connection with a murdering Belfast back in the 1970s. That is all from | :00:00. | 3:59:59
the BBC News Good evening. Welcome to the | :00:00. | :00:00.
programme. On tonight's Look North: "A shining light". Teacher Ann | :00:07. | :00:09.
Maguire's family pay tribute to her as a schoolboy appears in court | :00:10. | :00:12.
charged with her murder. Also tonight: The woman from | :00:13. | :00:16.
Sheffield found guilty of using drink and drugs to lure young girls | :00:17. | :00:21.
into a life of prostitution. And treacherous terrain. Swaledale | :00:22. | :00:24.
Mountain Rescue gets ready for the influx of thousands of Tour De | :00:25. | :00:51.
France visitors. In a. It has been a grey day. Join me for the details. | :00:52. | :00:54.
The family of a Yorkshire teacher who was stabbed to death in her | :00:55. | :00:58.
classroom have paid an emotional visit to the school to see the | :00:59. | :01:01.
hundreds of messages and flowers left in her memory. Ann Maguire had | :01:02. | :01:05.
been a teacher for forty years at Corpus Christi College in Leeds, but | :01:06. | :01:08.
was killed just months before she was due to retire. Today her husband | :01:09. | :01:12.
and daughters described her as a "shining light" who "brightened the | :01:13. | :01:14.
world". Earlier a fifteen`year`old boy appeared at Leeds Youth Court, | :01:15. | :01:18.
accused of her killing. Our crime correspondent, John Cundy, reports. | :01:19. | :01:21.
A college and community's display of love and affection, made clear today | :01:22. | :01:25.
to the family of Ann Maguire. Widower Donald and daughters Emma | :01:26. | :01:28.
and Kerry saw the moving tributes for themselves. A father and his | :01:29. | :01:33.
daughters hand`in`hand as they remembered a beloved wife and | :01:34. | :01:39.
mother. The family made a visit to the church, which has been an | :01:40. | :01:43.
important focus in the last few days. On Monday evening, as you | :01:44. | :01:48.
know, we had at one stage 600 people there to remember Ann. The family | :01:49. | :01:55.
issued their first statement today since Ann Maguire's tragic death. | :01:56. | :01:57.
They said: The day for the family had begun | :01:58. | :02:31.
with a two`minute hearing in the Leeds Youth Court. The 15`year`old | :02:32. | :02:34.
schoolboy accused of the murder was remanded in custody to appear at the | :02:35. | :02:39.
Crown Court tomorrow. Also tomorrow, there will be a one`minute silence | :02:40. | :02:46.
for Ann before a Wigan rugby game. Ann was born in Wigan. God knows | :02:47. | :02:51.
what is going through her family's minds. It is a tragedy. If we can | :02:52. | :03:01.
show any level of respect and recognition about what has gone on, | :03:02. | :03:07.
I am sure that we will do our best. This afternoon, a consoling arm from | :03:08. | :03:10.
the priest as Ann Maguire's family quietly walk away from the scene of | :03:11. | :03:14.
the many tributes to the much loved teacher. | :03:15. | :03:21.
A twenty`three`year`old woman from Sheffield who used drugs and alcohol | :03:22. | :03:24.
to lure vulnerable girls into prostitution has been found guilty | :03:25. | :03:28.
of running a child sex ring. Amanda Spencer used the money to fund her | :03:29. | :03:33.
own drug and alcohol addictions. Three men accused of related | :03:34. | :03:36.
offences have been cleared by a jury at Sheffield Crown Court. Kate | :03:37. | :03:43.
Bradbrook is there for us this evening. Kate, what is the | :03:44. | :03:50.
background to this? Amanda Spencer, and 23 years old, | :03:51. | :03:57.
was from a troubled background. She started to drink and take drugs at | :03:58. | :04:04.
an early age. When she was 16, she started to befriend young girls in | :04:05. | :04:10.
Sheffield. She gave them drugs and alcohol and was a shoulder for them | :04:11. | :04:14.
to cry on. Many of them were from chaotic backgrounds, like she was. | :04:15. | :04:20.
She would force them into prostitution and then she would take | :04:21. | :04:24.
the money for drink and drugs. Her youngest victim was only 13 years | :04:25. | :04:31.
old. We have heard harrowing accounts from these victims. They | :04:32. | :04:36.
said they were too frightened to go to the police. | :04:37. | :04:45.
What happened in court today? Spencer was charged with offences | :04:46. | :04:50.
relating to prostitution. She was found guilty of 16 offences and was | :04:51. | :04:57.
cleared from seven. There are another 15 charges outstanding that | :04:58. | :05:02.
the jury need to decide about. Three men have been cleared of related | :05:03. | :05:07.
offences today. Another man has been found guilty of two sexual assaults. | :05:08. | :05:13.
The jury will continue their deliberations tomorrow. The judge | :05:14. | :05:19.
said he will accept a majority verdict. Spencer could be sentenced | :05:20. | :05:31.
tomorrow afternoon. Later on Look North: Morrisons | :05:32. | :05:34.
unveils what it's calling the biggest price cut in a decade. | :05:35. | :05:43.
In other news now: Network Rail has apologised to the family of a little | :05:44. | :05:47.
girl who died when the car that she was in was hit by a train on a level | :05:48. | :05:52.
crossing near Doncaster. An inquest into the death of four`year`old Emma | :05:53. | :05:54.
Lifsey from North Lincolnshire concluded her death last December | :05:55. | :05:57.
was an accident. But the assistant coroner says the warning lights at | :05:58. | :06:00.
the crossing were not bright enough. Taxpayers face the prospect of | :06:01. | :06:03.
funding compensation claims by victims of the late Jimmy Savile | :06:04. | :06:06.
should money from his estate run out. So far more than 140 people | :06:07. | :06:10.
have come forward to claim they were assaulted by him. The current value | :06:11. | :06:14.
of his estate is put at ?3.3 million. Health Minister Norman | :06:15. | :06:17.
Lamb, said if those funds were exhausted pay`outs would have to | :06:18. | :06:23.
come from the public purse. As fire fighters across Yorkshire | :06:24. | :06:26.
prepare for more strike action this weekend, West Yorkshire Fire and | :06:27. | :06:29.
Rescue say they can't guarantee the same level of service that helped | :06:30. | :06:32.
save a number of buildings in Leeds last month. A hundred fire fighters | :06:33. | :06:38.
tackled a huge blaze on an industrial estate in Armley. The | :06:39. | :06:41.
Tradpak building was destroyed, but several others were saved. There is | :06:42. | :06:46.
a warning that with only half the usual cover available, that might | :06:47. | :06:51.
not be possible this weekend. I ensure that we will cope. The | :06:52. | :06:59.
problem will be if there are any large incidence. There were three, | :07:00. | :07:07.
four, or five buildings that were saved by the prompt actions of the | :07:08. | :07:10.
Fire Service. Well, members of the Fire Brigades | :07:11. | :07:13.
Union will strike tomorrow between noon and five, and will take action | :07:14. | :07:19.
again on Saturday and Sunday. The government says fire fighters have | :07:20. | :07:22.
one of the most generous pension schemes in the public sector and is | :07:23. | :07:26.
calling the strike "unnecessary". The Labour Party has become the | :07:27. | :07:29.
latest to launch its local council and European Parliament election | :07:30. | :07:31.
campaign for Yorkshire. Senior politicians and activists gathered | :07:32. | :07:35.
in Dewsbury for the start of what it says is the fight to overcome a cost | :07:36. | :07:38.
of living crisis. Our political editor, Len Tingle, was there. | :07:39. | :07:46.
What are the most common issues that are raised? Labour chose to launch | :07:47. | :07:49.
their election campaign at a Dewsbury housing association. Their | :07:50. | :07:52.
flagship new policy out today ` to curb the cost of finding and renting | :07:53. | :07:56.
affordable housing. That is part of a manifesto that they say will help | :07:57. | :07:59.
people who are not benefiting from the UK's recent economic growth. | :08:00. | :08:03.
There are still too many people in this country who are facing a cost | :08:04. | :08:07.
of living crisis. You only have to listen to people here today to | :08:08. | :08:10.
realise the extent of that crisis and how important it is that we take | :08:11. | :08:17.
steps to address it. We cannot afford to let this government off | :08:18. | :08:20.
the hook... It is not just local council elections being contested. | :08:21. | :08:26.
Outside Dewsbury Town Hall, activists and supporters were joined | :08:27. | :08:29.
by Labour's candidates for the European Parliament elections ` | :08:30. | :08:32.
which will be held on the same day. Labour has done well over the past | :08:33. | :08:36.
few years at local government level. They have taken control of Sheffield | :08:37. | :08:42.
and Leeds. They go into this election only one seat short of | :08:43. | :08:45.
controlling Bradford. But at the European elections last time around, | :08:46. | :08:48.
it was a disaster. They came second in the polls for the first time and | :08:49. | :08:52.
they were down to just one seat. They are hoping to do much better | :08:53. | :08:56.
this time. Polling day is in exactly three weeks, on Thursday, 22 May. | :08:57. | :09:00.
BBC Look North, Dewsbury. And more information on the parties and | :09:01. | :09:04.
candidates can be found on the BBC's Election 2014 website. | :09:05. | :09:13.
It is being touted as the biggest price cut by a supermarket in a | :09:14. | :09:16.
decade. Today Bradford`based Morrisons announced they were | :09:17. | :09:19.
discounting over a thousand items in a bid to win back shoppers. It is a | :09:20. | :09:24.
bold move but is it enough? Here is our business correspondent Danni | :09:25. | :09:31.
Hewson. There is no denying that the last | :09:32. | :09:35.
few years has been tough for Morrisons. Sales have fallen and | :09:36. | :09:41.
shopper numbers have dwindled. Their campaigns have fallen short. Now | :09:42. | :09:45.
they are gambling that cutting prices will result in dividends. My | :09:46. | :09:51.
job is to make sure that the business is good for the future. We | :09:52. | :09:58.
used to have antiquated systems and we have been diligently working to | :09:59. | :10:07.
update this. We will have 200 shops by the end of this year. We are also | :10:08. | :10:13.
going online. We are modernising our systems will stop the next step is | :10:14. | :10:20.
to make sure that we offer the best value and that is what we are doing | :10:21. | :10:28.
today. Price is the battle ground. More people are turning to discount | :10:29. | :10:34.
stores and markets. The cost of food has risen by 10% between 2007 and | :10:35. | :10:46.
2012. Do people think Morrisons are on the right path? Yes I do. | :10:47. | :10:51.
Everyone should be lowering prices. I like nice, fresh bid. I shop at | :10:52. | :11:09.
Waitrose. `` fresh food. Smack has a lot of ground to make up. ASDA has | :11:10. | :11:16.
lower prices. And others questioned whether price is the answer. Time | :11:17. | :11:21.
will tell what the consumer wants. When you look at the economy, it is | :11:22. | :11:29.
getting better. People are perhaps not as price conscious as they were | :11:30. | :11:36.
18 months ago. Will it work? If it does, they may not have to worry | :11:37. | :11:45.
about the shoppers of tomorrow. This is Easter, a foal abandoned by | :11:46. | :11:49.
the road in Leeds. He has been rescued by an animal centre and now | :11:50. | :12:01.
he needs a surrogate mum Next tonight: There are just over two | :12:02. | :12:05.
months to go until the biggest bike ride in the world arrives here in | :12:06. | :12:07.
Yorkshire. And fewer people can be busier than | :12:08. | :12:11.
Nicky Roche, at the moment. She is the chief executive of the Tour de | :12:12. | :12:14.
France Hub, which is in charge of planning the logistics behind the | :12:15. | :12:18.
Grand Depart. And we will be hearing from them regularly over the next | :12:19. | :12:23.
few weeks. But first Yorkshire's hosting of the Grand Depart this | :12:24. | :12:27.
summer will provide a global stage for many of the region's most | :12:28. | :12:30.
beautiful, and dramatic, landscapes. But the rugged beauty of places like | :12:31. | :12:33.
the Dales brings its own challenges. Our Tour de France correspondent, | :12:34. | :12:36.
Matt Slater, reports from Swaledale where the emergency rescue team has | :12:37. | :12:39.
been preparing for any mishaps on the day. | :12:40. | :12:41.
Damp days in the Dales are nothing new. Yorkshire has been living with | :12:42. | :12:45.
water ever since the ice age and yet still it comes ` creating holes in | :12:46. | :12:49.
the limestone, like those that give Cliff Gate Road its other name, | :12:50. | :12:52.
Buttertubs Pass. Farmers used to keep their butter down there in the | :12:53. | :12:55.
summer, but this July these potholes could provide a real headache for | :12:56. | :13:04.
somebody. It is not the bikers, it will be the spectators. What we have | :13:05. | :13:10.
particularly looked at is someone falling down one of the dozen holes. | :13:11. | :13:15.
The mountain rescue team are volunteers who get called out 25 | :13:16. | :13:19.
times a year, usually to help hurt hikers and wayward walkers. But they | :13:20. | :13:26.
have never seen a crowd as big as the one that is expected for the | :13:27. | :13:30.
Tour de France. They have been out staging a dress rehearsal for a | :13:31. | :13:34.
drama they hope no one will ever see. Once we have practised it a | :13:35. | :13:38.
couple of times, we will do it at a faster tempo as if we were doing it | :13:39. | :13:43.
for real on the day. Practice makes perfect. That is exactly what we are | :13:44. | :13:49.
doing now. There could be as many as 50,000 people along the road | :13:50. | :13:52.
cheering on Sir Bradley Wiggins and others on the 5th of July. Making | :13:53. | :14:02.
sure that everyone goes home safe is the priority. We want people to | :14:03. | :14:05.
enjoy themselves, but take care. There is no need to go close to the | :14:06. | :14:09.
edges. You can see that the ground is rough and there are some real | :14:10. | :14:13.
hazards ` some caverns, some caves, and some steep ground. The message | :14:14. | :14:16.
is clear. Enjoy the day, but mind the gaps. This is a beauty spot you | :14:17. | :14:25.
do not want to visit. Well joining us now is Nicky Roche, chief | :14:26. | :14:29.
executive of the Tour de France Hub. A big job ahead ` what are the key | :14:30. | :14:33.
challenges for you with two months to go? It is making sure that | :14:34. | :14:41.
everyone is ready. We are expecting large numbers of people from all | :14:42. | :14:46.
over the world. It is a fantastic opportunity for the region and we | :14:47. | :14:51.
want to make sure that everyone is putting their best foot forward. We | :14:52. | :15:04.
are putting information online. This information is for people who are | :15:05. | :15:09.
related to the Tour de France, but also people who need to know how | :15:10. | :15:12.
they will be affected for business reasons. We saw there an iconic | :15:13. | :15:16.
beauty spot, Buttertubs. How worried are you that too many people will | :15:17. | :15:19.
turn up to places like this, creating a nightmare for police and | :15:20. | :15:25.
emergency services? We are working with the local services to make sure | :15:26. | :15:32.
that we know how these large clouds `` clouds can be accommodated. It is | :15:33. | :15:39.
all about details. We are working as a team. When people ask what it was | :15:40. | :15:54.
like, they will think it was Yorkshire and the UK and did we not | :15:55. | :16:08.
do a good job. Look at all the people on the held. `` hill. There | :16:09. | :16:28.
is a maximum capacity and the roads will be closed in the morning. We | :16:29. | :16:32.
will be watching it very carefully to make sure that we are not | :16:33. | :16:40.
overcrowding local areas. Do you think you might have two turn people | :16:41. | :16:48.
away? We will have to redirect people. There are different places | :16:49. | :16:53.
that you can watch along the route. The tour runs over several hours, so | :16:54. | :17:00.
you might want to go to one part and then go to the pub, and then go to | :17:01. | :17:10.
another part. A lot of concerns too about road closures. Can you clear | :17:11. | :17:14.
this up for us? If you live on the route, when can you expect roads to | :17:15. | :17:19.
be closed by? Local authorities are telling people when the roads will | :17:20. | :17:23.
be closed. That is getting sharper and sharper in terms of when exactly | :17:24. | :17:33.
it will be. The expectation is that the roads will be closed to vehicles | :17:34. | :17:39.
on Friday and then after the tour begins to run, cyclists will also | :17:40. | :17:45.
not be able to use the roads as we will need it for the race. Anne | :17:46. | :17:50.
MacGregor got in touch. She runs a vet practice and says: As the roads | :17:51. | :17:53.
will be closed our clients will not be able to reach us, so at present | :17:54. | :17:58.
we have no idea as to how we are going to cover the emergency service | :17:59. | :18:01.
we provide. What do you say to businesses like that? We are | :18:02. | :18:08.
planning for that. People need to contact your local authority and | :18:09. | :18:13.
there will be information there about how they can operate emergency | :18:14. | :18:22.
services. Life comes first. Also, Alex Murray asks: What will a | :18:23. | :18:25.
successful Grand Depart look like on Monday morning after race leaves | :18:26. | :18:31.
Yorkshire? If you are going, please take your rubbish home with you and | :18:32. | :18:39.
use the bends. Let us have a bit of action from | :18:40. | :18:42.
last night's football now. Halifax Town have a goal up their sleeves, | :18:43. | :18:46.
for the second leg of their play`off semifinal at Cambridge on Sunday. | :18:47. | :18:49.
And you never know, it might be enough. In last night's first leg at | :18:50. | :18:53.
the Shay, they edged out Cambridge by 1`0. It came from this penalty by | :18:54. | :18:57.
Lee Gregory, just seven minutes from time, after a foul on Matty Pearson. | :18:58. | :19:00.
But stopping Cambridge from scoring last night may prove just as | :19:01. | :19:02.
valuable! We will take the 1`0, one more clean | :19:03. | :19:06.
sheet and then we are on our way. Are you thinking about Wembley | :19:07. | :19:11.
already? No. Yes, I am. No. I am just thinking about a clean sheet | :19:12. | :19:14.
again. We have had a lot recently. We have defended fantastically. We | :19:15. | :19:20.
are in everything. We can score goals. We are going to go down | :19:21. | :19:24.
there, we are not going to defend, we are going to try to score again ` | :19:25. | :19:27.
which we can. Barnsley has a rich heritage when it | :19:28. | :19:31.
comes to cricketers. There is Geoffrey Boycott, Darren Gough, | :19:32. | :19:33.
Martyn Moxon, and Katherine Brunt to name but a few. Don't forget Dickie | :19:34. | :19:38.
Bird or we will be in real trouble! Now there are some new stars on the | :19:39. | :19:41.
horizon. The under`13's cricket team from Horizon Community College are | :19:42. | :19:44.
off to Lords for tomorrow's final of the Lady Taverners Competition. | :19:45. | :19:49.
Tanya has the details. I just love cricket. This team that we are in, | :19:50. | :19:55.
everyone encourages each other and we are such a good team. So good, | :19:56. | :20:00.
that they are in the final five of a competition that around 750 teams | :20:01. | :20:04.
started out in. I hope that we win, it would be good if we win. It will | :20:05. | :20:11.
be a good opportunity. We are really excited because we were so close | :20:12. | :20:15.
last time and we are here this time so it is even more special. Last | :20:16. | :20:20.
year, they fell at the final hurdle ` pipped to the North of England | :20:21. | :20:23.
spot by a team from Lancashire. But this time, the home of cricket | :20:24. | :20:27.
beckons. I have played cricket all my life and I have coached for the | :20:28. | :20:32.
last few years and I have never been to Lords. I am not sure if some of | :20:33. | :20:36.
the girls realise how big it is. Tomorrow, they certainly will. | :20:37. | :20:45.
Staff at an animal rescue centre are appealing for help to raise a | :20:46. | :20:48.
two`week`old baby. Easter, the foal, was found near the White Rose Centre | :20:49. | :20:52.
in Leeds. He had been abandoned at just one day old. But there's a | :20:53. | :20:56.
happy ending to this one, as Danny Carpenter reports. | :20:57. | :21:00.
There is nothing quite so cute as a baby, no matter what the species. | :21:01. | :21:04.
But Easter obviously did not appeal to his original owners. At just | :21:05. | :21:09.
one`day`old, he was abandoned by the roadside and left to die. He was | :21:10. | :21:13.
taken by police to Hope Pastures where they are trying to keep him | :21:14. | :21:17.
alive. In the absence of Easter's mum, 21`year`old Danny has to be the | :21:18. | :21:24.
daddy. Feeds are hourly. With fellow volunteer Sophie, they have been | :21:25. | :21:27.
caring for the foul around the clock. He is worth it. He is | :21:28. | :21:33.
absolutely lovely and we love him to bits. If he can grow up to be a | :21:34. | :21:37.
horse that lives for 30 years and has a happy life, a couple of months | :21:38. | :21:41.
of our time is so small in comparison to the life he might | :21:42. | :21:45.
have. They are hoping to find a brood mare for him. Tilly here is | :21:46. | :21:49.
keen to foster him, but he really needs a mother's milk. What he needs | :21:50. | :21:53.
is a horsey friend to teach him how to be a horse. Tilly is very | :21:54. | :21:58.
maternal and has taken a shine to him, so we're hoping that she can | :21:59. | :22:03.
mother him. From a desperate first`day, through a difficult two | :22:04. | :22:06.
weeks, Easter is already defying the odds. And who now would bet against | :22:07. | :22:10.
him making it through. Things are starting to look good. Danny | :22:11. | :22:25.
Carpenter, BBC Look North. Now it is time to get the weather. | :22:26. | :22:41.
There were bad storms yesterday. This picture was taken at 7pm. Here | :22:42. | :23:01.
is another photograph from Leeds. This one is from Sheffield. But look | :23:02. | :23:19.
how beautiful dresses. `` this is. Let us look outside. The rain is | :23:20. | :23:30.
just stopping in Leeds, temperatures five Celsius. But the good news is | :23:31. | :23:38.
that better weather is on the way. Tomorrow, the cloud will break and | :23:39. | :23:48.
there will be some sunshine. The sunshine will follow. Saturday will | :23:49. | :23:56.
be a beautiful day. That should last for the whole bank holiday weekend. | :23:57. | :24:01.
Perhaps on Sunday there will be a little bit of rain, but other than | :24:02. | :24:12.
that it looks nice. There is some mess and fog over the hills | :24:13. | :24:27.
tonight. `` mist. The lowest temperatures, five Celsius. The sun | :24:28. | :24:36.
will rise in the morning at these times. A slow start in the morning, | :24:37. | :24:45.
but breaks will soon arrive in North Yorkshire and filter southwards. The | :24:46. | :24:53.
afternoon looks pleasant. Some good sunny spells. There will be a cold | :24:54. | :25:05.
breeze along the coast. But quite pleasant and the sunshine. `` in the | :25:06. | :25:24.
sunshine. We cannot blame the weatherman when the weather is not | :25:25. | :25:25.
good. That is all from us. Goodbye. 'The last two generations have been | :25:26. | :25:52.
robbed of an opportunity 'And yet it has greater impact | :25:53. | :25:55.
on our everyday lives than anything 'We need to put this issue | :25:56. | :26:00.
to bed now, 'and not leave it | :26:01. | :26:03.
for another generation.' I want a Britain that is free | :26:04. | :26:05.
to control its own destiny. | :26:06. | :26:10. |
