North. First this evening, more than 50 people from Yorkshire have

received awards in the New Year's Honours list. Some of those honoured

are pictured here and include an MP, charity workers and the man who

inspired athlete Hannah Cockroft to Paralympic glory. Cathy Killick

reports. As a coach and administrator Malcolm has helped

thousands of disabled people get into sport, including this famous

Paralympian. He saw me go through every single sport, we tried tennis

and rugby and then he stepped `` he helped me move into athletics. It is

great to see his hard work recognised. He has received an MBE

for his work. When you read the first lines, it does not sink in.

And then it does and you feel very privileged. It was a personal

tragedy that led Pat and directly to our MBE. Her daughter died after

sniffing from an aerosol so Pat set up a fund to others suffering from

similar problems. We are trying to educate children and teachers on the

dangers of substance abuse. I feel honoured and humbled that the same

time. MBE is also go to other community workers in South

Yorkshire. And for another man for his services to the arts community.

This woman is not a football fan but recognise that lots of other Asians

were and set up a trust to make the sport more inclusive and she has

worked tirelessly for Rotherham's multicultural community. A lot of

people in Rotherham do a lot of good work and it is a fantastic time. It

is great to be recognised. After 38 years after caring for animals, Jean

is amazed to be made an MBE. I was absolutely thrilled and amazed. Who

would have thought that I would get the support? I am totally thrilled

and gobsmacked. The MP for rather Filing will now be

known as Sir Kevin Barron. He is to be knighted for his political and

public service `` Rather Valley. Other news from around the region

now and an investigation is underway after a train hit a car at a level

crossing in North Yorkshire. The incident happened just after midday

at the Market Garden crossing between Ruswarp and Sleights near

Whitby. Nobody was hurt and the train ` which was travelling from

Middlesbrough ` remained on the track.

Police have named the four`year`old boy who died in a traffic collision

in Mexborough last week. Dylan Walker was in a car travelling from

Mexborough towards High Melton when it collided with a lorry last

Monday. The 51`year`old driver of the car suffered slight injuries and

the 49`year`old lorry driver was unhurt.

South Yorkshire Police are making a new appeal to try and trace a man

who went missing four years ago. Thomas Groome was 54 when he

disappeared on New Year's Day in 2010. He was last seen leaving his

son's house in Thorne near Doncaster. Anyone who saw him or his

car is being encouraged to come forward. Earlier this year, five

people were arrested on suspicion of his murder.

Firefighters in Yorkshire have just begun their latest strike over

government plans to raise their retirement age and increase pension

contributions. Tonight's walk`out is the eighth strike by the Fire

Brigades Union since September. The latest action will end at half past

midnight. Today's the last day for people to

sign up to be a volunteer "Tour Maker" for the start of next year's

Tour De France here in Yorkshire. The roles are similar to the Games

Makers, which were a big success at last summer's London Olympics.

Volunteers will be on the front line to help spectators and organisers.

Welcome to Yorkshire says there's been a brilliant response already

with thousands of people putting themselves forward.

Now, in 2013, it seemed like the Yorkshire weather was never far from

the headlines. We had the coldest spring since the early '60s with

snow drifts ten feet high. That gave way to a long warm summer and the

hottest July we've had in years. The year then ended with a North Sea

storm surge, the highest for over half a century. With a look back at

those events, here's Paul Hudson. 2013 soon became small garden and

cold. By the ever hours of Monday the 21st of January, lots of snow

across parts of our region where the deepest since December 2010 at 21

centimetres at this bridge and a notable 80 centimetres and the

middle of Chechen city centre. And the end of winter was not far from

average, but it certainly had a sting and steel with the worst

snowfall in March since 1979, bringing chaos to the region. 20

centimetres depth of snow was recorded at the spark but dress at

the Pennines reached even deeper. It was the coldest winters since 1892.

If Spring was grand, some are made up for it and after sex excessive

wash`outs, at last the sun shone for weeks on end. July was the hottest

since 2006 and summer was the top five warmest on record `` sex

excessive wash`outs. ` the number six. The highest North Sea surged

since 1953 which lead to flooding along part of our coastline. 2013

weather`wise was quite a year. From one of the coldest spring is on

records to one of the warmest summers, followed by the worst fatal

surge since 1953. What does the beginning of 2014 have

in store for us? Here is Paul Mooney.

Most places will be dry by the end of the night. It will feel cold with

temperatures down to three or four Celsius. On New Year's Day you

should make the most of any early brightness because it will not last

too long. By lunchtime the next band of heavy wet rain was spent at cross

and bring some windy conditions with gusty South easterly winds.

Temperatures will get to eight Celsius at best. The blustery

nature may provide her own pyrotechnics in the run-up to bid

night tonight. We have some heavy showers in western parts, starting

to ease a bit across Scotland and Northern Ireland. But the showers

further south are heavier, with some flashes of lightning as they move

eastwards. They do get a bit more hit and miss as we head towards

midnight, but a greater chance of getting wet in the south as we move

into 2014. Cardiff and London could see heavy downpours. Further north,

you could be greeting the New Year on a dry note. A touch of frost in

northern and eastern areas going into New Year's Day. A few showers

continue into the morning, but on New Year's Day, we have a few more

heavy showers coming in. Rain pushing into the west, where the

ground is saturated already. Persistent rain pushing its way

northwards,
