calls for UN peacekeepers to be sent in. That's all from the | :00:00. | :00:00.
Good evening. Welcome to Monday's Look North. On the programme | :00:07. | :00:12.
tonight: Has Kellingley Colliery only got hours left? After miners | :00:13. | :00:15.
reject a ?10 million loan, they're told the pit could close in 48 | :00:16. | :00:19.
hours. They've called for more talks with the owners, UK Coal. | :00:20. | :00:21.
Also tonight: We've been given exclusive access to the new | :00:22. | :00:24.
technology installed at Sheffield's Woodbourn Road athletics track. | :00:25. | :00:34.
This giant sea bird is a picky eater. Find out later if she can be | :00:35. | :00:38.
tempted by a takeaway. And so near, but so far for the Blades in their | :00:39. | :00:42.
eight` goal FA Cup thriller at Wembley. We'll have all the action | :00:43. | :00:49.
and reaction. With high pressure dominating, we will have some fine | :00:50. | :00:53.
weather this week. I will be back later with the forecast. | :00:54. | :01:05.
Good evening. First tonight to claims that Kellingley Colliery | :01:06. | :01:07.
could be hours from closing. Miners met last night to discuss the terms | :01:08. | :01:12.
of a deal struck by UK Coal and the Government which would have kept the | :01:13. | :01:15.
pit open for another 18 months, but which would still see 700 jobs go. | :01:16. | :01:19.
That deal, which includes a ?10 million government loan for a | :01:20. | :01:22.
managed shutdown, could only work with union support. But in a show of | :01:23. | :01:28.
hands the National Union of Mineworkers rejected it. This | :01:29. | :01:30.
afternoon, miners told us they're now being pressured into saying they | :01:31. | :01:34.
will carry on working with the threat of redundancy hanging over | :01:35. | :01:44.
them. Emma Glasbey is at Kellingley. Another very difficult day for the | :01:45. | :01:49.
miners. Some of them went home earlier and tell the they are angry | :01:50. | :01:54.
and still do not know what is happening. They fear by the middle | :01:55. | :01:57.
of the week the pit will close and they will be out of work. | :01:58. | :02:02.
Workers from the early shift heading home. They say they have been told | :02:03. | :02:09.
the pitch will shut within 48 hours, unless they agreed to a managed | :02:10. | :02:15.
closure `` the pit. What is the mood like? Very angry, they do not want | :02:16. | :02:20.
redundancies. It is not clear what will happen? They said if we do not | :02:21. | :02:26.
agree shortly they will shut us down in 48 hours, so they are putting | :02:27. | :02:31.
pressure on us. We will have to wait and see. We are a band of brothers | :02:32. | :02:37.
and we stick together. At a meeting last night the national new of | :02:38. | :02:42.
Mineworkers rejected a government deal that would see UK Coal given a | :02:43. | :02:48.
?10 million loan to manage the closure of Kellingley Colliery over | :02:49. | :02:53.
18 months. I cannot see how you would have a workforce committed to | :02:54. | :02:58.
a programme that will eventually put them on the dole. I cannot see | :02:59. | :03:03.
anybody, who is human, who could sign up to a deal that would do | :03:04. | :03:08.
that. Today there were calls for all sides to hold more talks and for the | :03:09. | :03:15.
union to reconsider. I hope they will re`engaging talks and talks | :03:16. | :03:21.
with their members. I imagine it is a negotiation tactic, but I would | :03:22. | :03:29.
urge them to sit down and think of the best outcome. I think we have to | :03:30. | :03:35.
do everything we can to find an option working with Europe, new | :03:36. | :03:41.
investors, that will keep Kellingley Colliery open beyond 2015. That is | :03:42. | :03:45.
what is important to communities, not just the hundreds of jobs, but | :03:46. | :03:52.
the business is dependent on it. 700 jobs will be lost when the colliery | :03:53. | :03:57.
closes. It seems the closure could be imminent. | :03:58. | :04:03.
UK Coal confirmed further discussions will take place and they | :04:04. | :04:07.
are seeking to finalise a package for an 18`month closure programme | :04:08. | :04:12.
and say without it, the business is likely to enter insolvency in the | :04:13. | :04:17.
coming days. I am joined by the general secretary of the union. If | :04:18. | :04:21.
the managed closure happens, some could keep their jobs for up to 18 | :04:22. | :04:26.
months, otherwise everybody is out of work in 48 hours. Why are you not | :04:27. | :04:32.
agreeing to the managed closure? The union knows there is an alternative | :04:33. | :04:37.
to the package put forward by UK Coal. Other countries subsidise the | :04:38. | :04:41.
coal industry is on a managed closure plan that could last 22018 | :04:42. | :04:45.
and British miners should be treated the same as others treat their | :04:46. | :04:52.
miners. It is realistic the British Government should do it. We get 40% | :04:53. | :04:57.
of energy from coal and the world price has been dropping. Over the | :04:58. | :05:01.
past eight months it has dropped dramatically. I have not seen a drop | :05:02. | :05:04.
in electricity bills people are paying. Do you think it will close | :05:05. | :05:11.
this week? I understand some have lost their jobs already? 67 men were | :05:12. | :05:18.
laid off on Friday and this does not protect them. We had young lads who | :05:19. | :05:25.
were taken on and the theory is they could be the first to finish with no | :05:26. | :05:29.
state redundancy because they have worked less than two years. UK Coal | :05:30. | :05:34.
are threatening they could put the company insolvent in the next 48 | :05:35. | :05:39.
hours if they do not get government finance to finance their 18`month | :05:40. | :05:44.
closure plan. A lot is happening here over the next couple of days | :05:45. | :05:48.
and we will bring you the latest as it happens. | :05:49. | :05:53.
A slaughterhouse owner from Todmorden and his site manager have | :05:54. | :05:56.
appeared in court today to face charges in connection with the horse | :05:57. | :05:59.
meat scandal. Peter Boddy and David Moss are accused of failing to keep | :06:00. | :06:02.
proper paperwork relating to the sale of horse meat. They're the | :06:03. | :06:05.
first prosecutions since last year's revelations about horse meat | :06:06. | :06:08.
entering the human food chain. Joe Inwood was at the hearing at | :06:09. | :06:15.
Westminster Magistrates' Court. It was a relatively brief appearance | :06:16. | :06:21.
for Peter Boddy and David Moss. Both spoke only to confirm names, dates | :06:22. | :06:24.
of birth and addresses. Peter Boddy runs and abattoir and is charged | :06:25. | :06:30.
with failing to keep paperwork one step forward, one step back | :06:31. | :06:35.
documentation, in relation to the selling of horses slaughtered at his | :06:36. | :06:38.
abattoir. You can see him entering court here. David Moss is charged | :06:39. | :06:44.
with the same offence and also one of fraud, the prosecution alleging | :06:45. | :06:48.
he altered an invoice relating to the sale of Hall's meat. It comes | :06:49. | :06:56.
after the scandal last year. A snap investigation found the alleged | :06:57. | :07:00.
irregularities. It should be said neither man is charged with | :07:01. | :07:05.
fraudulently selling horse meat. The district judge said the matter must | :07:06. | :07:11.
be heard at a Crown Court after he was not entered on their behalf. | :07:12. | :07:14.
They will appear on the 28th of April next. | :07:15. | :07:20.
Later on Look North: We're joined by the world powerlifting champion from | :07:21. | :07:24.
Leeds. Ali Jawad was born with no legs and suffers from Crohn's | :07:25. | :07:27.
disease. Last week he held off all competition in Dubai. | :07:28. | :07:31.
More news now and a murder investigation has been launched in | :07:32. | :07:34.
Leeds after a 62`year`old woman was found with knife wounds to her chest | :07:35. | :07:38.
and back. Police were called to a property in Rawdon late last night, | :07:39. | :07:42.
where they found the body of a dead woman. They're yet to carry out a | :07:43. | :07:46.
postmortem and the victim hasn't been named. A 65``year`old man has | :07:47. | :07:49.
been arrested on suspicion of murder. | :07:50. | :07:51.
Police searching for a Bradford University student, who went missing | :07:52. | :07:55.
in Liverpool more than six weeks ago, have recovered a body from the | :07:56. | :07:58.
River Mersey. Aamir Qudeer, who's a 21``year`old first`year engineering | :07:59. | :08:01.
student, was last seen on February 26th before vanishing in Liverpool. | :08:02. | :08:04.
A formal identification of the body is due to take place today. | :08:05. | :08:12.
GP surgeries in two parts of Yorkshire have been given a share of | :08:13. | :08:16.
a ?50 million fund to make their services more accessible to | :08:17. | :08:19.
patients. The money is going to practices in west Wakefield, and in | :08:20. | :08:21.
Hambleton, Richmondshire and Whitby. It'll be spent on things like longer | :08:22. | :08:24.
opening hours, weekend appointments and consultations over the internet. | :08:25. | :08:36.
As patients, we do not just get sick of Monday to Friday, nine to five, | :08:37. | :08:42.
we want to see family doctors, but GPs are also under pressure. The | :08:43. | :08:46.
great thing about what they are doing at this surgery is to find new | :08:47. | :08:52.
ways for patients to quickly get access to help they need. | :08:53. | :08:56.
Drivers in the centre of York will have noticed something a bit | :08:57. | :08:59.
different today. It's the first weekday since last August that | :09:00. | :09:02.
Lendal Bridge has been fully open to all traffic. On Saturday the | :09:03. | :09:05.
controversial ban was lifted. Over 57,000 fines have been given out. | :09:06. | :09:08.
The council insists the closure was lawful but admits feedback was | :09:09. | :09:12.
overwhelmingly negative. It's 30 years today since the Jorvik | :09:13. | :09:17.
Viking Centre opened in York. It was built on the site of an | :09:18. | :09:19.
archaeological dig, recreating a Viking city of 1,000 years ago. A | :09:20. | :09:22.
special birthday celebration has taken place in Coppergate. I still | :09:23. | :09:33.
have one of the coins from the early 1990s from the museum, stamped it | :09:34. | :09:37.
myself. Well done. Look North has been given exclusive | :09:38. | :09:41.
access to technology that will be installed at Sheffield's Woodbourn | :09:42. | :09:44.
Road athletics track. A quarter of a million pounds will be spent there | :09:45. | :09:47.
so athletes and the public can get the most of out their training. | :09:48. | :09:51.
Since the Don Valley Stadium was demolished it has become the city's | :09:52. | :09:54.
main athletics track. James Vincent was given a first look at the | :09:55. | :10:00.
technology they'll use. Six months after it reopened, major | :10:01. | :10:07.
investment has started at the Don Valley Stadium's replacement. | :10:08. | :10:11.
Sheffield Hallam University, the council and other sponsors are | :10:12. | :10:16.
spending a quarter of ?1 million on technologies that helped athletes at | :10:17. | :10:21.
London 2012. I am with Steve from the University. We have two cameras | :10:22. | :10:26.
that recorded the performance. What do they tell you? The first is | :10:27. | :10:33.
really an immediate feedback system that the athlete and the coach can | :10:34. | :10:37.
use to look at technique. This camera is a thermal imaging camera, | :10:38. | :10:45.
and that gives information about tracking, we can track the athlete | :10:46. | :10:49.
easier and get more information about temperature. We have done a | :10:50. | :10:53.
lot of work with UK sport and we are using these systems to help elite | :10:54. | :11:00.
athletes. It is specifically for the Commonwealth Games, to improve | :11:01. | :11:05.
performance. The stadium is still being demolished. When the council | :11:06. | :11:12.
closed it in September last year, Woodbourn Road was reopened. It has | :11:13. | :11:16.
ground to make up as the main athletics venue in Sheffield. This | :11:17. | :11:21.
technology is crucial because I can look at my technique in slow motion | :11:22. | :11:25.
and see details of things I need to work on at this level, they are the | :11:26. | :11:31.
things you are looking for. It is not just for elite athletes. The | :11:32. | :11:36.
university wants people to get on track and use it for themselves. The | :11:37. | :11:41.
technology will be installed within a year. It is hoped it will be | :11:42. | :11:47.
elsewhere in Sheffield facilities in the future, helping to maintain the | :11:48. | :11:52.
city's image as a city of sport. I would like to have seen him run | :11:53. | :11:59.
the hundred yards. Before seven o'clock: Sheffield United had a big | :12:00. | :12:08.
day at Wembley in the FA cup semi final against Hull. The Blades fans | :12:09. | :12:11.
out`sang and outnumbered the Tigers' supporters, but ultimately they were | :12:12. | :12:16.
outplayed. And find out why Yorkshire's fussiest customer is | :12:17. | :12:25.
eagerly awaiting this takeaway. I can smell those fish and chips from | :12:26. | :12:32.
here. Not quite. Now for the sport. Fantastic at Wembley yesterday. | :12:33. | :12:38.
It was incredible occasion. Sheffield United, beating two | :12:39. | :12:43.
Premier League sides to get them. Watching the game, you did not see | :12:44. | :12:51.
the teams. They outnumbered them as you said. | :12:52. | :13:03.
What struck me when Hull scored the fifth goal, Sheffield United fans | :13:04. | :13:05.
applauded because they realised their side had given everything. We | :13:06. | :13:13.
can walk out of Wembley with heads held high, even though disappointed. | :13:14. | :13:18.
Everybody at Sheffield United did just that. I am nervous. I'm get | :13:19. | :13:29.
back `` getting married next week and I'm more nervous. Earlier, they | :13:30. | :13:37.
walked into the stadium proud. And atmosphere to savour with an all | :13:38. | :13:44.
Yorkshire semifinal and a first half dominated by Sheffield United. Look | :13:45. | :13:48.
at this for a finish. A beautiful cross. Jose Baxter. And then Yannick | :13:49. | :13:55.
Sagbo just before half`time. Immediately, Sheffield regained the | :13:56. | :14:02.
lead. Stefan Scougall, what game he had. The worst thing happened at the | :14:03. | :14:06.
start of the second half of the Blades. Matt Fryatt levels. No | :14:07. | :14:12.
doubting the quality of this goal with Tom Huddlestone, man of the | :14:13. | :14:16.
match, making it three ` two. Stephen Quinn gets the fourth goal. | :14:17. | :14:20.
He loves Sheffield United with a passion, and he did not want to | :14:21. | :14:25.
celebrate. Jamie Murphy made it 4`3. And then the final act, David | :14:26. | :14:35.
Meyler rounding off the 5`3 win. Nothing but pride in defeat Nigel | :14:36. | :14:39.
Clough. Emotionally shattered. Boys gave everything. That is what people | :14:40. | :14:45.
asked of us. Disappointed right now. That is what happens at | :14:46. | :14:53.
Wembley. I have mixed emotions. The question was posed to me during the | :14:54. | :14:58.
week, would I celebrate? I said I had too much respect for a big club. | :14:59. | :15:02.
They help me grow as a player and looked after me and my family and it | :15:03. | :15:08.
just had to happen, it was written in the stars. Mixed emotions but I | :15:09. | :15:12.
am happy to have scored at Wembley and get to the final. The fans were | :15:13. | :15:18.
brilliant. They made it the spectacle it was. The players made | :15:19. | :15:23.
the game, we made it interesting, I would have preferred a boring 1`0 | :15:24. | :15:29.
for ourselves. The fans were brilliant. For every fan heading | :15:30. | :15:36.
back north, commiserations, but the confidence the Blades have next | :15:37. | :15:40.
season, there is no doubt we have a team that will make the grade. And | :15:41. | :15:47.
take us forward to question. First half, we were better than them. They | :15:48. | :15:53.
came out, they attacked. They put 100% into the game. But we had a | :15:54. | :15:58.
good day, we enjoyed it, and everybody is happy. Almost a whole | :15:59. | :16:06.
piece without a cliche. Clearly, this bond between chairman and | :16:07. | :16:09.
manager is helping the buzz around the club. At Hillsborough, they | :16:10. | :16:22.
marched 25`year since 96 fans died during the semifinal between | :16:23. | :16:26.
Nottingham Forest and Liverpool. Tomorrow will mark 25 years to the | :16:27. | :16:30.
days since Hillsborough. There was no more poignant place to mark the | :16:31. | :16:40.
anniversary. Wreaths Were laid before the minute's silence. | :16:41. | :16:44.
Blackburn took the lead and Sheffield Wednesday equalised. But | :16:45. | :16:50.
they conceded twice more before a dramatic comeback. Two second`half | :16:51. | :16:54.
goals rescued a point of Sheffield Wednesday. Finishing three ` three. | :16:55. | :16:59.
Leeds United just below them having picked up their first win after five | :17:00. | :17:04.
straight defeats. Murphy the outstanding performer with both | :17:05. | :17:08.
goals to earn a 2`0 win against Blackpool. Chesterfield's promotion | :17:09. | :17:13.
ambitions remains in their own hands, they beat Hartlepool, 2`1. | :17:14. | :17:24.
They have a 5`point cushion in the third automatic promotion spot. York | :17:25. | :17:28.
City's play`off ambitions took a knock. The penalty was cancelled out | :17:29. | :17:34.
by a last`minute equaliser from Accrington. York are one point | :17:35. | :17:38.
behind the final play`off spot. You can see the goals from the weekend | :17:39. | :17:51.
on Lake the channel tonight. The Bradford Bulls have confirmed | :17:52. | :17:54.
they'll appeal against their six`point deduction for going into | :17:55. | :17:56.
administration. The club claims the administration happened in | :17:57. | :17:58.
circumstances that were unforeseeable and unavoidable. No | :17:59. | :18:01.
date has been set for the hearing. The Leeds Rhinos prop, Jamie | :18:02. | :18:03.
Peacock, made his 500th career appearance on Friday. He's | :18:04. | :18:07.
considered by many to be one of the best players the sport has ever | :18:08. | :18:10.
produced. He managed to score in the 42`6 win over the Wakefield | :18:11. | :18:14.
Wildcats. And he's one of the guests on tonight's Super League Show. | :18:15. | :18:15.

Yorkshire were finally bowled out for 450. Now not so long ago I met a | :18:38. | :18:51.
man who was hoping to become a world powerlifting champion. And now he | :18:52. | :18:55.
has. Ali Jawad was born with no legs and he also suffers from Crohn's | :18:56. | :18:58.
disease, but last week took the world title, and set a new World | :18:59. | :19:02.
record in Dubai. So with 100 days to go to the Commonwealth Games his | :19:03. | :19:06.
sights are firmly set on Glasgow. Yes, they are. I will use it as one | :19:07. | :19:16.
of my main thing is the year, I am looking forward to it. When we said | :19:17. | :19:21.
world champion, you said was that me? I still feel like I am dreaming. | :19:22. | :19:29.
It feels really good. What was it like when you lifted that, and a | :19:30. | :19:34.
world record? I could not believe it. I could not remember what | :19:35. | :19:38.
happened. I cannot remember what I actually did. What was it like to | :19:39. | :19:44.
get a gold medal? After the hard work I have put in, it has been | :19:45. | :19:49.
incredible. I am blessed to be here now with this. When we met before, | :19:50. | :19:57.
you spoke about Crohn's disease and how debilitating it had been. You | :19:58. | :20:01.
have it under control. How much more do you think you can do? In my | :20:02. | :20:10.
dreams, 100 kilograms. Make people realise I am one of the best. To | :20:11. | :20:17.
have the gold medal, what can it do feel soft belief? It will give me | :20:18. | :20:24.
confidence going forward. I think I could have done things better at the | :20:25. | :20:28.
World Championships. I will see them implemented at the Commonwealth | :20:29. | :20:31.
Games. The Commonwealth Games are tricky for you? For me to win a | :20:32. | :20:37.
medal will be hard. They do it on a formula that means they have the | :20:38. | :20:43.
light athletes together and so I will be against everybody else. I | :20:44. | :20:48.
could end up listing a huge world record and coming second. You will | :20:49. | :20:54.
have to be training hard. Many congratulations on getting the world | :20:55. | :20:58.
title. I am delighted for you and I have little doubt there is more to | :20:59. | :21:04.
come. If you have ever tried to cater for | :21:05. | :21:07.
a fussy eater, then you'll sympathise with folk at the | :21:08. | :21:11.
International Bird of Prey Centre in Helmsley. They're trying to tempt a | :21:12. | :21:14.
sea bird to eat fish. At first Inowashi would only eat chicken. Now | :21:15. | :21:22.
she's turning her beak up at that and only eating rats. So n her local | :21:23. | :21:33.
fish and chip shop tempt her to try their prime cod fillets. Olivia | :21:34. | :21:36.
Richwald has been to find out. At this fish and chip shop they like to | :21:37. | :21:40.
go the extra mile for their fussy customers. This is a special | :21:41. | :21:47.
customer. Only five. I love her to bits but she is a picky eater, but | :21:48. | :21:51.
very temperamental in terms of character and does not even like | :21:52. | :21:58.
fish, apparently. And this is the rare sea bird who will not eat fish | :21:59. | :22:08.
and is poisoned by salt. These birds are common in North East Asia where | :22:09. | :22:13.
they will eat salmon. Can she be tempted by a cod Philip? She has | :22:14. | :22:20.
proved a challenge. To start with sheep at the same diet as the other | :22:21. | :22:24.
birds, based on chicken and then she decided she did not want to eat | :22:25. | :22:29.
chicken ever again. We found out she is keen on eating rats. She was bred | :22:30. | :22:36.
in captivity and live smiles from the sea and has never liked fish. | :22:37. | :22:40.
But the expensive Icelandic cod seems to be working. | :22:41. | :22:45.
Stella sea eagle is `` Stella `` DCE she is quite a picky bird and has | :22:46. | :23:08.
not taken to any potential suitors. Here they are, less attractive and a | :23:09. | :23:14.
little younger. After the success today with the fish billet, perhaps | :23:15. | :23:18.
she could also be swayed to find herself a mate. | :23:19. | :23:30.
Let's have the prospects for the weather. It has been sunny. | :23:31. | :23:36.
You spoke about your little girl burning her face yesterday. | :23:37. | :23:42.
It did not feel hot. There are low ozone levels at the | :23:43. | :23:47.
moment. Many websites are saying the UV levels are low to medium but it | :23:48. | :23:54.
would be more than that. It will be cold in the morning, and we expect a | :23:55. | :23:59.
frost. I expect nice pictures over the few days as well. This was taken | :24:00. | :24:06.
yesterday. And the second picture, taken this morning. The third | :24:07. | :24:14.
picture was taken this afternoon. Please keep the pictures coming in. | :24:15. | :24:20.
We have pleasant weather to come. High pressure is dominating so it | :24:21. | :24:27.
will be cold by night and fine by day. Towards the end of the week, a | :24:28. | :24:33.
little bit more clout. A frosty start to the day tomorrow. A few | :24:34. | :24:40.
spots in the Vale of York could be freezing and we expect pockets of | :24:41. | :24:46.
air frost. It will be a fine day. Further spells of sunshine. On the | :24:47. | :24:49.
coast we have had colder temperatures, they might be a few | :24:50. | :24:56.
degrees higher in the day tomorrow. Towards the end of the week, this | :24:57. | :25:01.
weather system will push down. It will not in much rain on Thursday, | :25:02. | :25:06.
but a little bit more clout in that part of the week and into the | :25:07. | :25:12.
weekend. It has been pleasant today. Plenty of sunshine. It will also | :25:13. | :25:16.
mean that this evening temperatures will fall off rapidly. It will | :25:17. | :25:22.
quickly become chilly overnight. As we go through the night, long, clear | :25:23. | :25:29.
spells and the breeze will be light, which means there could be the light | :25:30. | :25:42.
fog batch. Ground frost in many spots but we expect it to get as low | :25:43. | :25:44.
as freezing. Tomorrow morning, a cold start to | :25:45. | :25:59.
the day. Rapidly the temperatures will rise. The sunshine is getting | :26:00. | :26:08.
stronger. Cloud will remain into the afternoon. It will be broken and | :26:09. | :26:12.
there will be further spells of sunshine. The breeze will be light. | :26:13. | :26:18.
Temperatures today got up to 13 and we expect most tomorrow. Along the | :26:19. | :26:22.
coast, where we have struggled, we might get higher temperatures than | :26:23. | :26:30.
today. Reaching around 14 degrees. And a repeat performance through | :26:31. | :26:35.
Wednesday. A cold start. Probably the highest temperatures on | :26:36. | :26:41.
Wednesday, getting up to 16 degrees. A lot of cloud around on Thursday. | :26:42. | :26:47.
It will probably be broken in a few spots. It could thicken up to | :26:48. | :26:51.
produce light rain or drizzle. Largely dry, but fairly cloudy. | :26:52. | :27:00.
I must say our daughter was not in direct sunlight for the day, but she | :27:01. | :27:08.
will have suncream on Wednesday. We will keep you up`to`date with the | :27:09. | :27:13.
latest on the developments at Kellingley Colliery. That is at 8pm | :27:14. | :27:16.
and 1025. Good night. | :27:17. | :27:19. |
