Welcome to Friday's Look North Tonight. | :00:00. | :00:08.
Fifteen years for starving her son to death. A judge condemns Amanda | :00:08. | :00:11.
Hutton's wicked conduct as Hamzah Khan's father also speaks out. There | :00:11. | :00:21.
will be loads of fathers like me all over, but nobody listens to us. | :00:21. | :00:26.
Nobody will listen to the father and look what has happened. I have a | :00:26. | :00:29.
debt. We will hear much more from Hamzah | :00:29. | :00:31.
Khan's father. Also tonight: Drivers fury — the | :00:31. | :00:36.
closure of York's Lendal Bridge rakes in thousands of pounds in | :00:36. | :00:42.
fines in a matter of weeks. And it seems early to talk about | :00:42. | :00:46.
winning games, but Sheffield United has lost six. | :00:46. | :00:50.
All lit up — Leeds Civic Hall as you've never seen it before. See who | :00:50. | :00:58.
you can spot. It was looking miserable earlier, | :00:58. | :01:02.
but it looks more promising this weekend. Join me for the forecast. | :01:02. | :01:10.
Good evening. A mother from Bradford, who starved her four year | :01:10. | :01:16.
old son to death and concealed his body for nearly two years, | :01:16. | :01:19.
threatened to kill her other children if her eldest son revealed | :01:19. | :01:24.
what had happened. Today Amanda Hutton, was sentenced | :01:24. | :01:27.
to fifteen years in prison, for the manslaughter of Hamzah Kahn and for | :01:27. | :01:30.
neglecting her five other young children. Her eldest son, Tariq | :01:30. | :01:34.
Khan, was given a two year suspended sentence for preventing the burial | :01:34. | :01:40.
of his younger brother. Hamzah was kept in his travel cot in squalid | :01:40. | :01:44.
conditions for twenty—one months. In a moment we'll hear from Hamzah's | :01:44. | :01:48.
father, Aftab Khan, who's given an exclusive interview to the BBC. But | :01:48. | :01:51.
first our Crime Correspondent John Cundy reports on today's sentencing. | :01:51. | :02:02.
Amanda Hutton held in custody overnight after her conviction | :02:02. | :02:07.
yesterday arrived at Bradford Crown Court to face penalties for a cruel | :02:07. | :02:11.
crimes against children. Four—year—old Hamzah Khan staff to | :02:11. | :02:20.
get —— starved to death. 15 years jail for Amanda Hutton for that and | :02:20. | :02:23.
her cruelty to her other five young children. For three years, her | :02:23. | :02:30.
children had been forced to live in unspeakable conditions of squalor in | :02:30. | :02:33.
the family home. Amanda Hutton seemed in passive as she was jailed | :02:33. | :02:42.
for 15 years for manslaughter, preventing his burial and cruelty to | :02:42. | :02:47.
have five other younger children. The prosecuting QC said of the pain | :02:47. | :02:51.
and stress Hamzah suffered must have been dreadful. | :02:51. | :02:56.
Judge Roger Thomas QC told Hutton she had shown terrible failures to | :02:56. | :03:01.
fulfil the most basic responsibilities of a mother. She | :03:01. | :03:05.
had hidden his death for fear of being found out as his killer. She | :03:05. | :03:12.
must be regarded, he said is a real danger to any child she may live | :03:12. | :03:15.
with. The surviving children were found in squalor. How is it | :03:16. | :03:21.
possible, he asked, for a child to be starved to death? | :03:21. | :03:28.
Hutton 's eldest child, described as a mummy 's boy, connived with his | :03:28. | :03:34.
mother to cover up Hamzah 's death. He pleaded guilty to preventing the | :03:34. | :03:40.
lawful aerial of Hamzah. The judge suspended his sentence for two | :03:40. | :03:44.
years. There have been few words of support for Amanda Hutton, but a | :03:44. | :03:50.
family friend spoke briefly. I saw a lot of love from her to her | :03:50. | :03:56.
children, something happened to her. Publication of a review of the roles | :03:57. | :04:03.
of police and child services is now awaited. | :04:03. | :04:06.
Throughout the trial the jury heard how Amanda Hutton was subjected to | :04:06. | :04:10.
domestic violence over many years by Hamzah's father, Aftab Kahn. When he | :04:10. | :04:14.
was arrested in 2008 for assaulting Amanda, he told police that Hamzah | :04:14. | :04:17.
was undernourished and claimed he was going to inform social services. | :04:17. | :04:23.
But no record of the call was ever made. | :04:23. | :04:25.
Well, our correspondent Ed Thomas has an exclusive interview with | :04:25. | :04:31.
Aftab Khan. He joins us now from outside Bradford Crown Court. Ed, | :04:31. | :04:34.
the judge was critical of Aftab's role in the welfare of his children? | :04:34. | :04:46.
Yes, he was. Aftab Khan has a conviction of domestic violence and | :04:47. | :04:49.
today he was criticised for not doing more to help Hamzah. It told | :04:50. | :04:55.
me that he said to police a year earlier to check on Hamzah and check | :04:55. | :05:01.
how malnourished he is. Aftab Khan feels he was not listened to. It was | :05:01. | :05:08.
a very good family that she destroyed. A jewel heritage family. | :05:08. | :05:13.
It has gone down the pan because the police did not listen to me. They | :05:13. | :05:16.
should have done something years ago. If they were aware of the | :05:16. | :05:23.
family, why not check? Why believe her all the time? At first she was a | :05:23. | :05:30.
very good mother, but since her mother died she went completely down | :05:30. | :05:35.
the pan. Heavy drinking. Even I didn't know how heavy she was | :05:35. | :05:40.
drinking. Digital know the house was in such a state? No, I didn't. I | :05:40. | :05:47.
went round once and nobody would open the door. There were so many | :05:47. | :05:51.
flies around the window so I rang her ass why so many flies. —— rang | :05:52. | :06:00.
her up and asked why so many flies? She said to mind your own business. | :06:00. | :06:07.
Can you tell people what you remember of your son. I took that | :06:07. | :06:14.
picture and he was fit and well. How do you think that makes me feel? Did | :06:14. | :06:21.
he deserve that? No he didn't. Why do new go round, why weren't you | :06:21. | :06:33.
knocking on the door? I gave up. Why should I take the persecution of the | :06:33. | :06:36.
police all the time. Domestic violence, domestic violence. Look at | :06:36. | :06:41.
the evidence now that has come out, yeah. I had the police, it was on | :06:41. | :06:49.
the transcripts. Go and check the children, see what state they are | :06:49. | :06:53.
in. They would not believe me. Nobody listens to the mail in this | :06:53. | :06:58.
country. There will be a lot of fathers like me, but nobody listens | :06:58. | :07:04.
to us. Look what has happened, I have a dead son. I have to live with | :07:04. | :07:09.
this for the rest of my life. You guys it will be brushed under the | :07:09. | :07:16.
carpet. Why, because they have messed up big time. Should it only | :07:16. | :07:22.
be Amanda in the dock for what happened? She is the mother. If an | :07:22. | :07:29.
animal has children, that animal looks after the children, the female | :07:29. | :07:33.
does, right? That is all I have to say. Do you accept any | :07:33. | :07:41.
responsibility? I feel guilty that I should have done more, but I was | :07:41. | :07:47.
pushed to one side. How can I do anything if the law does not do | :07:47. | :07:55.
anything? Who am I? Nothing. Aftab Khan clearly unhappy with the | :07:55. | :07:59.
authorities. What has West Yorkshire police had to say? | :07:59. | :08:05.
We have a statement in response to the comments. It said | :08:05. | :08:10.
carry out checks before Hamzah died in Amanda Hutton 's home. At that | :08:10. | :08:15.
time, when officers saw Hamzah, there was no cause for concern. Even | :08:15. | :08:20.
further, the court was told that in the months before Hamzah died, there | :08:20. | :08:24.
was a welfare cheque by a police constable on the home and on the | :08:24. | :08:28.
other siblings inside the house. At that time as well, there was no | :08:28. | :08:33.
cause for alarm. You have also spoken to a friend of | :08:33. | :08:39.
Amanda, what did she have to say? This was a friend who did not want | :08:39. | :08:43.
to be identified or films, but she has been here every day. She has | :08:44. | :08:49.
known Amanda for a number of years and wanted to show support. She said | :08:49. | :08:54.
that she knew a completely different woman and that Amanda Hutton was in | :08:54. | :08:58.
the grip of alcohol and severe depression. She asked one question, | :08:58. | :09:03.
why was more done to help Amanda Hutton? Not just from authorities | :09:03. | :09:09.
and social services, but the family unit around her. | :09:09. | :09:12.
Shaun Kelly is Head of Safeguarding at the charity Action for Children. | :09:12. | :09:16.
And earlier I asked him whether there was a danger of abuse going | :09:17. | :09:19.
unreported because people were afraid of getting it wrong. | :09:19. | :09:28.
What we know from research with social workers, police and other | :09:28. | :09:31.
professionals is that professionals are suing neglect on a regular basis | :09:31. | :09:40.
and occasionally feel unable to act. They feel that the | :09:40. | :09:43.
other agencies are too high or concerned that they don't fully | :09:43. | :09:46.
understand what services might be available. Occasionally this leaves | :09:46. | :09:52.
them so worried about taking the wrong action that they sometimes | :09:52. | :09:57.
take no action. We had from the father he said he | :09:57. | :10:01.
repeatedly asked police and social services to check on the children | :10:01. | :10:05.
but no one listened to him. The judge criticised his lack of action. | :10:05. | :10:12.
That shows it is complicated. Do you have some sympathy with the | :10:12. | :10:18.
authorities, who do you believe? We know there are a lot of complexities | :10:18. | :10:22.
and issues around neglect. We know that domestic violence, mental | :10:22. | :10:27.
health, drug and alcohol abuse can be linked to neglect and other forms | :10:27. | :10:32.
of abuse. We need to ensure that which I understand and professionals | :10:32. | :10:35.
understand the experience of children's in this family. | :10:35. | :10:44.
The pressure is growing on mandatory referrals of child abuse. What is | :10:44. | :10:49.
your view on that? Action for children will be in favour of | :10:49. | :10:54.
anything that makes children safer. In other countries where mandatory | :10:54. | :10:59.
reporting exist, it does not offer more safeguarding and thresholds are | :10:59. | :11:04.
as high in those countries and —— as in this country. | :11:04. | :11:06.
Later on Look North: More controversy over High Speed Two. | :11:06. | :11:09.
Arguments in Sheffield as to whether Meadowhall or the city centre should | :11:09. | :11:11.
be the station's location. jailed for eighteen months and | :11:11. | :11:21.
sacked by his club after he was found guilty of punching two men in | :11:21. | :11:24.
separate nightclub attacks in Sheffield. Leeds Crown Court heard | :11:24. | :11:27.
that Sheffield Wednesday striker Gary Madine, who's twenty three, | :11:27. | :11:30.
also has a previous conviction for a similar attack. Danny Carpenter | :11:31. | :11:42.
reports. Goals, money, prestige. Gary lived | :11:42. | :11:47.
the dream. According to his own lawyer, it was a light while of | :11:47. | :11:54.
girls, booze and fast cars. The weakness. Drink and a violent temper | :11:54. | :11:59.
proved his undoing. And nightclub assault in February left a man | :11:59. | :12:04.
unconscious. Just one month later he did it again. Another nightclub, | :12:04. | :12:09.
another assault. And he had done it before at his previous club, | :12:09. | :12:15.
Carlisle United. He had been sentenced to community service order | :12:15. | :12:19.
for another nightclub assault. Today he was jailed for 18 months. The | :12:19. | :12:24.
judge told him he would not take account of his so—called role model | :12:24. | :12:29.
status. He said that was an unrealistic and unfair burden on | :12:29. | :12:34.
young men from relatively humble backgrounds who, through their | :12:34. | :12:37.
talents, were thrust into the public view. At the same time, the fact | :12:37. | :12:41.
that he was a footballer and perhaps seen as having more to lose was also | :12:41. | :12:47.
simply neither here nor there. Perhaps the most telling next change | :12:47. | :12:51.
of this hearing came after the sentence was announced. Gary 's | :12:51. | :12:57.
lawyer told the judge that a footballer who had been earning | :12:57. | :13:01.
£5,000 per week could not afford to pay costs or compensation. The | :13:01. | :13:06.
family home is on the market, the lease car has gone back and he will | :13:06. | :13:10.
come out of jail without a single asset to his name. | :13:10. | :13:14.
In other news now, and a 25—year—old nursery worker has pleaded not | :13:14. | :13:17.
guilty to the manslaughter of a three—year—old girl who died at a | :13:17. | :13:20.
playground in York. Lydia Bishop died there when she became entangled | :13:20. | :13:24.
in a rope in September last year. Sophee Redhead is jointly charged | :13:24. | :13:27.
with York Council, which faces two charges of breaching health and | :13:27. | :13:31.
safety laws, which it also denies. Their trial is due to take place in | :13:31. | :13:41.
January. A pensioner who was given sanctuary | :13:41. | :13:44.
at a West Yorkshire school at the start of the second world war has | :13:44. | :13:48.
made an emotional return after more than seventy years. John Karlik, who | :13:48. | :13:51.
now lives in Australia, spent seven years at Fulneck School in Pudsey | :13:51. | :13:55.
after he managed to escape on the last Kinder Transport train allowed | :13:55. | :13:58.
out of Czechoslovakia in 1939. The trains were used by Jewish children | :13:58. | :14:01.
who were permitted to travel to England to escape the Nazi regime, | :14:01. | :14:09.
leaving their families behind them. My parents were killed, well, my | :14:09. | :14:17.
father was and then my mother in the concentration camp during the war. | :14:17. | :14:22.
If I had stayed in Czechoslovakia, something horrible would have | :14:22. | :14:26.
happened to me. Next tonight, more debate over the | :14:26. | :14:29.
proposed High Speed Two Rail line. Sheffield City Council have brought | :14:29. | :14:33.
out a report in which they say the station should be closer to the city | :14:33. | :14:35.
centre. They say more jobs would be created | :14:35. | :14:39.
if it were in the city, not out at Meadowhall. Here's Tom Ingall | :14:39. | :14:42.
Closing one of York's bridges to motorists could | :14:42. | :14:47.
Sheffield Ston Valley where road, rail and canal meet. It is also | :14:47. | :14:54.
where the HS2 station is to be built. The council want the station | :14:54. | :15:07.
closer to them. In their plans, services with snaking from the east, | :15:07. | :15:10.
stop here and curve through tunnels heading northward to regain the | :15:10. | :15:14.
roots that the government would like. They are so sure of their case | :15:14. | :15:19.
they have commissioned to independent reports. They would | :15:19. | :15:24.
appear to show that if you put the station at Meadowhall, you might | :15:24. | :15:28.
create 3500 jobs. Here at Victoria, that figure could be as high as 9500 | :15:28. | :15:36.
jobs. City centres attract higher end | :15:36. | :15:45.
occupiers. The kind of companies that will benefit most from HS2 and | :15:45. | :15:51.
group around station locations. Our section of high—speed two is | :15:51. | :16:01.
expected to open in 2015. The total price is given as £50 billion. | :16:01. | :16:03.
Moving it away from the Don Valley will also take it further away from | :16:03. | :16:08.
Rotherham and Barnsley. The balance of economics to the whole region has | :16:08. | :16:14.
to be right. Sheffield has every right to put | :16:14. | :16:18.
that case. We feel that Meadowhall is the best option for the whole of | :16:18. | :16:22.
the region. The HS2 company are still discussing | :16:22. | :16:24.
the exact route. They told us: changes would have implication to | :16:24. | :16:40.
the budget and journey times. It has cost £3000 to draw up the report. | :16:40. | :16:45.
For the city council, it is a stand worth taking and ultimately it could | :16:45. | :16:48.
define the landscape of Sheffield for generations. | :16:48. | :16:54.
That would evoke some fond memories if Victoria Station was brought back | :16:54. | :16:58.
into existence. It would indeed. I can't even | :16:58. | :17:02.
imagine, it is such a long way away. Closing one of York's bridges to | :17:02. | :17:05.
motorists could make the council hundreds of thousands of pounds in | :17:05. | :17:08.
fines in just a few weeks. Nearly two thousand cars have crossed | :17:08. | :17:11.
Lendal Bridge every week since it was closed to drivers at the end of | :17:11. | :17:15.
August. Each has been clocked by number plate recognition cameras and | :17:15. | :17:19.
sent a sixty pound fine. It's angered many motorists, who say they | :17:19. | :17:22.
didn't know they were at fault, though the council insists the | :17:22. | :17:25.
closure is working well. Here's Cathy Killick. | :17:25. | :17:33.
It is one of the classic routes into York. Over the river on Lendal | :17:33. | :17:39.
Bridge. The bridge is particularly pretty with lovely views of the | :17:39. | :17:44.
river, but it is also one of only three bridges in the city centre and | :17:44. | :17:51.
therefore an important thoroughfare. When the council decided on a | :17:51. | :17:54.
six—month trial to close the bridge, it was controversial. Drivers | :17:54. | :17:59.
predicted traffic chaos and businesses worried about a lack of | :17:59. | :18:03.
trade. The immediate impact has been peace and quiet. But it has come at | :18:03. | :18:10.
a price. Figures show thousands of motorists have been fined 30 or £60 | :18:10. | :18:15.
for crossing the bridge. Many had no idea they did anything wrong. Do you | :18:15. | :18:20.
know you should not be on the bridge? No, I have not seen any | :18:20. | :18:26.
signs. In fact, I haven't a clue where I'm going. Just following the | :18:26. | :18:35.
sat mouse. We only saw restricted access when we were coming. Didn't | :18:35. | :18:43.
you think that would apply? We didn't know, we were just following | :18:43. | :18:53.
the sat mouse. You know all about it? No worries. | :18:53. | :19:01.
There are signs everywhere. We are looking at Dingwall signs in, but | :19:01. | :19:04.
they are there and visible for to see. | :19:04. | :19:11.
These are some of the 60 signs warning motorists. Plenty clear | :19:11. | :19:15.
enough says the council, and they deny that the fines are a money | :19:15. | :19:18.
spinner. Motorists that have been spine —— find feel stung. | :19:18. | :19:28.
I have lived in York for 14 years and I don't recall anything as | :19:28. | :19:34.
controversial as this discussion. It's controversial because there are | :19:34. | :19:38.
a lot of signs, you can't deny that. Perhaps on the road you don't notice | :19:38. | :19:47.
of signs. Let's move on. Now it's not been a good start to | :19:47. | :19:51.
the season for Sheffield United. No, after nine games they're bottom of | :19:51. | :19:54.
league one with just one win to their name. Tonight they take on | :19:54. | :19:59.
Crawley and Tanya's there. It seems early to talk about must | :19:59. | :20:04.
win games, but it has that feel about it because Sheffield United | :20:04. | :20:09.
bottom of the table. Manager admits that does not make good reading. | :20:09. | :20:16.
Hopefully they can give us a level of trust and belief in terms of what | :20:16. | :20:20.
they are doing. Fans have been really positive. They have | :20:20. | :20:26.
understood that it won't happen overnight and we are trying to do | :20:26. | :20:34.
something. With me is James Shields who covers | :20:34. | :20:38.
the club for the paper. Is this a must win game? | :20:38. | :20:47.
When you are on this type of run, every game is a must win game. We | :20:47. | :20:50.
are not aware of any ultimatums, but this is a results based business and | :20:50. | :20:55.
he's pressure to deliver. He was hinting that they are getting | :20:55. | :21:00.
better, but they can't score goals. That is the key. Goal—scoring is | :21:00. | :21:05.
poor, but in his defence, the last couple of games against two good | :21:05. | :21:10.
teams, there have been genuine signs of improvement. For the first time | :21:10. | :21:15.
this season, rather than the first game at home when they won 2—1 on a | :21:15. | :21:21.
Friday night, for the first time since then they have looked like | :21:21. | :21:26.
they are going to be scoring. They looked like a team. What to think | :21:26. | :21:34.
the fans will be like tonight? I think there will be nervous. There | :21:34. | :21:40.
is pressure on the team and the fans. It is a club that is genuinely | :21:40. | :21:48.
used to winning things. This used to challenging and expecting to | :21:48. | :21:52.
challenge for promotion. A lot of it depends on how the game goes. I am | :21:52. | :21:58.
guessing you want a quiet weekend, so you will definitely want to win, | :21:58. | :22:06.
won't you? Absolutely. There is full match coverage on BBC radio | :22:06. | :22:10.
Sheffield. Fingers crossed indeed. | :22:10. | :22:14.
Tonight is Light Night in Leeds city centre. It's part of a special | :22:14. | :22:17.
celebration of arts and many public buildings, museums and | :22:17. | :22:21.
galleries opened up until late. One of the highlights is the special | :22:21. | :22:24.
lighting up of Leeds Civic Hall, with twelve hundred Leeds folk from | :22:24. | :22:27.
all walks of life being projected onto the side of the building. Ian | :22:27. | :22:41.
White is there for us now. I bet you have never seen it looked | :22:41. | :22:45.
like that and four. It is just about dark enough to get a feeling of what | :22:45. | :22:49.
it will look like. Let me show you last night. This is what it looked | :22:49. | :22:53.
like. Really spectacular in the dark. The man behind it is Rob Vale. | :22:53. | :23:02.
This is spectacular. Give it another 15 minutes or so and it will come | :23:03. | :23:10.
alive. This is what it is all about, isn't it? Absolutely. Five | :23:10. | :23:16.
generations of clockmakers and we wanted to bring that up to date. | :23:16. | :23:20.
Over the summer we have had thousands of people and put them all | :23:20. | :23:25.
together into this huge mechanical clock. Every quarter hour, this | :23:25. | :23:30.
thing comes alive with people from Leeds. 80—year—olds line dancing and | :23:30. | :23:39.
all sorts. Skaters, solicitors, gardeners, people from the street, | :23:39. | :23:45.
it has been fantastic. There are a couple of people I know, some look | :23:45. | :23:56.
North presenters. Yes, we were lucky enough to go in the studio. It has | :23:56. | :24:05.
been great. At the moment we are waiting for the quarter hour, so | :24:05. | :24:10.
this is all moving. Just further down there is a winding mechanism | :24:10. | :24:14.
allowing people to control the cogs and gears. The winding mechanism | :24:14. | :24:20.
just over here. Before we go back to the studio, let's have a quick turn | :24:21. | :24:29.
of the car. Is it good? If you want to come down, what do people have to | :24:29. | :24:35.
do? Just come down to the square. It really gets going at 7:30pm. | :24:35. | :24:43.
Well worth a visit. Thank you very much. Quite scary to | :24:43. | :24:49.
see people from look North appearing on the Civic Hall. | :24:49. | :24:55.
I have a compare —— confession, I didn't pay attention to your | :24:55. | :24:58.
forecast yesterday and then went for a walk with the dogs at 9am. Guess | :24:58. | :25:02.
what happened. That downpour call my golf off as | :25:02. | :25:09.
well. Nice to have you in on a Friday as | :25:09. | :25:14.
well. Let's have a look at some pictures | :25:14. | :25:16.
over the last couple of hours. Keep the pictures coming in. E—mail | :25:16. | :25:38.
or tweet me. Not a bad weekend to come, partly cloudy and some | :25:38. | :25:44.
sunshine. One or two showers across the Pennines and a little light rain | :25:44. | :25:49.
late on Sunday. Effectively we are looking at high pressure, which | :25:49. | :25:53.
means generally find conditions. There are a number of sharp showers, | :25:53. | :25:56.
especially Krantz eastern parts of the region. What will happen is the | :25:56. | :26:04.
showers fizzle out and we will see clear spells develop. A fresh wind | :26:04. | :26:12.
will ease later. 13 Celsius the high. The sun will rise in the | :26:12. | :26:18.
morning at 7:15am. Your next high water time at 5am. Saturday will be | :26:18. | :26:24.
bright with some sunshine, but thicker cloud further west. One or | :26:24. | :26:31.
two light showers. Very much the exception to the rule. Basically a | :26:31. | :26:35.
fine day. The best of the weather will be towards the coast. A lovely | :26:35. | :26:41.
weekend for our favoured coastline. 17 degrees in Scarborough. Further | :26:41. | :26:48.
west will see highs of 15 Celsius. Sunday, some sunshine and then | :26:48. | :26:56.
clouding over. Next week looks mostly fine and settled. Quite warm | :26:56. | :26:59.
for this time of the year. That is the forecast. | :26:59. | :27:05.
We must mention Harry is doing the Huddersfield half marathon. If you | :27:05. | :27:09.
are going, please give him some support. | :27:09. | :27:15.
We will leave you with shots of the Civic Hall. Good night. | :27:15. | :27:15. |
