Commonwealth Summit in Sri Lanka. That is all from the BBC News at | :00:00. | :00:00.
Welcome to Friday's Look North. Tonight: Could fracking be on its | :00:00. | :00:10.
way? The controversial method of extracting shale gas from rock could | :00:11. | :00:14.
soon be a reality in two parts of our region. | :00:15. | :00:20.
I understand why people are concerned about it. I believed | :00:21. | :00:23.
everything I read about it, I would be concerned as well. But it is a | :00:24. | :00:29.
well understood process. Also tonight: Masking the danger? | :00:30. | :00:34.
The World War II memorabilia it's claimed contain deadly asbestos, | :00:35. | :00:38.
particularly harmful to children. And it's Children in Need night! | :00:39. | :00:44.
We're live from the Media Museum for a fun`packed evening of fundraising | :00:45. | :00:52.
and entertainment. Yes, last year you managed to raise | :00:53. | :00:54.
an amazing ?1.5 Good evening and welcome to Look | :00:55. | :01:14.
North. BBC Look North can exclusively reveal that the | :01:15. | :01:16.
controversial process of fracking ` the extraction of shale gas from | :01:17. | :01:20.
rock ` could soon be a reality here in our region. An energy company is | :01:21. | :01:24.
planning on putting in two planning applications over the next 12 | :01:25. | :01:27.
months, one in Bawtry and the other near York. | :01:28. | :01:31.
The industry says it could help slow down the rise in energy prices. | :01:32. | :01:34.
However, campaigners say it can contaminate ground water and even | :01:35. | :01:38.
cause small earthquakes. In a moment, we'll hear from an energy | :01:39. | :01:41.
expert but first our Business Correspondent Danni Hewson has been | :01:42. | :01:44.
to meet Dart Energy, the company behind the proposals. | :01:45. | :01:55.
Up until now, Dart Energy had a relatively low`profile in our | :01:56. | :01:59.
region. The main focus of its operations in the UK has been here | :02:00. | :02:05.
in the fields around Stirling. But plans have stalled while a public | :02:06. | :02:11.
inquiry takes place. So they have turned their attention to North | :02:12. | :02:22.
Yorkshire. Some of these areas are thought to be rich in shale gas and | :02:23. | :02:27.
Dart Energy has identified two possible sites for fracking to take | :02:28. | :02:34.
place. I understand people are concerned. I | :02:35. | :02:38.
believe the ripping out red about it, I would be concerned as well. | :02:39. | :02:43.
This is our business and we have to get it right. | :02:44. | :02:47.
Fracking involves drilling down into the ground to release `` and using | :02:48. | :03:02.
water to release shale gas. There is an issue about the local | :03:03. | :03:11.
environment impact. Surface water contamination and the amount of | :03:12. | :03:13.
transport and infrastructure required all of which lead up to a | :03:14. | :03:20.
massive impact for local residents. But Dart Energy says safety measures | :03:21. | :03:27.
will have to be met for the drilling to take place. | :03:28. | :03:35.
You could only drill a few were sustainable in the community and | :03:36. | :03:37.
part of the community. If we are allowed to do what we want to do | :03:38. | :03:43.
then I think people will see the local benefits. | :03:44. | :03:48.
It has the financial backing of the biggest energy company in the world. | :03:49. | :03:54.
Economically, they fracking site could generates tens of millions of | :03:55. | :04:00.
pounds as well as potentially bringing down energy bills. But | :04:01. | :04:05.
first they have to persuade individuals and councils and that is | :04:06. | :04:08.
unlikely to be easy. We can speak now to energy expert | :04:09. | :04:11.
Professor Richard Davies from the University of Durham. Are | :04:12. | :04:16.
campaigners like Friends of the Earth right to be worried about | :04:17. | :04:18.
possible water contamination near fracking sites? | :04:19. | :04:26.
The research we have done at Durham University shows that water | :04:27. | :04:31.
contamination due to fracking itself is incredibly unlikely. The other | :04:32. | :04:35.
processes that are required for fracking such as moving large | :04:36. | :04:41.
amounts of water around, dealing with waste water for example, and | :04:42. | :04:46.
not sealing Wells rectally can lead to Ken at `` contamination. Is there | :04:47. | :04:58.
enough shale gas to minimise the effect of our dwindling energy | :04:59. | :05:04.
resources? To get significant amounts of gas out of the ground, | :05:05. | :05:13.
you will need lots of Wells. You would need hundreds, possibly | :05:14. | :05:18.
thousands. For it to make a difference, there needs to be lots | :05:19. | :05:25.
of Wells. The UK doesn't have an abundance of | :05:26. | :05:29.
rigs and fracking equipment, so a rapid growth in shale gas production | :05:30. | :05:33.
is unlikely, isn't it? That's right. There isn't a supply | :05:34. | :05:38.
chain in place. If this does get pushed ahead by the UK Government, | :05:39. | :05:45.
it could be five or ten years before any significant activity takes | :05:46. | :05:48.
place. So it is important that we carry on doing research like we are | :05:49. | :05:56.
doing at Durham University, that is 100% independent. | :05:57. | :06:14.
If you own a World War II gasmask, you need to be aware it could be | :06:15. | :06:17.
dangerous, especially to children. Campaigners in Leeds got in touch | :06:18. | :06:21.
with Look North to warn that the masks contain deadly asbestos. | :06:22. | :06:23.
They're concerned that a growing interest in war memorabilia means | :06:24. | :06:26.
masks are being traded online and even worn by children who are at | :06:27. | :06:29.
greater risk from the cancer`causing fibres. | :06:30. | :06:38.
They've become something of an icon and highly collectable but World War | :06:39. | :06:48.
II gas masks, while originally made to protect, are now proving | :06:49. | :06:51.
extremely dangerous because they contain asbestos. This retired nurse | :06:52. | :06:58.
and World War II enthusiast is so concerned that he is campaigning for | :06:59. | :07:02.
the sale of vintage gas masks to be banned. They contain the worst kind | :07:03. | :07:08.
of asbestos. If a child of ten years old water | :07:09. | :07:14.
one masks and inhaled a small number of Vipers, he has five times the | :07:15. | :07:19.
risk of developing young cancer compared to an adult, so the risks | :07:20. | :07:27.
are quite high. It is what is known as a class one carcinogens. | :07:28. | :07:35.
These masks have been treated by experts to make them safe to handle. | :07:36. | :07:41.
But there are around 30,000 untreated masks in circulation which | :07:42. | :07:46.
could prove deadly. They have asbestos fibres which could leak | :07:47. | :07:52.
from this filter. It only takes one fibre to cause cancer. | :07:53. | :07:57.
Despite this, gas masks are widely available online with around 500 | :07:58. | :08:03.
sold every month. They are also used in school history lessons and this | :08:04. | :08:16.
content concerns `` this concerns the teaching unions. | :08:17. | :08:24.
Tests as early as 2002 proved that the masks were dangerous but it took | :08:25. | :08:28.
six years for the Health and Safety Executive in Northern Ireland to | :08:29. | :08:34.
issue a warning. No warnings were issued to schools in England and | :08:35. | :08:39.
Wales. Further tests confirmed the dangerous but no warnings were | :08:40. | :08:42.
issued. The union wants the government to take action. The issue | :08:43. | :08:52.
is now due to under be raised `` be raised in the House of Commons on | :08:53. | :09:00.
Monday. The Department for Education has | :09:01. | :09:02.
been unable to supply us with a statement. | :09:03. | :09:09.
Later on Look North: The biggest night of his career ` Huddersfield | :09:10. | :09:12.
rugby league's Danny Brough braces himself to lead Scotland into battle | :09:13. | :09:21.
against world champions New Zealand. In other news now, and two men have | :09:22. | :09:24.
appeared before Sheffield Crown Court via video link charged with | :09:25. | :09:28.
the murder of pizza delivery driver Thavisha Peiris. Mr Peiris, who was | :09:29. | :09:31.
25, was found stabbed to death in his car on 27th October. 26`year`old | :09:32. | :09:46.
Shamraze Khan appeared from prison. The UK arm of Nestle, which is based | :09:47. | :09:50.
in York, says it's creating 1600 jobs for young people over the next | :09:51. | :09:53.
three years. The company has factories in York and Halifax, where | :09:54. | :09:57.
some of the new jobs will be created. There'll also be 300 paid | :09:58. | :10:00.
work experience placements. Nestle have factories in both York and | :10:01. | :10:03.
Halifax and their chief executive says they have to look to the | :10:04. | :10:07.
future. Young people today are in a bit of a | :10:08. | :10:13.
Catch`22. On one hand, they can't get a job because they don't have | :10:14. | :10:17.
work experience, on the other hand they cannot get work experience | :10:18. | :10:21.
because they don't have a job. I think it is our role to help young | :10:22. | :10:26.
people get out of that trap. Hundreds of former miners who lost | :10:27. | :10:29.
their jobs as a result of the restructuring of UK Coal are getting | :10:30. | :10:32.
their fuel allowance reinstated. Today's announcement by the | :10:33. | :10:34.
Government follows protests by ex`miners and widows who'd been | :10:35. | :10:38.
entitled to free coal as part of their wage and redundancy packages. | :10:39. | :10:40.
The benefit was scrapped when the company went into administration in | :10:41. | :10:46.
summer. I wanted to help a very specific | :10:47. | :10:50.
group of people who had lost out through no fault of their own, | :10:51. | :10:57.
ex`miners who lost their allowance. We have been able to help these | :10:58. | :11:02.
people because we are fixing the economy and the public finances. | :11:03. | :11:06.
More than 250 firms in Sheffield are being asked to vote on a new flood | :11:07. | :11:09.
defence scheme in the Lower Don Valley. Hundreds of properties in | :11:10. | :11:13.
the area suffered severe flooding in 2007, leading to the closure of some | :11:14. | :11:16.
businesses. If they support the plans, defences | :11:17. | :11:20.
will be built along an 8km stretch of the River Don, from the city | :11:21. | :11:24.
centre right up to the M1 motorway past Meadowhall but they'll also | :11:25. | :11:27.
have to pay some of the costs. Shamir Masri reports. | :11:28. | :11:39.
The floods of 2007 left many homes with Flood damage. Rivers breached | :11:40. | :11:46.
across the city and one of the worst affected areas was the lower Don | :11:47. | :11:57.
Valley. Areas next to the city centre right up to Meadowhall were | :11:58. | :12:01.
severely flooded. The industrial heart of the city was quickly under | :12:02. | :12:05.
water. Even RAF search and rescue teams were called in to rescue | :12:06. | :12:11.
people. Six years on, local businesses have their chance to vote | :12:12. | :12:17.
on a scheme which will see flood defences are old and 40 locations | :12:18. | :12:21.
along and eight kilometre stretch of the River Don. | :12:22. | :12:39.
You need to keep the river clear. It rose above the expected level | :12:40. | :12:45.
because there was lots of debris which got caught in the bridges and | :12:46. | :12:50.
had a disproportionate effect on the rise of the river. | :12:51. | :13:16.
We had about ?14 million worth of damage to machines. It was touch and | :13:17. | :13:21.
go whether the company could survive. This scheme is vitally | :13:22. | :13:28.
important. The risk of this ever happening again is not only a | :13:29. | :13:33.
concern to us but to any future investors in the city. | :13:34. | :13:36.
As nurses have one month to decide how they will vote. If majority vote | :13:37. | :13:47.
for it, work will begin next year. `` businesses have one month. | :13:48. | :14:02.
In rugby league, the World Cup quarter finals get underway in just | :14:03. | :14:05.
over an hour at Headingley tonight when Scotland take on reigning | :14:06. | :14:08.
champions New Zealand. Another big crowd is expected for the last match | :14:09. | :14:12.
that Yorkshire will host in this year's competition. But if you | :14:13. | :14:14.
thought that our interest in the game is limited to the venue, think | :14:15. | :14:17.
again. He is captain of the Huddersfield | :14:18. | :14:24.
Giants and is Super League man of steel but he is the pride of | :14:25. | :14:31.
Scotland. With Danny Brough as their leader, Scotland have surpassed all | :14:32. | :14:37.
expectations. I have been with the team as they have been preparing for | :14:38. | :14:44.
their quarterfinal. He qualifies for the team due to his grandfather. | :14:45. | :14:53.
The coaches have their opinions and you've got to respect that. I does | :14:54. | :15:07.
want to get on with playing. I'm doing it for my Nanna. I will | :15:08. | :15:22.
try and do my bit on Friday. Yorkshire `flavoured Scotland are a | :15:23. | :15:29.
tight bunch. They don't tend to lie down for world champions New | :15:30. | :15:34.
Zealand. We know we are not near them in the pecking order but we | :15:35. | :15:40.
will try although nobody expects us to win. In Scotland wins, it will be | :15:41. | :15:47.
banks in a large part to the White Rose of Yorkshire. | :15:48. | :15:58.
Now, we know you lot out there are heroes. You must be. Last year you | :15:59. | :16:01.
raised a staggering ?1.5 million for Children in Need. | :16:02. | :16:04.
And it's time to do it all again. We've got our very own all`singing, | :16:05. | :16:07.
all`dancing Children in Need event at the Media Museum in Bradford | :16:08. | :16:09.
tonight. Ian and Keeley are there. Yes, welcome to Bradford. It's all | :16:10. | :16:38.
happening here. We've got local band Born Thief playing for us right now | :16:39. | :16:43.
on our busking stage. And we'll have Bollywood dancers, a brass band, | :16:44. | :16:46.
choirs and of course you, our wonderful fundraisers. | :16:47. | :16:59.
We have donated all our children's meals today for a donation. That's | :17:00. | :17:03.
great. Well done. | :17:04. | :17:11.
The band behind us are donating older proceeds of their new single | :17:12. | :17:13.
to children in need. what on earth are you doing? | :17:14. | :17:55.
We are doing a 24`hour live modelling in the window. | :17:56. | :18:10.
Last year, this firm raised ?24,000. They hope to beat that this year. | :18:11. | :18:34.
This is North Yorkshire Police's big red key which smashes down doors. | :18:35. | :18:41.
They are offering the public a goal for a donation. | :18:42. | :19:08.
This is Heather, she works at a tropical butterfly house but she is | :19:09. | :19:21.
terrified of spiders, as am I. But the tarantula is about to be taken | :19:22. | :19:38.
out of his cage. Get it off me! I will donate ?10 if you do it. Well | :19:39. | :19:48.
done! Lots of schools are having | :19:49. | :19:53.
non`uniform days. They have gone the whole hog at this school, warts and | :19:54. | :19:56.
all. This year i'ts all about raising | :19:57. | :20:32.
funds by busking for the bear so we thought we'd issue a challenge to | :20:33. | :20:35.
BBC Radio Leeds presenter Georgie Spanswick to see if she could knock | :20:36. | :20:39.
out a tune. Let's take a look at how she did. | :20:40. | :20:45.
How did you get roped into this? They said the challenge for me on | :20:46. | :20:51.
the Breakfast show. I said I would sing if he sang but he never | :20:52. | :20:56.
signed. That's not fair. I thought I would do it for the beer. `` do it | :20:57. | :21:23.
for the bear. Are you going to take up his singing | :21:24. | :21:28.
career now? You answer that question. | :21:29. | :21:43.
I don't think so. Maybe not. But at the end of the day it's all | :21:44. | :21:47.
about raising money for our Children in Need. | :21:48. | :22:00.
The money helps her communication and her balance. Her general | :22:01. | :22:11.
well`being. We know that things are really tough. What message do you | :22:12. | :22:18.
have for people? Please keep giving. It really helps. You love it, don't | :22:19. | :22:30.
you? Tell us why you like riding horses. | :22:31. | :22:57.
We did a sponsored silence. You kept quiet for how long? Brilliant. I | :22:58. | :23:16.
don't think we could manage that. If you want to donate, call this | :23:17. | :23:18.
number. I said I would and ?810 if I could | :23:19. | :23:38.
get him in a onesie. He got it monogrammed. | :23:39. | :23:44.
I could have worn mine as well! As we head to this evening, it will | :23:45. | :24:38.
stay dry over the next couple of days. It will be mostly cloudy and | :24:39. | :24:47.
it could be a little bit of drizzle. Unlike yesterday, there wasn't much | :24:48. | :24:53.
of a breeze today. As we head through into this evening, it will | :24:54. | :24:59.
stay dry. We will have thicker cloud. Temperatures will drop down | :25:00. | :25:14.
to around six or seven degrees. There could be a little bit of a | :25:15. | :25:21.
frost tomorrow morning. The sun will rise at 7:34am. There could be some | :25:22. | :25:34.
patchy fog tomorrow in the morning. It will brighten up particularly in | :25:35. | :25:41.
the East. But then cloud continues to some 11 from the north`west. `` | :25:42. | :26:02.
continues to And what better cause than a scheme which lets | :26:03. | :26:10.
it will turn very cold on Monday and there will be the risk of wintry | :26:11. | :26:14.
showers. You did very well doing the weather | :26:15. | :26:32.
with us staring at you like that. We will hand you back to Bradford | :26:33. | :26:34.
now. From us, good night. | :26:35. | :26:40. |
