Good evening, and welcome to Thursday's Look North. On the | :00:11. | :00:14.
programme tonight: Locked up, thousands of miles from home. | :00:14. | :00:17.
One family's campaign to free a North Yorkshire man, held without | :00:17. | :00:27.
charge in an African jail. They just sat there. They have just | :00:27. | :00:32.
sat the door -- shut the door and let him in there. | :00:32. | :00:36.
Also tonight: more reasons for a fall in sales. Has Yorkshire-based | :00:36. | :00:38.
Morrisons fallen victim to supermarket wars, as sales dip for | :00:39. | :00:44.
the first time in nearly a decade? And, action! We go behind the | :00:44. | :00:54.
scenes, as the Antiques Roadshow rolls into Scarborough. | :00:54. | :00:59.
Grey skies today, similar tomorrow but much brighter at the weekend. A | :00:59. | :01:09.
First tonight: Fears are growing for a man from North Yorkshire, | :01:09. | :01:12.
held without charge in an African jail. David Simpson, from Pickering, | :01:12. | :01:16.
was working in the Central African Republic as a safari guide when, he | :01:16. | :01:19.
says, he discovered massacred bodies in the bush. He reported the | :01:19. | :01:22.
find to the authorities in the capital Bangi, but was then | :01:22. | :01:25.
arrested on suspicion of committing the murders. His family are | :01:25. | :01:35.
:01:35. | :01:35. | ||
campaigning for his release. Cathy Killick reports. | :01:35. | :01:42.
On the edge of the North York Moors, the family farm is flourishing. | :01:42. | :01:46.
While one brother tends his farm at home, the other is in jail in the | :01:46. | :01:49.
Central African Republic. David Simpson was working for a Swedish | :01:49. | :01:53.
company that takes clients game hunting. He had been clearing out a | :01:53. | :02:02.
road when he found the bodies of 18 men. They had been bound, tortured | :02:02. | :02:08.
and murdered. The first thing he saw was six people, they were faced | :02:08. | :02:11.
them with their hands tied. They had been beaten by sticks and had | :02:11. | :02:17.
machete wounds to the back of their head. He went further and found | :02:17. | :02:26.
another four people, tied in the same way. It bore the hallmarks of | :02:26. | :02:29.
a Lord's Resistance Army massacre. They are a rebel group. Their | :02:29. | :02:32.
crimes include rape, torture, murder and using children as | :02:32. | :02:36.
soldiers. David reported the massacre to the authorities. | :02:36. | :02:40.
Instead of being questioned as a witness, he and his boss were | :02:40. | :02:50.
:02:50. | :02:50. | ||
thrown in jail as suspects. They should have been charged within six | :02:50. | :02:54.
days or released, but a month later, they remain in jail. The Foreign | :02:54. | :02:58.
Office and the British Embassy are both aware of his plight but so far | :02:58. | :03:08.
:03:08. | :03:23. | ||
My big fear is that they try to pin it all on David, with no evidence, | :03:23. | :03:28.
and it will end up having to go to trial and he could be in prison for | :03:28. | :03:34.
seven months. That is my big fear. They can't convict him of it. He | :03:35. | :03:39.
has lawyer's on his side, very good people who understand the country. | :03:39. | :03:44.
But if they try to charge him with it, then he could be there for | :03:44. | :03:50.
months. In the meantime, David's family can only wait, trusting | :03:50. | :03:54.
lawyers to pick their way through a justice system very foreign to our | :03:54. | :03:57.
own. The Bradford-based supermarket | :03:57. | :04:01.
chain Morrisons has seen sales drop, in the first part of this year. | :04:01. | :04:04.
It's the first downturn since the company took over Safeway in 2004. | :04:04. | :04:07.
So, what's responsible for the slowdown, and should investors and | :04:07. | :04:16.
shoppers be concerned? Here's Danni Hewson. | :04:16. | :04:19.
It seems Morrisons has fallen victim to the oft talked about | :04:19. | :04:29.
supermarket wars. The company's announced its first fall in sales | :04:29. | :04:33.
in nearly a decade. Down 1% in the first quarter of this year. Now, | :04:33. | :04:36.
Morrisons is the UK's fourth biggest supermarket, with 455 | :04:36. | :04:39.
stores. It's put its decline down to a refusal to square up to its | :04:40. | :04:43.
rivals in the promotions ring. But, with our budgets so tight, are | :04:43. | :04:48.
money off vouchers too tempting to pass up? I have four kids, so yes, | :04:48. | :04:55.
definitely. Everything helps. little helps. It helps, in the | :04:55. | :04:59.
financial climate, if you are going to shop there anyway and get | :04:59. | :05:04.
bonuses for doing it, it is worthwhile. You do get plenty of | :05:04. | :05:09.
offers in other places. The regular place I shop would have offers so | :05:09. | :05:13.
it would not make the shop where I go now. For I would prefer to go | :05:13. | :05:18.
where I know there is quality rather than money off. | :05:18. | :05:21.
Perception is everything, of course. And this week's comparison of a | :05:21. | :05:24.
basket of 33 goods puts Morrisons as the cheapest of the big five | :05:24. | :05:27.
supermarkets. And, after a better than expected 8% rise in underlying | :05:27. | :05:30.
pre-tax profits last year, its outlook for this year remains | :05:30. | :05:33.
unchanged. But its share prices are worrying, having slipped 17% over | :05:33. | :05:36.
the last six months. Leeds-based stockbroker Redmain Bentley says | :05:36. | :05:45.
the grocer is playing the long game. Rather than going with the small | :05:45. | :05:51.
gains for a quick fix, like ASDA, Sainsbury, they are sitting back, | :05:51. | :05:56.
saying, we don't need to compete like that. We have low prices, so | :05:56. | :06:00.
we are going to compete by making the stores more appealing, making | :06:00. | :06:07.
the shopping experience better, making sure they have their e- | :06:07. | :06:09.
commerce ticking over in the background. | :06:09. | :06:13.
The ferocious battle to get us to push our trolleys through the door | :06:13. | :06:16.
will undoubtedly continue to hot up, as shoppers feel the squeeze. | :06:16. | :06:18.
Morrisons is detemined to keep its place. | :06:18. | :06:22.
Later on Look North: Au revoir, Ajmal, Yorkshire says it's onwards | :06:22. | :06:31.
and upwards, after the surprise More of the day's news now. And the | :06:31. | :06:34.
man accused of murdering a woman from Whitby and a man from | :06:35. | :06:38.
Middlesbrough has appeared in court via video link from prison. James | :06:38. | :06:42.
Allen was arrested in Leeds, on Sunday. Today, he appeared at | :06:42. | :06:46.
Teeside Crown Court. The 35 year old didn't enter a plea, and the | :06:46. | :06:53.
case was adjourned until July. The body of a man found in the | :06:53. | :06:56.
River Don, in Doncaster, on Tuesday evening has been confirmed as that | :06:56. | :06:59.
of missing pensioner, Ernest Lancaster. The 82 year old had been | :06:59. | :07:03.
missing from his home in Brinsworth for over three weeks. He'd been | :07:03. | :07:06.
suffering from Alzheimer's disease, and police say there were no | :07:06. | :07:07.
suspicious circumstances. Polling stations have opened for | :07:08. | :07:11.
voters to have their say in local elections and mayoral referendums. | :07:11. | :07:14.
Voters can head for the polls until 10 o'clock tonight. Referendums in | :07:14. | :07:16.
Sheffield, Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield and Doncaster will decide | :07:16. | :07:19.
whether people want an elected mayor. There's a special election | :07:19. | :07:21.
2012 programme, beginning at 11.35pm tonight, and continuing | :07:21. | :07:24.
through the night. We'll have all the results throughout the day | :07:24. | :07:34.
:07:34. | :07:37. | ||
Hundreds of residents living in luxury apartments in Leeds face | :07:37. | :07:40.
days without water, because of a fractured pipe. Residents at West | :07:40. | :07:44.
Point in the city centre are having to use bottled water, and have been | :07:44. | :07:47.
told supplies won't be restored for up to 72 hours. Charlotte Leeming | :07:47. | :07:57.
:07:57. | :07:59. | ||
has this. Then Day two without water for this | :07:59. | :08:02.
man. That means the dirty washing pile is getting bigger, and the | :08:02. | :08:12.
toilet and shower are out of bounds. Water was cut off yesterday morning | :08:12. | :08:16.
after a pipe fractured. But the residents say it is making life | :08:16. | :08:26.
:08:26. | :08:26. | ||
very difficult. It has been a major inconvenience. The toilet won't | :08:26. | :08:30.
flush, there is no shower. There is a big pile of washing up. I have | :08:30. | :08:38.
had to go to my girlfriend's flat to have a shower. The group which | :08:38. | :08:41.
manages these apartments have sent this letter to all of the residents. | :08:41. | :08:45.
They apologise for any inconvenience but insist the | :08:45. | :08:52.
repairs are being carried out as quickly as possible. The company | :08:53. | :09:02.
:09:03. | :09:05. | ||
did not want to elaborate any further on the situation. The | :09:05. | :09:07.
company has been providing residents with some bottled | :09:07. | :09:14.
drinking water. I do not know where the pipe is. | :09:14. | :09:17.
it is deep underground or what. The wording of the letter said | :09:17. | :09:21.
something about it taking 36 hours to select and waiting for a part. | :09:21. | :09:31.
:09:31. | :09:32. | ||
It seems a bit... Complex for just a pipe. After his two days without | :09:32. | :09:36.
water, he says hygiene is now a big concern, so he is hoping the water | :09:36. | :09:46.
:09:46. | :09:50. | ||
supply is restored sooner rather than later. | :09:50. | :09:55.
I bet it was chilly in Scarborough, for the cricket. | :09:55. | :10:04.
They were wearing coats, scarves and gloves, supporting the county. | :10:04. | :10:12.
A lot of talk about you-know-who. And is to portray -- departure. | :10:12. | :10:15.
will be talking about that later. Scientists at Sheffield University | :10:15. | :10:18.
have made a groundbreaking discovery, which could help to | :10:18. | :10:20.
solve shortages of food across the world. Their pioneering research | :10:20. | :10:24.
could make it easier for farmers to grow crops like maize, without | :10:24. | :10:26.
relying on fertilisers and pesticides. Danny Carpenter | :10:26. | :10:31.
explains. The rolling Yorkshire countryside. | :10:31. | :10:35.
It is early in the year but it is starting to fill up with food. Over | :10:35. | :10:40.
many generations, farmers and growers selected varieties | :10:40. | :10:45.
primarily to increase yield, with complex fertilisers and expensive | :10:45. | :10:49.
chemicals to control disease, and production has increased further. | :10:49. | :10:53.
But the plants have lost something along the way. The ability to look | :10:53. | :10:58.
after themselves. Because plants don't move around, it is easy to | :10:58. | :11:04.
forget they are living things. They breathe air. In a sense, they eat, | :11:04. | :11:07.
and as scientists are discovering, underground they're very busy | :11:07. | :11:13.
indeed. Researchers at the University of Sheffield have | :11:13. | :11:18.
studied maize plants and what they have discovered could change the | :11:18. | :11:21.
way we farm around the world. The plants emit chemicals from their | :11:21. | :11:26.
roots, which attract bacteria. These migrate through the soil to | :11:26. | :11:31.
the roots, and manufacture important nutrients for the plant, | :11:31. | :11:35.
which but only fertilise it but also protect it from pests and | :11:35. | :11:41.
diseases. In Europe and in the west, we don't notice it that much, but | :11:41. | :11:46.
there is an imminent threat of food security. One of the main | :11:46. | :11:49.
challenges for scientists and policy makers is to safeguard food | :11:49. | :11:55.
security. If we can do that in a more sustainable way, we can | :11:55. | :11:58.
safeguard food security for future generations. This could be | :11:58. | :12:03.
potentially the technology to lead to that. This is not about | :12:03. | :12:07.
genetically modified food. It is about breeding the new varieties | :12:07. | :12:11.
with ancient strains and will they recovered the abilities that | :12:11. | :12:15.
millions of years of evolution had originally given them. It could | :12:15. | :12:20.
make sustainable farming possible on an industrial scale. It could | :12:20. | :12:27.
help feed the world. Before seven o'clock: York's promotion rivals | :12:27. | :12:31.
score two own goals, one on, and one off the pitch How the Mansfield | :12:31. | :12:34.
chief exec fell foul of the police, after their match against the | :12:34. | :12:41.
Minstermen. And, hundreds raid their attics, as | :12:41. | :12:50.
the nation's favourite antiques show comes to Scarborough. | :12:50. | :13:00.
:13:00. | :13:01. | ||
Forehead limbs behind the scenes, It is nice to have Fiona on our | :13:01. | :13:05.
programme! We were both excited when this man came onto the scene, | :13:05. | :13:09.
Ajmal Shahzad seemed to have everything. But then it all went | :13:09. | :13:14.
wrong. A mutual parting of the ways, the club announced, he has been | :13:14. | :13:21.
sacked, the more planned echo from Yorkshire's For lovers. Nobody | :13:21. | :13:25.
disputes his talent. Already, four counties had expressed an interest | :13:25. | :13:30.
in him. Dressing-room harmony, but were into the chairman, was at | :13:30. | :13:33.
stake. A good day for Yorkshire on the day | :13:33. | :13:39.
the sun did not rise at all. Sadly, Anthony McGrath failed to make his | :13:39. | :13:48.
century, out for 91. It is great to see him back in form, and Johnny | :13:48. | :13:53.
Burstow, out earlier for 182. A lusty blow from Ryan Sidebottom. | :13:54. | :13:59.
Yorkshire's that of the platform, surely, for victory. -- Yorkshire | :13:59. | :14:05.
setting up the platform. Talk in the crowd was about Ajmal Shahzad. | :14:05. | :14:10.
The chairman port no punches. have started very positively, we | :14:10. | :14:15.
went to Barbados, we did well, but unfortunately, the situation has | :14:15. | :14:21.
arisen again. If a player does not want to be here, and he has made it | :14:21. | :14:26.
clear, there is no point putting it off. The think you want to create | :14:26. | :14:32.
is a harmonious dressing room, this is now in progress? Yes, we have a | :14:32. | :14:37.
harmonious dressing room now. Everybody is locked into the | :14:37. | :14:39.
situation that we need to get promotion, they know what they have | :14:39. | :14:46.
to achieve. Everybody is happy. These supporters deserve more. Cold | :14:46. | :14:50.
Marmite and wetter, summed up by these three happy people. Hear no | :14:50. | :14:58.
evil, see no evil, speak no evil. You can bet that they will be there | :14:58. | :15:04.
tomorrow. It is a good day to go if the weather holds. Yorkshire have | :15:04. | :15:14.
:15:14. | :15:18. | ||
Anthony McGrath took four wickets, exceptional. Leicestershire have | :15:18. | :15:27.
been asked to follow on. With a bit of luck, that could lead to | :15:27. | :15:37.
:15:37. | :15:39. | ||
Yorkshire's first success of the York City can still dream of | :15:39. | :15:43.
returning to the Football League next season, after the first leg of | :15:43. | :15:49.
their play-off semi-final last night. They drew 1-1 with Mansfield. | :15:49. | :15:53.
It is back to Status quo and all to play for in the return match on | :15:53. | :15:56.
Monday. The night was not without controversy inside and outside the | :15:56. | :16:03.
stadium. More than 6000 squeezed into | :16:03. | :16:06.
Britain christened last night. That told you all you needed to know | :16:06. | :16:11.
about the height of York City's promotion hopes. Not everybody | :16:11. | :16:16.
enjoyed such a happy evening. The Mansfield chief executive was | :16:16. | :16:20.
arrested by North Yorkshire Police outside the stadium while the match | :16:20. | :16:23.
was in progress for using threatening words and behaviour. In | :16:23. | :16:28.
a statement today, Mansfield said she was reprimanded for a verbal | :16:28. | :16:32.
retort to a police officer and that the incident had been blown out of | :16:32. | :16:39.
proportion. Exactly how much of the match she missed is not clear. It | :16:39. | :16:44.
was a cracker. Especially in the first half. Mansfield's style might | :16:44. | :16:52.
not be to everybody's taste, but it is effective. The long throw-in | :16:52. | :16:59.
caused havoc more than once. York opened the scoring. But by half- | :16:59. | :17:06.
time, the equaliser. An own goal. It stayed 1-1. The second half was | :17:06. | :17:11.
much tighter than the first. As a taster of what life might be like | :17:11. | :17:16.
in the league for one of these sides, it was gripping stuff. | :17:17. | :17:20.
was a tough game, they looked a good side, but we have just done | :17:20. | :17:25.
enough. They were good in some parts, but sometimes, we get the | :17:25. | :17:29.
ball away a bit cheaply. We take them back to their place and beat | :17:29. | :17:34.
them. And so to Mansfield for the rematch on Monday. And then, | :17:34. | :17:38.
Wembley, for one of these two great northern clubs, both of whom have | :17:39. | :17:46.
been out of the Football League for far too long. | :17:46. | :17:49.
Pretty tense. If you are a Yorkshire Day rugby | :17:49. | :17:53.
union fan, London might be the place to spend your Bank Holiday | :17:53. | :17:57.
weekend, and as your wife has something else to say it! Three of | :17:57. | :18:03.
our teams play at Twickenham on Saturday in the showpiece finals. | :18:03. | :18:12.
Baildon kick-off at 11 am, and finally, at 3pm, will play against | :18:12. | :18:18.
East Grinstead. It is fantastic, it shows the | :18:18. | :18:21.
strength of Yorkshire rugby. Other counties will sit up and take | :18:21. | :18:31.
:18:31. | :18:31. | ||
notice. It will show we can represent the county, it is great. | :18:31. | :18:38.
It is Beldon against Harrow. Nick Robinson-Baker is a diver, we | :18:38. | :18:43.
followed him through the ups and downs for a number of years. He has | :18:43. | :18:48.
just won silver in the World Series event in Mexico, with his three- | :18:48. | :18:51.
metre Synchro partner Chris Mears. They go to the European chubby | :18:52. | :19:00.
chips next week, and then, the Olympics -- European Championships. | :19:00. | :19:06.
This means everything Simi. It has been a hard year, they have been | :19:06. | :19:14.
some great times, some sad Times, and the show's -- this shows we can | :19:14. | :19:20.
win medals. This has built up our confidence. With three months to go | :19:20. | :19:23.
until the Olympics, I am feeling very confident, and looking forward | :19:23. | :19:31.
to it. For so long, Benn was your partner. You developed a team that | :19:31. | :19:36.
was almost unbreakable, but it did break. Yes, he had a serious injury | :19:36. | :19:42.
at the beginning of 2010. He tore a ligament. That put him out of | :19:42. | :19:48.
competition. He tried to get back after the operation, but it did not | :19:48. | :19:53.
succeed. We had to look at other variations. That must be tough, the | :19:53. | :19:59.
new partner. After you spend several we -- several years | :19:59. | :20:03.
competing internationally, we competed at the Beijing Olympics, | :20:03. | :20:07.
we are such great mates, so it was like a break-up, but we are still | :20:07. | :20:15.
close mates. He is a good lad, he still supports me. The key is to | :20:15. | :20:22.
peak at the right talent. Did you build up to the Olympics, or are | :20:22. | :20:28.
you just looking at the European Championships first? It is his huge | :20:28. | :20:32.
circle we have got to go through, so many events that we have to | :20:32. | :20:39.

A lot was expected of you in Beijing, it did not quite work, but | :20:52. | :20:59.

there any surprises you can put in, what are the judges looking for | :21:16. | :21:24.
specific things, specific guides? If there are so many aspects. You | :21:24. | :21:28.
have to state which guides you will use before you compete, so we have | :21:28. | :21:36.
to list six dives. We recently started using a new forward 4 1/2 | :21:36. | :21:40.

where is the straight and?! May be fun and then come up I will get | :21:54. | :22:01.

People in Scarborough have been searching their attics and sorting | :22:05. | :22:07.
through their junk in the hope of unearthing something rare and | :22:08. | :22:14.
valuable. Yes, the Antiques Roadshow has been recording in town | :22:14. | :22:20.
today. We have been behind the scenes of one of our most popular | :22:20. | :22:30.

and long running series. Art, furniture, and fashion. It can | :22:35. | :22:39.
only mean one thing, the Antiques Roadshow is in town. By 9am, the | :22:39. | :22:44.
queues have formed, but today has taken lots of panic. It is the day | :22:44. | :22:50.

as important to us that we get all of the cameras working, we make | :23:07. | :23:11.
sure the TV side is handled well, but we really want people to say, I | :23:11. | :23:16.
had a great day. Many larger pieces have to be collected, including | :23:16. | :23:23.
this sideboard by Robert Thomson. We will see more of that later. | :23:23. | :23:30.
Soon, it is time for the public to arrive. Of all of the preparation | :23:30. | :23:36.
that goes into it, I have the lightest load. When I turn up, all | :23:36. | :23:40.
I have done his bit to the editor and producer in the days beforehand | :23:40. | :23:46.
about what we are going to say, and if I know that I will cut a few | :23:46. | :23:52.
things, we will discuss them, but generally, I have no idea what is | :23:52. | :23:59.
going to happen, until we start. had this lovely item donated to the | :23:59. | :24:02.
maritime heritage centre. We are bringing it down today to find out | :24:02. | :24:09.
a bit more about it. It is painted by Robert Palmer, he was an | :24:09. | :24:13.
apprentice at the Scarborough Evening News, a bit of local | :24:13. | :24:22.
history. Here, it is packed, and it is not | :24:22. | :24:26.
even 10:00am. There have been people queuing since before 7 am. | :24:26. | :24:32.
It might apply chaos, but it is a well-oiled machine. -- it might | :24:32. | :24:38.
look like chaos. The sideboard is rare. All hand-crafted without a | :24:38. | :24:44.
single male, and its owner was a friend of the maker. My husband and | :24:44. | :24:51.
a bedsit over the fire with him, while we were discussing furniture, | :24:51. | :24:56.
because we got it bit by bit, as we could afford it. After a gruelling | :24:56. | :25:01.
two days, they filled their final legs, as the orchestra plays them | :25:01. | :25:09.
out with a familiar theme. How much do you think on the | :25:09. | :25:11.
sideboard? Thousands! | :25:11. | :25:21.

It is vital for Scarborough tomorrow. There might be some light | :25:25. | :25:30.

tomorrow, with some light rain and drizzle later in the day. It is an | :26:04. | :26:09.
