Welcome to Friday's Look North. Tonight: | :00:00. | :00:10.
A plea for peace. Religious faiths and police in Bradford unite ahead | :00:10. | :00:13.
of a planned English Defence League protest this weekend. | :00:13. | :00:15.
Also tonight: Pooling their resources. The workers with | :00:15. | :00:17.
disabilities sinking their Remploy redundancy money into a new company. | :00:17. | :00:32.
I have invested five grand in this business. It will not feel. It will | :00:32. | :00:36.
succeed! The ultimate pottery collection. | :00:36. | :00:41.
4,000 pots hoarded in a small terraced house now on public | :00:41. | :00:43.
display. And in sport, Sheffield United have | :00:43. | :00:46.
this evening sacked manager, David Weir. In his ten league games in | :00:46. | :00:49.
charge, his side managed just one win. | :00:49. | :00:56.
It has been a largely cloudy day. You can see the cloud in Sheffield. | :00:56. | :01:00.
There was a breeze. Will it improve for the weekend? I am back later | :01:00. | :01:12.
with the full forecast. Good evening and welcome to the | :01:12. | :01:13.
programme. David Weir later. Hundreds of police | :01:13. | :01:25.
officers will be on the streets of Bradford tomorrow as members of the | :01:25. | :01:26.
far right English Defence League descend on the city. Their protest | :01:26. | :01:30.
is going ahead as planned, despite the resignation earlier this week of | :01:30. | :01:35.
the leader Tommy Robinson. Today in a move to reassure worried members | :01:35. | :01:39.
of the Muslim community every mosque in the city had a visit from a | :01:39. | :01:42.
senior police officer and council official. Our reporter is in | :01:42. | :01:47.
Bradford city centre for us now. What do we know about tomorrow's | :01:47. | :01:52.
police operation? Well, it is a pleasant evening here | :01:52. | :02:01.
in Bradford. Tomorrow, there will be hundreds of police officers here. A | :02:01. | :02:11.
significant number will police this event. The EDL website say they plan | :02:11. | :02:16.
to go ahead with the protest and say it will be peaceful and they have | :02:16. | :02:21.
the right to be here. Bees weather seems the last time the | :02:21. | :02:27.
EDL came to Bradford. A major police operation kept things under control. | :02:27. | :02:32.
Two years on, the city is bracing itself for another protest. They | :02:32. | :02:35.
will gather in the city centre in the morning. A significant number of | :02:35. | :02:43.
police will be present. Many bussed in from other parts of the UK. | :02:43. | :02:49.
Earlier this week, Tony Robinson stood down giving this event and air | :02:49. | :03:05.
of unpredictability. The people of Bradford are equipped to deal with | :03:05. | :03:08.
their challenges. The EDL bring nothing but Tait and division. | :03:08. | :03:18.
Police visited mosques during Friday prayers. We had a protest here in | :03:18. | :03:32.
2010. The leader of the EDL did not sure up at that event. We are | :03:32. | :03:38.
looking at all different aspects of the dynamics. It could be different | :03:38. | :03:43.
to other events. We are prepared for all eventualities. Every mosque in | :03:43. | :03:52.
Bradford had a visit from a senior police officer and council official. | :03:52. | :03:55.
They made it clear the centre of Bradford would not become a no—go | :03:55. | :03:58.
zone for people going about their everyday business. It is helpful for | :03:58. | :04:06.
the police to come out to communities to reassure people. I | :04:06. | :04:11.
think people are feeling more comfortable. The police have assured | :04:11. | :04:22.
us the communities will be safe. I would ask Muslim people not to | :04:22. | :04:31.
react. The leader of Bradford Council has written to the | :04:31. | :04:34.
government, requesting more powers to stop protests like the one | :04:34. | :04:40.
tomorrow from happening. Bradford is open for business and people should | :04:40. | :04:44.
not be put off coming to the city, that is the message from the | :04:44. | :04:51.
council. Religious leaders from all sorts of faiths have been here this | :04:51. | :04:58.
evening, having prayers and wanting to put out the message that peace is | :04:58. | :05:02.
so important in the city which has had more than its fair share of | :05:02. | :05:09.
troubles in the past. They have been putting ribbons on trees and having | :05:09. | :05:14.
silent prayers. The message is, come to Bradford tomorrow. There will be | :05:14. | :05:19.
a heavy police presence and you should be safe. | :05:19. | :05:21.
A group of disabled workers from West Yorkshire who lost their jobs | :05:21. | :05:24.
have pooled their redundancy money and set up a new company. They all | :05:24. | :05:28.
used to work for Remploy, which offered employment for disabled | :05:28. | :05:31.
people. But the Government has been closing down the factories as they | :05:31. | :05:42.
were costing too much to run. Five years ago, there were 83 Remploy | :05:42. | :05:45.
factories employing 3,500 people across the country. By the end of | :05:45. | :05:49.
this year, all but 12 will have been closed. While the closure programme | :05:49. | :05:52.
has been running, the Government says it has helped 50,000 disabled | :05:52. | :05:55.
people find jobs since 2010. Our reporter has been along to the | :05:55. | :06:00.
launch of the new factory in Leeds. It was just last year that Stephen | :06:00. | :06:11.
feared being left on the scrapheap. The government said the factories | :06:11. | :06:14.
were true costly and head away disabled workers. His feelings are | :06:14. | :06:24.
simple. Sick and horrible. My world crashed on the. Goal was not an | :06:24. | :06:36.
option. They pooled their redundancy money and set up their own company. | :06:36. | :06:44.
This has given us a chance to possibly prove people wrong. I'm | :06:44. | :06:50.
excited to be here. If we didn't have this, we would be on the dole. | :06:50. | :06:56.
I have invested five grand in this. It will not feel. We will succeed. | :06:56. | :07:07.
As well as being the workers, they are now also the owners. They want | :07:07. | :07:17.
to make a profit, but with a purpose. Everything we make us back | :07:17. | :07:26.
into the business. It is about developing people with disabilities. | :07:26. | :07:31.
Because of the way this organisation has set up, interest is not just | :07:31. | :07:34.
been from businesses but from politicians. It is a genuine | :07:34. | :07:40.
cooperative that works. People with disabilities can make a massive | :07:40. | :07:46.
contribution and that can win contracts and beat the private | :07:46. | :07:50.
sector. While accepting it will be tough, that is exactly what they are | :07:51. | :07:55.
aiming to do. Rome was not built in a day. This company will not be | :07:55. | :08:04.
built in a day. It will take time. I am happy that I am doing this. Happy | :08:04. | :08:10.
to that the orders are already coming in. For a company they both | :08:10. | :08:18.
value and all. We wish them the very best of luck. | :08:18. | :08:23.
Later on Look North: we are live at Bramall Lane. | :08:23. | :08:26.
Plus plans to reduce overcrowding on one of Yorkshire's busiest railway | :08:26. | :08:29.
lines, but will the cash be available? | :08:29. | :08:32.
A Bradford woman has been jailed for 21 months for her part in | :08:32. | :08:35.
trafficking a 20—year—old Slovakian victim who was kidnapped from her | :08:35. | :08:38.
home country and sexually abused and imprisoned in Yorkshire and | :08:38. | :08:46.
Lancashire. Petra Zudzova, who is 25, was sentenced at Preston Crown | :08:46. | :08:50.
Court today. Earlier this week, three men involved in what was | :08:50. | :08:54.
called a case of modern day slavery were jailed for a total of 31 years. | :08:54. | :08:58.
South Yorkshire Police have named a man who died after he was found | :08:58. | :09:01.
injured in Sheffield city centre. 45—year—old Calvin Clarke, was found | :09:01. | :09:05.
by a member of the public near to Snig Hill Police Station at around | :09:05. | :09:10.
5pm on 27 September. He was taken to the Northern General | :09:10. | :09:17.
revealed that Mr Clarke died of a stab wound. | :09:17. | :09:19.
Part of Scarborough town centre was sealed off and shops evacuated today | :09:19. | :09:24.
after a security alert. Bomb disposal teams were called in after | :09:24. | :09:28.
an abandoned pram with wires coming out of it, was reported to police in | :09:28. | :09:31.
Westborough at around 9am this morning. A 100 metre cordon was put | :09:31. | :09:42.
in place and a controlled explosion was carried out. North Yorkshire | :09:42. | :09:45.
Police say the evacuation had been a precaution and they were confident | :09:45. | :09:48.
the item had not been an explosive device. | :09:48. | :09:53.
Around 20 firefighters have been tackling a fire at a row of shops on | :09:53. | :09:57.
Bank Street in Mexborough. South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service | :09:57. | :10:00.
say crews were called, after reports of a fire in a roof space above two | :10:00. | :10:04.
shops at around 2pm this afternoon. A nearby pub had to be evacuated, | :10:04. | :10:07.
but no—one was hurt. An investigation into how the fire | :10:07. | :10:10.
began is now underway. South Yorkshire Police say there has | :10:10. | :10:13.
been a 30% increase in valuables being stolen from cars in Barnsley. | :10:13. | :10:21.
Figures comparing April to August this year, with the same time last | :10:21. | :10:25.
year, show a rise of 4% across the whole of South Yorkshire. While that | :10:25. | :10:28.
type of crime has fallen in Doncaster, in Barnsley it is up by | :10:28. | :10:38.
almost a third. We have sporadic hotspots. We had a | :10:38. | :10:50.
number of incidents of car theft in ferns parole last night. Lock your | :10:50. | :10:54.
doors, lock your windows and hide your valuables. Officers say it is | :10:54. | :10:58.
important people lock things like sat—navs out of sight. | :10:58. | :11:01.
Firefighters across Yorkshire will go on strike again a week tomorrow. | :11:01. | :11:04.
Members of the Fire Brigades Union across England and Wales will walk | :11:04. | :11:07.
out for five hours during the evening. It is all part of a dispute | :11:07. | :11:11.
about planned changes to their pensions. A four hour walk—out was | :11:11. | :11:13.
held last month. A scheme has been launched today to | :11:13. | :11:16.
dramatically reduce overcrowding on one of Yorkshire's busiest railway | :11:16. | :11:19.
lines. North Yorkshire County Council and Metro have drawn up | :11:19. | :11:22.
plans to electrify the Leeds, Harrogate and York route, and to | :11:22. | :11:25.
double the number of services. But more than £90 million of Government | :11:25. | :11:34.
funds will be needed. Phenomenal growth during a | :11:34. | :11:39.
recession. 1 million extra passengers in five years. Is now one | :11:39. | :11:43.
of the most overcrowded in northern England. But there is a plan. | :11:44. | :11:51.
Electrify the root. That will mean faster, newer trains running more | :11:51. | :11:59.
frequently. The MP for Harrowgate is backing the proposals. Today, they | :11:59. | :12:04.
called for £93 million of government funds. We are looking for a 15 | :12:04. | :12:12.
minute frequency. Longer trains with four carriages. Faster trains as | :12:12. | :12:17.
well. The whole thing will be more reliable and comfortable. The South | :12:18. | :12:29.
of England has seen billions spent on rail infrastructure in recent | :12:29. | :12:32.
years. But last night the Prime Minister suggested there might funds | :12:32. | :12:37.
available for additional projects in Yorkshire. We will spend three times | :12:37. | :12:49.
more on railway projects than on HS2. Electrification of the | :12:49. | :13:01.
trans—Pennine route is vital. I think this should be electrified. It | :13:01. | :13:12.
is overcrowded. It is always full. We were told, if you buy a ticket | :13:12. | :13:20.
you are not guaranteed a seat. If £93 million can be fun —— can be | :13:20. | :13:30.
found, then the proposals could go ahead. And by then there could be | :13:30. | :13:40.
another 1 million extra passengers. Before 7pm, cup glory. We see the | :13:40. | :13:43.
magnificent Rugby League World Cup back in Yorkshire more than 40 years | :13:43. | :13:48.
after being nicked in Bradford. And a hoarder extraordinaire. The | :13:48. | :13:52.
collector who filled his home with every pot imaginable. | :13:52. | :14:05.
He has had just 13 games in charge, but he has won only two of them. | :14:05. | :14:10.
David Weir's time in charge of Sheffield United has been short and | :14:10. | :14:14.
unsuccessful. At lunchtime, he attended the pre—match press | :14:14. | :14:16.
conference ahead of Sunday's game at Coventry. A few hours later, news | :14:16. | :14:20.
came through that he had been sacked. | :14:20. | :14:28.
The news tonight can only have come as a big shock to David Weir | :14:28. | :14:34.
himself. This was the scene at the training ground this morning. He | :14:34. | :14:38.
took the session as normal and spoke to reporters after words. For the | :14:38. | :14:45.
last time as the boss of the blades. Appointed in June, David Weir has | :14:45. | :14:50.
spent most of his short tenure being reminded of the pressure he was | :14:50. | :14:58.
under two correctly feel years. They are left in the relegation zone. He | :14:59. | :15:10.
had begun to look rather tired of constantly being asked to publicly | :15:10. | :15:19.
defend himself. I was disappointed. The players were deep —— the players | :15:19. | :15:26.
were disappointed. It is embarrassing to have had this run of | :15:26. | :15:34.
results. Have you had any feedback from the hierarchy tonight you Mac | :15:34. | :15:39.
no. Do you resign? No. The new owners to control last | :15:39. | :16:04.
month. By which time, David Weir had already begun to feel badly. The | :16:04. | :16:15.
Saudi prince has stated the aim of getting them back into the Premier | :16:15. | :16:17.
League as quickly as possible. Our reporter is outside Bramhall | :16:18. | :16:21.
Lane now. What has the club had to say? | :16:21. | :16:27.
Well, David Weir had been in charge of very short length of time. This | :16:27. | :16:36.
was his first job. Tonight he has had a bitter lesson about the ups | :16:36. | :16:39.
and downs of running a football club. A statement says they have | :16:39. | :16:45.
relieved David Weir and his assistant. Their former captain will | :16:45. | :16:52.
take interim charge for the game this weekend. The club say they want | :16:52. | :16:56.
to appoint a permanent replacement as quickly as possible. While ago, I | :16:56. | :17:02.
caught up with some fans and asked what they thought. You cannot always | :17:03. | :17:09.
blame the manager. The need to invest. Combine both Sheffield | :17:09. | :17:17.
teams. They have played good football at times. But results are | :17:17. | :17:27.
important. They were not playing as well, but now they have a new | :17:27. | :17:31.
manager they might play better than they used to. The club at that they | :17:31. | :17:37.
wish David all the best. None of us want to be in this position. We can | :17:37. | :17:51.
only speculate about the new decision. | :17:51. | :18:07.
This is the rather magnificent Rugby League World Cup. The 2013 | :18:07. | :18:19.
tournament gets underway in just a couple of weeks time with England | :18:19. | :18:22.
kicking it off against Australia. Before that, the trophy is going on | :18:22. | :18:26.
display at the Midland Hotel in Bradford. Why is that newsworthy? | :18:26. | :18:29.
Well, back in 1970, it was stolen from there. To pick up the tale, I | :18:29. | :18:33.
am joined by the Rugby Football League's historian Tony Collins. | :18:33. | :18:37.
It was the day after Australia one the game in 1970. They had a | :18:37. | :18:45.
celebration. Then the trophy disappeared. By the time they were | :18:46. | :18:51.
on their way back, no one knew where it was. It is a great sporting | :18:51. | :19:02.
mystery. 20 years later, someone saw something shiny in a ditch. | :19:02. | :19:14.
It was reunited in 1999. Harry, you were there. Was it like? | :19:14. | :19:24.
It was bizarre. It was a wonderful moment. You can see how serious they | :19:24. | :19:30.
were. We were delighted to get it back. | :19:30. | :19:36.
It is not small. You wonder what someone did with it? | :19:36. | :19:41.
It is not an easy thing to get rid of because it is distinctive. I | :19:41. | :19:55.
guess they just threw it away. Are they going to look after it a | :19:55. | :20:01.
bit more carefully this time? It will definitely be returned to | :20:01. | :20:07.
its rightful owners. Who do you think will be picking | :20:07. | :20:12.
this up at the end of it? I hope it will be Kevin Tsing Field. | :20:12. | :20:27.
Williams will be playing at Headingley on 8th of November. It | :20:27. | :20:34.
will be fantastic, whether it is the big teams like Australia or USA or | :20:34. | :20:40.
Italy, it will be fantastic for anyone. You will have a great time | :20:40. | :20:51.
if you go to watch it. Hopefully the trophy will not disappear again! | :20:51. | :20:59.
Can you believe there are six security guards in the studio for | :20:59. | :21:05.
that? ! Are you a collector? And do you | :21:05. | :21:10.
secretly hope your collection will turn out to be worth a fortune? If | :21:10. | :21:14.
so, this next report will give you a warm glow. You may not have heard of | :21:14. | :21:18.
William Ismay, but his collection is the star of a new artwork at the | :21:18. | :21:34.
Hepworth Wakefield. Collected over a lifetime, this | :21:34. | :21:42.
pottery has been made by Britain's best ceramic artists of the last | :21:42. | :21:44.
century. Might look humble, but is worth thousands. The collector | :21:44. | :21:55.
had an unerring eye and a love of ceramics. He was a lowly paid | :21:55. | :22:08.
librarian. This very ordinary house housed him and his collection of | :22:08. | :22:15.
3500 pop is. Inside, every surface of every room was crammed with pots. | :22:15. | :22:26.
More of his collection was stored above the bath. There was hardly any | :22:26. | :22:32.
room to get into the house because it was a passageway or hallway and | :22:32. | :22:42.
it was piled high with boxes. I squeezed past two go into the | :22:42. | :22:48.
kitchen. I have never seen so many ports in one kitchen. There was | :22:48. | :22:53.
literally one dinner plate's worth of space at one end of the table | :22:53. | :22:57.
which was clear. That was where he ate. This is how the gallery have | :22:57. | :23:07.
chosen to display the collection. Wooden floorboards mark out his | :23:07. | :23:12.
house. A fifth of his collection is displayed. There were some elegant | :23:12. | :23:26.
stages. They added the white appliances. Then we thought it would | :23:26. | :23:34.
be bonkers with the pots. We were right! The finished artwork makes | :23:34. | :23:46.
you wonder why the pots would be valued more than the gadgets. Who is | :23:46. | :23:56.
to say which is the more artful? I had an embarrassing collection | :23:56. | :24:02.
when I was younger. I used to collect robbers, trawls and ceramic | :24:02. | :24:16.
pigs. I used to collect stamps. Now I | :24:16. | :24:27.
collect clothes and handbags! We have some wet weather for | :24:27. | :24:41.
Saturday and Sunday. This was taken yesterday near Keighley. It looks | :24:41. | :24:51.
like snow in Scarborough, but it is actually the form from crashing | :24:51. | :24:52.
waves. No snow just yet! Tomorrow, lot of cloud around. The cloud will | :24:52. | :25:03.
produce outbreaks of light rain and drizzle. Some uncertainty over the | :25:03. | :25:07.
timings of the forecast. At the moment, it looks like tomorrow | :25:07. | :25:11.
evening is when we will get their heaviest of the rain. It is courtesy | :25:11. | :25:17.
of this area of low pressure. It is quite breezy out there. That will | :25:17. | :25:21.
gradually relaxed through the course of the weekend. We have had some | :25:21. | :25:25.
