Welcome to Monday's Look North. On the programme tonight. Tributes to

:00:06.:00:09.

the Wakefield man killed in a hit and run while on honeymoon in

:00:09.:00:19.
:00:19.:00:19.

Mexico. He was just a friendly, amiable person. It is so sad,

:00:19.:00:23.

especially on his honeymoon. Also tonight. We meet the little girl

:00:23.:00:27.

whose life was saved after her mum donated part of her liver. And a

:00:27.:00:30.

110 years young - happy birthday to Sheffield's Ralph Tarrant, who is

:00:30.:00:40.

the oldest man in Britain. We are turning back the clock over 20

:00:40.:00:44.

years at Fulford Golf Club with a big-time golf tournament. This is

:00:45.:00:47.

the European Ladies' Amateur Team Championships. It takes place this

:00:47.:00:51.

week. The crowd as assembling for the opening ceremony. Top-quality

:00:51.:00:57.

golf is assured. And what a difference one year

:00:57.:01:02.

makes. This time last year it was the wettest summer for 100 years.

:01:02.:01:07.

This time, the hottest first date is set for the Great Yorkshire Show.

:01:07.:01:17.
:01:17.:01:20.

Join me live later on. Good evening. Tributes have been

:01:20.:01:24.

paid to a man killed in a suspected hit and run in Mexico, while he was

:01:24.:01:33.

on his honeymoon. 55-year-old Ray Cottam from Wakefield had only been

:01:33.:01:36.

married to his wife Karen for a matter of days when the tragedy

:01:36.:01:42.

happened. She is being comforted by family at their home in Middlestown.

:01:42.:01:48.

They had only just become man and wife. The couple married in West

:01:48.:01:55.

Yorkshire last month. They set off for a luxury honeymoon in Mexico.

:01:55.:02:00.

It was here that 55-year-old Ray Cottam was killed in a suspected

:02:00.:02:06.

hit and run crash. He was well known in Middlestown and also here,

:02:06.:02:13.

where he ran a fish and chip shop. People have remembered a man who

:02:13.:02:18.

would do anything for anyone. was a very nice man. Everybody

:02:18.:02:23.

loved him. Always a lot of cars going to the fish and chip shop. He

:02:23.:02:31.

was very popular. Everybody knew him. More as a friend. He always

:02:31.:02:35.

smiled. He would deliver fish and chips locally. He was just a

:02:35.:02:40.

chips locally. He was just a friendly, amiable guy, it is so sad.

:02:41.:02:46.

Especially on his honeymoon. Foreign and Commonwealth Office

:02:46.:02:56.
:02:56.:02:59.

At the betting shop where his widow worked, staff have started a

:02:59.:03:03.

collection for the family. Karen has flown back to England and is at

:03:03.:03:13.

home, being comforted by her family. Appeals are being made for more

:03:13.:03:16.

people to become organ donors. The NHS Blood and Transplant service

:03:16.:03:19.

has begun a campaign called Pass It On. They are encouraging people to

:03:19.:03:22.

talk about donation so that relatives know what to do when a

:03:22.:03:28.

loved one dies. In Yorkshire, 780 people are waiting for a transplant.

:03:28.:03:34.

So far this year 86 people have benefited from a donation. But

:03:34.:03:37.

during the same period, five people have died due to a shortage of

:03:37.:03:40.

organs. As part of National Transplant Week, our reporter has

:03:40.:03:43.

been to meet a North Yorkshire mother who donated part of her

:03:43.:03:53.
:03:53.:03:58.

liver to her seven-year-old daughter. Lydia takes nine types of

:03:58.:04:03.

medication three times a day. This seven-year-old's survived cancer

:04:03.:04:08.

and a living organ transplant. Two years ago, she was diagnosed with a

:04:08.:04:13.

rare cancer. It spread to her liver. Her parents were told she had just

:04:14.:04:18.

weeks to live. I cannot put it into words how it makes you feel. You

:04:18.:04:23.

have to get on with it. We made the best of life and went on holidays

:04:23.:04:30.

and did everything to make sure we did not have any regrets.

:04:30.:04:39.

surgeons in Birmingham gave the family hope. They removed various

:04:39.:04:43.

family hope. They removed various organs during a marathon operation.

:04:43.:04:47.

Four months later, and transplant consultants first removed part of

:04:47.:04:51.

the liver and it was transported to the liver and it was transported to

:04:51.:04:54.

a hospital five miles away and transplanted into Lydia. The use of

:04:54.:04:59.

living donors is not use but this is an unusual case because it is

:04:59.:05:05.

from mother to daughter. What did we do to make you better? What did

:05:05.:05:12.

we do with the cancer? He chucked it in the dustbin! I was

:05:12.:05:15.

apprehensive as you would be with two members of your family going

:05:15.:05:19.

into surgery on the same day. We took them risk because we wanted to

:05:19.:05:29.
:05:29.:05:32.

give her the best chance of having life. OK? So-so. We look at her and

:05:32.:05:37.

we have hope again. We have an opportunity we would not have, we

:05:37.:05:42.

were told. It is nice to know that she has my liver and it has saved

:05:42.:05:48.

her. Lydia will have to take anti- rejection drugs for the rest of her

:05:48.:05:58.
:05:58.:06:01.

life, but it is a small price to pay for this family.

:06:01.:06:08.

Later on Look North: We speak to the North Yorkshire camerman who

:06:08.:06:10.

captured this dramatic footage of the Piper Alpha tragedy 25 years

:06:10.:06:20.
:06:20.:06:21.

ago. Other news from around Yorkshire. A jockey who was

:06:21.:06:23.

seriously injured during a race last week has had brain surgery.

:06:23.:06:26.

Brian Toomey, who is based in Hambleton in North Yorkshire, was

:06:26.:06:30.

racing in Scotland last Thursday when his horse fell. He has had an

:06:30.:06:33.

operation to reduce swelling on his brain and will be kept sedated for

:06:33.:06:39.

the next few days. There are concerns about prostitution in part

:06:39.:06:42.

of Bradford. 1600 people in Manningham have signed a petition

:06:43.:06:49.

saying it is a major problem there. The police have told BBC Radio

:06:49.:06:52.

Leeds there have been 52 arrests in connection with it, in the last

:06:52.:06:56.

three months. Train services have resumed after months of disruption

:06:56.:06:59.

due to a landslip on the line at Hatfield Colliery in South

:06:59.:07:03.

Yorkshire. 1.4 million tonnes of material moved all four tracks back

:07:03.:07:05.

in February, affecting services between Doncaster, Scunthorpe and

:07:05.:07:11.

Cleethorpes. Hourly trains between Doncaster and Goole started this

:07:11.:07:20.

morning, with a full service expected by the end of the month.

:07:20.:07:25.

We have removed almost 1 million tonnes which has been removed from

:07:25.:07:29.

site to different places and the people involved, train operators

:07:29.:07:34.

and passengers, they have had to get buses for months. It has been

:07:34.:07:41.

significant. The National Railway Museum has had record breaking

:07:41.:07:44.

visitor numbers since the opening of a new exhibition. For two weeks

:07:44.:07:46.

only the six surviving A4 locomotives have been lined up in

:07:46.:07:50.

the great hall. 75 years ago, one of the class, Mallard, set the

:07:50.:07:52.

world steam speed record of 126 miles an hour. Since Wednesday,

:07:52.:07:56.

43,000 people have visited. On Saturday alone, 13,000 came through

:07:56.:07:59.

the door - that was the highest daily total ever recorded at the

:07:59.:08:09.

National Railway Museum. It is 25 years since 167 people died in the

:08:09.:08:14.

Piper Alpha oil rig explosion off the coast of Scotland. Paul Berriff

:08:14.:08:17.

from North Yorkshire was a young photographer at the time. He was

:08:17.:08:23.

there by chance, filming with search and rescue teams. He

:08:23.:08:26.

captured the only pictures in the immediate aftermath of the

:08:26.:08:29.

explosion and he's been speaking to some of the survivors for a new

:08:29.:08:37.

film about the disaster. At this moment there was a massive

:08:37.:08:46.

explosion. When a series of explosions ripped through the Piper

:08:46.:08:52.

Alpha oil rig in 1988, the extraordinary footage was captured

:08:52.:08:57.

by Paul Berriff, a film-maker. He was on board the first rescue

:08:57.:09:02.

helicopter. As we approached, be could feel the heat penetrating the

:09:02.:09:08.

helicopter. I touched the side and it was hot. We were one mile away.

:09:08.:09:15.

The temperatures were up to 1600 degrees centigrade. Car gearboxes

:09:15.:09:22.

miles at that temperature. You can imagine, having a human being in

:09:22.:09:28.

that. 25 years later, he has made a new film about the disaster. 167

:09:28.:09:34.

men died but there were survivors. No star of them kept it to

:09:34.:09:39.

themselves and many survivors have not told their wives about it --

:09:39.:09:47.

most of them kept it to themselves. I wanted to make that a, from that

:09:47.:09:55.

night. You are under a grill, there is no other word to describe it.

:09:56.:10:02.

The top of my head started to cook. I thought I was going to be burnt

:10:02.:10:07.

to death, I thought I might be drowned. I thought I would sooner

:10:07.:10:12.

drown. I think that is a more peaceful death. It is 25 years ago

:10:12.:10:18.

and I remember it like yesterday. I was 70 yards away from the platform.

:10:18.:10:24.

The heat was intense. People were jumping off. They were jumping over

:10:24.:10:30.

the side. It was horrific. The film is a moving testament to a

:10:30.:10:34.

horrifying episode that lives vividly in the memories of those

:10:34.:10:40.

who were there, Paul Berriff included. And you can see Fire in

:10:41.:10:48.

the Night on BBC Two at 9 o'clock tomorrow. Why these ladies from

:10:48.:10:54.

Austria are helping to put Fulford Golf Club back on the golfing map.

:10:54.:11:04.
:11:04.:11:04.

I feel like singing. Maybe not. And this man was in his 30s when Fred

:11:04.:11:07.

Perry won Wimbledon. Find out the secret of a long life from

:11:07.:11:17.
:11:17.:11:18.

Britain's oldest man. Now for the sport here's Tanya. You are hot off

:11:18.:11:22.

the plane from hungry when it Adams has been doing well in the

:11:23.:11:27.

championships. It is her first tournament since

:11:27.:11:32.

the Olympics. She could not have been further away from the 10,000

:11:32.:11:38.

people who watched her win the gold medal. We were in a fixed tent.

:11:38.:11:43.

There was just enough seating for team-mates. You would not have

:11:43.:11:47.

known this championship's was taking place. There were two gold

:11:47.:11:52.

medallists, there was her and the legendary Katie Taylor. She was

:11:52.:11:59.

rusty. She did admit that. She has had an injury. But she came through

:11:59.:12:02.

the tournament seamlessly. This is what she had to say after she got

:12:02.:12:12.
:12:12.:12:13.

the gold medal. I feel really good. I am really pleased to come back

:12:13.:12:20.

and get a gold medal. She was a tough opponent. She was, I BOX her

:12:20.:12:25.

in the Olympics, in the qualifying stages, and I knew I would be up

:12:25.:12:30.

against it. This week has been superb. It has gone better than I

:12:30.:12:34.

could imagine. I wanted the gold medal and I got what I wanted. My

:12:34.:12:41.

wish came true. And you got back to boxing. That is what I am all about.

:12:42.:12:48.

It is my passion. It is nice to take a gold medal home to England,

:12:48.:12:54.

as well. Looking around, this is a far cry from the XL arena and the

:12:54.:12:59.

Olympic Games, but you focused and you were not put off. Definitely,

:12:59.:13:04.

this is what I like about boxing. It does not matter where I am

:13:04.:13:08.

boxing, it could be in a field and I would perform as well. Now, for

:13:09.:13:14.

me, I have two weeks of rest and back to training camp and back to

:13:14.:13:18.

business and wait for my next tournament. It will be a big year

:13:18.:13:24.

next year. We have the Commonwealth Games, European Championships, and

:13:24.:13:29.

I am hoping to make history in the Commonwealth Games, the first time

:13:29.:13:34.

women's boxing will be there. I hope your mother has run on the

:13:34.:13:39.

mantelpiece for another trophy! She will have to build our new

:13:39.:13:42.

extension in house. Alistair Brownlee returned from an ankle

:13:42.:13:45.

injury to win Saturday's World Triathlon Series race in Kitzbuehel.

:13:45.:13:47.

The older of the two Brownlee brothers returned after missing the

:13:47.:13:50.

last two events, and was first to cross the finishing line. Younger

:13:50.:13:54.

brother Jonny had to pull out of the race because of a stomach bug.

:13:54.:13:57.

In rugby league, Castleford Tigers have turned down an offer for Rangi

:13:57.:14:06.

Chase. The stand-off who scored at the weekend during their defeat to

:14:06.:14:09.

St Helens. Castleford have said Salford's offer was way below the

:14:09.:14:12.

valuation they have for the 27- year-old, and also said Chase is an

:14:12.:14:15.

integral part of the club's future. Huddersfield Giants moved up to

:14:16.:14:19.

second place in the Super League after a late win against Hull FC

:14:19.:14:21.

yesterday. Skipper Danny Brough scored the decisive try late on to

:14:22.:14:25.

earn the Giants a 22-16 win. An earlier hit on Luke Robinson saw

:14:25.:14:28.

the scrum half leave the field, Giants coach Paul Anderson was very

:14:28.:14:38.
:14:38.:14:39.

unhappy with the shoulder charge. I am sure that will be something we

:14:39.:14:43.

will be discussing when we bring you the action from the weekend,

:14:43.:14:52.

including again tonight between Wakefield and windows macro. Three

:14:52.:14:55.

Yorkshire cricketers have been named in the initial squad for next

:14:55.:14:57.

month's women's Ashes between England and Australia. Barnsley's

:14:57.:14:59.

Katherine Brunt has been selected after returning from injury. Also

:14:59.:15:06.

selected are Lauren Winfield and Danielle Hazell. Unlike the men's

:15:06.:15:09.

Ashes, the women's competition will be decided using a points system

:15:09.:15:15.

over one test match, three one day games and three T20 matches. That

:15:15.:15:20.

is almost all of the sport. You have been deserted this evening. It

:15:20.:15:25.

was tuck getting Harry out of the offers, I'm told, and down to the

:15:25.:15:34.

golf course. He has met some of the finest lady golfers. From all over

:15:34.:15:41.

Europe. Look at the sunshine. It is fantastic. Cue the music. The band

:15:41.:15:49.

comes out right on time. You are seeing the 19 nations of these

:15:49.:15:53.

wonderful lady golfers taking part in the European Ladies' Amateur

:15:53.:15:58.

Team Championships. They are making their way behind the flags. It is

:15:58.:16:03.

remarkable. The first time in over 20 years the club has had such a

:16:03.:16:07.

big event. Is the course ready, is the club are ready? This is your

:16:07.:16:12.

answer. For 20 years, the club hosted a

:16:12.:16:17.

major golf tournament but in 1991 it stopped. This week, the course

:16:17.:16:22.

will showcase women's amateur golf in Europe. The standard is

:16:22.:16:27.

incredibly high. The Good Old Days of Fulford Golf Club, Tony Jacklin,

:16:27.:16:34.

Lee Trevino, Sam Torrance. They won here. And there was Bernard Langer.

:16:34.:16:39.

This is the 17th, where Bernard Langer in 1981 played his third

:16:39.:16:47.

shot from the trees. As you do. COMMENTATOR: He must not make a

:16:47.:16:57.
:16:57.:17:00.

accidental chip of the tree. He must get the ball. They are

:17:01.:17:05.

applauding because he got it out to be green.

:17:05.:17:10.

The Finland team are highly fancied and they agreed that the return of

:17:10.:17:14.

Fulford Golf Club to the world stage is a welcome one. I remember

:17:14.:17:19.

coming in the early 1980s and it's lovely to see it being used for

:17:19.:17:25.

this event and in such good condition. This is a practice day.

:17:25.:17:32.

Do they get nervous? I am sure they will tomorrow. It is nice they can

:17:32.:17:37.

have a couple of practice days. They have probably seen the course

:17:37.:17:44.

quite a bit. We have had practice rounds and it will be good to get

:17:44.:17:48.

going and focus on the job in hand. That Swedish ladies are a

:17:48.:17:53.

formidable team. The forecasters looking good and it is hoped the

:17:53.:17:58.

crowds will turn out in force. The course looks superb and that is a

:17:58.:18:03.

credit to the ground staff. lads come in at five o'clock in the

:18:03.:18:08.

morning. Some of them will go around and cut the greens. What I

:18:08.:18:14.

and the other lad will be doing, areas like this on the green, where

:18:14.:18:21.

it is trying, we will hand water those areas -- where it is dry. It

:18:21.:18:27.

keeps its uniform. Everyone believes that the weather forecast

:18:27.:18:30.

can be believed for the rest of the week.

:18:30.:18:35.

Not a bad opening ceremony. The last of the 19 nations make their

:18:35.:18:42.

way. There is cheering for England, who are one of the favourites. This

:18:42.:18:48.

is a free event. We encourage the public to watch the event. The

:18:48.:18:55.

standard will be fantastic. Please come and watch. What time does it

:18:55.:19:02.

start? It will be on until Saturday, tomorrow it starts at 7:30am and

:19:02.:19:09.

the last time out well before 3pm. Some of these ladies are incredible.

:19:09.:19:19.
:19:19.:19:20.

They hit the ball farther than I do. -- Harry, most people hit the ball

:19:20.:19:25.

further. You are based just abound here. How

:19:25.:19:31.

good is the standard? The standard is magnificent. These are the

:19:31.:19:35.

future Tour players. This is the final amateur step before they turn

:19:35.:19:40.

to the professional ranks. It is nice that the event is given a bit

:19:40.:19:44.

of colour and the importance with this kind of event, it shows a lot

:19:44.:19:50.

of work has gone into it. It is magnificent. The club is absolutely

:19:50.:19:54.

magnificent, the best condition I have seen in 30 years. We are

:19:54.:19:59.

looking forward to it. Just a word about the ladies in the England

:19:59.:20:06.

side we should look out for. All of them. The Swedish and the Spaniards

:20:06.:20:14.

are quite good. Sweden, Spain, Germany, Italy. So many good teams.

:20:14.:20:20.

Do you expect a big crowd? We would like a big crowd. I would like to

:20:20.:20:25.

say if you have free time and play golf in Yorkshire, come down to

:20:25.:20:30.

Fulford Golf Club. The background to this has been a remarkable build

:20:30.:20:34.

up in the preparation. I have been speaking to the groundsman who has

:20:34.:20:38.

spent a lot of time getting the greens perfect. The scene is set.

:20:38.:20:45.

From early tomorrow morning, come on down. This is a free event. The

:20:45.:20:49.

standard of golf is quite remarkable. From everybody Hay, I

:20:49.:20:58.

will hand you back to the studio. Best of luck to the England team.

:20:58.:21:01.

Next tonight, a tot of whisky and an active youth are what

:21:01.:21:05.

Sheffield's Ralph Tarrant credits for his longevity. He turned 110

:21:05.:21:08.

this weekend and is Britain's oldest man. He enjoyed a party with

:21:08.:21:12.

his family in his home city to mark the day. Tom Ingall has been to

:21:12.:21:17.

meet him. Went to reach 110, a scrapbook of

:21:17.:21:22.

your life is something of a weighty tome. Frequent are the occasions

:21:22.:21:26.

when reporter's knock on your door to ask the secret of a long life.

:21:26.:21:33.

Happy birthday. Thanks. I had a bit of a do at Rutland Hotel. It was

:21:33.:21:41.

quite a nice to from the day until 430. We had a few drinks. I have

:21:41.:21:50.

never been one who would sit in a pub. Give me a glass of lager, my

:21:50.:21:58.

lunch, I am satisfied. I never drink above one. He will confess to

:21:58.:22:05.

a tot of whisky, that no doubt helps when birthdays come with

:22:05.:22:09.

great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. There are many cards

:22:09.:22:13.

to a range and he has had so many telegrams, Her Majesty is

:22:13.:22:18.

practically a pen-pal. When I was young and fit, I did not have an

:22:18.:22:28.
:22:28.:22:32.

idle moment. I loved swimming. I once tried to swim from Scarborough

:22:32.:22:42.
:22:42.:22:44.

South. I got pulled over with the coastguard. Have you put the tea

:22:44.:22:51.

in? Yes. A in 2008, we filmed Ralph and his wife as they filmed their

:22:51.:22:57.

wedding anniversary, becoming the longest married couple until her

:22:57.:23:07.
:23:07.:23:08.

death at 102. It is an achievement. I do not think one in a million. I

:23:08.:23:13.

am second in line to be the oldest man in Europe. It has been an

:23:13.:23:23.
:23:23.:23:23.

longer and rich life. And I can only at the words so far.

:23:23.:23:28.

Absolutely wonderful. Happy birthday from everybody head. It

:23:28.:23:34.

has been a hot weekend. We have the Great Yorkshire Show tomorrow and a

:23:34.:23:38.

lot of sunshine tonight. It is a different picture there from last

:23:38.:23:44.

year. What a pleasure to be here wearing

:23:44.:23:51.

a T-shirt. My shorts will be on tomorrow. In June last year, it was

:23:51.:23:55.

the wettest on record and we were in the middle of the wetter summer

:23:55.:24:00.

for a century. We can remind ourselves how bad it was at the

:24:00.:24:05.

show last year. Last year was the wettest summer in 100 years with

:24:05.:24:09.

many events cancelled, which cost millions to the local economy. The

:24:10.:24:13.

Great Yorkshire Show, the largest agricultural show in England, was

:24:14.:24:20.

the biggest casualty. Never before had it been cancelled because of

:24:20.:24:26.

adverse weather conditions. A 154th show has been cancelled for

:24:26.:24:31.

the next two days. It is because of this, there was a deluge this

:24:31.:24:35.

afternoon. The decision came before we went

:24:35.:24:38.

live on air at the end of the first day and it followed another

:24:38.:24:43.

afternoon of torrential rain, which caused the parking facilities to

:24:43.:24:50.

become unusable. The cancellation cost 2 million. This year,

:24:50.:24:54.

organisers left nothing to chance. This is how they improve things.

:24:54.:24:57.

This is how they improve things. More than three miles of temporary

:24:57.:25:03.

roads, almost 13,000 tons of stone and five-and-a-half 1,000 metres of

:25:03.:25:10.

and five-and-a-half 1,000 metres of drainage. There is 170 acres of

:25:10.:25:17.

extra parking. There is better access and we have drainage to make

:25:17.:25:22.

sure we get water away. We have done housekeeping and maintenance

:25:22.:25:26.

exercise is to make sure that if rain falls, it gets away so that

:25:26.:25:32.

people can get in and out quickly. This year could be no it -- could

:25:32.:25:38.

not be more different. The organisers are confident that if

:25:38.:25:46.

heavy rain returns, a repeat of last year will not happen again.

:25:46.:25:50.

There are winners and losers. People selling umbrellas made a

:25:50.:25:57.

fortune last summer. The person selling hats nearby it is ordering

:25:57.:25:59.

selling hats nearby it is ordering extra. It will be a fantastic

:25:59.:26:04.

forecast. If you like it hot, tomorrow could

:26:04.:26:11.

be one of the hottest parts to the show on record. 28 degrees. If you

:26:11.:26:18.

do not like the heat, Wednesday does look cooler and cloud. It will

:26:18.:26:23.

still be dry. You might enjoy that. If you like it in between, first

:26:23.:26:31.

day, brightening up later. This evening, sunny, overnight dry with

:26:31.:26:41.
:26:41.:26:44.

clear spells. Cloud and missed will increase later. -- mist. Tomorrow,

:26:44.:26:49.

it will be a grey start. Less extensive than this morning and

:26:49.:26:54.

burning of quickly. It looks like unbroken sunshine for everybody

:26:54.:27:04.
:27:04.:27:05.

through the morning. We can look at the temperatures. It could get up

:27:05.:27:12.

to 29, making it the hottest day of the year so far. Do not forget your

:27:12.:27:16.

suncream and your hat. Wednesday, cloudy, brightening up on Thursday.

:27:16.:27:22.

On Friday, it might turn out to be the hottest day of the year. The

:27:22.:27:26.

temperature you can see is conservative and it might get up to

:27:26.:27:31.

30 degrees in some areas on Friday afternoon. The good news is that

:27:31.:27:35.

afternoon. The good news is that the beer tent has opened early.
