Stadium, home of Doncaster, it is a friendly club. On Saturday, I | :18:57. | :19:01.
witnessed the worst refereeing performance I have seen. It is not | :19:01. | :19:07.
easy. When I need help, I use these. This is the first example. He was | :19:07. | :19:12.
tripped outside, I know he dived inside. But there is where the trip | :19:12. | :19:20.
took place and penalty was given. The first bad call. I can show you | :19:20. | :19:25.
the next incident. The cross is good. Nothing wrong with this. But, | :19:25. | :19:29.
the goalkeeper is under pressure and the guy in there, with his | :19:29. | :19:37.
hands, effectively throws it into the back of the net. I understand | :19:37. | :19:44.
why Doncaster got upset. They were bad calls, but the result did not | :19:44. | :19:49.
lead to relegation. Some say because of the signing of star | :19:49. | :19:55.
players from Willie McKay. Such as El-Hadji Diouf. They have no | :19:55. | :19:59.
passion for Doncaster. The chairman defended his decision to bring | :19:59. | :20:07.
Willie McKay into the club. It if you look at the last season when we | :20:07. | :20:13.
won a couple of games in 25, we needed a radical change. It was a | :20:13. | :20:18.
last throw of the dice. I knew we would go down anyway. Let's give it | :20:18. | :20:24.
to go. We will lose money and have to start again. I used to aspire to | :20:24. | :20:31.
get into League One when I was in the Conference League. That is why | :20:31. | :20:35.
we liked him, he tells it as cities. Willie McKay is controversial. | :20:35. | :20:42.
Today he added another dimension to what is going on. Suggesting the | :20:42. | :20:49.
chairman may walk away. I feel sorry for the supporters, I feel | :20:49. | :20:59.
really sorry for John Ryan. I hope he stays with the club. It may not | :20:59. | :21:03.
happen. We know Doncaster will be in League | :21:03. | :21:07.
One next season, will the Sheffield clubs pass them in the opposite | :21:07. | :21:12.
direction? United increased their advantage over Wednesday on | :21:12. | :21:16.
Saturday. It looked like Sheffield United | :21:16. | :21:22.
might slip up in a bid for automatic promotion. Kevin Lisbie | :21:22. | :21:28.
put Leyton Orient ahead. But then Williamson got them back to level. | :21:28. | :21:37.
And Michael Doyle found the bottom corner. Ched Evans added a third. | :21:37. | :21:43.
Sheffield Wednesday could not keep up the chase. They conceded early | :21:43. | :21:49.
on the way it Colchester. A had to make do with a single point, so | :21:49. | :21:53.
they are four points behind United. Chesterfield have been trawling | :21:53. | :21:58.
along the bottom this season. They looked like they might finally sink | :21:58. | :22:05.
when Hartlepool went ahead. But they took three points to keep them | :22:05. | :22:11.
afloat for now. Huddersfield's slide carried on and they are 5th | :22:11. | :22:21.
:22:21. | :22:26. | ||
after losing at Preston. They were for -- Cardiff got a 1-0 | :22:26. | :22:32.
win. Bradford were impressive against Northampton. It was down to | :22:32. | :22:37.
one man that sealed them a 3-1 victory. Roth room couldn't build | :22:37. | :22:43.
on their 1-0 lead at shrews brie. Three goals conceded. | :22:43. | :22:53.
There will be more action and news on a Late Kick Off. | :22:53. | :23:00.
One result leapt out of the Rugby League Challenge Cup matches like a | :23:00. | :23:04.
giant up and under. Classy Castleford, beaten by local rivals | :23:04. | :23:08.
Featherstone Rovers. Although Castleford fans will not agree, it | :23:08. | :23:15.
has given the cut such a boost for this afternoon's draw. We thus our | :23:15. | :23:21.
coach Darryl Powell and chief executive Craig Poskitt. | :23:21. | :23:26.
practice the players looked so relaxed and ready to go. We knew it | :23:26. | :23:30.
would be difficult, but we knew we had the players to get the winner. | :23:31. | :23:37.
How much has it helped to boost the players and give them that extra | :23:37. | :23:41.
knowing it was Castleford, the rivalry goes back decades. The of | :23:41. | :23:47.
course it does. It why it was such a big game, there hasn't been one | :23:47. | :23:53.
for such a long time, five years. The fans were desperate for it to | :23:53. | :23:57.
come around and to achieve the success was massive. The Act was a | :23:57. | :24:06.
key try and another one coming up. -- that was. The first one had an | :24:06. | :24:14.
outstanding finish. The crowd was over 4000. I love the name of the | :24:14. | :24:23.
stadium. It is called the Big Fella stadium. | :24:23. | :24:32.
That is sexist! It has a great atmosphere. We are moving on to | :24:32. | :24:36.
Wigan now. We would prefer to meet them in the final. I am sure they | :24:36. | :24:39.
them in the final. I am sure they will have the players fired up for | :24:39. | :24:44.
that one. Which can look at the draw. This is what it is all about. | :24:44. | :24:49.
Some good matches. One of them stands out. It is yours, Daryl | :24:49. | :24:59.
:24:59. | :24:59. | ||
Powell. We have looked after Ryan Chase, an outstanding player. Wigan | :24:59. | :25:03.
have a significant team and we will have to be outstanding to get a | :25:03. | :25:09.
result. The it might be more than 4000 at Wigan. | :25:09. | :25:14.
For a strange reason your voices are a little horse, gentlemen! | :25:14. | :25:20.
He is back. And good news about April, not good | :25:20. | :25:25.
news because it is unsettled, but rainfall and some people want the | :25:25. | :25:32.
rain. This picture is fantastic. It was taken close to Settle yesterday | :25:32. | :25:42.
:25:42. | :25:48. | ||
There will be rain later denied. Tomorrow, back to sunshine and | :25:48. | :25:53.
scattered showers. The area of low pressure which means bad weather | :25:53. | :25:58.
will probably win -- be with us until this time next week. Right | :25:58. | :26:05.
now, there is a lot of cloud. It should break up to an extent. There | :26:05. | :26:11.
will be some wet and windy weather later tonight. There could be some | :26:11. | :26:16.
ground frost before the wet weather, locally heavy rain, putsches in | :26:16. | :26:25.
after midnight, reaching the coast at 5am. They could be ground frost. | :26:25. | :26:35.
:26:35. | :26:37. | ||
It looks like a rotten commute first thing, especially if you are | :26:37. | :26:42.
out at the crack of dawn. The rain will move quickly clear in the | :26:42. | :26:48.
coast by 10am, when the skies will brighten up from the West. Sunshine | :26:48. | :26:55.
and scattered showers. The East, some places will become dry with a | :26:55. | :27:03.
pleasant afternoon sunshine. The temperatures around average. A | :27:03. | :27:07.
little bit cooler across the Pennines, where the showers could | :27:07. | :27:15.
be frequent through the late morning and into the afternoon. Not | :27:15. | :27:19.
too good for the rest of the week with a low pressure in charge. | :27:19. | :27:27.
There will be showers and longer outbreaks of rain. Up to Sunday, | :27:27. | :27:32.
straightforward, with sunshine but also a scattering of locally heavy | :27:32. | :27:36.
and thundery showers. And that will be the way of it for the rest of | :27:37. | :27:40. |
