Look North. Tonight, the widow of a church organist says she forgives | :00:06. | :00:11.
his killers. Two men were today found guilty of killing Alan Greaves | :00:11. | :00:21.
:00:21. | :00:22. | ||
as he walked to Midnight Mass. was a man who was driven by love and | :00:22. | :00:28.
compassion and he would not want anyone to hold on to feelings of | :00:28. | :00:31.
hate and unforgiveness. We'll be live from High Green with the full | :00:31. | :00:33.
story. Also tonight, another delay for the | :00:33. | :00:36.
contentious potash mine planned for the North York Moors National Park. | :00:36. | :00:39.
And these little piggies have a new home as a Yorkshire tourist | :00:40. | :00:49.
attraction puts its money where its mouth is. | :00:49. | :00:59.
:00:59. | :01:04. | ||
Yet neither fine, summers day. Good evening and welcome to Look | :01:04. | :01:08.
North. First tonight, the widow of a church organist who was brutally | :01:08. | :01:11.
attacked as he walked to Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve has said she | :01:11. | :01:15.
forgives the men who killed her husband in Sheffield. Alan Greaves | :01:15. | :01:18.
suffered appalling injuries when he was battered with a pick-axe handle | :01:18. | :01:22.
and died three days later in hospital. Today Ashley Foster, who's | :01:22. | :01:25.
22, was found not guilty of his murder but convicted of his | :01:25. | :01:27.
manslaughter. Another man, Jonathan Bowling, had already admitted | :01:27. | :01:33.
murder. In a moment, we'll hear in depth from his widow, Maureen, but | :01:33. | :01:36.
first, our crime correspondent, John Cundy, has been following the day's | :01:36. | :01:46.
:01:46. | :01:48. | ||
dramatic events. Just reminders of the background of this attack. | :01:48. | :01:52.
Greaves had made this walk on Christmas Eve the many years, | :01:52. | :01:57.
lonely. A few minutes earlier, a few minutes later, he would never have | :01:58. | :02:03.
crumb -- come across the two men, but he did. One of the men was | :02:03. | :02:10.
roaming around with a pick-up is handled. He would take his anger out | :02:10. | :02:15.
on someone. He was brutally battered around the head, never recovered | :02:15. | :02:19.
from those head injuries. Ashley Foster was with him and tried to | :02:19. | :02:24.
calm him down and told him not to attack, but the jury believes that | :02:24. | :02:29.
while Ashley Postel is not guilty of murder, he had some responsibility | :02:29. | :02:33.
for the attack. A fortnight after, the police got their big | :02:33. | :02:38.
breakthrough. They released CCTV footage showing the two men. They | :02:39. | :02:43.
were quickly identified by members of the community and an arrest soon | :02:43. | :02:52.
followed. His widow has been very brave. What has she had to say? | :02:52. | :02:58.
has shown a great deal of dignity and courage, supported by the deep | :02:58. | :03:02.
religious beliefs. She made it very clear afterwards that Alan would | :03:02. | :03:10.
never have wanted anybody to hate these men. Alan was a man who was | :03:10. | :03:15.
driven by love and compassion and he would not want any of us to hold | :03:15. | :03:20.
onto feelings of hate and unforgiveness. My prayer is that | :03:20. | :03:26.
Jonathan and Ashley will come to understand and experience the love | :03:26. | :03:34.
and kindness of a God who made them in his own image and that God is | :03:34. | :03:41.
great mercy will inspire both of them to true repentance. | :03:41. | :03:49.
detective superintendent paid tribute to what he said was the real | :03:49. | :03:53.
deep dignity of the family. heart, and the heart of my | :03:54. | :03:59.
investigation team, are with Maureen and Maureen 's family, who I cannot | :03:59. | :04:05.
express how I feel about them in terms of the dignity and how they | :04:05. | :04:07.
have presented themselves and carried themselves through this | :04:07. | :04:16.
difficult time. Jonathan, right from the start, admitted his guilt. | :04:17. | :04:22.
Ashley Foster, who made no secret of the fact he was with him that night | :04:22. | :04:27.
said he had stood back and was frightened. He told him not to | :04:27. | :04:32.
attack. He shouted no when he went for Alan Greaves right by these | :04:33. | :04:42.
:04:43. | :04:45. | ||
railings here. Tomorrow morning, they will be sentenced. Alan Foster | :04:45. | :04:51.
will also be sentenced for some responsibility for that attack. He | :04:51. | :04:56.
did have some responsibility in this terrible killing last Christmas Eve. | :04:56. | :05:00.
Well, on the night that Alan Greaves was attacked, he was on the way to | :05:00. | :05:03.
play the organ at St Saviour's Church. It was something the retired | :05:03. | :05:08.
social worker had done for 40 years. It prompted widespread shock and | :05:08. | :05:11.
revulsion among the local community that he had helped for many decades | :05:11. | :05:15.
but his widow, Maureen, says she has forgiven his killers. Our reporter, | :05:15. | :05:24.
Kate Bradbrook, spoke to her ahead of today's verdict. | :05:24. | :05:30.
My overwhelming emotion was bewilderment rather than deep | :05:30. | :05:36.
anger. I was bewildered by what had happened. I just couldn't conceive | :05:36. | :05:42.
that somebody could walk down the street and be so savagely attacked. | :05:42. | :05:46.
Described as a gentle soul, Alan Greaves was a retired social worker | :05:46. | :05:52.
with a strong Christian faith. Until his death, he and Maureen were | :05:52. | :05:56.
heavily involved in community outreach work across Sheffield. | :05:56. | :06:00.
fact he was prepared to go and visit an elderly person and spend time | :06:00. | :06:07.
with them when they didn't have anybody else to do that was the main | :06:07. | :06:11.
quality he had. He was good at it, partly because he was prepared to | :06:11. | :06:16.
give that time as a volunteer and just because he was a good people | :06:16. | :06:26.
:06:26. | :06:28. | ||
person. So much of a people person, in fact, that before his death, he | :06:28. | :06:33.
and Maureen opened a food bank close to their home. The idea was simple | :06:33. | :06:40.
colon that no one in high green should go hungry. You live in the | :06:40. | :06:42.
community and you think everyone is as well offers each other and are | :06:43. | :06:50.
not. People really need this food bank. It's nice to be part of | :06:50. | :06:56.
helping others. That would make Alan so happy. Alan 's legacy will | :06:56. | :07:01.
continue. The Maureen, forgiving her attackers was an important step in | :07:01. | :07:08.
moving on. It was hard. It sounds so easy, I have forgiven them. It has | :07:08. | :07:12.
been one of the hardest things in my life I have had to do. And yet, | :07:12. | :07:22.
:07:22. | :07:22. | ||
having done it, I have found that I have benefited from it. What do you | :07:22. | :07:27.
hope will happen to the people that attacked Alan? I'm hoping both men | :07:27. | :07:33.
will find some sense of true sorrow and repentance of what they have | :07:33. | :07:37.
done. And perhaps themselves learn to know that God loves them and God | :07:37. | :07:43.
had a better plan for their lives and find, imprisoned, a journey they | :07:43. | :07:53.
:07:53. | :07:54. | ||
can go on where they will be able to think about what they have done. It | :07:54. | :08:02.
then begins a new chapter. Kind of getting down to really facing | :08:02. | :08:09.
singleness in the months and years ahead. We are going to have a family | :08:09. | :08:14.
party. It will have some joyful occasions and sad moments in it and | :08:14. | :08:19.
we will celebrate the end of the trial. We will have a little cry | :08:19. | :08:27.
because we do miss as a family. And that's what we will do. | :08:27. | :08:31.
A decision on whether to allow a potash mine to be built in the North | :08:31. | :08:34.
York Moors National Park has been put off for the third time. The | :08:34. | :08:37.
contentious proposal was due before planners this afternoon but the | :08:37. | :08:39.
developers, Sirius Minerals, asked for a deferment to address | :08:39. | :08:43.
environmental issues. Supporters claim the proposal would be a | :08:43. | :08:49.
once-in-a-generation opportunity to create 3-4,000 jobs. They say the | :08:49. | :08:51.
contract's worth .1 billion but conservationists have a different | :08:51. | :08:57.
view. They say national parks were set up to stop this kind of | :08:57. | :09:07.
:09:07. | :09:09. | ||
large-scale industrial development. The potash mine plans first came to | :09:09. | :09:15.
light in January, 2011. They are detailed and complex. The company | :09:15. | :09:18.
behind the scheme has asked for the decision on planning permission to | :09:19. | :09:25.
be deferred a third time. The National Park is less than happy. | :09:25. | :09:29.
It's not easy. It will be disruptive. But the uncertainty not | :09:29. | :09:36.
helpful to us. It is important for the area and national park as a | :09:36. | :09:42.
whole. The company needs more time. We don't want to refuse that. | :09:42. | :09:49.
company claims the mine will create 1000 jobs and use local companies. | :09:49. | :09:58.
This quarry will supply limestone as building aggregate. 140 tonnes is | :09:58. | :10:08.
:10:08. | :10:08. | ||
double R Alpert. For people like David, the company's interest has | :10:08. | :10:13.
provided a lifeline. It's one of the leaders of the industry in this | :10:13. | :10:19.
area. There isn't that much elsewhere around here now. | :10:19. | :10:23.
Objections to the mine have been fairly low in number, but there are | :10:23. | :10:28.
some people opposed to the plans. Essentially, it's something that | :10:28. | :10:35.
will damage the environment, we think, and it's a major industrial | :10:35. | :10:39.
intrusion in a national park. Planning permission had been due to | :10:39. | :10:44.
be turned down all granted on the 29th of this month. The company has | :10:44. | :10:49.
said the new delay has come about because it wants to give planners | :10:49. | :10:53.
here is more essential environmental information. It also was to deal | :10:53. | :10:59.
with a critical report carried out by the consultant engineer. The | :10:59. | :11:03.
report claimed the Minehead doesn't have to be cited in the national | :11:03. | :11:08.
park. It pointed up the destruction in the construction phase and | :11:08. | :11:18.
:11:18. | :11:27. | ||
highlighted flood risks. Another delay must be quite frustrating. The | :11:28. | :11:29.
people who want clarity, it just drags on. | :11:29. | :11:32.
Later on Look North: Full steam ahead! A 1 billion investment | :11:32. | :11:41.
promises commuters bigger, faster In other news now, a man's been | :11:41. | :11:44.
summoned to court to face a charge of gross negligence manslaughter | :11:44. | :11:46.
after the death of a toddler in Sheffield. Two-year-old Rayaheen | :11:46. | :11:50.
Banimuslim died a year ago after falling from the fourth floor of an | :11:50. | :11:53.
apartment block where she lived. Robert Warner was contracted to | :11:53. | :11:56.
carry out maintenance work in the flats. He'll appear before | :11:56. | :12:00.
magistrates next month. West Yorkshire and South Yorkshire | :12:00. | :12:03.
Police forces have both been criticised for not doing enough to | :12:03. | :12:06.
cut costs. Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary accused | :12:06. | :12:10.
both forces of not working hard enough to cope with reduced funding. | :12:10. | :12:16.
Inspectors said neither had embraced the level of change needed. | :12:16. | :12:19.
The MP for Bradford East, David Ward, has been suspended from the | :12:19. | :12:23.
Lib Dems. It's because of a tweet he wrote describing Israel as a | :12:23. | :12:27.
"Zionist state". It follows a long-running dispute with the | :12:27. | :12:29.
party's leadership over earlier tweets about Israel's treatment of | :12:29. | :12:34.
Palestinians. Mr Ward says he won't apologise. | :12:34. | :12:37.
The water supply to almost 100 luxury flats in Leeds has been fully | :12:37. | :12:41.
restored after it failed for the third time in 12 months. Portable | :12:41. | :12:43.
toilets and bottled water were brought in yesterday to the | :12:43. | :12:47.
apartments at West Point. The management company has apologised | :12:47. | :12:53.
for the disruption caused. 50 firefighters have been tackling a | :12:53. | :12:57.
large blaze at a supermarket in Bradford. The fire, at the Pakeezah | :12:57. | :13:00.
store on Ingleby Road in Girlington, started during the busy lunchtime | :13:00. | :13:06.
shopping period. None of the 15 staff or 20 customers were injured | :13:06. | :13:16.
:13:16. | :13:16. | ||
but all the stock has been destroyed. I just shouted, fire, | :13:17. | :13:22.
fire, everybody out, please! Leave the building, leave your shopping. | :13:22. | :13:27.
Less than two minutes, we got everybody out. It has been very | :13:27. | :13:32.
difficult with the heat. We have had breathing apparatus crews inside the | :13:32. | :13:37.
building. Normally, that is quite a strenuous activity in itself, but | :13:37. | :13:46.
when it is so hot, it is very difficult to get relief. | :13:46. | :13:52.
Next tonight, some good news for commuters. 1.2 billion worth of new | :13:52. | :13:56.
trains have been ordered to run on the East Coast Main Line. The | :13:56. | :13:59.
trains, which will be in use by 2019, will provide more seats. They | :13:59. | :14:02.
should also improve reliability and cut journey times to London. Our | :14:02. | :14:05.
political editor, Len Tingle, joins us now. Just explain what has been | :14:05. | :14:15.
:14:15. | :14:17. | ||
going on. The government will buy 270 carriages. They call them train | :14:17. | :14:21.
sets! They will then release them back to the train operating | :14:21. | :14:25.
companies. It is largely aimed at the East Coast Main line, the link | :14:26. | :14:34.
between London and Yorkshire. At the moment, they are operating trains | :14:34. | :14:38.
designed for two years ago. I popped down to Leeds station and spoke to | :14:38. | :14:42.
people who had just come off those trains. What they were saying was | :14:42. | :14:46.
they welcomed it but some of them did question whether we can afford | :14:46. | :14:56.
:14:56. | :14:59. | ||
this sort of public investment right now. I am kind of in two minds. But | :14:59. | :15:07.
if the carriage is good, then yes. They are outdated, but they are OK. | :15:07. | :15:14.
If that's a protection action to the service, it's a good spend. | :15:14. | :15:20.
really a new announcement, is it? cleverly used the word confirmed | :15:20. | :15:26.
because this plan was put together in 2005 by the then Labour | :15:26. | :15:34.
government. We knew who was going to make them. As you said, they will be | :15:34. | :15:40.
wider, faster, more comfortable. They will travel at speeds of 140 | :15:40. | :15:45.
miles an hour, knocking six minutes of the time between Leeds and | :15:45. | :15:53.
London. But what's interesting is that it also means that it will be | :15:53. | :15:56.
British jobs because the first tranche of that money was announced | :15:56. | :16:01.
last year. All of them will be made by the Japanese company but they | :16:01. | :16:07.
will be made at a brand-new factory up in County Durham. It will be | :16:07. | :16:13.
British workers making these fast trains. That's a double hit as far | :16:13. | :16:19.
as the Secretary of State for transport is concerned. | :16:19. | :16:23.
justification is that it is representing good value for money | :16:23. | :16:27.
and shows we are investing in new rolling stock. We are seeing more | :16:27. | :16:32.
and more people using RL ways who want new rolling stock. More legroom | :16:32. | :16:42.
:16:42. | :16:43. | ||
and nicer loos get my vote! It will be 2019 before they are in position. | :16:43. | :16:49.
Ten years later, we ought to have the new high-speed trains. The idea | :16:49. | :16:54.
is that this will make sure they can compete against that really fast | :16:54. | :16:57.
London to Yorkshire Link when it opens so that we will have two lots | :16:57. | :17:05.
of trains for what is a really fast expanding market. Our very own | :17:05. | :17:07.
bullet train! Before seven o'clock: We hear from | :17:07. | :17:10.
golden girl Jessica Ennis-Hill. Sidelined with injury since the | :17:10. | :17:17.
Olympics, she tells us about her comeback. | :17:17. | :17:23.
The expansion plan that the home of the furry animals at the farm that | :17:23. | :17:28.
visitors flock to see. Sport now and in cricket, Yorkshire | :17:28. | :17:32.
remain well on top in their County Championship match at Chesterfield. | :17:32. | :17:39.
They amassed a staggering total of 617. Alex Lees made 275, the 11th | :17:39. | :17:42.
highest innings in Yorkshire's history, and the bowlers have been | :17:42. | :17:44.
just as unforgiving, reducing Derbyshire to 94 for five at the | :17:45. | :17:54.
:17:55. | :18:00. | ||
close of play. Yorkshire will be very happy with that. | :18:00. | :18:03.
Meanwhile, another Yorkshire cricketer has been making his mark | :18:03. | :18:06.
in the latest Ashes test at Lords. Johnny Bairstow made a half century | :18:06. | :18:09.
to help England recover from a shaky start against Australia. He was | :18:09. | :18:13.
eventually out for 67, short of his previous international best of 95. | :18:13. | :18:17.
Earlier, Joe Root was bowled for just six runs. | :18:17. | :18:20.
Now, she's gone from being the centre of attention at the Olympics | :18:20. | :18:23.
to being on the sidelines. Jessica Ennis-Hill, as she's called since | :18:23. | :18:26.
getting married earlier this year, hasn't competed since taking gold at | :18:26. | :18:32.
last summer's London Games. An injury has held her back but she | :18:32. | :18:42.
:18:42. | :18:44. | ||
hopes to make a return in time for a special anniversary. | :18:44. | :18:49.
Jessica Ennis Hill puts on a performance of a live to take gold | :18:49. | :18:54.
at last summer 's Olympics. The perfect result at the right time. | :18:54. | :18:58.
But the London games were not just about her performance in the | :18:58. | :19:03.
heptathlon. She was the face of the games, the focus of a nation 's | :19:03. | :19:08.
hopes and she admits that she felt the pressure. I was very nervous. I | :19:08. | :19:13.
had to put a brave face on and portray that everything was going | :19:13. | :19:19.
well and I was confident but, deep down, Sessions didn't always go | :19:19. | :19:25.
well, I was struggling with the long jump and I was very anxious to what | :19:25. | :19:31.
the games would bring because it was a lance -- once-in-a-lifetime | :19:31. | :19:35.
opportunity. This season, she has been kept off the track by an ankle | :19:35. | :19:45.
:19:45. | :19:45. | ||
injury. It's going to be close but I'm still not ruling out. I've got | :19:45. | :19:49.
to the point where I know it will be a very different year this year, not | :19:49. | :19:55.
like previous years where I have been able to prepare and do lots of | :19:55. | :20:01.
events. This year is very different. Her main goal this season is the | :20:02. | :20:06.
world championships. She lost her world crown two years ago, but even | :20:07. | :20:15.
with injury troubles, you wouldn't bet against her it back. We wish her | :20:15. | :20:21.
a speedy recovery. We need to back, and I am sure she will be winning | :20:21. | :20:23.
more medals. A ten-year-old book lover has helped | :20:23. | :20:26.

:20:56. | :20:58. | ||
just to get up in the morning. Harry needs want to stop him reading! | :20:58. | :21:08.
:21:08. | :21:10. | ||
love books. I came down here and I was asked to short -- to sort out | :21:10. | :21:16.
the shelves. And because I did a good job, I was nominated Junior | :21:16. | :21:21.
librarian. With books, you can use your imagination more than you can | :21:21. | :21:27.
playing a video game. When the local library service stopped, Harry | :21:27. | :21:34.
stepped forward to keep reading alive. Harry, being an avid reader, | :21:34. | :21:38.
has been nominated as the children's librarian so he can encourage | :21:38. | :21:43.
children to come and enjoy books. He loves reading. In fact, he read so | :21:43. | :21:50.
much, we set an alarm clock to stop him reading at night time! Regular | :21:51. | :22:00.
:22:01. | :22:08. | ||
members say Harry is fantastic with polite. He's a pleasure to have | :22:09. | :22:13.
around and it is delightful to seem with the younger children. He is | :22:13. | :22:18.
clearly very intelligent and has a great future ahead of him. So what | :22:18. | :22:23.
does the future hold for him? would like to be a writer. Lots of | :22:23. | :22:31.
people have said if I wanted to do it, I could. I just let my | :22:31. | :22:35.
imagination run wild. So forget Harry Potter, Harry McMurray will be | :22:36. | :22:44.
all the name of the best seller list any time soon. He's a bit of a | :22:45. | :22:50.
bookworm, isn't he? My ten-year-old also likes books, but that's very | :22:50. | :22:53.
keen, isn't it? One of Yorkshire's leading tourist | :22:53. | :22:56.
attractions is ignoring the economic gloom and investing heavily in new | :22:56. | :23:06.
premises. They believe it's worth taking the risk to bring more jobs | :23:06. | :23:11.
and revenue into the area. Danny Carpenter reports from Cannon Hall | :23:11. | :23:19.
Farm in South Yorkshire. Cannon Hall farm is already an | :23:19. | :23:24.
award-winning tourism business. Now, they want to be a major tourism | :23:24. | :23:29.
business and are investing 1.5 billion into making that dream a | :23:29. | :23:35.
reality. Tell us about the design here. What we have tried to achieve | :23:35. | :23:42.
is an escape route of the piglets. This is while they are being born or | :23:42. | :23:47.
straight after birth when they are vulnerable. They need to be able to | :23:47. | :23:54.
get away if the sour is a little bit clumsy. We have got underfloor | :23:54. | :24:04.
:24:04. | :24:08. | ||
heating. We do not want to overheat the sour. It's probably 5-star pig | :24:08. | :24:16.
accommodation! We have built a viewing gallery. We have built a | :24:16. | :24:21.
milking store. We will show the last 200 years of milk production through | :24:21. | :24:30.
the various breeds. We have got to female llamas in this pen. They have | :24:30. | :24:40.
:24:40. | :24:40. | ||
just come in from outside. There are four females and a little baby one, | :24:40. | :24:46.
only a fortnight old. Some sheep here. These are from the West Coast | :24:46. | :24:51.
of Scotland and they would normally feed on seaweed, so obviously, we | :24:51. | :24:56.
have got no seaweed, but they like their head. We feel that if we | :24:56. | :25:01.
invest now, when other people are not, and give it 110%, we think this | :25:01. | :25:09.
can be the right time to do it and get the farm on the tourism map. | :25:09. | :25:15.
ever been there? Yes, but since the upgrade, that's what we call a farm! | :25:15. | :25:22.
I like to see behind the scenes. Are there any deckchairs left on the | :25:22. | :25:27.
beach? Fewer deckchairs this weekend. Yes, because you are | :25:27. | :25:37.
:25:37. | :25:45. | ||
me skip onto my first graphic because I have not even shown you | :25:45. | :25:50.
tonight whether pictures! That epitomises a summer morning, taken | :25:50. | :25:56.
at 5am. Is that part of the world that has had 29 degrees this | :25:56. | :26:02.
afternoon. Quite unusual for the Pennines. The Vale of York has had | :26:02. | :26:10.
29 degrees as well. The second picture, beautiful! The sun setting | :26:10. | :26:19.
just off junction 24! The forecast: This is what you want to see: Sunny | :26:19. | :26:25.
and hot for many of us tomorrow, but changes for the weekend. The high | :26:25. | :26:29.
pressure changes shape and allows low cloud to come in from the North | :26:29. | :26:34.
Sea. Everywhere starting of grey. It should gradually break up but the | :26:34. | :26:39.
coast might have a disappointing weekend. But hardly a cloud in the | :26:39. | :26:46.
sky right now. This evening, warm, plenty of sunshine, patchy cloud, | :26:46. | :26:52.
overnight looks clear. Lowest temperatures 11-15dC. The sun will | :26:52. | :27:01.
rise in the morning at 5am. A bit of mist and patchy fog in places, | :27:01. | :27:08.
otherwise, a beautiful start. Long spells of sunshine, the hint of a | :27:08. | :27:13.
little sea mist. But for many, another lovely day and once more, if | :27:13. | :27:23.
:27:23. | :27:23. | ||
you want to escape the heat, it is here without cooling onshore breeze. | :27:23. | :27:28.
Much more cloud over the weekend which will gradually break up | :27:28. | :27:31. |
