Good evening and welcome to Friday's Look North. On the | :00:08. | :00:10.
programme tonight - Sheffield United's star striker gets five | :00:10. | :00:14.
years in jail. A jury convicts Ched Evans of raping a teenager who was | :00:14. | :00:17.
too drunk to consent to sex. We'll have all the reaction from | :00:17. | :00:20.
court and from Bramall Lane. Also tonight, snookered - the former | :00:20. | :00:23.
world champion Mark Williams comes under fire for a scathing message | :00:23. | :00:31.
about the Sheffield Crucible on Twitter. And Carry On Barbara. | :00:31. | :00:34.

First tonight - the Sheffield United footballer Ched Evans has | :01:00. | :01:03.
been sentenced to five years in jail after being found guilty of | :01:03. | :01:07.
raping a 19 year old woman who was too drunk to consent to sex. The | :01:07. | :01:09.
striker, who's a Welsh international, carried out the | :01:09. | :01:13.
attack at a hotel following a night out in Rhyl, north Wales. His co- | :01:13. | :01:16.
defendant, Port Vale defender Clayton McDonald, was found not | :01:16. | :01:21.
guilty of the same charge. Spencer Stokes reports from Caernarfon | :01:21. | :01:31.

Crown Court. A Sheffield United star whose career has been brought | :01:32. | :01:36.
tumbling down after what happened in a North Wales Hotel nearly a | :01:36. | :01:41.
year ago. When the 23 year old Ched Evans arrived in court he hoped he | :01:41. | :01:46.
would play against Milton Keynes tomorrow, but then he received a | :01:46. | :01:52.
five-year prison sentence for rape. There were emotional scenes in | :01:52. | :01:56.
court when the Co accused was found not guilty of the same charge. The | :01:57. | :02:02.
courtroom had to be cleared because of the celebrations, but minutes | :02:02. | :02:08.
later when the court reconvened Ched Evans was charged. And found | :02:08. | :02:13.
guilty. It happened in real last year, the victim had been drinking | :02:13. | :02:19.
in this bar and then got in a taxi and a company to Clayton McDonald | :02:19. | :02:26.
to the Premier in. Later McDonald called Ched Evans and he arrived. | :02:26. | :02:34.
Later both men admitted they had sex with the woman and the | :02:34. | :02:41.
defendant was later charged. The judge said he was satisfied to did | :02:41. | :02:48.
not set out to commit rape but did commit the crime, she was extremely | :02:48. | :02:52.
intoxicated and disorientated and in no fit state to content -- | :02:52. | :02:58.
consent to sex. She told police she had no memory of the incident. Ched | :02:58. | :03:03.
Evans claimed throughout the trial she was not very drunk. In a | :03:03. | :03:06.
statement today Ched Evans's lawyer said he is shocked and extremely | :03:07. | :03:10.
disappointed with the decision reached today by the jury to | :03:10. | :03:14.
convict him of the charge brought against him. He firmly maintains | :03:14. | :03:18.
his innocence in this matter and is being advised regarding an appeal | :03:18. | :03:24.
of the decision. In sentencing the striker to five years, the judge | :03:24. | :03:28.
told Ched Evans that there was no false or injury but possible long- | :03:28. | :03:33.
term psychological damage to the victim, whilst Clayton McDonald can | :03:33. | :03:39.
now resume his career with port while. Ched Evans is now beginning | :03:39. | :03:43.
a five-year prison sentence of which he must serve at least two- | :03:43. | :03:50.
and-a-half years. Our reporter trying to us now. Now let's get | :03:50. | :04:00.
:04:00. | :04:02. | ||
some reaction from Sheffield. little reaction so far, a short | :04:02. | :04:07.
statement on the website, they noted the verdict and say they | :04:07. | :04:11.
recognise the seriousness of these events. They wish to respond in a | :04:11. | :04:15.
responsible way once they have taken sufficient time to consider | :04:15. | :04:22.
the matter fully. No indication of what will be for Ched Evans's | :04:22. | :04:26.
future, but a lot of shock and surprise for the way this case has | :04:26. | :04:34.
been resolved. Tell us more about the background to Ched Evans. | :04:34. | :04:40.
grew up in Wales, starting as a youth player at Chester City. His | :04:40. | :04:45.
career got off the ground when he was taken on by Manchester City in | :04:45. | :04:49.
2007. He had a spell at Norwich before he came here to Bramall Lane | :04:49. | :04:56.
and Sheffield United in 2009. He moved to this area and it is fair | :04:56. | :04:59.
to say his first two seasons playing for Sheffield United were | :04:59. | :05:05.
not so impressive. He was hit by injuries and did not make much of a | :05:05. | :05:09.
mark but the last few months have been totally different. He has | :05:09. | :05:12.
certainly been an important part of the performance by the club this | :05:12. | :05:20.
season. He certainly has. 35 goals he has scored this season, | :05:20. | :05:26.
averaging nearly eight goal per game. A vital part of Sheffield | :05:26. | :05:29.
United's push for promotion, a crucial part of them getting to | :05:29. | :05:34.
second place and looking for promotion to the championship. Fans | :05:34. | :05:40.
and the club alike are shocked that their star player will not play for | :05:40. | :05:44.
them until the end of the season and it looks like he will not play | :05:44. | :05:54.
:05:54. | :05:55. | ||
for them for many years, if ever, in the future. Then later on, we | :05:55. | :06:03.
meet the inmate being let out of a prison to stop him reoffending. | :06:03. | :06:06.
Two people are being questioned by Police tonight after the death of a | :06:06. | :06:09.
teenager in York. It's thought she may have taken drugs. She's been | :06:09. | :06:12.
named as sixteen year old Poppy Rodgers. Police say a 21-year-old | :06:12. | :06:15.
man is also in a serious condition in York Hospital - he's also being | :06:15. | :06:25.
:06:25. | :06:26. | ||
linked with the death. Phil Bodmer has more. A lone police security | :06:26. | :06:30.
officer stands behind a cordon as the investigation continues into | :06:30. | :06:36.
the death of a 16 year-old girl late last night. Police were called | :06:36. | :06:41.
to this house at around a quarter past midnight after a report of a | :06:41. | :06:46.
critically ill teenager. She was rushed to York hospital but died in | :06:46. | :06:50.
the early hours of this morning despite the best efforts of medical | :06:50. | :06:57.
staff who tried to resuscitate her. She was a student and this | :06:57. | :07:00.
afternoon the college she studied at said they were sad to hear of | :07:01. | :07:05.
her death and that their thoughts are with her family and friends. | :07:05. | :07:08.
Neighbours at the scene told that they had not realised what had been | :07:08. | :07:13.
happening in the early hours. first thing I knew of it was when | :07:13. | :07:17.
my wife shouted to me and told me to come down because there was | :07:18. | :07:24.
police activity outside. It was all taped up. Now I have heard what has | :07:24. | :07:29.
happened, well, it is just a tragic loss. If it is drug-related, should | :07:29. | :07:35.
we have noticed more? It is tragic. The poor child's parents must be | :07:35. | :07:41.
distraught. This afternoon the police revealed a 21 the old man is | :07:41. | :07:45.
in a serious but stable condition in York hospital. He was taken | :07:45. | :07:50.
there by a friend and police are investigating'asked to be death of | :07:50. | :07:54.
poppy. A woman was arrested this afternoon and is being questioned | :07:55. | :08:00.
alongside a 23 year old man under question of supplying a controlled | :08:00. | :08:03.
drug. In six months time - Leeds Prison | :08:03. | :08:06.
becomes the first ever publicly run jail to move to a system of payment | :08:06. | :08:09.
by results. Essentially, that means that it gets bonuses for stopping | :08:09. | :08:11.
prisoners re-offending - or penalties if they fail. Nationally, | :08:11. | :08:14.
54% of prisoners on sentences of under a year commit another crime | :08:14. | :08:24.
:08:24. | :08:26. | ||
once they're released. And not just once. Its estimated - on average - | :08:26. | :08:32.
they'll commit another fifteen offences. And it costs us all. An | :08:32. | :08:35.
estimated ten billion a year! And so, there's a lot riding on places | :08:35. | :08:43.
like Leeds being able to do something about it. As they get | :08:43. | :08:46.
ready, they gave Joe Inwood exclusive access to see the ways | :08:46. | :08:53.
they are already stopping people coming back inside. It is his third | :08:53. | :08:59.
time inside. Serving five years on drugs charges, Robert is the sort | :08:59. | :09:07.
of prisoner who is hardest to reach. But HMP Leeds thing they have a | :09:07. | :09:10.
solution, every day he is released and sent to work at a homeless | :09:10. | :09:17.
shelter. In it is brilliant, having been out of society for two and-a- | :09:17. | :09:21.
half years is daunting. Having the opportunity to come back into work | :09:21. | :09:27.
whilst in prison, before you are released, it did to back into the | :09:27. | :09:32.
work ethic. The the prison are hoping a way to stop him | :09:32. | :09:36.
reoffending. In six months Leeds will be judged and paid on the | :09:36. | :09:41.
number of prisoners they can stop reoffending. Leeds is a public | :09:41. | :09:46.
prison, they are not profits for it to lose. So they are bringing in a | :09:46. | :09:52.
partner, a new organisation tasked with reducing reoffending. Sharing | :09:52. | :09:56.
the rewards and the risks. Prisoners should not be locked up | :09:56. | :10:00.
with nothing to do, we should work with offenders to make sure when | :10:00. | :10:04.
they are released they will not commit any further crimes and will | :10:04. | :10:09.
not come back to prison. That work also takes place inside the prison. | :10:09. | :10:13.
This is the resettlement wing, there are a couple of hundred | :10:13. | :10:18.
people here at any time, they are from the local area and secondly | :10:18. | :10:23.
they are on short-term sentences. Historically nobody is harder to | :10:23. | :10:28.
reach. Where I first joined the role was very much discipline | :10:28. | :10:34.
orientated. Now we treat them more like human beings. We are trying to | :10:34. | :10:39.
change their thought processes. Trying to get them jobs so it cuts | :10:39. | :10:43.
down their chances of reoffending. Through programmes like this | :10:43. | :10:46.
graphics workshop they have even done jobs designing because for | :10:47. | :10:52.
South Yorkshire police. He it has given me loads of skills, so I am | :10:52. | :10:57.
less likely to reoffend. You don't have to commit crime to make ends | :10:57. | :11:03.
meet. You can do it by working. really want this to be the last | :11:03. | :11:09.
time in prison, I really do. That at the crypt, things for Robert are | :11:09. | :11:14.
looking up. The future is looking up, I have opportunities and I | :11:14. | :11:22.
would like to go into support work. For all of us. Robert says prison | :11:22. | :11:27.
has finally changed his life for the better, but that makes him the | :11:27. | :11:31.
exception and not be rule. It is something HMP Leeds will be hoping | :11:32. | :11:36.
to change. Now let's talk to Andrew Neilson | :11:36. | :11:41.
from the Howard League for Penal Police in York have charged a care | :11:41. | :11:51.
:11:51. | :11:54. | ||
What is your take on the work being done? Should they be paid for doing | :11:54. | :11:59.
what prisons are supposed to do, stopping people reoffending? | :11:59. | :12:03.
know that these opportunities are important in terms of stopping | :12:03. | :12:08.
reoffending. The context is that the vast majority of prisoners in | :12:08. | :12:14.
England and Wales are not accessing regular positive activity was in | :12:14. | :12:19.
prison. They spend most of their time staring at four walls. That is | :12:19. | :12:25.
not helping. That is why we have such high reoffending rates. | :12:25. | :12:31.
its is a bit of a test case, if it works, it could be rolled out | :12:31. | :12:38.
nationwide. -- Leeds. Is something being done to give the prisoners | :12:38. | :12:43.
something for the future here? Payment by results is the mechanism | :12:43. | :12:47.
the government hope will persuade people to do more. That is the | :12:47. | :12:53.
concept behind this project. De has it? A I think everybody agrees in | :12:53. | :12:56.
principle that paying people by results in principle is a good | :12:56. | :13:01.
thing but practically it can be difficult. There are concerns. Are | :13:01. | :13:07.
we in sent advising people to cherry-pick the prisoners they are | :13:07. | :13:12.
looking at. Other looking for easy pickings rather than the hardest to | :13:12. | :13:20.
reach? Those way you might not hit your targets? There is that concern. | :13:21. | :13:25.
There are other concerns around charities, can they engage properly | :13:25. | :13:29.
if the payment is at the end of the process? Charities do not have | :13:29. | :13:34.
their lot of money or large cash reserves. How can they engage with | :13:34. | :13:40.
this? There are hoops which are there, there are issues which the | :13:40. | :13:50.

A protest march has taken place in Sheffield today over plans to close | :14:09. | :14:14.

UKIP says it is putting up more than 80 candidates for next month's | :14:33. | :14:38.
elections in the Yorkshire. That is more than it has fielded before. | :14:38. | :14:41.
UKIP holds one of the region's seats in the European Parliament | :14:41. | :14:44.
that has never had a local councillor elected in Yorkshire. | :14:44. | :14:52.
Elections take place on of May 3rd. We are putting a full team out in | :14:52. | :14:56.
Sheffield. All over the region. We're very excited about this. We | :14:56. | :15:03.
are really going for broke this time. We think we will do well. | :15:03. | :15:08.
it is the sex of the marathon challenge by Jane Tomlinson's | :15:08. | :15:12.
family. Mike and Rebecca Tomlinson set off from Newark this morning on | :15:12. | :15:16.
the next leg of their trip to London. Be studied in Paris at the | :15:16. | :15:22.
weekend. They travelled through France, Belgium, and Yorkshire. | :15:22. | :15:25.
However Mike Johnson is suffering with flu and has been lagging | :15:25. | :15:33.
behind the rest of the team. Jane did it one day after chemotherapy. | :15:33. | :15:38.
That puts it into context. I have just got to finish it. Not | :15:38. | :15:48.
:15:48. | :15:52. | ||
finishing is not an option. He will keep going. Absolutely. There are | :15:52. | :15:55.
claims that thousands of people in Yorkshire will lose their | :15:55. | :15:58.
disability benefits following the latest government-backed | :15:58. | :16:02.
legislation. Campaigners have told the Sunday Politics programme that | :16:02. | :16:05.
new rules will discriminate against people who have been forced to give | :16:05. | :16:11.
up work due to ill-health. How many people does this affect? It is | :16:11. | :16:15.
estimated that 30,000 people in our regional no longer be able to claim | :16:15. | :16:21.
allowances. The response of the Government is that Incapacity | :16:21. | :16:27.
Benefit cost the country a fortune. The bill is more than 135 billion | :16:27. | :16:33.
over the past 10 years. The say we cannot go on like this. The changes | :16:33. | :16:39.
affect people like this mother of three. She was injured in a car | :16:39. | :16:44.
accident a few years ago and broke her neck. She was reassessed for | :16:44. | :16:48.
the benefit and was told that she was not entitled to it. There are | :16:48. | :16:55.
many more people like her. What is angering many people is the fact | :16:55. | :16:59.
that the new rules say that if you have worked, have paid into the | :16:59. | :17:04.
system, you can only claim the allowance for one year. But if you | :17:04. | :17:08.
have never worked, you can claim it indefinitely. That is likely to | :17:08. | :17:13.
cause a heated debate on the Sunday Politics programme at 2pm on Sunday | :17:13. | :17:23.
afternoon. Still to come. | :17:23. | :17:28.
All the weekend weather, plus carry on, are Iraq. Join me in a few | :17:28. | :17:37.

Can you do a Kenneth Williams impression? | :17:46. | :17:52.
All, Meechan! Tomorrow is a red-letter day for | :17:52. | :17:58.
snooker fans. It is the 35th time the world championship has been | :17:58. | :18:04.
held at the Crucible Theatre. But Mark Williams faces a dressing- | :18:04. | :18:07.
down for using the social network Twitter to say he hates the venue | :18:07. | :18:10.
and hopes the competition moves to China. Our reporter is at the | :18:10. | :18:17.

the Crucible itself. Mark Williams the Crucible itself. Mark Williams | :18:52. | :18:54.

We know what is a fantastic venue. If they can get back we will do our | :19:19. | :19:22.

We have put another shilling and the meter. | :20:01. | :20:07.
Peter, you enjoyed playing at the Crucible? Yes, it is a fantastic | :20:07. | :20:11.
atmosphere. When you are a youngster you dream of coming to | :20:11. | :20:15.
the Crucible. It was a highlight of my career. I would love to do it | :20:16. | :20:21.
again. Fingers crossed for you. When you play? I have got a tough | :20:21. | :20:26.
game on Monday and Tuesday against Ronnie O'Sullivan. Is your heart | :20:26. | :20:31.
you might be you step out here? Absolutely. It has to be. My | :20:31. | :20:36.
preparation has gone well. I have been feeding for almost by Matt. | :20:36. | :20:44.
Cleanly? Yes, it has been a massive help. It has made the world of | :20:44. | :20:51.
