Good evening and welcome to Look North. First tonight, a rally's

taken place over planned housing developments in a West Yorkshire

town. One of the applications is to build 34 new houses. Campaigners say

they're literally in their backyard and they're ready for a fight.

Shirley Henry reports. What do we want? Green fields. When do we want

them? Now. Hundreds of Mirfield residents took

to the streets this lunchtime. They're campaigning against plans to

build more than 300 homes. They say one of the plans could see homes

being built literally in their back yard.

These properties will be looking directly into our conservatory, our

bedroom and our living room. The plan itself is incomplete, it's

obscure, it's inaccurate and more important it's not compliant with

the council's very own policy, BE12. Developers plan to build 34 new

houses on meadow land at Kitson Hill. On the BE12 policy, 21 metres,

that's about two double`decker buses is the minimum acceptable distance

between houses. But the plan shows this house will be less than three

metres away from two new garages. In a statement, the council said:

The need to build houses in Kirklees supersedes compliance with their

very own policies. We believe that is a very dangerous

precedent. What do we want? Green fields.

Kirklees Council has referred the application to senior officers.

A politics expert has told the BBC that cuts in local council spending

have led to a reduction in the number and the quality of candidates

for the council elections being held on Thursday. Alan McGauley also told

the Sunday Politics programme for Yorkshire and Lincolnshire that

local government as we know it is finished.

The challenges are immense for politicians. What we've seen also is

very few people want to take up that challenge. Not every seat in South

Yorkshire's being contested now which is almost unheard of in recent

times. Why would people want to take a seat on a council to then be

responsible for butchering council services on behalf of central

government? Local government as we know it is probably finished. We're

going to see outsourcing through companies. We're going to also see a

role for the third sector, the voluntary sector.

Police are growing increasingly concerned for a man who has been

missing from his home in York for two days. Mandeep Ahluwalia, who is

41, disappeared from his house in Heworth on Friday. Officers say they

are particularly concerned because he left without cash or bank cards.

On to sport. It's not been a good weekend for our rugby union teams.

Last night, Rotherham Titans threw away an eight point lead as they

lost their Championship play`off semi final. Today, Leeds Carnegie

were in action in their own semi final second leg. And it was bad

news for Leeds as well I'm afraid. They had a seven point lead from the

first leg. This try from Charlie Beech put them ahead this afternoon

but two late tries for London Welsh meant Leeds went down by 60`58 on

aggregate. And it's been a big weekend in Super

League. All the teams decamped to Manchester City's Etihad Stadium for

what's known as the Magic Weekend. Well, Leeds lost to Wigan last night

but stay top after St Helen's lost this afternoon. Castleford are still

in fourth. They thrashed West Yorkshire rivals Wakefield Wildcats

50`12. Daryl Clark opened and closed the scoring for the Tigers, who had

a stunning first half going in ahead 22`0. And in the other West

Yorkshire derby Bradford were beaten 54`16. The Bulls remain second from

bottom. An ancient Hare Krishna festival has

taken place in Sheffield this afternoon. The Rathayatra, otherwise

known as the chariot festival, began with a procession from the Moor and

finished with a carnival in Broomhall. The festival originated

in India and dates back over 2,000 years. It's the first time it's been

held in Sheffield. Today is a celebration of the lord's

appearance in this world. In this day and age, temple worship or

church worship is becoming less and less popular. As you'll see from the

structure of this beautiful chariot, it's like a temple on wheels with

the deity of the lord, he comes out on this chariot. So when people

don't any longer come to see him, he comes out to see everyone.

You have had a glorious weather this afternoon. Then some dying hours of

sunshine to enjoy that then there is changes on the way.

It has been glorious today. Parts of Yorkshire reached 24 degrees. This

evening, it is they mostly dry. There will be plenty of clear skies

and some cloud around but it'll be a mild night. Temperatures falling

back to around 12 Celsius. The winds are light as his Monday morning.

Some cloud around, bright spells further north but as you go through

the day we will see one or two showers developing over the tops of

the Pennines. Most of staying temperatures getting to highs of

around 22 Celsius. As a get into Tuesday, things become more

unsettled. A dry morning the two will see show was by Tuesday

afternoon. Still warm but turning cooler as we head into Wednesday. We

2013. It goes without saying that it is going to be a warm night. Look
