Anne Maquire just loved being a teacher. Just take a look at this.

This is the school tie, and honoured, why couldn't live deal you

the same fairness that you dealt us? Sign, the class of 2010. Today she

was killed doing the job that came naturally to her. A 15`year`old male

pupil is in custody after a fatal stabbing, arrested on suspicion of

murder. This community at Corpus Christi is a very strong one. Take a

look at this. This is what happened tonight. Hundreds paying respects to

the life of a lady who everyone says was lovely and the brilliant

teacher. Yes, of course she was a teacher, but she was more than that,

she was a friend to the whole community to stop let's just hear

the reaction of those who knew her. Everyone was extremely fond of her,

for her dedication, her love of teaching, the fact that teaching was

her vocation and she lived out her faith in the profession. She touched

many people's lives for the better, I think. And people are devastated

that this has happened. She was a beautiful person, she cared about

everybody, she cared about people not just exam results. She genuinely

did enjoy teaching. It is just shocking. Just shocking. Attacks

like this in English schools are unheard`of, and this is a good

school, Ofsted said that recently. For any teacher in the modern

society in which we live, there are dangers. Search the Internet, and

it's not difficult to find examples of violence in schools. They can be

rough places. Physical violence can erupt between pupils. Assaults on

teachers are less common but they are by no means rare. Although the

Department of Education doesn't record violent incidents in schools,

it reports the number of pupils excluded for assaulting adults. In

Yorkshire and the Humber there has been a decline in recent years. In

2009, 60 pupils were excluded for attacking staff. In 2010, that

dropped to 50. The latest figures for 2011 show a further drop to 40.

So, what is happening? Are schools seeing less violence or fewer

exclusions for violence? Patrick Murphy is from the National Union of

Teachers in Leeds and he says this level of violence is highly unusual.

The death of a teacher in service, and work, this is very rare,

fortunately. There has only been three in recent years. Even violence

against teachers is extremely rare. Serious violence, with weapons, is

extremely rare. Escalating violence in American schools has led to metal

detectors being installed. In this country, schools are permitted to

use metal detectors, and some do. Others, like this school, welcome

police officers on patrol as a way of making pupils feeing safe. Should

more schools adopt these practices? Local MP Hilary Benn cautions

against a knee jerk response. We should let the police do their work

to investigate what went on here. They will do a thorough job. Before

we draw wider conclusions. The school will now inevitably be

subject to intense scrutiny. Whether this incident is indicative of a

wider problem will need careful analysis. I was there when the first

floral tributes were made during the afternoon. Look at them now, almost

40 yards, three or four D, and this one sums up what many people are

thinking tonight. It says, to Mrs M, you registration to so many and a

Our other main story tonight ` three generations of one family `

including a nine`week`old baby girl and her two young brothers ` have

been killed in a house fire in Sheffield. The blaze in the Sharrow

area began shortly after midnight. Our reporter Ian White has more.

Neighbours laid floral tributes at the scene of the fire that has

claimed the lives of three generations of one family. While

forensics officers from South Yorkshire Police examined inside the

house, a team of officers carried out a search of the road, looking

for anything that could explain what happened. The fire broke out after

midnight and there was little anybody could do to save the

victims. The 54``year`old grandmother had tried to rescue her

family but her efforts were in vain and cost her her own life. A

20`year`old woman died, as did an nine`year old boy, and his

seven`year`old brother. A nine`week`old baby girl, so young

her parents hadn't given her a name. Everybody is shocked and devastated,

in a state of disbelief, that, in a matter of a few minutes, three

generations, five people, have just perished. It is extremely difficult

for the families. They are in a state of mourning. The children's

mother had been in the house but managed to get out, their father,

taxi driver was at work. 25 firefighters found themselves

dealing with a terrible situation. We were aware that there were family

members in the premises. They went in wearing breathing apparatus to

enable them to breed in hot and smoky environments. And

unfortunately they did find five casualties in the property. This

evening, a team of fire investigators arrived at the scene

to help the police find out what happened. Paul is here with the

weather. It has been a great start in many places, away from the coast.

This weather will bring in brain, Thursday could be particularly wet,

but a promising outlook for the bank holiday weekend.
