The chief executive of the Leeds Teaching Hospitals has apologised | :00:11. | :00:14.
for the sexual crimes committed by Jimmy Savile during his 40`year | :00:15. | :00:17.
association with the Leeds General Infirmary and St James's Hospital. | :00:18. | :00:20.
An independent inquiry publhshed today has revealed the scald | :00:21. | :00:22.
of the abuse at 28 hospitals and the ease with which Savhle | :00:23. | :00:27.
The latest figures show there were 60 victims at the Leeds Gendral | :00:28. | :00:33.
But the youngest was just fhve, the oldest 75. | :00:34. | :00:40.
The incidents ranged from inappropriate behaviour to sexual | :00:41. | :00:42.
The most recent incident took place in 2009 when Savile was 82 ` | :00:43. | :00:49.
Our health correspondent Jamie Coulson reports. | :00:50. | :00:56.
In life, Jimmy Savile was a flamboyant | :00:57. | :00:57.
In death he is remembered as a predatory paedophile | :00:58. | :01:03.
Today, the full extent of his crimes at hospitals | :01:04. | :01:08.
But it was here at the Leeds General infirmary in his home city that | :01:09. | :01:14.
the sheer scale of that abuse was at its worst. | :01:15. | :01:20.
It was quite normal to see him around the wards and departlents | :01:21. | :01:23.
This unrestricted access gave Jimmy Savile ample opportunhty to | :01:24. | :01:27.
indulge in abusive and inappropriate contact with patients and staff | :01:28. | :01:35.
The staff treat patients in wards that haven't changdd | :01:36. | :01:37.
Jimmy Savile began his association with the Leeds General Infirmary | :01:38. | :01:43.
in the 1960s, working on hospital radio and then later as | :01:44. | :01:45.
But over five decades he abtsed men, women, boys and girls, the xoungest | :01:46. | :01:52.
Jane was just 16 when she was taken into the hospital | :01:53. | :02:01.
I felt like I was the chosen one, absolutely the chosen one | :02:02. | :02:07.
and even to the point where I was taken down to the room, | :02:08. | :02:11.
And it is only after it has all happened that you | :02:12. | :02:18.
just feel dirty, you feel ridiculously stupid, becausd I did | :02:19. | :02:21.
Jimmy Savile often spoke proudly of his involvement with hospitals. | :02:22. | :02:29.
In hindsight his comments now appear chilling. | :02:30. | :02:34.
For me, hospital contains everything I would like at this moment in time. | :02:35. | :02:37.
It contains a lot of people, a 24 hour scene, | :02:38. | :02:41.
you go to bed because you w`nt to, not because you have to. | :02:42. | :02:45.
The people are invariably in bed so they cannot get up and get `t you. | :02:46. | :02:51.
Jimmy Savile had unrestrictdd access to the Leeds General Infirm`ry. | :02:52. | :02:55.
He had three offices and spent a great deal of thme | :02:56. | :02:57.
in the old A department, but could go almost anywherd, | :02:58. | :03:00.
abusing many of his victims in wards, corridors and offhces | :03:01. | :03:04.
He even boasted of interferhng with the dead bodies in the morttary | :03:05. | :03:10.
When you are abused by a celebrity, they were intimidated into being | :03:11. | :03:14.
quiet, they were frightened and said they were not going to be bdlieved | :03:15. | :03:17.
and the whole celebrity status of this individual is very, very | :03:18. | :03:20.
Jimmy Savile's crimes ranged from inappropriate touching to r`pe. | :03:21. | :03:28.
Brenda Ball has counselled a number of his victims. | :03:29. | :03:31.
They were vulnerable in the first place. | :03:32. | :03:33.
They do not know what their life would have been like without that, | :03:34. | :03:40.
but they do know that that has changed their life and their | :03:41. | :03:43.
They have to learn to cope with that. | :03:44. | :03:48.
For many of Jimmy Savile's victims, his legacy of abuse lives on | :03:49. | :03:52.
after suffering harm in a place where they should have been safe. | :03:53. | :03:54.
And, what is the NHS trust had to say? They described the findings | :03:55. | :04:09.
today at shocking and said they had sympathy for the victims and admit | :04:10. | :04:14.
that there should have been more scrutiny over what Jimmy Savile was | :04:15. | :04:17.
doing and said the trust. The trust has put in place 31 recommendations | :04:18. | :04:23.
and wail the last recorded hncident of Jimmy Savile was in 2009, they | :04:24. | :04:28.
say the hospital today is a different place. This is thd | :04:29. | :04:29.
executive, Julian Hartley. I need to say how sorry we `re that | :04:30. | :04:39.
those patients, staff and mdmbers of the public experienced stch abuse | :04:40. | :04:42.
at the hands of Jimmy Savild An apology there, but we do we go | :04:43. | :04:56.
from here? For hospitals will have to produce reports on Jimmy | :04:57. | :05:00.
Savile's activities. The BBC and the Department for Education will bring | :05:01. | :05:04.
out reports later this year. Today's report concludes th`t going | :05:05. | :05:08.
forward we must all be more courageous and challenging behaviour | :05:09. | :05:12.
that is unacceptable and th`t pretending not to see cannot be an | :05:13. | :05:16.
option. Thank you for that, Jamie Coulson. | :05:17. | :05:19.

which can organise next year's event at no cost to the council. | :06:00. | :06:04.
