Good evening and welcome to Friday's Look North. The Government company

set up to plan and deliver the Tour de France says Yorkshire is

officially well on track to stage the race ` one of the biggest free

sports events ever held in Britain. The TDF Hub, as the company is

known, has released its third and final readiness report. And a survey

shows a whopping ninety four per cent know the Tour's coming. And 84%

of us think it's worth getthng excited about. But not everxone s

convinced it's worth the disruption. 60% think it'll be worth it, that

leaves 40% who don't. Well, the Grand Depart begins in just three

weeks time, and our Tour correspondent Matt Slater h`s been

looking at how ready Yorkshhre is for the big race.

Walking around it is hard to believe there are people who do not know

about the race. These children now. We want to make them aware of it but

also try forward other areas of the curriculum. Get them confusdd about

it. They have taken it on board We are ready for the tour. It hs a race

on bikes. It is not like racing cars. It is very different. There

have not been many things in Yorkshire before. This is rdally

popular and has never been here It is a big thing.

Would it be good to have soleone from Yorkshire competing? Yds.

Someone from Doncaster would be even better.

The children have designed ` souvenir for visitors. This is my

personal favourite, famous Yorkshireman. But there are a lot

more challenges. These ladids have been busy. They have just found out

that their road will be closed earlier than scheduled, throwing

their events into doubt. We will have to tell all 70 people that they

need to be here by five a.m.. I don't think they will want to, which

means refunds. We will not lake any money from the upkeep of thd village

hall, which is the whole purpose of the event. A total disaster.

But nobody can say they did not see it coming. " he is not surprised. ``

Ed Clancy. It is impressive. Everybody is getting really behind

it. Genuinely excited. Very few people I have contacted are not

looking forward to it. That is the impression you get.

of the TDF Hub, which is pl`nning the logistics behind the Totr. He

joins us now. We have been planning this for 2

months. We have employed our Chief Executive only in August last year.

We need to build a massive organisation. You can see the

statistics and know how manx miles of road we need to close. Wd are

authorities. It is a massivd authorities. It is a massivd

logistical exercise. You need to divert funds to pay for

extra policing. When our tile in Germany got there we attracted lots

of people, this time it will be 60,000. How will you cope whth that?

There are a number of things that arise. We have made massive savings

against the original budget and certain aspects of the organisation.

Inevitably the money ebbs and flows. We are inside the original budget we

were allocated. The fact is we must spend money on guaranteeing safety.

You say it will not be police, and will be stewards. Are they properly

trained? Of course. We have 10,000 volunteers

backed up by the police and emergency services. We need to

guarantee the communications through the difficult ter rain.

We can see all over the county that Ponting is going up. `` bunting But

some hotels are rather worrhed that there will not be the surge of

people anticipated. Similar in Sheffield. Why are people not

booking hotels? The vast majority of people who are

coming to the major points, the start and finish, will be coming

from within one hour's journey. We start a campaign next week which

will run for two weeks, a r`dio campaign, outside the immedhate

territory, encouraging people to come and book hotels. It is not a

universal picture that hotels are not booked. Most of the guesthouses

in North Yorkshire are bookdd out. I know of hotels outside of Ldeds and

Sheffield that are already fully booked. The fact is that most people

coming will travel on the d`y. In that report we saw a dis`ppointed

community member. The road closure has been brought forward by two

hours and they are worried nobody will turn up.

An event of this magnitude changes to take place. `` do. You c`nnot

stage an event of this scald, the biggest ever in Yorkshire, without

there being some disruption. All of our research says that most people

recognise and accept that. joins us now.

Next tonight; tributes have been paid to a six year old girl who was

killed by a car as she walkdd to school. Lily Davies was hit as she

crossed a road in Wibsey in Bradford. Police have appealed for

witnesses. Lily's family have described her as a bright and

beautiful girl who was generous and kind to everyone. Olivia Richwald

reports. She was going to see her gr`ndad

when she was hit by a car. Doctors were unable to save her lifd.

Friends and family visited the scene to leave flowers. A beautiftl little

girl doing very well in school. Always bouncing around, likd to do

stuff. She will never be forgotten. Just a beautiful little girl, so

full of life. She enjoyed doing everything, she loved coming to see

us. All the people have brotght flowers. I would just like to say

thank you. She was hurt on this road, the

family say it appears to be a tragic accident. The driver of the Land

Rover involved did stop and is helping police with the ongoing

investigation. The incident happened at 8:30 a.m., a busy time of day.

Police want to hear from anx other witnesses. Lily was a pupil at

stocks Lane primary School. The teachers laid flowers. The school

issued a statement saying that staff and pupils were upset and s`ddened.

All of their thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Hillsborough disaster in 1989 has that a heard police inspector in

South Yorkshire raised concerns about access at the

stadium three years before ` fatal crush at the ground. 96 Livdrpool

fans were killed. But despite the concerns, the police force went on

to give the stadium a 'clean bill of health'. Our Correspondent John

Cundy sent us this report from Warrington, where the inquests are

A senior police officer frol West Yorkshire has been sacked for gross

misconduct after admitting failing to provide a drink`driving breath

specimen. Detective Chief Superintendent David Knopwood failed

a roadside breath test when stopped by police in North Yorkshird in

April; he then refused to ghve another when taken to a polhce

station. Knopwood was banned from driving for twelve months and fined

?1000 at a hearing last month. Police investigating the violent

robbery of an 80`year`old m`n in Leeds have released CCTV footage in

an attempt to find the people responsible. Eamonn Durcan was

attackedand then dragged inside his own house in Lea Farm Drive in

Hawksworth. He was threatendd with a knife ` and robbed of cash,

photographs and jewelry. I seen people my age in the paper,

black and blue, bruised all over. I thought, that couldn't happdn to me.

I am not bothered about the television and the cameras `re they

took. I would sooner have the photographs and the jewellery.

Yorkshire ambulance workers are being balloted for more strhke

action. The union said their members are being forced to work longer

shifts and claimed is only ` matter of time before somebody is seriously

injured or killed as a result of staff exhaustion. The annual service

say that strike action is not in the best interest patient. A van

exploded in traffic and Leeds this afternoon. One man was taken to

hospital and several roads were closed. The first explosion was

followed by several violent blasts. The van was owned by a Leeds `based

demolition company and carrxing gas canisters. Hence the severity of the

explosions. The driver was dxtremely lucky to escape without serhous

injury. He was taken to hospital with superficial burns. Bec`use of

the risk of further explosions roads were closed. It brought sevdral

intersections to a standstill. The explosion happened about two and a

half hours ago. As you can see there's still a lot of disrtption.

Roads are still closed even now Contributing to the Friday `fternoon

traffic. For many commuters, it will take a long time to get homd. I have

been stuck on 57 minutes. Wd will have to go all the way around and

back on into town. We left `t 3pm and it is now 3:50 p.m.. Typical

Friday afternoon in Leeds. @s police and fire crews cleared the scene the

cause remained unclear, and investigation is underway. Coming

teenager Freddy Woodward. I have been the main athlete in thdse

events and somebody has been placed with me. It's just so happens that

this is my third. Freddie is at the stage where he is ready to tp his

game. They have put me with him we have got a good lift togethdr. I

grew up in Sheffield my whole life. The whole time I have been diving

Nick has been here. We have known each other for years now. It is nice

to finally be able to partndr him. They have competed in a couple

crawled Preece, last week they won the national championships to secure

their place at the Commonwe`lth Games. Very excited. This is my big

aim to make the Commonwealth Games. It worked out great to be able to do

this with Nick, it has propdlled me into the big senior events. I really

is lying? I am 27, he is 18, I have to look after him, make surd he

brushes his teeth in the morning, and so on!

I have got a tad too on my chest but they keep it hidden.

people were still a little bit, it is common to Yorkshire? But now

having gone out on the road, cyclist, the kids, people are

definitely getting into it. And you have got a good way for people to
