Hello and welcome to Friday's Look North. Tonight: The pilot jailed for | :00:08. | :00:13.
being more than three times the alcohol limit at the controls of an | :00:14. | :00:16.
Airbus. Irfan Phaze was caught as he prepared for take`off at | :00:17. | :00:19.
Leeds`Bradford Airport with more than 150 passengers on board. | :00:20. | :00:22.
Also tonight: After years in the doldrums, is Yorkshire's | :00:23. | :00:23.
manufacturing industry finally heading in the right direction? | :00:24. | :00:27.
Meet the dog who can do your washing for you, thanks to a Yorkshire | :00:28. | :00:28.
invention. We are expecting the cold weather to | :00:29. | :00:45.
continue through the course of the weekend. I will be back later with | :00:46. | :00:57.
all the details. A pilot has been jailed for nine | :00:58. | :01:01.
months for attempting to fly a passenger plane while three times | :01:02. | :01:04.
over the legal alcohol limit. 55`year`old Irfan Faiz was moments | :01:05. | :01:07.
away from taking off at Leeds Bradford Airport when he was | :01:08. | :01:10.
apprehended in September. The judge at Leeds Crown Court said there | :01:11. | :01:13.
could have been a catastrophe if the pilot hadn't been stopped. In a | :01:14. | :01:16.
moment we'll speak to a flying expert about just how widespread | :01:17. | :01:19.
this is, but, first, Dave Edwards reports. | :01:20. | :01:24.
He was a pilot with an unblemished safety record, but now Irfan Phase | :01:25. | :01:31.
may never return to the cockpit. At Leeds`Bradford Airport on 18th | :01:32. | :01:33.
September, Phase was doing pre`flight checks on a Pakistan | :01:34. | :01:38.
International Airlines plane. He was about to fly 4,000 miles to | :01:39. | :01:43.
Islamabad. 145 passengers were on board. But the night before, he'd | :01:44. | :01:48.
drunk three`quarters of a bottle of whisky. Security staff here at the | :01:49. | :01:53.
airport noticed Phase smelt of alcohol and was unsteady on his | :01:54. | :01:58.
feet. He was asked if he was fit to fly. He said, yes, he was. But a | :01:59. | :02:02.
breath test showed he was four`and`a`half times over the UK | :02:03. | :02:07.
limit for flying a plane. The Bradford Council for Mosques, whose | :02:08. | :02:11.
members regularly fly on the Leeds to Islamabad route, says Phase has | :02:12. | :02:13.
undermined people's confidence in the airline industry. All pilots | :02:14. | :02:22.
should be drug tested and breathalysed before they go into the | :02:23. | :02:28.
pit. I don't think it is happening, but we will certainly be pushing for | :02:29. | :02:31.
that to happen within the airline industry. | :02:32. | :02:34.
In a statement, Pakistan International Airlines says: | :02:35. | :02:50.
At Leeds Crown Court today, Mr Justice Coulson said it's | :02:51. | :02:54.
extraordinary that the rules in Pakistan only state there should be | :02:55. | :02:57.
a 12`hour gap between bottle and throttle, no matter how much a pilot | :02:58. | :03:04.
has drunk. He added: The sentence I pass | :03:05. | :03:07.
carries the important message that airline pilots who are in drink when | :03:08. | :03:11.
they are about to fly will go to prison. Jailing Phase for nine | :03:12. | :03:15.
months, the judge said if the pilot hadn't been stopped he would've | :03:16. | :03:18.
undoubtedly flown to Islamabad with potentially catastrophic | :03:19. | :03:18.
consequences. We're joined now by Chris Stringer, | :03:19. | :03:30.
who is the Chief Flying Instructor at Sherburn Aeroclub, near Selby. | :03:31. | :03:40.
How surprised you that a pilot with a large commercial airline had | :03:41. | :03:47.
consumed alcohol? I suppose the word isn't surprised, it is shot. Why is | :03:48. | :03:55.
that? There is no pilots he is ignorant of the facts of alcohol. | :03:56. | :04:03.
When you deal alcohol booze effects increased dramatically. The culture | :04:04. | :04:07.
that we have had for decades really is no alcohol. There is now in the | :04:08. | :04:15.
UK legal limit for pilots, but the culture is no alcohol, because of | :04:16. | :04:21.
the effect multiplying as you gain height. Should they be compulsory | :04:22. | :04:26.
testing of all pilots in the industry? At the moment it is on a | :04:27. | :04:32.
random basis. Yes it is on a random basis. The disciplines are there. | :04:33. | :04:39.
Again, certainly in our chair, in commercial flying of this kind, all | :04:40. | :04:44.
of the crew, particularly the other pilots have the duty of | :04:45. | :04:50.
responsibility if they have any concerns to take action. The command | :04:51. | :04:55.
chair is maybe not in some cultures where the captain is the boss and no | :04:56. | :05:04.
one dares question. In many the culture here is to develop that | :05:05. | :05:09.
situation where there is not an ultimate commander who is | :05:10. | :05:14.
all`powerful and omnipotent. Next tonight: The Bradford Methodist | :05:15. | :05:17.
Minister and former chairman of the Co`op Bank, Paul Flowers, has spent | :05:18. | :05:21.
the day being questioned by police in Leeds in connection with the | :05:22. | :05:23.
investigation into alleged drugs offences. Mr Flowers had not been | :05:24. | :05:27.
seen in public since last weekend when the allegations came to light. | :05:28. | :05:30.
He was arrested by police in Liverpool last night. Let's go live | :05:31. | :05:33.
to our crime correspondent John Cundy, who is outside Stainbeck | :05:34. | :05:38.
Police Station in Leeds. What do we know about the circumstances of his | :05:39. | :05:42.
arrest? Let me just tell you some breaking news. We do strongly | :05:43. | :05:46.
believe that in the last few minutes that Paul Flowers has been smuggled | :05:47. | :05:50.
out of the police station on the back`seat of a police car with his | :05:51. | :05:55.
head covered underneath a blanket. If so that would confirm with what | :05:56. | :05:58.
we have been given to believe all day, the case that he has been | :05:59. | :06:04.
granted bail. Let me take you back to the events of the last day. He | :06:05. | :06:08.
was arrested in the north end of Liverpool at about 11 o'clock last | :06:09. | :06:12.
night and his custody officially began at one o'clock this morning. | :06:13. | :06:17.
All weekly said no one where he was through the contact of other party, | :06:18. | :06:22.
but the spending earlier part of the week examining the video which | :06:23. | :06:26.
purported to show him allegedly involved in the drug deal. As the | :06:27. | :06:31.
result of that, the arrest was made last night and he was brought here | :06:32. | :06:36.
to the police station, which is the headquarters of the West Yorkshire | :06:37. | :06:45.
drugs scheme. Presumably detectors have been questioning him and there | :06:46. | :06:50.
is a lot of talk about, presumably. We heard nothing at all until the | :06:51. | :06:54.
last few minutes. Late this afternoon his solicitor emerged from | :06:55. | :07:00.
the police station. I must warn viewers that in this footage there | :07:01. | :07:10.
is flash photography. He has not apologised for anything. Enquiries | :07:11. | :07:14.
are still ongoing. Is he cooperating with the police? Absolutely. Will he | :07:15. | :07:20.
be given bail tonight? I hope so. He is a man of good character. Until | :07:21. | :07:27.
those events of the last few minutes, we had expected the | :07:28. | :07:30.
questioning to go on until late into this evening. It would seem that he | :07:31. | :07:38.
has been granted police bail. There will be further enquiries. Although | :07:39. | :07:45.
this has `` this may be a minor criminal charge, it has gained | :07:46. | :07:52.
national interest because of the political implications. | :07:53. | :07:56.
We have had a statement from Bradford Council about Paul Flowers, | :07:57. | :08:01.
who used to be a councillor in the city. It relates to the | :08:02. | :08:04.
inappropriate material found on his laptop that the council gave him. | :08:05. | :08:09.
But council leader has called for a report outlining what action was | :08:10. | :08:12.
taken about this when the material was discovered. A report will be | :08:13. | :08:17.
made public and decisions about further action will then be taken. | :08:18. | :08:25.
Later on Look North: It's the holders against the hosts ` the | :08:26. | :08:28.
mighty New Zealand take on England with a place in the World Cup Final | :08:29. | :08:32.
at stake. In other news, plans to privatise | :08:33. | :08:35.
three South Yorkshire prisons have been cancelled because of an ongoing | :08:36. | :08:38.
investigation into the leading bidder. The Justice Secretary, Chris | :08:39. | :08:40.
Grayling, said the Prison Service would remain in charge at Hatfield, | :08:41. | :08:43.
Moorland and Lindholme prisons while allegations against Serco remained | :08:44. | :08:45.
outstanding. The contractor is accused of over`charging the | :08:46. | :08:47.
Government for electronically tagging prisoners. | :08:48. | :08:56.
Work is finally due to begin next week on the site of Bradford's | :08:57. | :09:05.
long`awaited shopping centre. Developer Westfield has confirmed it | :09:06. | :09:08.
will start preparation works at the Broadway site in the city centre on | :09:09. | :09:11.
Monday. The company says it'll be clearing and surveying the site | :09:12. | :09:14.
before starting construction by the end of the year. | :09:15. | :09:18.
The former miners' union president Arthur Scargill has written to the | :09:19. | :09:20.
police watchdog asking it to investigate his arrest at the | :09:21. | :09:23.
Orgreave coke works during the 1984 strike. Mr Scargill alleges the | :09:24. | :09:26.
arrest was planned by senior officers. He also alleges South | :09:27. | :09:29.
Yorkshire Police kept a conspiracy file against him during the | :09:30. | :09:31.
year`long strike. The Independent Police Complaints Commission is | :09:32. | :09:34.
already considering whether to investigate police conduct after a | :09:35. | :09:36.
BBC documentary claimed officers may have colluded in writing court | :09:37. | :09:39.
statements. The force has said it'll assist the IPCC with its new line of | :09:40. | :09:41.
inquiry. Tomorrow is the last day of trading | :09:42. | :09:56.
at Sheffield's Castle Market. The council has decided the ageing | :09:57. | :09:59.
structure is no longer fit for purpose and is moving the market to | :10:00. | :10:02.
a new complex on The Moor. Some traders have criticised the cost of | :10:03. | :10:06.
rents on the new site, but the council says it'll help regenerate | :10:07. | :10:13.
the city. When the recession hit, many experts | :10:14. | :10:16.
said the key to recovery was to start making things again and in the | :10:17. | :10:19.
manufacturing heartlands of Yorkshire, the signs are that that | :10:20. | :10:21.
is happening. The CBI's latest figures for | :10:22. | :10:24.
manufacturing growth show an 18`year high. Cathy Killick has been to | :10:25. | :10:27.
visit two South Yorkshire companies to see how they're faring. When Tom | :10:28. | :10:40.
opens its `` opens his sample case, the contents are quite unusual. They | :10:41. | :10:47.
are prostatic noses and eyes for surgical use. His company is at the | :10:48. | :10:52.
cutting edge of design technology and in August he saw his best | :10:53. | :10:57.
figures have, but that was followed by a slump. What does he think that | :10:58. | :11:02.
means for the future? Through the history of the company, it has | :11:03. | :11:06.
always been up and down. In the last maybe two years, the peaks have been | :11:07. | :11:12.
a bit higher and the bit `` and the dips have been that it lower. There | :11:13. | :11:19.
is an upward trends, but it is very subtle. Stephen works for at the | :11:20. | :11:24.
Manufacturing advisory service. He helps lots of small businesses and | :11:25. | :11:29.
says at last he is seeing positive signs of recovery. The companies we | :11:30. | :11:36.
sought opinions from, over 40% expect increases in new jobs. | :11:37. | :11:41.
Something like 80% were expecting to get new Roberts and new services on | :11:42. | :11:44.
the market. It is really encouraging. At this wire company, | :11:45. | :11:56.
the orders are fun again `` our flooding in. | :11:57. | :12:06.
The managing director, Peter Robinson, put it down to a general | :12:07. | :12:12.
upturn and keeping a high quality, so customers stay loyal. Everyone I | :12:13. | :12:17.
talk to is upbeat. We have had enough of the recession and it is | :12:18. | :12:23.
time to go forward. Invest in the future is also on the up. Peter is | :12:24. | :12:27.
spending a lot on new machinery and he wouldn't be doing that unless the | :12:28. | :12:39.
future was looking bright. Before seven o'clock: As Dr Who | :12:40. | :12:43.
turns 50, we will be in Bradford to find out about some of his biggest | :12:44. | :12:50.
fans. Next tonight: The world's first | :12:51. | :12:53.
washing machine that can be activated by a dog's bark. The | :12:54. | :12:56.
so`called Woof To Wash machine is designed to help disabled people | :12:57. | :12:59.
live independently. It's been invented in Yorkshire and our | :13:00. | :13:02.
reporter Danny Carpenter has been at the launch in Sheffield. | :13:03. | :13:12.
We are used to the idea of dogs being man's best friend, but some | :13:13. | :13:16.
dogs take this idea further than others. Nelson is a support job. He | :13:17. | :13:22.
helps his owner, Brenda, with the number of high school tasks that he | :13:23. | :13:27.
would struggle `` that she would struggle to manage with. I would | :13:28. | :13:34.
have to have carers in. Nelson is registered as my carer. It would be | :13:35. | :13:39.
very different without him. I wouldn't feel able to go white much. | :13:40. | :13:46.
Can you get the washing, Nelson? As well as stripping beds and helping | :13:47. | :13:51.
her undress, Nelson `` Nelson can load the washing machine. Duffy is | :13:52. | :13:59.
learning to turn the machine on and off. The machine has been adapted to | :14:00. | :14:07.
make it possible for adults to open, load and even starts. Duffy is a | :14:08. | :14:16.
pioneer. Others can follow. The machine uses simple voice activation | :14:17. | :14:23.
software. The clever bit is getting rid of all the knobs, buttons and | :14:24. | :14:28.
programmes. If you consider people with visual impairment, high simple | :14:29. | :14:32.
a single programme is for them to use. For people with learning | :14:33. | :14:37.
difficulties, it strips away the complexity. For people who are | :14:38. | :14:42.
athletic, no knobs to twist, just a single row machine. Anyone making | :14:43. | :14:47.
the right noise can start the machine. When the cycle is finished, | :14:48. | :14:56.
the dog can open the door, and unload the wash. It is brilliance, | :14:57. | :15:07.
and so rewarding. That is brilliant! Sport now and | :15:08. | :15:15.
tomorrow is the day of reckoning for England's Rugby League players, | :15:16. | :15:17.
including an important Yorkshire contingent. To reach the World Cup | :15:18. | :15:21.
Final, they have to overcome a huge hurdle at Wembley tomorrow ` | :15:22. | :15:23.
reigning Champions New Zealand! Well, Tanya Arnold has sent us this | :15:24. | :15:27.
report on the final day of preparations for both teams. The | :15:28. | :15:36.
England squad had their final training session at Wembley today. | :15:37. | :15:42.
Notable by his absence was the former Castleford halfback Randy | :15:43. | :15:50.
Chase, who has been dropped. He has asked for a better time at home. `` | :15:51. | :15:58.
a bit of time at home. He is back home with his family. It is a big | :15:59. | :16:03.
decision from Steve McNamara, but many have wanted to see Gareth | :16:04. | :16:08.
Whittock given his school in this tournament. Now he gets his chance | :16:09. | :16:12.
against the reigning champions at the World Cup Final place at stake. | :16:13. | :16:20.
Sonny Bill Williams, already a World Cup winner in rugby union, the | :16:21. | :16:23.
heavyweight boxing champion of New Zealand, and looking to add the | :16:24. | :16:29.
Rugby League World Cup to his list of titles. If you came up against | :16:30. | :16:35.
him, what is the trick to stopping him? I don't know! If you knew that, | :16:36. | :16:42.
you would rebuild `` you would be wealthy. He is a great athlete. It | :16:43. | :16:59.
will be massive. Exciting. I have played in a few big stadiums. I | :17:00. | :17:06.
guess you still get the butterflies, but that is why you play the game. | :17:07. | :17:13.
This will be a massive test for England, but not making the final | :17:14. | :17:18.
would be deemed a failure by the squad. | :17:19. | :17:25.
Come on, England! Football now and we seem to have a Yorkshire derby to | :17:26. | :17:29.
look forward to every weekend these days. | :17:30. | :17:32.
Tomorrow's is in The Championship at Hillsborough, where Sheffield | :17:33. | :17:34.
Wednesday meet Huddersfield Town. With both of them in the bottom half | :17:35. | :17:38.
of that table, there is a lot at stake. Huddersfield star striker | :17:39. | :17:40.
James Vaughan returns from suspension and has been made captain | :17:41. | :17:43.
for the occasion. Meanwhile, the home manager, Dave Jones, is relying | :17:44. | :17:47.
on Wednesday's fans, as much as his players, to turn the tide in their | :17:48. | :17:55.
favour. What we want is the same as what we get week in and week out. | :17:56. | :17:59.
When we played Redding, they were the extra man for us. There is a lot | :18:00. | :18:07.
at stake, not just the points, but the bragging rights. I am quite | :18:08. | :18:14.
outspoken on the pitch. I will be wearing the armband, so it will be | :18:15. | :18:20.
difference `` so it will be different. | :18:21. | :18:26.
In Rugby League, Scotland might be out of the World Cup, but the | :18:27. | :18:29.
celebrations over their impressive showing in the tournament might not | :18:30. | :18:32.
yet be over. The Scotland and Huddersfield Giants' captain, Danny | :18:33. | :18:35.
Brough, has been short listed for the International Player of the Year | :18:36. | :18:38.
Award. He's been nominated along with Australian full`back Greg | :18:39. | :18:41.
Inglis, and New Zealand forward Sonny Bill Williams. The winner will | :18:42. | :18:48.
be announced next week. Now, get your Sonic Screwdrivers at | :18:49. | :18:51.
the ready because tomorrow is the Day of the Doctor when the BBC | :18:52. | :18:55.
celebrates 50 years of one of British Television's most popular | :18:56. | :19:01.
programmes ` Doctor Who. As part of the anniversary celebrations a | :19:02. | :19:04.
special exhibition is taking place at Bradford's National Media Museum. | :19:05. | :19:07.
But it's not just the usual memorabilia, this collection is made | :19:08. | :19:10.
up of stuff that the fans of the show have donated. Heidi Tomlinson | :19:11. | :19:21.
is there. You find me surrounded by an iconic villain. I reckon these | :19:22. | :19:25.
are the best baddies. Don't ask me how, but these ballots are | :19:26. | :19:31.
home`made, on loan from fans. They are part of the 600 his exhibition | :19:32. | :19:36.
at the media Museum in Bradford. It is the mark five decades of the | :19:37. | :19:51.
dock. `` the doctor. It is time to tremble. Steel giants Wigan | :19:52. | :19:57.
electrocuting touch, this is an original from the dock to review | :19:58. | :20:01.
set, but most of these are from personal collections, showing the | :20:02. | :20:10.
dedication of Doctor Who devotees. The books for a night out for the | :20:11. | :20:16.
fans in the 1980s to relive the story is shown on television. Back | :20:17. | :20:19.
in those days there were even videos available. So, the books were a way | :20:20. | :20:32.
to relive the story. Where are we going? All these items have come to | :20:33. | :20:42.
us from Germany, one person, and then QT asked who couldn't buy | :20:43. | :20:46.
material out there easily, so she made her own. I love the home`made | :20:47. | :20:52.
objects that we have here. Unique, one of pieces. This is a home`made | :20:53. | :21:04.
tardis. This was made by a man from Lancaster when he was only 15. He | :21:05. | :21:08.
had a project every summer to make his tardis, because his parents | :21:09. | :21:12.
couldn't afford to buy him the merchandise. | :21:13. | :21:22.
Where on earth am I? I feel like I have travelled back in time. He is | :21:23. | :21:33.
this? Tom Baker, my favourite. . I wonder what he is thinking? | :21:34. | :21:48.
The sound of that Alex always fills me with fear. You can make quite Tom | :21:49. | :21:56.
Baker up here. You can see David Tennant, and Matt Smith. I have a | :21:57. | :22:06.
feeling this might be Charlotte Leeming, attempting to exterminate | :22:07. | :22:24.
an enemy. Is that you! Oh my words! My husband is a maths of Doctor Who | :22:25. | :22:33.
fan. `` a massive Doctor Who fan. He persuaded me to do that. | :22:34. | :22:37.
Patrick Troughton was the second Dr Who, who played the role for three | :22:38. | :22:41.
years back in the 1960s. We're joined by his son, Mark. To grow up | :22:42. | :22:45.
in a house for your dad. Who, what was that like? Strangely boring! For | :22:46. | :22:53.
me it was normal. It was only when people queued up for his autograph | :22:54. | :22:59.
at the street, or on the ferry gone over to France, that you suddenly | :23:00. | :23:05.
realise that he was famous. I was only seven. A lot of people always | :23:06. | :23:11.
talk about his sense of humour. Was he a funny dad? He was. He didn't | :23:12. | :23:18.
have to try too hard to be. Who, it was just himself. He mucked around a | :23:19. | :23:25.
lot. I think my children have inherited that sense of humour. We | :23:26. | :23:30.
have some wonderful exhibits and you have put something in. I think this | :23:31. | :23:38.
is the back`up recorder that dad used. The original one with the blue | :23:39. | :23:42.
tape and the castle open when he was doing the three. Tours. I don't know | :23:43. | :23:47.
if that was deliberate by somebody else or not! This is the second one. | :23:48. | :23:53.
I haven't thought about selling it on eBay, but who knows? Matt Smith, | :23:54. | :24:00.
he often says his favourite was your dad. My great too! He based his | :24:01. | :24:08.
mannerisms on him. I was very glad to hear that. I wonder if the reason | :24:09. | :24:12.
why he left was the Patrick Triton rule, which is due to stay in apart | :24:13. | :24:17.
for more than three years. That has become known as his ruler. Once | :24:18. | :24:25.
people say, once you have been the Time Lord, what else can you do? You | :24:26. | :24:33.
get typecast. It is hard to move on. Dad was never thinking that he would | :24:34. | :24:38.
stay there forever. I think after three years he felt his time was | :24:39. | :24:41.
done. Would you describe yourself as a fan? I am not as addicted to it as | :24:42. | :24:49.
my kids are, but yes, I am, and I have a favourite. It has to be dad | :24:50. | :24:54.
's commission market is. I was worried for a second! He is your | :24:55. | :25:06.
favourite? A close friend lived next door to David Tennant when he was | :25:07. | :25:08.
Doctor Who. tomorrow we will wake up with some | :25:09. | :25:42.
fog and frost. It will be too bad a day. Will be brightness around, it | :25:43. | :25:47.
will be cold but dry. We are looking at a lot of settled weather in the | :25:48. | :25:53.
next few days. There will be frost overnight, but high pressure will | :25:54. | :26:03.
build into the `` will build in. There will be 12 showers this | :26:04. | :26:07.
evening, that's they will largely die away. `` one or two showers. | :26:08. | :26:17.
Some of the mist and fog developing could be thick by the morning. I | :26:18. | :26:22.
think in the countryside, most places will be a few degrees below | :26:23. | :26:27.
freezing. There could be the odd icy patch. | :26:28. | :26:38.
Some of the dense fog patches will linger on in the morning. There will | :26:39. | :26:49.
be bright and sunny spells tomorrow, and it will be largely drive. You | :26:50. | :26:55.
will need to wrap up warm, because temperatures will be below average. | :26:56. | :27:00.
You can see that temperatures will be at 67 degrees. Perhaps the odd | :27:01. | :27:12.
shower. Enjoy your weekend, good night! | :27:13. | :27:14. |
