An online gambling expert from Yorkshire has supported calls for

It follows the jailing of a Sheffield man who stole thousands

of pounds from his employer after amassing debts of more than ?50 000.

Representatives of internet gambling companies have told Look North they

admit the rules could be improved. Here's Tom Ingall.

Figures for new accounts behng opened with gambling providdrs tell

In total, it is believed 16.5 million accounts open. It m`y

a significant number of people it means significant problems that have

these devastating impacts on their family, and, this link, on their

are a voluntary trading grotp for these companies. They told le the

social responsibility measures in place for online gambling are

extensive but they admit problem gambling is a complex area `nd

they'd never suggest improvdments couldn't be made. I know it was his

choice to do what he did. And he did obviously have some other issues.

And I think that more needs to be done to get the message out there

that gambling is actually a problem. It is not just a bit of fun. As to

realise he was losing a father to gambling until he lost him to

Plans to transform them werd first announced in 2001.

It was six years later when developer Hammerson cale

on board and named the ?400 million scheme, Sevenstone.

But delays and the economic downturn put the project on hold.

With no firm date for it to be built, the council parted company

But today, 13 years later, the council has revealed th`t

the development is now firmly back on the agenda.

These are some of the impressive plans and designs unveiled for the

retail quarter over the past few years. But the City Council has

struggled to get this key project off the ground. And this is what the

area looks like now. It is boarded up and awaiting demolition. The

white towel is the former Grosvenor hotel that has been derelict for

four years. The council said that it will take a loan to kick`st`rt the

scheme. The money will ensure that the orders are processed and a

militia can finally begin. We are trying to create a vibrant, dynamic

centre with not just shops `nd bars and restaurants but also thd office

developments and so on. And everything that comes with that To

allow us to compete on a level playing field with other big cities,

this scheme is critical to that I think it is probably the most

important project for the chty moving forward.

It's not clear yet how the council is going to get this money, but we

will find out more about thd finance at a council meeting next wdek.

A number of options are said to be on the table.

What we do know is that the council wants to get a developer
