so it's goodbye from me, and on BBC One we | :00:00. | :00:00.
Good evening and welcome to Monday's Look North. | :00:00. | :00:00.
Paying the price of developing Leeds. | :00:00. | :00:00.
Our investigation finds trade has fallen 40% at the city's market | :00:07. | :00:10.
since building work started on a new shopping centre. | :00:11. | :00:21.
It is very, very bleak. I won't be able to continue after Christmas in | :00:22. | :00:25.
trade level stay like this. We'll also hear from one le`ding | :00:26. | :00:30.
councillor who tells Look North Relatives pay tribute to | :00:31. | :00:34.
the traders "kind and peace`loving" And the disabled teenager from York | :00:35. | :00:40.

York. But all of the details coming up shortly. | :00:56. | :01:03.
Good evening and welcome to Look North. | :01:04. | :01:09.
Trade at Leeds Market has f`llen by 40% in just two months with nine out | :01:10. | :01:12.
of ten traders saying it is because of the closure of the car p`rk to | :01:13. | :01:15.
make way for the new Victorha Gate development. That's the finding of | :01:16. | :01:18.
an exclusive BBC survey which spoke to 160 stall holders. | :01:19. | :01:26.
Mid day and this man is waiting for customers. He waits dot`macro and | :01:27. | :01:38.
waits. He has been in Leeds market for decades and has seen thd ups and | :01:39. | :01:45.
downs. Until a few months b`ck when trade dropped off a cliff. Trade at | :01:46. | :01:49.
the moment is rock bottom. Last Saturday we were 50% down across the | :01:50. | :01:56.
board. Friday about 40%, mid week, 20%. On average about 20% across the | :01:57. | :02:02.
board. Where once there werd healthy profits, now huge losses. ?2500 in | :02:03. | :02:11.
just one week. It is a storx told across Leeds market. A BBC survey | :02:12. | :02:15.
asked every stall if there had been a significant change in the past two | :02:16. | :02:22.
months. Out of 160 responses, 1 3 said yes. The average drop, 39% down | :02:23. | :02:29.
in just two months. The cause? 0% gave just one answer. The c`r park. | :02:30. | :02:36.
The closing of the market c`r pass. The car park. It is the car park. | :02:37. | :02:44.
The car park closed and trade halved overnight. The car park closed down | :02:45. | :02:48.
and the business started to go down and down. We are offering an online | :02:49. | :02:55.
service, home delivery. We want to keep the customers happy but nobody | :02:56. | :02:59.
wants to walk half a mile whth six carrier bags full of meat. The car | :03:00. | :03:05.
park closed because of the new multi`million pound Victori` gate | :03:06. | :03:08.
development. It will bring John Lewis and more trade sits on the | :03:09. | :03:14.
former market car park and ht won't be ready for two more years. Nobody | :03:15. | :03:19.
from the council would come on camera to do an interview btt they | :03:20. | :03:21.
sent a statement saying thex are working with the developer to make | :03:22. | :03:25.
parking available for the m`rket and promote other places to park and | :03:26. | :03:30.
alternative ways of getting here. They said they are working with | :03:31. | :03:34.
traders with a range of prolotions, offers and events. ?2 for your | :03:35. | :03:42.
strawberries. Many traders say they have seen little sign of th`t help | :03:43. | :03:48.
and this man fears for his future. Very, very bleak. I will not be able | :03:49. | :03:53.
to continue after Christmas if trade stays like this and I know ` lot of | :03:54. | :03:58.
other traders will be the s`me. Either they will have to drop the | :03:59. | :04:02.
wrens, helpers with the ratds or expect a house of cards scenario | :04:03. | :04:09.
were so many shops will shut down. With a ?30 million refurbishment, | :04:10. | :04:11.
the next few years should bd a new dawn for Leeds market will stop the | :04:12. | :04:16.
question is, how many old traders will be here to see it? | :04:17. | :04:20.
Well, we did ask to speak to someone from the ruling Labour partx | :04:21. | :04:24.
Stewart Golton is the leader of the Liberal Democrats on | :04:25. | :04:27.
I think Look North did the city of Leeds a good service. | :04:28. | :04:34.
They highlighted the plight some of our traders feel like they `re in. | :04:35. | :04:37.
Having a new development, Vhctoria Gate with a new John Lewis hs a | :04:38. | :04:42.
It is meant to be the goose that lays the golden egg. | :04:43. | :04:47.
We don't want to make sure the market ends up eight de`d duck | :04:48. | :04:50.
So we need to make sure that our traders are able to trade whilst | :04:51. | :04:56.
The problems seems to be th`t the council are saying this is | :04:57. | :05:00.
It isn't because this is gohng to take a couple of years to btild | :05:01. | :05:06.
Is that two years of torment for the traders, who might not even | :05:07. | :05:10.
Our job as a council was to make sure that isn't to years | :05:11. | :05:15.
I understand the council ard looking at seeing whether they can get | :05:16. | :05:20.
reduced parking fees in negotiation with some private operators. | :05:21. | :05:22.
That needs to happen sooner rather than later. | :05:23. | :05:26.
It is a very well loved institution, the market and we need to m`ke sure | :05:27. | :05:33.
The second thing is making sure we promote the market as much | :05:34. | :05:38.
Especially those that work within the centre of Leeds, that they | :05:39. | :05:43.
Just using it once a week and spending ?5, | :05:44. | :05:48.
maybe just buying your lunch there would make a huge differencd to | :05:49. | :05:51.
I know you are singing the songs on behalf of the traders re`lly | :05:52. | :05:56.
but shouldn't the ruling Labour group on the council realisdd this | :05:57. | :06:00.
was going to happen before the Victoria Gate development started? | :06:01. | :06:03.
It was obvious part parking closing down would cause problems? | :06:04. | :06:06.
They were given assurances there were alternatives in place. | :06:07. | :06:09.
Your investigation has obviously highlighted that is not the case. | :06:10. | :06:13.
I don't think it is a party political issue, | :06:14. | :06:18.
it is a working partnership with the council, all the party groupings | :06:19. | :06:23.
and the traders to get this stabilised as soon as possible. | :06:24. | :06:25.
And in the long`term will mhllions on this new retail sector? | :06:26. | :06:30.
Hopefully the new retail operation at the | :06:31. | :06:34.
shopping centre will bring hn even more people to this end of town | :06:35. | :06:36.
But when they come down to this end of town | :06:37. | :06:39.
and are attracted by John Ldwis they need to have some traddrs | :06:40. | :06:43.
offering them something to bite at the market and obviously we need | :06:44. | :06:46.
to make sure they stay in btsiness throughout this sensitive pdriod. | :06:47. | :06:50.
If you would like to get in touch with those on this or any other | :06:51. | :07:03.
story, we are on Facebook. Next tonight, | :07:04. | :07:12.
the cousins of a student murdered in Sheffield have paid tribtte to | :07:13. | :07:31.
their relative, describing him Anowar Tagabo was killed on | :07:32. | :07:34.
a night out after a family wedding. His family now want | :07:35. | :07:40.
his killer brought to justice. Anowar Tagabo came to Britahn to | :07:41. | :07:55.
dedicate his life to peace. He had witnessed shocking bloodshed and | :07:56. | :07:57.
cruelty in Sudan and fled the violence to study for a degree in | :07:58. | :08:02.
these studies at Bradford University. It is a terribld irony | :08:03. | :08:06.
that our night out in Sheffheld should end in his murder. E been at | :08:07. | :08:12.
a family wedding on May the 25th when he encountered a large crowd | :08:13. | :08:14.
outside the Viper rooms nightclub will stop he was attacked and fell | :08:15. | :08:19.
and died nine days later. Hhs cousins are devastated, describing | :08:20. | :08:26.
him as kind and peace`loving. They cannot believe he survived the war | :08:27. | :08:29.
zone to end up dying in what they still regard as one of the safest | :08:30. | :08:33.
countries in the world. It hs tragic. This experience is `wful | :08:34. | :08:41.
when your cousin dies in a circumstance. The family cannot | :08:42. | :08:53.
express our sorrow. The reaction of his mother in the refugee c`mp was | :08:54. | :09:01.
tremendous. It was very sad. This is very tragic for the family. Those | :09:02. | :09:09.
people who are responsible for the crime we need to be caught. The | :09:10. | :09:21.
police investigation is continuing. One man was arrested over the | :09:22. | :09:25.
weekend and released on bail. The Saturn in a second man was `rrested | :09:26. | :09:27.
and is being questioned by police. Miners unions have been in London to | :09:28. | :09:31.
ask for the government's help to keep a North Yorkshire coal mine | :09:32. | :09:34.
open beyond next Autumn. They've been meeting the | :09:35. | :09:37.
Energy Minister to ask for around ?70 million to keep | :09:38. | :09:40.
Kellingley colliery going. It's currently planned to close | :09:41. | :09:42.
in 2015 with the loss of 700 jobs. Our business correspondent, | :09:43. | :09:45.
Danni Hewson, is at Westminster So Danni, do the unions | :09:46. | :09:47.
like what they've heard? What they have been told if they can | :09:48. | :10:03.
come up with a plan that represents value for money for the UK taxpayer, | :10:04. | :10:06.
then the government will look at it. I must stress state aid, although it | :10:07. | :10:14.
is signed off by Europe it does come out of UK taxpayers money. So the | :10:15. | :10:20.
government have a fine line to walk between saving jobs and not wasting | :10:21. | :10:26.
cash. I am joined by the NUL and Nigel Adams, the MP for the area. | :10:27. | :10:31.
Chris, value for money, can this represent value for money? We can | :10:32. | :10:36.
demonstrate it is value for money for the taxpayer to keep 1300 men | :10:37. | :10:40.
and people in the supply industries in work, as up poster giving them a | :10:41. | :10:48.
ten thousand download to put them out of work. You have been trying to | :10:49. | :10:56.
attract private investor. You would think a private investor wotld have | :10:57. | :11:07.
been found by now? You would have thought so, but with mining their is | :11:08. | :11:15.
lots of uncertainties and hhgh capital expenditure at the start. | :11:16. | :11:17.
You have to wait until it is developed to produce the cold. There | :11:18. | :11:25.
is uncertainty the moment as to where the electricity will be | :11:26. | :11:28.
generated from and the environmental issues. Nigel, we know this has been | :11:29. | :11:32.
done elsewhere, Germany and Spain. Why wouldn't the UK do it? The | :11:33. | :11:36.
government can only look at what has been the government for help. They | :11:37. | :11:45.
have offered cash to do that, ? 0 million and that is still on the | :11:46. | :11:53.
table despite one of the parties walking away last week. But that | :11:54. | :11:55.
money is still there. I would like to see this plan. We all want to CB | :11:56. | :11:57.
's minds stay open, we need this coal and these are highly skilled | :11:58. | :11:59.
jobs in our region which we must keep. The government can only deal | :12:00. | :12:05.
with what is put to them for hope. The money is still on the t`ble If | :12:06. | :12:09.
this plan comes forward, I `m pleased the Minister has sahd they | :12:10. | :12:13.
will look at it. But it does have two represent value for mondy by the | :12:14. | :12:21.
taxpayer. The mountain needdd could be up to around ?80 million. Unions | :12:22. | :12:29.
will go away, talks with thd company over the next couple of days and | :12:30. | :12:32.
come up to the plan and then it is back to the drawing board. | :12:33. | :12:36.
In other news, the former partner of a wom`n from | :12:37. | :12:40.
Leeds who died after being `ttacked by two pit bull dogs has pldaded | :12:41. | :12:43.
guilty to owning a banned animal under the Dangerous Dogs Act. | :12:44. | :12:45.

It's been announced that thd Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and | :13:31. | :13:37.

William, Kate and Harry will be in Yorkshire | :13:41. | :13:43.

Meet the Yorkshire teenager getting ready to represent Team GB `t the | :17:21. | :17:24.
It's a bad time to be a Bradford Bulls supporter. | :17:25. | :17:39.
avoiding relegation from thd Super League were dealt another blow at | :17:40. | :17:41.
the Super League were dealt another blow at the weekend when thdy were | :17:42. | :17:44.
Frist has done a sterling job, but it was down to recent results. Every | :17:45. | :18:12.
game that goes by and every loss we gather in, the window of opportunity | :18:13. | :18:17.
becomes smaller. We just fedl may be bringing in some new blood `nd | :18:18. | :18:20.
moving in another direction will reinvigorate a team. Time whll tell. | :18:21. | :18:27.
A teenage climber from York has been selected to represent Great Britain | :18:28. | :18:43.
Decent fightback by Yorkshire. A reasonable day. The Test match | :18:44. | :18:49.
starts at Headingley on Friday and a good forecasts will get a lot of | :18:50. | :18:53.
people down there. A teenage climber from York has been | :18:54. | :19:00.
selected to represent Great Britain in this year's Para`climbing World | :19:01. | :19:05.
Championships. 17`year`old Sharna Gallagher manages to fit | :19:06. | :19:06.
five`days`a week of training And what makes her achievemdnts | :19:07. | :19:08.
even more impressive is that Every beginner climate is t`ught the | :19:09. | :19:25.
three points of contact ruld. Keep three limbs in contact with the wall | :19:26. | :19:30.
at all times. But she breaks the rules every time she climbs. When I | :19:31. | :19:36.
first started people were trying to help me climb. I just kind of | :19:37. | :19:41.
moulded into my own way of climbing. I had to find for myself. | :19:42. | :19:47.
It was hard for able`bodied people to teach me how to climb. It is | :19:48. | :19:57.
amazing to watch the speed `nd skill with which she climbs this wall She | :19:58. | :20:03.
is now in the top two in thd country and last week found out she had been | :20:04. | :20:14.
select good for Team GB. Shd is very special. She is exceptionally | :20:15. | :20:16.
determined. She never knows when to give up. She can train and just keep | :20:17. | :20:22.
training. She does fatigue, but mentally she can keep wishing | :20:23. | :20:33.
herself. It is great to watch and a pleasure to coach her. She hopes her | :20:34. | :20:41.
success will inspire a new generation of disabled climbers to | :20:42. | :20:42.
take up the sport. It is always hard for able`bodied people to coach kids | :20:43. | :20:46.
with a disability. So if thdy can be taught by somebody with a dhsability | :20:47. | :20:48.
it can be a massive motivator for them. Let them know they can achieve | :20:49. | :20:55.
anything. They might not want to stick a climbing, but it cotld open | :20:56. | :20:59.
their eyes to a lot more thhngs I do believe everyone can clilb. She | :21:00. | :21:06.
will represent great Britain in the World Championships in Septdmber. | :21:07. | :21:12.
It was the store that put B`rnsley on the fashion map. | :21:13. | :21:17.
Pollyanna opened its doors in the 1960s. | :21:18. | :21:18.
It was owned by Yorkshire style guru Rita Britton. | :21:19. | :21:22.
Over Easter Rita suffered a stroke and now after almost 50 years in | :21:23. | :21:25.
business she's made the difficult decision to close the shop. | :21:26. | :21:29.
London, Paris, Milan and Barnsley. It is not about fashion, it is about | :21:30. | :21:55.
style. That is what Rita Brhtton has been telling her customers. She | :21:56. | :21:59.
brought designer to Barnslex when she opened a Pollyanna in the | :22:00. | :22:03.
1960s. It became an institution here, but now the iconic store has | :22:04. | :22:21.
closed it doors. I to do it as a new era. I had a wonderful mess`ge on my | :22:22. | :22:30.
phone last night from a deshgner who said, you have got to bring in a new | :22:31. | :22:35.
era. But obviously, it is ndarly 50 years and has been a massivd part of | :22:36. | :22:39.
my life. In November I becale 7 and I always maintained age is not the | :22:40. | :22:46.
problem. The deciding factor was a few weeks ago when I had a stroke. | :22:47. | :22:55.
That was the deciding factor. You might not think of Barnsley as a | :22:56. | :22:57.
fashion centre but for more than 45 years people came to Pollyanna to | :22:58. | :22:59.
get these unique designer pheces they struggle to get anywhere else. | :23:00. | :23:03.
It is so sad. It is an insthtution we are losing. It was the one place | :23:04. | :23:11.
to get a designer label. It is hard to imagine what Barnsley is going to | :23:12. | :23:14.
be like with out it because it has played such an important part. It | :23:15. | :23:21.
wasn't just the close, the cafe made the store part of the community The | :23:22. | :23:26.
success of Pollyanna over the decades put Barnsley on the fashion | :23:27. | :23:32.
map. Pollyanna is Rita's baby. Pollyanna without Rita would not be | :23:33. | :23:40.
Pollyanna any more. It I nedd fashion and developed fashion in the | :23:41. | :23:43.
north of the UK. People in the fashion scene in London will be sad | :23:44. | :23:49.
to hear this news just as wd are. It may be the end for Pollyann`, but | :23:50. | :23:55.
the woman who became a fashhon Guru insists her work in the cre`tive | :23:56. | :23:56.
arts will go on. Yes, | :23:57. | :24:15.
I've been to Mytholmroyd Ac`demy in Calderdale which was a school | :24:16. | :24:16.
that came out to cheer us on during But we were going | :24:17. | :24:20.
so fast we missed them! So I went back | :24:21. | :24:23.
in this morning to meet somd of the students at the start of | :24:24. | :24:27.
their Tour de France themed week. And the tour will go right past | :24:28. | :24:32.
the school on Sunday 6th of July. At the end of it, they had ` | :24:33. | :24:47.
wheelchair competition as wdll. Different competitions throtghout | :24:48. | :24:52.
the week. I would love to know what you were saying. | :24:53. | :24:54.
Lovely pictures from the last 2 hours. Look at Bradford on Saturday | :24:55. | :25:13.
afternoon. Beautiful part of the world I don't often show, | :25:14. | :25:18.
Wensleydale. That was taken this afternoon. The West has been the | :25:19. | :25:23.
best place for the sunshine today. If you have some nice pictures to | :25:24. | :25:28.
send in send them to these addresses. There has been a lot of | :25:29. | :25:34.
cloud in Leeds today. It has broken very nicely. Much each of North | :25:35. | :25:40.
Yorkshire having a lovely evening with a fair amount of sunshhne. | :25:41. | :25:45.
Temperatures hovering around 17 Celsius. Tomorrow is another day of | :25:46. | :25:52.
variable cloud with some sunshine. High pressure is in charge but the | :25:53. | :25:55.
cloud is going all the way round the top and back down the eastern side. | :25:56. | :26:00.
That could bring patchy rain tomorrow evening and tomorrow night. | :26:01. | :26:05.
Much of the week does look right. The cloud going round the | :26:06. | :26:08.
high`pressure is coming back down to eastern parts of North Yorkshire. | :26:09. | :26:14.
Overnight, we will see the cloud pushing back in from the North Sea. | :26:15. | :26:18.
With the exception of Pennine areas which may stay clear. Cloud further | :26:19. | :26:24.
east. Could be thick enough for the odd spot of drizzle. Otherwhse it is | :26:25. | :26:31.
generally drive. The sun will rise in the morning at 4:35 a.m.. | :26:32. | :26:39.
Generally dry day tomorrow with sometimes large amount of cloud but | :26:40. | :26:44.
like today, it will break up from time to time and when the stnshine | :26:45. | :26:50.
does come out it will feel pleasant. Late tomorrow afternoon and evening, | :26:51. | :26:55.
one or two showers breaking out ahead of the week weather fronts | :26:56. | :26:57.
bringing dampness southwards tomorrow. Top temperatures now: | :26:58. | :27:12.
Patchy rain to come on Tuesday night. That means Wednesday is off | :27:13. | :27:21.
to a damp start. A risk of one or two sunny intervals raking out. On | :27:22. | :27:26.
Friday at Headingley it does look dry, as does next weekend. That is | :27:27. | :27:33.
the forecast. No 8pm summarx tonight because of the foot ball but we are | :27:34. | :27:41.
back at 10:25pm with the news. Enjoy the sunshine and the rest of your | :27:42. | :27:42.
evening. Goodbye. We are about to find out whether | :27:43. | :28:25.
they can cook. You're going to love it. | :28:26. | :28:31.
Smashed it. Yum-yum-yum. They are nervous. Ken's just | :28:32. | :28:38.
frying some lettuce. | :28:39. | :28:42. |
