Anne Maquire just loved being a That's all from us. | :00:13. | :00:14.
Anne Maquire just loved being a teacher. Just take a look at this. | :00:15. | :00:18.
This is the school tie, and honoured, why couldn't live deal you | :00:19. | :00:25.
the same fairness that you dealt us? Sign, the class of 2010. Today she | :00:26. | :00:29.
was killed doing the job that came naturally to her. A 15`year`old male | :00:30. | :00:36.
pupil is in custody after a fatal stabbing, arrested on suspicion of | :00:37. | :00:41.
murder. This community at Corpus Christi is a very strong one. Take a | :00:42. | :00:46.
look at this. This is what happened tonight. Hundreds paying respects to | :00:47. | :00:52.
the life of a lady who everyone says was lovely and the brilliant | :00:53. | :00:56.
teacher. Yes, of course she was a teacher, but she was more than that, | :00:57. | :01:01.
she was a friend to the whole community to stop let's just hear | :01:02. | :01:06.
the reaction of those who knew her. Everyone was extremely fond of her, | :01:07. | :01:09.
for her dedication, her love of teaching, the fact that teaching was | :01:10. | :01:13.
her vocation and she lived out her faith in the profession. She touched | :01:14. | :01:16.
many people's lives for the better, I think. And people are devastated | :01:17. | :01:27.
that this has happened. She was a beautiful person, she cared about | :01:28. | :01:29.
everybody, she cared about people not just exam results. She genuinely | :01:30. | :01:33.
did enjoy teaching. It is just shocking. Just shocking. Attacks | :01:34. | :01:42.
like this in English schools are unheard`of, and this is a good | :01:43. | :01:48.
school, Ofsted said that recently. For any teacher in the modern | :01:49. | :01:50.
society in which we live, there are dangers. Search the Internet, and | :01:51. | :01:59.
it's not difficult to find examples of violence in schools. They can be | :02:00. | :02:02.
rough places. Physical violence can erupt between pupils. Assaults on | :02:03. | :02:11.
teachers are less common but they are by no means rare. Although the | :02:12. | :02:15.
Department of Education doesn't record violent incidents in schools, | :02:16. | :02:18.
it reports the number of pupils excluded for assaulting adults. In | :02:19. | :02:21.
Yorkshire and the Humber there has been a decline in recent years. In | :02:22. | :02:26.
2009, 60 pupils were excluded for attacking staff. In 2010, that | :02:27. | :02:30.
dropped to 50. The latest figures for 2011 show a further drop to 40. | :02:31. | :02:38.
So, what is happening? Are schools seeing less violence or fewer | :02:39. | :02:41.
exclusions for violence? Patrick Murphy is from the National Union of | :02:42. | :02:45.
Teachers in Leeds and he says this level of violence is highly unusual. | :02:46. | :02:52.
The death of a teacher in service, and work, this is very rare, | :02:53. | :02:55.
fortunately. There has only been three in recent years. Even violence | :02:56. | :03:00.
against teachers is extremely rare. Serious violence, with weapons, is | :03:01. | :03:05.
extremely rare. Escalating violence in American schools has led to metal | :03:06. | :03:12.
detectors being installed. In this country, schools are permitted to | :03:13. | :03:15.
use metal detectors, and some do. Others, like this school, welcome | :03:16. | :03:19.
police officers on patrol as a way of making pupils feeing safe. Should | :03:20. | :03:24.
more schools adopt these practices? Local MP Hilary Benn cautions | :03:25. | :03:27.
against a knee jerk response. We should let the police do their work | :03:28. | :03:31.
to investigate what went on here. They will do a thorough job. Before | :03:32. | :03:41.
we draw wider conclusions. The school will now inevitably be | :03:42. | :03:43.
subject to intense scrutiny. Whether this incident is indicative of a | :03:44. | :03:46.
wider problem will need careful analysis. I was there when the first | :03:47. | :03:58.
floral tributes were made during the afternoon. Look at them now, almost | :03:59. | :04:05.
40 yards, three or four D, and this one sums up what many people are | :04:06. | :04:10.
thinking tonight. It says, to Mrs M, you registration to so many and a | :04:11. | :04:13.
fantastic teacher, even after 30 years, my good friend. The class of | :04:14. | :04:23.
1983`86. Anderson, heaven has gained an angel `` and this one, heaven has | :04:24. | :04:34.
gained an angel, Mr I so many. `` missed by so many. BBC Newsnight | :04:35. | :04:42.
will have more on this story and the dangers facing teachers on BBC Two. | :04:43. | :04:45.
Our other main story tonight ` three generations of one family ` | :04:46. | :04:48.
including a nine`week`old baby girl and her two young brothers ` have | :04:49. | :04:52.
been killed in a house fire in Sheffield. The blaze in the Sharrow | :04:53. | :04:55.
area began shortly after midnight. Our reporter Ian White has more. | :04:56. | :04:58.
Neighbours laid floral tributes at the scene of the fire that has | :04:59. | :05:01.
claimed the lives of three generations of one family. While | :05:02. | :05:03.
forensics officers from South Yorkshire Police examined inside the | :05:04. | :05:06.
house, a team of officers carried out a search of the road, looking | :05:07. | :05:10.
for anything that could explain what happened. The fire broke out after | :05:11. | :05:13.
midnight and there was little anybody could do to save the | :05:14. | :05:17.
victims. The 54``year`old grandmother had tried to rescue her | :05:18. | :05:21.
family but her efforts were in vain and cost her her own life. A | :05:22. | :05:24.
20`year`old woman died, as did an nine`year old boy, and his | :05:25. | :05:32.
seven`year`old brother. A nine`week`old baby girl, so young | :05:33. | :05:38.
her parents hadn't given her a name. Everybody is shocked and devastated, | :05:39. | :05:42.
in a state of disbelief, that, in a matter of a few minutes, three | :05:43. | :05:46.
generations, five people, have just perished. It is extremely difficult | :05:47. | :05:54.
for the families. They are in a state of mourning. The children's | :05:55. | :06:01.
mother had been in the house but managed to get out, their father, | :06:02. | :06:06.
taxi driver was at work. 25 firefighters found themselves | :06:07. | :06:10.
dealing with a terrible situation. We were aware that there were family | :06:11. | :06:14.
members in the premises. They went in wearing breathing apparatus to | :06:15. | :06:19.
enable them to breed in hot and smoky environments. And | :06:20. | :06:23.
unfortunately they did find five casualties in the property. This | :06:24. | :06:29.
evening, a team of fire investigators arrived at the scene | :06:30. | :06:32.
to help the police find out what happened. Paul is here with the | :06:33. | :06:43.
weather. It has been a great start in many places, away from the coast. | :06:44. | :06:49.
This weather will bring in brain, Thursday could be particularly wet, | :06:50. | :06:53.
but a promising outlook for the bank holiday weekend. | :06:54. | :06:58.
That low cloud extending inland. We see temperatures down to around | :06:59. | :07:06.
seven Celsius. It will be great on Tuesday morning. That mist and fog | :07:07. | :07:10.
will break up, to bring some nice sunny spells for Tuesday afternoon, | :07:11. | :07:17.
but the coast, prone to further low cloud pushing in from the North Sea. | :07:18. | :07:22.
Quite warm for late April, 17 Celsius. A similar forecast | :07:23. | :07:27.
Wednesday, with a few showers, but first they will turn particularly | :07:28. | :07:32.
wet. I will leave you with summary, and then the national weather. | :07:33. | :07:37.
holiday weekend. Hello, I am going to throw some | :07:38. | :07:43.
numbers at you first of all. 22 Celsius was the temperature recorded | :07:44. | :07:46.
at Aviemore making it the warmest day of the year so far. At the other | :07:47. | :07:51.
end of the country, this cloud has produced a lot of heavy and thundery | :07:52. | :07:56.
downpours. A lot of rain falling in | :07:57. | :07:57. |
