Welcome to Look North. On the programme tonight...

:00:00.:00:00.

A warning not to travel without insurance from the family

:00:00.:00:00.

of woman who fell from a fifth`floor window in Spain.

:00:07.:00:10.

Her family now faces huge costs to bring her home to Sheffidld.

:00:11.:00:14.

70 years ago, the devastating Holmfirth Flood, now, new phctures

:00:15.:00:29.

of that day and the clear up going on display for the first tile.

:00:30.:00:34.

Recognition at last for Leeds cyclist Beryl Burton.

:00:35.:00:35.

She dominated the sport for 25 years but never knew fame or forttne.

:00:36.:00:40.

She was an amateur, she has two work on a farm near Harrogate to finance

:00:41.:00:45.

her sport. What a lovely summer's day ht has

:00:46.:00:52.

been right across the region, but how long will the sunshine last

:00:53.:00:55.

Join me for the very latest. A 24`year old woman from Shdffield

:00:56.:01:04.

is seriously ill in a Spanish hospital after sleepwalking out

:01:05.:01:07.

of a fifth floor hotel window. Amy Wigfull was on a family holiday

:01:08.:01:09.

to Benalmadena on the Costa del Sol when the accident happened,

:01:10.:01:13.

leaving her with multiple fractures She wasn't insured and now her

:01:14.:01:16.

family could face large bills to Our Health Correspondent Jalie

:01:17.:01:21.

Coulson reports. Amy remains in intensive care after

:01:22.:01:38.

a family holiday to Spain wdnt terribly wrong. In the earlx hours

:01:39.:01:42.

of Sunday morning, she was sleepwalking and she fell ott of a

:01:43.:01:46.

fifth floor window and fell onto the street. The bleed on her br`in

:01:47.:01:52.

remained stable, which is good news. She is still not breathing properly

:01:53.:01:57.

on her own. Most of the famhly had to return home when the celdbrations

:01:58.:02:01.

for her 40th birthday party were cut short, but now they get daily

:02:02.:02:07.

updates from Amy's mother in Spain. She is so strong and brave. She has

:02:08.:02:13.

broke her hips, her pelvis, her back, her shoulders. Lots and lots

:02:14.:02:17.

of different things have bedn broken, but we cannot believe she is

:02:18.:02:23.

still alive, to be honest. The severity of this fall when we looked

:02:24.:02:26.

at where she had felt from `nd where she fell to, we cannot belidve she

:02:27.:02:33.

made it. She did not have any travel insurance, so it means the family

:02:34.:02:37.

could face large bills for her care and to get home. They hope to recoup

:02:38.:02:41.

some medical expenses from the British government. What happened in

:02:42.:02:48.

this case is highly unusual, but instances of British holidax`makers

:02:49.:02:51.

travelling abroad without adequate insurance and then running hnto

:02:52.:02:56.

trouble are all too common. It is of particular concern at this time of

:02:57.:03:01.

the year when people are gohng on their holidays. According to the

:03:02.:03:03.

Association of British Travdl Agents, 24% of holiday`makers go

:03:04.:03:06.

abroad without insurance, btt that figure rises dramatically for 1 to

:03:07.:03:11.

24`year`olds with almost half having no cover. Figures also show that in

:03:12.:03:19.

2011 and 2012, more than 3500 holiday`makers were hospitalised,

:03:20.:03:25.

but over 70 per week. The l`st one thing, I do not need insurance, it

:03:26.:03:30.

is just a weekend. But she thought everything would be OK, and it

:03:31.:03:35.

turned out to be a living hdll. Her family are now trying to rahse money

:03:36.:03:38.

on a Facebook page to cover some of the costs, and when she's ott of

:03:39.:03:48.

intensive care, they can turn their thoughts to getting her homd.

:03:49.:03:55.

So how common is it for people to travel abroad without

:03:56.:03:58.

Sean Tipton is from the Association of British Travel Agents.

:03:59.:04:01.

About one in five people evdry year, go abroad without travel insurance.

:04:02.:04:04.

And that figure increases substantially

:04:05.:04:05.

And the main reason those pdople travel without travel insur`nce is

:04:06.:04:09.

they tell us it is because @, they don't think they will need it.

:04:10.:04:13.

Or C, they think if there is a problem, the Foreign Office will

:04:14.:04:17.

All of those things couldn't be more wrong.

:04:18.:04:21.

She was going away for the weekend, she didn't think she would need

:04:22.:04:24.

the insurance, she is now in a critical condition, wh`t kind

:04:25.:04:26.

It just goes to show, even if you go for a couple of days,

:04:27.:04:31.

In terms of expenses, if you are in intensive card,

:04:32.:04:36.

you're talking about thousands of pounds on a daily basis.

:04:37.:04:39.

If you need to be flown homd by air ambulance, from Europe,

:04:40.:04:43.

In other parts of the world, 15,000 to ?20,000, all of

:04:44.:04:49.

What kind of coverage does the EHIC card give you?

:04:50.:04:59.

This European health insurance card has replaced the E111.

:05:00.:05:03.

It gives you health care around the European Union, but bear

:05:04.:05:07.

Do not assume that if it is on a holiday in Bulgaria that xou will

:05:08.:05:14.

get the same service as you would in the NHS, because you would not.

:05:15.:05:17.

In other countries you have to pay towards some

:05:18.:05:21.

of your medical expenses, even if you go to a state hospital.

:05:22.:05:25.

And lastly, and this is the case in Greece, some of the hosphtals

:05:26.:05:28.

It is not their job as they see it, to change the bed or feed you,

:05:29.:05:34.

that is regarded as the job of the family.

:05:35.:05:36.

There are some limitations to state medical care, which is why

:05:37.:05:39.

if you have insurance, you do not have to worry about it becatse you

:05:40.:05:42.

How important is it to have full cover?

:05:43.:05:50.

I dealt with a case for a young lad who hired a moped in Thailand,

:05:51.:05:59.

had an accident, was in a coma, his mother had to sell her house to

:06:00.:06:02.

There are concerns tonight `bout the future of Kellingley Colliery Lee.

:06:03.:06:24.

There is a major setback with one investor pulling out. Our btsiness

:06:25.:06:31.

correspondent is that Kelling A what has happened? We have been

:06:32.:06:34.

waiting for news that the ddal had been done, that's ?20 million to

:06:35.:06:39.

enable the phased shutdown over 18 months here at the colliery would go

:06:40.:06:44.

ahead. Instead, we heard th`t Hargreaves had pulled out of this

:06:45.:06:50.

deal. Hargreaves is a mining company and it won't malt be in South

:06:51.:06:54.

Yorkshire, but instead, it said that it would not plough the 5 mhllion

:06:55.:07:00.

shares. This is a significant bit of news, because Hargreaves was the

:07:01.:07:03.

company that had brokered the deal with the government in the first

:07:04.:07:10.

place. Today, it said in a statement that it was throwing, it was pulling

:07:11.:07:14.

out, simply because it had not been possible to secure a plan that they

:07:15.:07:19.

could support. Sounds very confusing. Does the future of this

:07:20.:07:26.

pit coming to scrutiny? Well, from what I understand, this news is not

:07:27.:07:31.

the blow that it would have been two months ago. We heard many thmes that

:07:32.:07:36.

if the deal wasn't done, th`t was it, the doors would shut, btt we now

:07:37.:07:41.

expect that other funding c`n still be put in place and UK Coal has said

:07:42.:07:46.

that they were bristling alternatives. The bottom line is,

:07:47.:07:49.

this place has been producing quite a lot of coal of late and there is

:07:50.:07:57.

money in the bank. Unions today said it was a blow, but it wasn't the

:07:58.:08:04.

death blow that it might have been. It is disappointing that Hargreaves

:08:05.:08:07.

decided to pull out of this plant and its leaves us with a shortfall

:08:08.:08:12.

of ?5 million. But it is not devastating news. The company is in

:08:13.:08:17.

a better position than it w`s three months ago. We have now overcome the

:08:18.:08:22.

gap at Kelling and production is well above expected and the pit is

:08:23.:08:27.

making money. He now wants the government to come back to the table

:08:28.:08:33.

to look at a possible funding state aid package to keep this pit going

:08:34.:08:38.

for the future, not just for the next 18 months, and talks are still

:08:39.:08:47.

ongoing about a possible employee buyout here.

:08:48.:08:52.

Bradford Council says there's no need for any formal investigations

:08:53.:08:54.

into claims of an Islamic agenda at some of the city's schools.

:08:55.:08:57.

Concerns that governors werd pursuing an Islamic ethos

:08:58.:08:59.

in Bradford's education system were first raised following the

:09:00.:09:01.

so called 'Trojan Horse' controversy at Park View School in Birmhngham.

:09:02.:09:04.

In April, Bradford Council sacked the entire governing body

:09:05.:09:06.

Yesterday fresh concerns ovdr governors pushing an Islamic agenda

:09:07.:09:09.

were raised at the mainly Muslim Carlton Bolling Colldge.

:09:10.:09:16.

I don't believe that there `re any issues relating to this so`called

:09:17.:09:19.

The police have looked at it, Bradford Council have looked at it.

:09:20.:09:29.

We do have issues in certain schools about governance that we de`lt with

:09:30.:09:32.

We're there to make sure we deliver the best possible education

:09:33.:09:37.

for all the young people in our district and give support to

:09:38.:09:40.

the teachers so that they c`n do the best possible job they can.

:09:41.:09:43.

A 27`year`old prisoner has gone on the run from Hatfield Jahl

:09:44.:09:46.

near Doncaster. Richard Brown was serving

:09:47.:09:47.

a sentence for aggravated btrglary. He absconded last night.

:09:48.:09:50.

He has contacts in the Scunthorpe area and police believe he lay

:09:51.:09:53.

Police are advising people not to approach him.

:09:54.:10:00.

The mother of a teenager from Leeds who took her own life, is w`rning

:10:01.:10:04.

about the pressure social mddia can have on vulnerable people.

:10:05.:10:06.

Kate Cleal's daughter Lily died just before Christmas last xear

:10:07.:10:09.

In her first television intdrview, Kate says she wants parents to be

:10:10.:10:12.

aware of the negative effects of the online world.

:10:13.:10:15.

Greg Dawson of BBC Radio One Newsbeat reports.

:10:16.:10:21.

Lily was just 18 when she took her own life.

:10:22.:10:24.

Her mother was left with melories of a daughter she describes

:10:25.:10:28.

Even on a shopping trip the night before she died.

:10:29.:10:32.

She really wanted one of those onesies with the e`rs

:10:33.:10:34.

We went into one of the big shops and they only had child sizds.

:10:35.:10:39.

So I said, just try it on anyway, let's see how it looks.

:10:40.:10:45.

And she was just grinning and standing there.

:10:46.:10:48.

We both knew that she looked ridiculous and we took a picture

:10:49.:10:51.

And that was a picture that I kept showing the people.

:10:52.:10:55.

The next day, Lily had dialled 999 and warned emergency services

:10:56.:11:01.

A recent break`up with her boyfriend had upset her, but Lily's mother

:11:02.:11:09.

thinks the influence of social media made things worse.

:11:10.:11:13.

It can be a great source of delight when you're looking at picttres

:11:14.:11:16.

of yourself, posting selfies, looking at Vine, but if you're

:11:17.:11:20.

feeling down or vulnerable, it can be an endless source of torlent

:11:21.:11:25.

One charity set up for dealing with teen suicide

:11:26.:11:28.

receives hundreds of calls dach week with many young people raishng

:11:29.:11:30.

They talk about being bullidd, losing friends, being unfridnded,

:11:31.:11:39.

That for you me not may not be a problem, but for a young,

:11:40.:11:47.

vulnerable person at risk of suicide already, that is a major problem.

:11:48.:11:52.

Lily's mother thinks that for those in need, some kind of human contact

:11:53.:11:55.

We need to stress the value of talking to people face`to`face.

:11:56.:12:01.

Just put your phone down, and if what you read brings you down,

:12:02.:12:05.

While she doesn't entirely blame social media,

:12:06.:12:11.

Kate hopes that other peopld can learn from what happened to Lily.

:12:12.:12:21.

They were the big winners in the recent European elections and today

:12:22.:12:29.

Yorkshire's three new UKIP LEPs took their seats for the first thme.

:12:30.:12:32.

But despite being in the job for less than three weeks, one of

:12:33.:12:35.

UKIP's Euro MPs, Jane Collins, says she's planning to stand in Rotherham

:12:36.:12:38.

Our political correspondent Tim Iredale reports from Brtssels.

:12:39.:12:45.

For more than 40 years, the union flag has slowed in the heart of the

:12:46.:12:53.

Brussels city, but for how luch longer? The UKIP MEPs say that they

:12:54.:12:59.

are committed to ensuring that Britain leaves the European Union at

:13:00.:13:03.

the earliest opportunity. Wd're the party that wants to be out of it, we

:13:04.:13:09.

want to be made redundant, the sooner the better. May question why

:13:10.:13:15.

a party like this would turn up in Brussels at all? And take the

:13:16.:13:19.

generous salary and expenses package that the European Parliament has two

:13:20.:13:23.

offer. This is a big career change for this man, he was born in

:13:24.:13:27.

Pakistan and came to Bradford at the age of eight not speaking a word of

:13:28.:13:32.

English. He spent most of hhs working life in business. M`ny might

:13:33.:13:37.

wonder why as the son of an immigrant to represent a party that

:13:38.:13:43.

has such a hard line against immigration? As a party, we're not

:13:44.:13:46.

against immigration, we're saying the right type of immigration that

:13:47.:13:51.

does good for the immigrant coming in and also the country. Thdy have

:13:52.:13:53.

the skills that we need to better the country and the society. UKIP to

:13:54.:13:59.

build on their recent success in next's general election. Despite

:14:00.:14:03.

being an MEP for less than three weeks, Jane Collins said shd plans

:14:04.:14:08.

to stand in the Rotherham constituency where UKIP won almost

:14:09.:14:13.

half of the council seats up for grabs in the local elections. I will

:14:14.:14:17.

put myself forward for that hustings, and if the branch votes me

:14:18.:14:21.

in or gives me the position has candidate, I will take that, and I'm

:14:22.:14:26.

keen to run a strong campaign in Rotherham. So, unlike most jobs for

:14:27.:14:34.

people hope for a long caredr, these newly elected MEPs are alre`dy

:14:35.:14:37.

They're the country's first mixed ability rugby team

:14:38.:14:42.

And recognition at last for Leeds cycling legend Beryl Burton,

:14:43.:14:45.

World Champion of the 1960s and now the inspiration

:14:46.:14:48.

It's 70 years since the Hollfirth flood killed three people and now

:14:49.:15:05.

evocative photographs of th`t day in May 1944 are going on display.

:15:06.:15:08.

They were all taken by a local photographer who rushed

:15:09.:15:10.

out in the rain to capture the flood and the clear`up.

:15:11.:15:13.

But many of the pictures were never printed and this is the first

:15:14.:15:16.

A small town deluged, a community devastated.

:15:17.:15:25.

The 1944 Holmfirth flood came without warning.

:15:26.:15:29.

A cloud burst sent a torrent of water rushing down

:15:30.:15:33.

Harry Bray was a local photographer who gr`bbed his

:15:34.:15:39.

70 years later, every image is going on display, printed for the first

:15:40.:15:45.

My main feelings were looking at the people in the picturds.

:15:46.:15:54.

I found it quite emotional, really, because I realised that these were

:15:55.:16:00.

the people that my grandfather associated whth.

:16:01.:16:04.

They were the people around him the people that lived there at the time.

:16:05.:16:08.

And just to see their faces and see what they were going through.

:16:09.:16:14.

I was surprised that I did find it very emotional.

:16:15.:16:18.

The flood came in wartime, leaving Holmfirth looking

:16:19.:16:23.

Three people lost their livds and more could have died had

:16:24.:16:28.

the rain not fallen on a bank holiday Monday when thankfully,

:16:29.:16:32.

Richard Kemp was aged three and remembers nothing

:16:33.:16:37.

before or after, but recalls the moment the rising water washed

:16:38.:16:41.

Suddenly there was a surge and a huge amount of water came

:16:42.:16:47.

through and the thing I remdmber particularly was this car floating,

:16:48.:16:52.

And as a three`year`old, I knew the river should be

:16:53.:16:58.

Back in 1944, this was the darkroom where Harry

:16:59.:17:03.

developed his pictures, all of them taken a on these incredible,

:17:04.:17:07.

In the middle of the war, they were really hard to get hold

:17:08.:17:13.

of, but he took 60 pictures and they provided us with

:17:14.:17:15.

Unfortunately, he passed aw`y in 1950 which was long before ly time.

:17:16.:17:24.

But somehow, having printed all of these pictures up,

:17:25.:17:29.

I do feel as if I know him ` little bit better than I did beford.

:17:30.:17:35.

The photos of the flood and the community clear up go

:17:36.:17:38.

on display as part of the Holmfirth Festival from Friday evening.

:17:39.:17:51.

Super League ` we have some breaking news on Bradford Btlls

:17:52.:17:58.

The Bulls' appeal against their six point deduction has been rejected.

:17:59.:18:00.

Earlier this year, you'll rdmember, Bradford had six points takdn

:18:01.:18:03.

off their tally, as a punishment for going into administration.

:18:04.:18:05.

But the independent tribunal has ruled

:18:06.:18:07.

So the Bulls remain in the bottom two relegation places,

:18:08.:18:12.

Cricket and Yorkshire's rain`affected County Championship

:18:13.:18:19.

match against Nottinghamshire at Headingley has ended

:18:20.:18:22.

Notts declared their second innings this afternoon on 335 for 8.

:18:23.:18:27.

They were obviously hoping to force a victory by skittling Yorkshire

:18:28.:18:33.

But Yorkshire held firm ` jtst about ` losing just three whckets.

:18:34.:18:38.

Next tonight, the Bradford Bumbles are the first mixed ability rugby

:18:39.:18:41.

They have a squad of forty plus players,

:18:42.:18:44.

some with learning difficulties and others with physical disabilities.

:18:45.:18:46.

They regularly play against able`bodied teams and have

:18:47.:18:48.

Some of the players are even training to become coaches.

:18:49.:18:53.

We met two of the players and their head coach, and we started by asking

:18:54.:18:57.

the founder of the club Anthony Brooke, who has cerebral palsy, why

:18:58.:19:00.

But you get injured all the time, tell us about your injuries.

:19:01.:19:19.

I fractured my hand, I have done my achilles,

:19:20.:19:25.

This is the biggest award, what does it mean to you?

:19:26.:19:37.

Are you surprised at how popular your team has becomd?

:19:38.:19:42.

I am not, because I'm told you're quite good, Leon.

:19:43.:19:45.

You're going to be a scrum`half at your size?

:19:46.:19:49.

What would you say to this guy next to you to get him to play bdtter?

:19:50.:20:07.

A lot of talking, a lot of supporting people.

:20:08.:20:11.

Tell me about the kind of teams who play against?

:20:12.:20:18.

We have established quite good local teams, going down to Wales now,

:20:19.:20:25.

which is another mixed abilhty team, that is in the fourth year

:20:26.:20:29.

of doing it, so it is becomhng a regular fixture.

:20:30.:20:32.

There is a Scottish team th`t has been set up recently.

:20:33.:20:35.

It is called the Tri`union, the tri`union's cup this ye`r.

:20:36.:20:39.

That must be pretty good, because they are playing able`bodied

:20:40.:20:44.

That is sometimes quite funny, because we call

:20:45.:20:48.

the people able bodies facilitators, and some of them are rubbish!

:20:49.:20:53.

Yes, they work quite closelx with the WEA, because they are now,

:20:54.:21:02.

because it is getting quite popular and the more attention we gdt,

:21:03.:21:06.

At first, everyone was a bit, oh, stand`offish, but now the more that

:21:07.:21:15.

you meet the lads, Anthony says he has got injuries, but that hs

:21:16.:21:18.

They have started rolling it out to other clubs, but the front line

:21:19.:21:26.

as it should be, working with these lads, these are the first
