Marmaris On Look North tonight: Victims of the shootings in Turkey | :00:00. | :00:09.
are comforted by relatives, as the family of the man accused of Anne | :00:09. | :00:12.
Bury's killing claim he'd been in a relationship with her for a number | :00:12. | :00:16.
of years. Also tonight, pursuing justice, 20 years on. A woman from | :00:16. | :00:22.
Bradford heads back to America to stop the early release of her | :00:22. | :00:27.
partner's killer. And we're in Harrogate for the annual Autumn | :00:27. | :00:30.
Flower Show — a must for gardeners of all varieties. Indeed. It was a | :00:30. | :00:41.
lovely afternoon in Harrogate. For the next few days, join me for the | :00:41. | :00:43.
details in 15 minutes. First, it was a story that made | :00:43. | :01:04.
headlines on both sides of the Atlantic back in 1993. A couple from | :01:04. | :01:07.
Bradford shot in their car in a secluded highway rest area in | :01:07. | :01:16.
Florida. Margaret Jagger was injured. Her partner Gary Colley | :01:16. | :01:24.
shot dead. Now, by a cruel coincidence, Margaret will find | :01:24. | :01:26.
herself back in court tomorrow, confronting one of the gunmen on the | :01:27. | :01:30.
20th anniversary of the killing. She'll give evidence to try to stop | :01:30. | :01:33.
the early release of Aundra Akins from prison. Our Crime Correspondent | :01:33. | :01:36.
John Cundy has this exclusive report. Tomorrow, Margaret Jagger | :01:36. | :01:38.
will deliver perfect and impact statement in court. She will say why | :01:38. | :01:41.
she thinks Aundra Akins, who fired the fatal bullet which killed her | :01:41. | :01:43.
partner, Gary Colley, should have his 27 year life sentence tariff | :01:43. | :01:47.
extended. It was a crime that shocked even the American public, | :01:47. | :01:52.
hardened by violent gun crime in their communities. It had been a | :01:52. | :01:56.
botched robbery. In a lonely lay—by, Aundra Akins had broached | :01:56. | :02:02.
the parked car of Gary Colley, demanding money and began firing | :02:02. | :02:08.
guns into the car. One of the bullets hit Gary Colley. Margaret | :02:08. | :02:13.
Jagger was left cradling Gary Colley as he bled to death in her arms. The | :02:13. | :02:18.
start of Margaret Jagger's dreadful nightmare. Even as she prepared to | :02:18. | :02:23.
confront the killers in court, she said she could not find it in her | :02:23. | :02:29.
heart, to hate them. As the months and years went by, time and again, | :02:29. | :02:34.
Margaret Jagger returned to the States to give evidence during | :02:34. | :02:50.
several court trials. Margaret said that many locals around Tallahassee | :02:50. | :02:53.
had told her of their disgust at what happened and there was a | :02:53. | :02:58.
tearful apology at one stage to Margaret Jagger from the mother of | :02:58. | :03:04.
Aundra Akins, for the murderous actions of her son. If there was | :03:04. | :03:16.
anything I could do, I would do it. Please, find it in your heart to | :03:16. | :03:25.
forgive. Eventually, Aundra Akins and his accomplice where given life | :03:25. | :03:32.
sentence for the of Gary Colley and the attempted murder of Margaret | :03:32. | :03:37.
Jagger. Now, he is nearing parole for being a model prisoner and | :03:37. | :03:39.
tomorrow, Margaret Jagger will be back in court, as lawyers seek to | :03:40. | :03:46.
have his 27 year life sentence tariff extended. She's doing fine. | :03:46. | :03:55.
She is trying to move on with life. She needs to testify. And tonight, | :03:55. | :04:03.
Margaret Jagger is making final preparations for that court | :04:03. | :04:07.
hearing, to once more face, across a courtroom, the man who murdered Gary | :04:07. | :04:13.
Colley exactly 20 years ago, and almost took her life. | :04:13. | :04:24.
been speaking to Margaret. What has she been saying? She is trying to | :04:24. | :04:29.
keep a low profile. She is extremely nervous about appearing in court. | :04:29. | :04:33.
This will be the fifth or sixth time she has had to face the killer of | :04:33. | :04:37.
killers of Gary Colley, her long—time partner, in an American | :04:37. | :04:42.
court, and it is a dramatic moment for her. 20 years on, you might | :04:42. | :04:48.
think she had left it all behind but she is there to say that the impact | :04:48. | :04:55.
on her has never left the, and she is trying to get the sentence of | :04:55. | :05:00.
Aundra Akins extended. He is coming up for parole shortly. What kind of | :05:00. | :05:07.
formality will it be tomorrow? What can we expect? She will give a | :05:07. | :05:13.
victim impact statement. The prosecuting lawyers will have their | :05:14. | :05:18.
say. They will say why this man should have his sentence extended. | :05:18. | :05:22.
The last time she saw this man in court, he was a boy of 14, now he's | :05:22. | :05:29.
a grown man, at 34. And everything goes back to this appalling moment | :05:29. | :05:34.
when Gary Colley was shot dead in front of her, when she was cradling | :05:34. | :05:38.
him, as he died. It is bound to be automatic occasion for her. —— bound | :05:39. | :05:51.
to be a traumatic occasion. Lots more to come in tonight's programme: | :05:51. | :05:59.
Tanya's searching out our sports stars of the future. Paralympian | :05:59. | :06:02.
Hannah Cockcroft was discovered at a School Games event in the past. | :06:02. | :06:05.
Today could well have revealed some more. Next, we hear from the parents | :06:05. | :06:20.
of the man accused of shooting a woman from North Yorkshire at her | :06:20. | :06:23.
holiday villa in Turkey. They say their son loved Anne Bury, and that | :06:23. | :06:26.
he'd been in a relationship with her for the past six years. But lately | :06:26. | :06:31.
they'd argued over money. Tonight, Anne's son Alex remains in hospital | :06:31. | :06:35.
and the family have denied that she and the gardener Veli Acar were | :06:36. | :06:41.
together. We will have more on that story in our late Latin. —— our late | :06:41. | :06:52.
bulletin. The jury in the trial of the Sheffield Wednesday footballer | :06:52. | :06:55.
Gary Madine has been sent home for the night, after failing to reach a | :06:55. | :06:59.
verdict today. The centre—forward is accused of two unprovoked assaults | :06:59. | :07:02.
in two Sheffield nightclubs within five weeks of each other. Mr Madine | :07:02. | :07:05.
denies charges of causing grievous bodily harm in one case and causing | :07:05. | :07:08.
grievous bodily harm with intent on a second charge. The jury will | :07:08. | :07:11.
continue deliberating tomorrow. A convicted killer who absconded from | :07:11. | :07:14.
jail during a work licence has been found. Shakiel Shazad was serving 18 | :07:14. | :07:18.
years for his part in an arson attack in Huddersfield in 2002. | :07:18. | :07:21.
Eight members of the same family died in the fire at their home in | :07:21. | :07:24.
Birkby. West Yorkshire Police had issued an appeal for help to find | :07:24. | :07:28.
Shazad. But a few hours ago, he was discovered | :07:28. | :07:33.
road in the West Midlands. The man in charge of the investigation into | :07:33. | :07:35.
the Hillsborough disaster says he's looking into whether any crime such | :07:35. | :07:38.
as manslaughter was committed on the day. Jon Stoddart says that South | :07:38. | :07:41.
Yorkshire Police, Sheffield Wednesday Football Club, Sheffield | :07:41. | :07:43.
City Council and the Football Association could all face charges | :07:43. | :07:46.
of manslaughter through gross negligence. His comments followed a | :07:46. | :07:48.
meeting of families yesterday when some claimed the inquiry was taking | :07:48. | :07:52.
too long. But those investigating say it's a lengthy process. We have | :07:52. | :08:03.
several thousand documents, and events from 24 years ago, but the | :08:03. | :08:08.
investigation goes back to 1981, almost through to the present day. | :08:08. | :08:19.
We can look at compelling evidence that will enable us to take a fresh | :08:19. | :08:27.
look at the prosecutions. The Bradford—based supermarket Morrisons | :08:27. | :08:29.
has announced another fall in profits. There's been a 10% drop for | :08:29. | :08:32.
the first half of this year. Business experts say its late entry | :08:32. | :08:35.
into online shopping could be to blame. Morrisons is Britain's fourth | :08:36. | :08:38.
largest supermarket, behind Tesco, Asda and Sainsburys. The creator of | :08:38. | :08:43.
the After Eight mint, Brian Sollitt, has died. He was 74. During a | :08:43. | :08:54.
50—year career in York, the confectioner was most proud of his | :08:54. | :08:56.
after—dinner mint, despite being responsible for many other products. | :08:56. | :08:59.
Mr Sollitt's been described by Nestle as a "true craftsman", who | :08:59. | :09:03.
had a huge impact on the British chocolate industry. The family have | :09:03. | :09:06.
just announced his death, which happened in July. Sheffield band the | :09:06. | :09:08.
Arctic Monkeys have received their third Mercury Music Prize | :09:08. | :09:11.
nomination, and their latest album is already heading to the number one | :09:11. | :09:20.
spot. The album, A.M, was released on Monday and is currently | :09:20. | :09:23.
outselling the rest of the top 20 put together! And claiming the | :09:23. | :09:27.
number one spot this weekend will see them become the first band on an | :09:27. | :09:31.
independent label to have five consecutive number one albums. The | :09:31. | :09:44.
annual School Games got under way today at the Don Valley Stadium in | :09:44. | :09:48.
Sheffield — the last major athletics event to be held there before it | :09:48. | :09:53.
closes. I remember going back to the launch of the Don Valley Stadium, Ed | :09:53. | :09:56.
was the world student games a few years ago. The Universiad. The | :09:56. | :10:16.
School Games is a multi—sport event. In fact it was here that Paralympian | :10:16. | :10:19.
Hannah Cockcroft was first identified a few years back. Tanya | :10:19. | :10:22.
Arnold is there for us now. The stage is set for this multisport | :10:22. | :10:26.
event, which is quite a rarity for an athlete to take part in, and it | :10:26. | :10:30.
is considered important if they are going to go on to the Olympics and | :10:30. | :10:36.
Paralympics. A few lucky athletes also got to meet a couple of | :10:36. | :10:37.
superstars. The Don Valley Stadium, or set up for this final national | :10:37. | :10:48.
event before it closes. There today to give advice to the Atlas | :10:48. | :10:54.
performing were the Paralympic gold medallist, Hannah Cockroft and | :10:54. | :10:59.
Johnny Peacock. Hannah Cockroft was discovered at these games in 2007. | :10:59. | :11:06.
This is the only opportunity that you are going to get for a | :11:06. | :11:09.
multisport event like the Paralympics. It gave me a lot of | :11:09. | :11:13.
experience of what it was going to be like. It is an important event. | :11:13. | :11:17.
It will give them so many opportunities he's to get out there | :11:17. | :11:23.
and to show what they can do. Because it is my home ground it is | :11:23. | :11:28.
like going from the Olympic Stadium to your home track. All of my family | :11:28. | :11:35.
and friends are coming down and staying half a mile from where I | :11:35. | :11:40.
live. They got the Tram in today. Sheffield is such a great sporting | :11:40. | :11:46.
city. To have it here is special. Sheffield is ideal for the school | :11:46. | :11:49.
games because of the facilities it has right across the city. The | :11:50. | :11:53.
volleyball court under way at the Institute of sport. But with the Don | :11:53. | :11:59.
Valley Stadium closing, it could be the last such event. It could not be | :11:59. | :12:05.
in Sheffield in future because of this facility going, which is very | :12:05. | :12:13.
sad. And again, if you ask any athlete or coach or spectators who | :12:13. | :12:14.
come down here and train, losing a major facility, not just | :12:14. | :12:23.
for Sheffield but for the UK, really. A lot of investment is | :12:23. | :12:30.
needed in Whitburn Road if it is to come up to standard to host major | :12:30. | :12:36.
athletics events. I am joined by the scent and give state for culture, | :12:36. | :12:41.
media and sport, Maria Miller. I am guessing you did not envisage the | :12:41. | :12:46.
legacy of the Olympics being the closure of venues like the Don | :12:46. | :12:53.
Valley Stadium. The school games are important part of the legacy and it | :12:53. | :12:57.
is inspiring to talk to the young people I have met here from | :12:57. | :12:59.
England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, getting into the | :13:00. | :13:04.
games because of inspiration coming out of last year. But from athletes | :13:04. | :13:11.
in this city, it is an iconic structure that this closing, along | :13:11. | :13:13.
with leisure centres and swimming pools. The Don Valley Stadium has an | :13:13. | :13:20.
important place in the hearts of people in this area. I am sure that | :13:20. | :13:24.
it was a tough decision from the City Council to close it. I am very | :13:24. | :13:28.
pleased to see the investment that is being promised into Woodburn | :13:28. | :13:31.
Road, and I think that would be an important statement for how | :13:31. | :13:35.
important athletics still is in the city of Sheffield. Increasingly, it | :13:35. | :13:41.
is difficult to fund facilities. Swimming pools take a lot of money | :13:41. | :13:45.
to run. You think that the Government has to rethink this, that | :13:45. | :13:48.
councils can no longer afford to do it? Good councils investing sports | :13:48. | :13:53.
as facilities because they know how important they are for local first | :13:54. | :13:59.
—— local communities. We are having to make tough decisions in difficult | :13:59. | :14:02.
economic times, but cities like Sheffield have continued to invest | :14:02. | :14:07.
in good facilities and the school games here today show that young | :14:07. | :14:11.
people are coming through and we have a programme investing in | :14:11. | :14:13.
grassroots sports activities up and down the country, showing that sport | :14:13. | :14:17.
has never been stronger in this country, and I hope that one of the | :14:17. | :14:21.
biggest legacy is coming out of last year through these games is | :14:21. | :14:26.
continued participation by young people in sports, whatever they | :14:26. | :14:31.
choose, for life. Jake, give us an idea of what is in store, and what | :14:31. | :14:36.
is your role? It is going to be a fantastic night. We have been here | :14:36. | :14:41.
watching the rehearsals. Although the act are young and local, and | :14:41. | :14:45.
they are all fantastic. It is going to be a great night. You have had | :14:45. | :14:51.
some training in the run—up to this as well? Yes, I was talking to a BBC | :14:51. | :14:56.
commentator who has been giving us some tips and couple of weeks ago I | :14:56. | :15:03.
was in London talking to Jonathan Edwards. He gave us some do's and | :15:03. | :15:12.
don'ts. I could probably do with getting the list from you at some | :15:12. | :15:16.
point. We are now promising a spectacular opening ceremony. Coming | :15:16. | :15:29.
up before 7pm: We like to think we've got an eye for talent. So | :15:29. | :15:35.
we've been taking to this young woman who could be a strong | :15:35. | :15:38.
contender come the Olympics in Toyko. And join me at the Harrogate | :15:38. | :15:46.
Autumn flower show for some busting blooms and enormous onions. Let's | :15:46. | :15:56.
get back to that story from Turkey, the shooting of Anne Bury. Tears | :15:56. | :16:09.
from the family of the man accused of murdering Anne Bury. Outside | :16:09. | :16:15.
their home on the edge of town, his mother told me that he is not a | :16:15. | :16:21.
violent man. My child was a very good child and we love him very | :16:21. | :16:24.
much, but we do not know what happened. We love them very much and | :16:24. | :16:32.
now we are feeling very sad. This is where he is alleged to have come | :16:32. | :16:35.
with a shotgun, going through the house, shooting dead Anne Bury and | :16:35. | :16:40.
injuring her mother and son. It is thought to be an act of revenge by | :16:40. | :16:43.
Veli Acar after he had been questioned by police following | :16:43. | :16:49.
complaints made by the family that he had made threats against them. | :16:49. | :16:54.
The police investigation work appears to be over here at the | :16:54. | :16:58.
family's Villa. You can see there are enjoying a birthday party but | :16:58. | :17:03.
now there is police crime scene tape and medical equipment | :17:03. | :17:10.
still trying to work out exactly what was behind this attack, but | :17:10. | :17:13.
they face tough questions about their role in this attack, too. We | :17:13. | :17:21.
went to ask why they did not take warnings from the family seriously, | :17:21. | :17:25.
and why Veli Acar was released. But filming official buildings is not | :17:25. | :17:30.
allowed in Turkey. We were welcomed in and they offered us tea, but they | :17:30. | :17:33.
would not answer any questions. Their main suspect is still being | :17:33. | :17:39.
held. The family of Veli Acar claim that he was close to Anne Bury. Can | :17:39. | :17:44.
I ask you what was the relationship between Anne Bury and Veli Acar? You | :17:44. | :17:51.
must see their pictures that they have framed. It is two people in | :17:52. | :17:58.
love. He said that they had been together for six years, effectively | :17:58. | :18:03.
as a married couple. He was in love with her, and he loved her very | :18:03. | :18:06.
much. They enjoyed a healthy life together. They were very happy. We | :18:06. | :18:16.
are very confused now. The family of Anne Bury deny any relationship, but | :18:16. | :18:22.
both sets of relatives seem to agree that it was a row about this villa, | :18:22. | :18:28.
and about money, that escalated to such a violent conclusion. We will | :18:28. | :18:35.
update you on that at 10:25pm tonight. | :18:35. | :18:43.
United manager Brian McDermott has moved quickly to rule himself out of | :18:44. | :18:46.
the Republic of Ireland job. McDermott joined the Elland Road | :18:46. | :18:50.
club in April and has seen his side lose just once this season. He said | :18:50. | :18:54.
this morning that he would like to manage Ireland in the future, but | :18:54. | :18:57.
for now is committed to staying at Leeds. I am here now, and I are | :18:57. | :19:01.
committed, 100%. I would regard Leeds United as a very big club, and | :19:01. | :19:08.
very big clubs can spend very big money. We cannot do that, we cannot | :19:08. | :19:16.
spend big money, but we can find a way to make it successful. Cricket | :19:16. | :19:26.
now and Yorkshire are getting on top in their vital County Championship | :19:26. | :19:29.
match at Hove. After bowling Sussex out for 292, Yorkshire made their | :19:29. | :19:33.
way to 246 for four at close of play. Adam Lyth fell just short of | :19:33. | :19:40.
his century andnew signing Kane Williamson is 80 not out. Yorkshire | :19:40. | :19:43.
are currently second in the table behind Durham, but a win could see | :19:44. | :19:48.
them regain top spot. In the other big game between Derbyshire and | :19:48. | :19:50.
Durham, Durham are fighting back in that game. Huddersfield Giants get | :19:50. | :19:56.
the Super League play—offs under way against Wigan at the John Smith's | :19:56. | :19:59.
Stadium tonight. Earlier this month, the Giants got their hands on | :19:59. | :20:03.
silverware for finishing top of the table. But they're now just two wins | :20:03. | :20:07.
away from the Grand Final and from a shot at becoming Super League | :20:07. | :20:13.
champions. And don't forget to join me at 10:25pm tonight for news of | :20:13. | :20:16.
how the Giants got on in that playoff game, plus some of the key | :20:16. | :20:23.
action. We found out last weekend that the city of Tokyo will host the | :20:23. | :20:30.
2020 Olympic Games. So already, we've had our Look North sports team | :20:30. | :20:33.
out and about across our region, to find an emerging candidate who might | :20:33. | :20:37.
end up competing there for us. And we think we've uncovered a real gem | :20:37. | :20:40.
— at Mytholmroyd Weighlifting Club. Paul Ogden's been to meet her. I am | :20:40. | :20:46.
Rebecca Taylor, I am 14 years old, I am the European champion with three | :20:46. | :20:49.
gold medals and this is how it happened. At the European youth | :20:49. | :20:53.
Championships in Lithuania at the weekend, Rebecca took five medals | :20:53. | :20:59.
including three Golds, but rather than sitting around to reflect on | :20:59. | :21:03.
the achievements, she delegated that job to her family, and she is | :21:03. | :21:06.
already preparing for the next step up. I have the European junior is | :21:06. | :21:15.
coming up in ten days. I going to do my best. To try and break my record. | :21:15. | :21:23.
I just like competing. I started off as a sprinter at aged ten and got | :21:23. | :21:30.
tested at a performance Centre, and a coach noticed me and said I should | :21:30. | :21:33.
take up weightlifting, and I have enjoyed it ever since. She has got a | :21:33. | :21:40.
bit of work to do. She is growing up, as a young person, physically | :21:40. | :21:47.
maturing, so 2022 is the one where we're going be looking at medals. | :21:47. | :21:55.
And four—year—old sister Emily has confirmed exclusively to BBC look | :21:55. | :22:00.
North, that she wants to be a champ as well. Watch this space! You would | :22:00. | :22:10.
not want to cross eyebrow of them, would you? # —— you would not want | :22:10. | :22:29.
to cross either of them. One thing we do agree on is that the Harrogate | :22:29. | :22:33.
Flower show is the start of autumn. It opens tomorrow and hordes are | :22:33. | :22:37.
expected to descend on the exhibits. There's so much to see this year, | :22:37. | :22:40.
including how to cook a giant cabbage, wonderful blooms and of | :22:40. | :22:43.
course our own Cathy Killick. You might have thought summer was over, | :22:44. | :22:47.
but not a bit of it. I have been like a pig in muck today, really | :22:47. | :22:55.
enjoying having a good neb about. Here is a selection of my | :22:55. | :22:56.
highlights. Whatever you're looking for, you | :22:56. | :23:21.
will find it here, from show gardens to beautiful blooms, there is | :23:21. | :23:22.
inspiration everywhere. I do think you will get a higher standard | :23:22. | :23:31.
in the UK, so we're lucky to have it in Yorkshire. March and April were | :23:31. | :23:35.
called, but since then we have had some very good growing weather, so | :23:35. | :23:39.
the indications are that we will get some very good displays. The giant | :23:39. | :23:46.
vegetables are always a draw, but this year they have got ambitious | :23:46. | :23:50.
plans for this enormous cabbage. We're going to set a world record | :23:50. | :23:55.
for the number of dishes made from the one cabbage. The flower | :23:55. | :24:05.
arrangers have been given the task of making a theme based on | :24:05. | :24:08.
television sitcoms. That has got to be last of the summer Wine, and this | :24:08. | :24:16.
is, are you being served. Do you remember Miss Brahms? This show | :24:16. | :24:23.
garden is made entirely from recycled material. Each time I do | :24:23. | :24:35.
it, I get more help, but my husband Brian has been brilliant, and my dad | :24:35. | :24:41.
as well. What a pleasure it is to observe what skill can produce. | :24:41. | :24:55.
It is not just the plants that are inspiring. This is the inside of | :24:55. | :25:04.
of the shades of one of the show gardens. Outside, there was an | :25:04. | :25:08.
explosion of gorgeousness. Gates open at 9:30am, then it once through | :25:08. | :25:14.
Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It is well worth a visit. Although I would | :25:14. | :25:21.
say that, wouldn't I? You are a good gardener. I do good yellow | :25:21. | :25:29.
courgettes, and beans and peas. Anything that you can eat. Not so | :25:29. | :25:34.
interested in the pretty stuff. Let me have a look at some pictures that | :25:34. | :25:43.
have come in. That is the Ryburn Valley. And that is a lonely bridge, | :25:43. | :25:50.
in York. Keep the pictures coming in. —— that is the millennium | :25:50. | :25:53.
Bridge. In the short term, I will try to get | :25:53. | :26:09.
tomorrow right, before talking about the next 20 years. It will be messy | :26:09. | :26:14.
tomorrow, courtesy of this week weather front that will give us some | :26:15. | :26:17.
patchy rain. Saturday looking the best day of the | :26:17. | :26:27.
weekend, after a damp start, it will brighten up, but on Sunday, goodness | :26:27. | :26:32.
me, wet and windy weather spreading from the West. We have some coming | :26:32. | :26:38.
in right now. This cloud is bringing rain to the Pennines. It will move | :26:38. | :26:44.
east over the next 24 hours, so all of us will see a wet night. The bulk | :26:44. | :26:48.
of the rain out of the way by the early hours of the morning. Then we | :26:49. | :26:52.
will have lots of low cloud, missed and drizzle. —— mist. | :26:52. | :27:03.
Tomorrow, off to a slow start, cloudy and damp in places. It will | :27:03. | :27:11.
brighten up with some decent, dry, bright spells, but always, the risk | :27:11. | :27:17.
of a few showers. It could bring bring into southern areas. It will | :27:17. | :27:21.
be a bit messy tomorrow. Look at those temperatures, 15 Celsius in | :27:21. | :27:29.
Scarborough. Possibly up to 16 or 17 further south. Saturday the better | :27:29. | :27:33.
day of the weekend, Sunday is wet and windy. There was a row in our | :27:33. | :27:43.
house about whether we can light a fire or not. | :27:43. | :27:45. |
