getting to Europe illegally. More than 40,000 have made the journey so | :00:00. | 3:59:59
Coming up on tonight's programme: far this | :00:00. | :00:08.
Hundreds of people gather in Sheffield to pay respect to a World | :00:09. | :00:12.
People came from far and wide after a public appeal. | :00:13. | :00:16.
A Wakefield family whose children died | :00:17. | :00:21.
on holiday are granted legal aid for an inquest into their deaths. | :00:22. | :00:24.
And could One Direction's Louis Tomlinson be in talks to be | :00:25. | :00:27.
And saw the best of the sunshine today. Will there be more over the | :00:28. | :00:38.
weekend? First tonight, at least 500 people | :00:39. | :00:47.
have attended the funeral of a Sheffield war veteran after hearing | :00:48. | :00:50.
he had no family and few surviving George Thompson died 16 days ago | :00:51. | :00:54.
in a care home in Sheffield, but his story captured the imagination | :00:55. | :01:00.
of hundreds of people who made the They have come from far and wide, | :01:01. | :01:17.
moved by the story of a veteran with no family and few surviving friends | :01:18. | :01:23.
to bid him farewell. His neighbours had feared no one would mourn George | :01:24. | :01:29.
Thompson. How wrong they were. I think he would have been absolutely | :01:30. | :01:38.
overwhelmed by it. He was a fairly quiet, ordinary guy. He would be | :01:39. | :01:44.
staggered at the turnout today. His matinee idol eyes look at us from a | :01:45. | :01:50.
past generation. This is George Thompson, a World War II pilot who | :01:51. | :01:55.
joined the RAF at the age of 24. Life expectancy in one of the | :01:56. | :02:00.
world's `` war's most dangerous jobs was for two six weeks. But he | :02:01. | :02:07.
survived and died on May the 14th aged 96. His local RAF Association | :02:08. | :02:14.
were told of his death and did their best to ensure a decent funeral. We | :02:15. | :02:21.
had no idea it was going to escalate as it has done. We were expecting to | :02:22. | :02:28.
possibly get 25 or 30 people, something of that sort. But, of | :02:29. | :02:36.
course, it has gone global. If it was not for the likes of George and | :02:37. | :02:40.
others like him, who knows what we would be like. Who knows what | :02:41. | :02:46.
language we would be speaking. I am thankful to him and to those who are | :02:47. | :02:53.
not here today. It is easy to understand why members of the armed | :02:54. | :02:57.
services would take the time to come to Sheffield, but why civilians? | :02:58. | :03:03.
What has touched them? I buried my father for months ago and he was an | :03:04. | :03:09.
old soldier and he was `` there was hardly anyone for his funeral and I | :03:10. | :03:12.
didn't want it to be the same for this gentleman. We want to pay our | :03:13. | :03:22.
respects. The service was packed, respectful and heartfelt. Many | :03:23. | :03:27.
well`wishers waited outside, sparing a half`hour to think of what a | :03:28. | :03:32.
stranger did for them and perhaps what they could do for a stranger. | :03:33. | :03:39.
A lovely story. The parents of two children | :03:40. | :03:43.
from Wakefield who died on holiday in Corfu have today won their long | :03:44. | :03:46.
battle to be granted legal aid Bobby and Christi Shepherd died | :03:47. | :03:49.
from carbon monoxide poisoning Their families took | :03:50. | :03:53.
their fight all the way to Downing Street ` and today the Government | :03:54. | :03:57.
announced a change of heart. It has been almost eight years since | :03:58. | :04:11.
Christi and Bobby Shepherd went on a half term holiday and never came | :04:12. | :04:17.
home. They were staying on a villa on the Greek island of Corfu when | :04:18. | :04:20.
they started to complain of feeling sick and dizzy. Halfway through the | :04:21. | :04:25.
trip, the children went to sleep and never woke up. Their parents have | :04:26. | :04:29.
been fighting for answers ever since. The pain that you suffer and | :04:30. | :04:34.
the way it changes your life never ever goes away. To think that | :04:35. | :04:38.
nothing came of their deaths would just be horrendous. The children | :04:39. | :04:46.
died in 2006. A faulty gas boiler was identified as because. In 2010, | :04:47. | :04:52.
holiday operator Thomas Cook and two of its ribs were cleared of `` | :04:53. | :04:58.
cleared of blame but three of the hotel staff were convicted of | :04:59. | :05:03.
manslaughter by negligence and sentenced to seven years in jail in | :05:04. | :05:10.
total. Thomas Cook was given a reported ?1 million in compensation | :05:11. | :05:17.
last year by the hotel chain. " in Sheffield will be the first time the | :05:18. | :05:23.
story has been investigated in the UK. Legal aid was initially refused | :05:24. | :05:30.
but with the help of their MP, they took their fight to the Prime | :05:31. | :05:35.
Minister and today came the news that they had won. This is a | :05:36. | :05:39.
stunning victory and this highlighted the witnesses `` the | :05:40. | :05:44.
weaknesses in the European holiday industry. The inquest will be a | :05:45. | :05:50.
landmark inquest and we should seize the top change right across Europe | :05:51. | :05:55.
so that no other family experiences such a tragedy. In a statement, | :05:56. | :06:02.
Sharon would thank those who had helped her family saying, legal | :06:03. | :06:07.
representation at the inquest will help us have the chance to hear the | :06:08. | :06:11.
truth of what happened on that awful day when we lost our children. Neal | :06:12. | :06:17.
Shepherd said, a fair inquest is now achievable and this decision will | :06:18. | :06:21.
insure Christi and Bobby did not die in vain. | :06:22. | :06:24.
A woman from Leeds who fears her daughters | :06:25. | :06:27.
will be subjected to female genital mutilation in Nigeria won't be | :06:28. | :06:29.
deported for at least another day, according to friends of the family. | :06:30. | :06:33.
Afusat Saliu, who's 31, was due to be sent back to her home | :06:34. | :06:36.
country last night, along with her two young daughters. | :06:37. | :06:39.
She was arrested by border agency staff on Wednesday. | :06:40. | :06:41.
A social media campaign to keep her in the UK continues and her lawyers | :06:42. | :06:45.
Two groups hoping to revive the former Odeon building | :06:46. | :06:50.
in Bradford have handed their plans to the council. | :06:51. | :06:53.
The landmark building, which is owned by the council, | :06:54. | :06:55.
has been derelict since it closed its doors in 2000. | :06:56. | :06:58.
Rival groups Bradford One and Bradford Live both want to turn | :06:59. | :07:01.
There were celebrations in Scarborough today | :07:02. | :07:07.
as fundraisers from the Camping and Caravanning Club completed | :07:08. | :07:10.
They've cycled more than 400 miles, following much of the route | :07:11. | :07:14.
of the Tour de France in Yorkshire, and camping along the way | :07:15. | :07:17.
in order to raise money for alternative transport schemes. | :07:18. | :07:19.
They did it all in the tweeds and bloomers in vogue | :07:20. | :07:22.
when the Camping and Caravanning Club was created back in 1901 | :07:23. | :07:25.
and the BBC's Julia Bradbury joined them for their triumphant finish. | :07:26. | :07:38.
It is national campaign and caravanning week so these guys have | :07:39. | :07:47.
travelled hundreds of miles on these very uncomfortable bikes in order to | :07:48. | :07:52.
engage the public across the country. Really to just encourage | :07:53. | :07:55.
people to get involved in camping and caravanning. Was that a Penny | :07:56. | :07:59.
Farthing? A century on from the start of | :08:00. | :08:03.
World War One, we look back 29 people died and | :08:04. | :08:08.
the steel city was left shattered Next tonight, | :08:09. | :08:12.
around 200 miners at Kellingley and Thoresby collieries have been | :08:13. | :08:19.
sent redundancy notices today. UK Coal, which owns the pits, | :08:20. | :08:22.
is planning to close them within 18 Union leaders say it's | :08:23. | :08:25.
disappointing news as they're still It is business as usual today but | :08:26. | :08:43.
people arriving for work to date did not know if they were one of the | :08:44. | :08:47.
miners here to face compulsory redundancy. They should get the news | :08:48. | :08:52.
in a letter tomorrow. Weeks of uncertainty about the two pits have | :08:53. | :08:57.
been tough for the miners. They don't know if they have got a letter | :08:58. | :09:02.
coming through the letterbox in the morning to tell them not to come to | :09:03. | :09:06.
work on Monday morning. That is very difficult. It is just a few weeks | :09:07. | :09:11.
since UK coal said it would have two" Alinghi colliery with the loss | :09:12. | :09:20.
of hundreds of jobs. Miners voted 80% to except the deal, but it has | :09:21. | :09:36.
not yet been signed. Kellingley has had a few profitable weeks so the | :09:37. | :09:40.
unions say that issuing redundancy has not been sensible. We were | :09:41. | :09:45.
trying to safeguard future employment at Kellingley. We want an | :09:46. | :09:51.
employee buyout. The mining unions are still putting a case to the | :09:52. | :09:59.
Minister that it is an option, so everything is still up in the air | :10:00. | :10:03.
and for UK coal to dig themselves into a hole which says, no, we are | :10:04. | :10:07.
doing what we want to do is not right. If we do not do this deal, | :10:08. | :10:19.
the NUM proposal of looking at a members, you can kiss goodbye to | :10:20. | :10:21.
that because that will take six months to get that in place. If we | :10:22. | :10:25.
do not get beyond next week, we are all out of work, no redundancies. | :10:26. | :10:32.
Letters have also been sent to a workers at full speed pit and some | :10:33. | :10:35.
staff at UK coal's headquarters. Doncaster Council's support | :10:36. | :10:42.
for its schools is ineffective, according to a new report | :10:43. | :10:45.
from the education watchdog Ofsted. It says more than half | :10:46. | :10:47.
of the borough's children attend a school that's inadequate or | :10:48. | :10:50.
requires improvement. Tom Ingall is | :10:51. | :10:52.
in Doncaster with more. Normally when we are standing | :10:53. | :11:04.
outside the council offices in Doncaster Rovers it is the children | :11:05. | :11:08.
services which have taken a knock. Tonight, the theme is education. The | :11:09. | :11:15.
council have been told they are not doing enough for the children in the | :11:16. | :11:20.
town. If you are a parent with children in primary or secondary | :11:21. | :11:22.
school might you might want to look at these figures. Ofsted say: | :11:23. | :11:38.
it is those stats that made Ofsted come up here and look at what was | :11:39. | :11:42.
happening and they have criticised the council for three things `not | :11:43. | :11:48.
keeping their own performance data correctly, not keeping any record of | :11:49. | :11:54.
how governors were improving schools and for not using their powers of | :11:55. | :11:57.
intervention consistently. This is what they said this morning bull is | :11:58. | :12:05.
top what we found was the local authority was not aware of what the | :12:06. | :12:09.
issues were across it schools. They have not been able to deal with them | :12:10. | :12:15.
historically. It has got a bit better recently and they must get | :12:16. | :12:18.
credit for that but historically, they have not known where the issues | :12:19. | :12:22.
were in order to address them. We requested an issue from the council | :12:23. | :12:27.
but they declined, giving us a lengthy statement instead. They said | :12:28. | :12:30.
it has been a year since the mayor was elected and there have in | :12:31. | :12:35.
changes in policy since then. They understand what Ofsted are saying | :12:36. | :12:38.
that they are pointing to the work they have done in the last year, | :12:39. | :12:43.
establishing a school alliance where schools can help failing | :12:44. | :12:45.
institutions. Thank you very much. Now let's catch up with a campaigner | :12:46. | :12:51.
from Yorkshire who's travelling all 215 miles of the Trans`Pennine trail | :12:52. | :12:55.
in his wheelchair to try and improve Roy Taylor ` who works for the RSPB | :12:56. | :12:58.
` was diagnosed with motor neurone He's now making it | :12:59. | :13:03.
his mission to make the great Our reporter Sally Young joined him | :13:04. | :13:07.
on day six of his challenge. One year ago, Roy would have made | :13:08. | :13:23.
this journey by that but he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease | :13:24. | :13:25.
in September and his mobility has decreased rapidly. I feel alive one | :13:26. | :13:32.
I am outside. I am grumpy when I am indoors. We have found that the | :13:33. | :13:36.
paths which were accessible to me six months ago are no longer | :13:37. | :13:41.
accessible to me. You cannot get over the horse barriers or 3`piece | :13:42. | :13:48.
chicanes. Today, Roy has planned ahead and arranged for the council | :13:49. | :13:51.
to unlock the gate for him but it is not always that simple. The worst | :13:52. | :13:57.
bit was when we started in a gale and we got to an obstacle in the | :13:58. | :14:01.
peak district on the exposed Moores and we thought, there is no way | :14:02. | :14:05.
round this. We will have two back track in the rain. That is what I am | :14:06. | :14:09.
trying to change. That disappointing feeling when you realised you can't | :14:10. | :14:15.
get somewhere. This barrier is designed to stop motorbikes getting | :14:16. | :14:19.
onto the trail but it also stops wheelchairs and makes life difficult | :14:20. | :14:23.
for a whole other bunch of people. I am an amputee and I find this kind | :14:24. | :14:27.
of obstacle difficult. There might be a parent with a child in a | :14:28. | :14:33.
pushchair. By improving access for people in wheelchairs, it makes life | :14:34. | :14:40.
easier for everyone. Roy's 215 mile challenge has already raised over | :14:41. | :14:44.
?20,000, money that will help to remove some of the barriers on the | :14:45. | :14:49.
RSPB site where he works. He has been supported along the way by his | :14:50. | :14:54.
wife and a full top it is his independence. He has always just | :14:55. | :14:59.
gone and done things. That is what got him sofa and got him so many | :15:00. | :15:05.
friends and people that admire him. To cut his independence like that | :15:06. | :15:08.
from day to day just because he is in a wheelchair, that is really | :15:09. | :15:12.
unfair and that is why he is fighting for his freedom. If all | :15:13. | :15:18.
goes to plan, Roy will follow `` finishes challenge in Hornsea next | :15:19. | :15:25.
Tuesday. We had Roy in the studio a couple of | :15:26. | :15:30.
weeks ago. Such a determined character. Highlighting the problems | :15:31. | :15:43.
people have. Before seven p.m., we look at the | :15:44. | :15:52.
boxing. And we knew Louis Tomlinson was a big fan of Doncaster Rovers, | :15:53. | :15:56.
but could he be about to buy the site? | :15:57. | :16:05.
Next tonight, we return to our series marking the centenary of | :16:06. | :16:08.
The World War One At Home project is being carried out throughout | :16:09. | :16:13.
the BBC, working with Imperial War Museums. | :16:14. | :16:15.
We're looking at how the war affected people away | :16:16. | :16:17.
One of the most terrifying aspects was the threat posed by German | :16:18. | :16:22.
Zeppelins ` the huge gas filled airships used in bombing raids. | :16:23. | :16:24.
Sheffield was targeted in September 1916, | :16:25. | :16:26.
leaving 29 people dead and a trail of destruction throughout the city. | :16:27. | :16:29.
As the aeroplanes were overhead, everywhere was in darkness. It all | :16:30. | :16:50.
went dead. Vivid recollections from a Sheffield resident who look to | :16:51. | :16:57.
these guys one September night in 1916. Looming above the clouds a 500 | :16:58. | :17:02.
foot predator preparing to release its explosives. Piloted by German | :17:03. | :17:09.
Tim, Martin Dietrich, the Zeppelin dropped its bonds demolishing homes | :17:10. | :17:13.
and killing 29 people including ten children. Many of the innocent to | :17:14. | :17:18.
big Hemsworth families asleep in bed. At the beginning of the First | :17:19. | :17:26.
World War, the Zeppelin was the ultimate terror weapon. It could fly | :17:27. | :17:31.
further, faster and higher than anything else and people were | :17:32. | :17:37.
incredibly worried about it. Somebody said they had seen an | :17:38. | :17:42.
airship go over. I looked out the back window and I could see this | :17:43. | :17:46.
dark object going down towards rubber rim. Then there was acutely | :17:47. | :17:55.
booming noise. I was only young so I was frightened. Local woman Margaret | :17:56. | :18:00.
Smith which this to the horror, writing to her aunt Alan, I saw a | :18:01. | :18:07.
great red flare across the sky then a flash and another. They were high | :18:08. | :18:13.
explosive shells and they shook the Earth. They lit the whole sky up. | :18:14. | :18:21.
They were incendiary bombs. 36 crashed down, the first ironically | :18:22. | :18:27.
hitting a cemetery, the final resting place for most of its big | :18:28. | :18:33.
games. Searching amongst thousands of headstones, we found the grave of | :18:34. | :18:37.
Elizabeth Bellamy. It was reported the roof caved in as she was walking | :18:38. | :18:41.
across the bedroom to protect her child. The seventh bomb hit Kobe | :18:42. | :18:46.
Street and killed seven members of the same family. This is the grave | :18:47. | :18:56.
of a husband and wife and their five children. The youngest just two | :18:57. | :19:03.
years old. They were ordinary people from Sheffield. Quite often people | :19:04. | :19:08.
he had attempted to join up but it had been decided they were more | :19:09. | :19:13.
important at home. They stayed at home to do their bit and suddenly | :19:14. | :19:19.
the war came to them. In 1916, the great War descended on Sheffield in | :19:20. | :19:24.
the most terrifying and violent way. The Zeppelin returned safely to | :19:25. | :19:25.
Germany. You can hear more on that story | :19:26. | :19:32.
on BBC Radio Sheffield on Monday. All our local radio stations ` | :19:33. | :19:36.
Sheffield, Leeds and York ` will be broadcasting their own World | :19:37. | :19:39.
War One At Home stories from Monday And to see more World War One At | :19:40. | :19:43.
Home stories, go to the website. Now, sports fans will have one eye | :19:44. | :19:48.
on England's friendly against Peru tonight but an even bigger sporting | :19:49. | :19:57.
occasion will be taking place It's billed as the biggest night | :19:58. | :20:00.
of British boxing ever, with a crowd of 80,000 people expected | :20:01. | :20:05.
for the Groves ` Froch rematch. But also fighting for a world | :20:06. | :20:08.
title in front of the same crowd The IBF world champion, hailing from | :20:09. | :20:31.
Don cast, let hear it for Jamie MacDonald. Today's very public way | :20:32. | :20:39.
in is taking place at Wembley Arena. There are thousands here for | :20:40. | :20:44.
this pre`fight spectacle. Tomorrow night, there are two world title | :20:45. | :20:52.
fights, one featuring Don cast a's Jamie Murray Donald. My preparation | :20:53. | :21:01.
has been fantastic. I feel great. It is great to be a part of this. There | :21:02. | :21:07.
will be 80,000 people at Wembley. The last one I thought was in front | :21:08. | :21:12.
of 3000 people. It is unbelievable I am fighting in our national stadium. | :21:13. | :21:18.
Great to be a part of this. Preparation has gone fantastically. | :21:19. | :21:24.
I am ready to get in there. MacDonald will be one of a number of | :21:25. | :21:28.
fighters making history tomorrow night. He will enter the ring in | :21:29. | :21:32.
front of 80,000 fans at Wembley Stadium. His promoter is hoping for | :21:33. | :21:42.
a big performance tomorrow. It will be fantastic. I am so pleased he | :21:43. | :21:48.
gets the opportunity. A bad decision went against him last year and a | :21:49. | :21:54.
chance to become a two`time champion this year would be amazing. There | :21:55. | :21:57.
are more people here already than in some of our shows. A great moment | :21:58. | :22:03.
for British boxing. We will find out whether Yorkshire will be hailing | :22:04. | :22:06.
MacDonald as champion again. A 15`year`old girl from | :22:07. | :22:11.
West Yorkshire has been named in England's weightlifting team for | :22:12. | :22:13.
this summer's Commonwealth Games. Rebekah Tiler from Keighley is | :22:14. | :22:16.
already the youngest weightlifter to She says it's a great feeling to | :22:17. | :22:18.
represent her country and she can't believe she's living | :22:19. | :22:23.
her dream at only 15 years old. Meanwhile, Ali Jawad from Leeds ` | :22:24. | :22:26.
who was born without legs ` has made the team | :22:27. | :22:30.
in lightweight powerlifting. Doncaster Rovers has confirmed it's | :22:31. | :22:34.
in talks over a possible takeover. But get this, the new owner could be | :22:35. | :22:37.
One Direction's Louis Tomlinson. It's understood he's teaming up with | :22:38. | :22:41.
former Doncaster chairman John Ryan. Louis is a big Rovers fan | :22:42. | :22:44.
and he's even played for them but James Vincent is | :22:45. | :22:47.
our own Directioner. If you can't get a regular game, why | :22:48. | :23:06.
not just buy the club. You might recognise Doncaster Rovers number | :23:07. | :23:13.
28. He is a pretty big deal. He is their most famous fan and even on | :23:14. | :23:18.
their books as a player. Soon though, he could be in the | :23:19. | :23:21.
boardroom. You will know him better like this, in the world's biggest | :23:22. | :23:27.
boy band and we understand he wants TU some of the money he has earned | :23:28. | :23:31.
with them to try to get Doncaster Rovers promoted. Argue a one | :23:32. | :23:46.
Direction ban? No. Who is your favourite? Him from Doncaster. He | :23:47. | :23:55.
might be buying Doncaster Rovers. What do you think of that? I think | :23:56. | :24:05.
it is a good idea. He has got the cash and he must be keen, so why not | :24:06. | :24:14.
let him do it. I understand he has been a fan since they young kid and | :24:15. | :24:22.
he respects the club, so I can respect that. There was no mention | :24:23. | :24:33.
of Louis Tomlinson or boy bands in the statement. Jeremy Clarkson could | :24:34. | :24:41.
drive them to games, Lesley Garrett could give half`time entertainment | :24:42. | :24:49.
if you need help from other celebrities. It is estimated that he | :24:50. | :24:54.
earned ?10 million last year though, so he probably won't need financial | :24:55. | :25:00.
help. It is one thing buying the club, another thing to get them back | :25:01. | :25:05.
to the championship. Where will he find the time to sign | :25:06. | :25:13.
all those autographs. Phil is going to see one Direction tomorrow | :25:14. | :25:16.
night. I am not! I wanted him to end his | :25:17. | :25:28.
report with a one D. It has brightened up quite nicely. The best | :25:29. | :25:35.
of the sunshine today has been along the coast. Here are some | :25:36. | :25:37.
photographs: sunshine today, but we should all | :25:38. | :26:02.
see it whether `` we should all see good weather for the weekend. Going | :26:03. | :26:09.
down hill next week. It will not be wall`to`wall sunshine, but it is | :26:10. | :26:14.
settled as the high pressure will be dominating this weekend. When | :26:15. | :26:19.
low`pressure replaces that, it will be changeable again. The best of the | :26:20. | :26:26.
sunshine has been down the coastal strip. As we go down through this | :26:27. | :26:33.
evening, there is still quite a lot of clout. The cloud will remain | :26:34. | :26:39.
broken at times along the coast. That is where we are expecting the | :26:40. | :26:45.
lowest temperatures, but generally around ten or 11. The sun will rise | :26:46. | :26:52.
in the morning at 4:43 a.m., setting and 925 p.m. . Tomorrow, variable, | :26:53. | :26:58.
at times, large amounts of clout, but it will be varied. Not | :26:59. | :27:04.
completely dry. There could be the odd light shower, but you would be | :27:05. | :27:10.
unlucky to catch one. The breeze will be light and temperatures will | :27:11. | :27:17.
get up to where they should be for the time of the year, around 16 or | :27:18. | :27:22.
17 degrees, possibly even sneaking the odd 18 Celsius. On Sunday, a | :27:23. | :27:28.
better chance of catching a sunny spell. Dry on Sunday, variable | :27:29. | :27:32.
cloud. Hoping for better spells sunshine on Sunday with temperatures | :27:33. | :27:38.
up to 19 or 20. Make the most of it though because unsettled conditions | :27:39. | :27:43.
return on Monday and next week. So much for flaming June. | :27:44. | :27:45.
Mike, you don't need CAR HORN BLARES | :27:46. | :27:54.
Whoa! HE GASPS | :27:55. | :28:01.
Driving parents crazy. You have to tell the police | :28:02. | :28:08.
whatever it is that you know. | :28:09. | :28:24. |
